SM Energy and Highland Elementary School

D

uring this past school year, SM Energy and its employees have been honored to support Highland Elementary. In 2015, SM Energy employees contributed to purchase school supplies and classroom iPads, and the company matched these donations. Additionally, SM Energy employees give their time in the classrooms offering math, science, reading, and spelling assistance to students. For the past two years, the company has contributed with monetary donations to Project Lead the Way through the Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools. “One of our core values at SM Energy is supporting the communities where we live, work, and operate,” said SM Energy Sr. Geologist, Mark Millard. “We have formed a strategic partnership with Highland Elementary that includes not only monetary aid, but more importantly, volunteering our time at the school. Helping out at the school not only allows our employees a chance to ‘give back,’ it also helps them connect with the Billings community.” An SM Energy employee was pleasantly surprised when they came across a second grade student at the local YMCA who instantly recognized him and introduced him to his father as “the SM Energy scientist who gave us iPads and helped me with reading.” In addition to supporting Highland Elementary, SM Energy employees volunteer on a regular basis for STEM Billings, a community wide initiative that focuses on inspiring and empowering our youth to seize opportunities and to tackle the toughest challenges of their generation. During this school year, 600 students have benefited from SM Energy’s participation in the STEM Billings leadership team. generations of scientists in Billings: “The Millard values the impact of SM Energy’s greatest joy that we get out of our partnersupport at Highland Elementary for future ship with Highland Elementary is that it

ampgrounds of America is grateful for the support the Billings community has given them for the past 50 years. Because of this support, they believe it is important to give back to the community. The Partners in Education program is a great fit for that mission. KOA was present at the beginning of the Partners in Education program and designed the original logo. Since 2004, KOA has been a proud partner with Ponderosa Elementary providing volunteer and financial support throughout the years.

4

On a weekly basis, KOA employees volunteer in kindergarten and first grade classrooms working one-on-one or with small groups reinforcing reading and math skills. They also assist the teachers with classroom projects and lessons. These volunteers take great pride and pleasure in watching these students progress throughout the year. Additionally, KOA sponsors several events at Ponderosa! When carnival times roll around, KOA is present front and center. From the bright yellow booth at Sat-

urday Live to carnival night at the school, KOA provides games, prizes and volunteers to make Ponderosa carnivals a huge success. Another highlight in 2015 was the Hundreds Day Celebration which emphasized the importance of school attendance by celebrating the first 100 days. Every student received a recognition certificate and letter of congratulations from KOA CFOO, Toby O’Rourke. KOA touches the lives of all students at Ponderosa Elementary through their donations of time and resources. “Should

the need for assistance arise throughout the year, Ponderosa knows they can always call on KOA for consideration. It is important for the students at Ponderosa to know that there are members of their community outside of their school and immediate family who care about their education and wellbeing,” Yvonne Ray, Accounting Department Manager. Ponderosa principal, Clay Herron, sums up his appreciation for KOA, “They go above and beyond for our students, families, staff and community. We are fortunate to have such a great partner.”

anderson Stewart is a proud new partner who is making a difference with the students and staff at Meadowlark Elementary. During this inaugural year, the Sanderson Stewart staff of CSTP (Cool, Smart, Talented, People) shared their creativity and professional skills while seeing the potential of the school through the children’s eyes. Recently, four of the CSTP met with 2nd through 5th grade students in the robotics club to help them develop a concept for their dream playground. Through this collaboration, students shared design ideas, learned about solar energy and multiple modality items, and developed a concept for the playground that Meadowlark staff and parents are currently raising funds for. Fourth grade teacher, Amy Leffler shared, “The time Sanderson Stewart employees spend with our kids is valuable, important, and so appreciated! We can’t wait for our

next meeting.” In addition, Sanderson Stewart engineers are pairing with classroom teachers and their students with the Project Lead the Way initiative. The core purpose of Sanderson Stewart is to Plan and Design Enduring Communities to make the world a better place—and that begins with youth. “Sanderson Stewart is very excited for this opportunity to support Meadowlark Elementary and the work that our public educators do. It is important to our CSTP and to the community. We can’t think of a better way to improve our world than to participate in the growth of our future leaders and community builders,” shared Haley Grubb, Sanderson Stewart Accounting/Administrative Specialist. Meadowlark Elementary is excited to partner with Sanderson Stewart and looks forward to their continued support both in the classroom and on the playground!

Project Lead The Way Provides Activity-, Project-, and Problem-Based Learning

E

ngaging students at a young age builds confidence, grows interest, and puts them on course for strong accomplishments in middle school, high school, and beyond. Billings Public Schools, the Education Foundation and community leaders are taking a bold step to immerse our students in a rigorous Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) curriculum. We are committed to boosting student engagement and innovative thinking while developing problem-solving, creativity, and community skills. Project Lead The Way does this by offering a superior curriculum based on best practices in STEM education. Currently, 13 of our 22 elementary schools have implemented the Project Lead The Way curriculum, Launch. Students and teachers find this curriculum engaging, challenging, and fun! During the 2016-17 school year, seven additional elementary schools will implement the Launch curriculum. This school year Riverside and Will James Middle Schools are piloting the Design & Modeling course of the Gateway to Technology middle school curriculum. In the 2016-17 school year, Will James, Castle Rock, and Medicine Crow Middle Schools will be expanding Project Lead The Way courses for students. “Our employees are amazed by the level to which educators and students have taken STEM education in such a short time,” shared Shea Dawson, Manager Finance & Public Affairs, Phillips 66. “We are on the right path to prepare our students for jobs in our community.” We hear from teachers who tell us of engaged students, improved behavior, fewer absences on Project Lead The Way days, and increased cooperation among students. They see students recognize that each problem has more than one way to solve it. As students work in teams, they learn to really explore why something is or is not working. This takes patience, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, perseverance, and creativity. Teachers, principals, and parents see

Learning Continued from 9 students developing these skills. This program levels the playing field for our children where an academically struggling student can encourage a gifted student and where coming to school is so interesting that a young student can’t wait to get to school. “I am amazed by what is happening in our community’s classrooms and the level of engagement by students and their excitement for learning,” shared Dr. Bob Wilmouth, Rocky Mountain College. “Project Lead The Way curriculum allows our children to ignite their curiosity, think creatively, and learn to collaborate in order to solve problems.” Our Partners in Education have made a tremendous impact in supporting Project Lead the Way in our schools through volunteerism, advocacy, and financial support. Project Lead the Way volunteers can be seen helping assemble robots, engineering beanstalks, and leading students in discussions about careers. Our Project Lead the Way supporters provide additional resourc-

10

es to our schools by serving as mentors and liaisons to real-world applications of what students are learning in class. “It is a rare and truly humbling philanthropic opportunity that arises – when values, passions, personal relationships align so perfectly. Our educational philosophy embraces STEM and active, collaborative learning and Project Lead the Way means these ideals will directly benefit a school and students that so many of us know personally and cares so much about,” shared Jim Beal, Principal, CTA Architects Engineers. A big thank you to Phillips 66, Verizon Foundation, 360 Office Solutions, First Student, Treacy Foundation, ExxonMobil, St. Vincent Healthcare, SM Energy, Dr. Enrico and Martha Arguelles, Charles Bair Foundation, CTA Architects Engineers, Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools, Todd Fisher and Monica Mainland, Cloud Peak Energy, Stillwater Mining Company, Jim and Kelly Coleman, 9th District Dental Society, Wells Fargo Foundation, Knife River Yellowstone Division, Terry and Kristy Bouck, KLJ Inc., EBMS, Dr. John and Chris Dorr, Russ and Susan Plath, Garth and Jill Quade, and Anvil Corporation.

PLATINUM STUDENTS

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Christina Aragon

CHUCK ARAGON

Parents: Chuck and Kathy Aragon Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Highland Elementary Future Plans: I will be attending Stanford University in the fall. I plan to run both cross-country and track there. I hope to study human biology with a Pre-med focus. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: My junior year AP US History class was very challenging. It was extremely fast paced because we went through a chapter each week. The class required students to do a lot of reading, studying, and learning outside of class, so I had to figure out how I learn

best on my own. It took a lot of work and time, but it taught me to push myself. Motivation for Platinum Program: I wanted to challenge myself and prepare myself well for college. I know that by taking the hardest classes offered at my school, I would be able to gain a lot more knowledge and learn how to work hard, manage my time, and face new challenges. Magnum Opus: My Magnum Opus was creating a kids summer running program. I worked with the Rim Runners to create the Yellowstone RimRunners’ Kids Run the Nation summer running program. It allowed kids ages kindergarten through sixth grade to participate in running activities and tag

games twice a week throughout the summer. Teacher: Mr. Jensen was my 8th grade U.S. History teacher at Lewis and Clark. He was the first teacher who really taught me that learning could be fun. History has always been a subject that I have struggled with and not enjoyed as much. Mr. Jensen taught me that you can find ways to enjoy learning, even in the subjects you don’t necessarily excel at. Extracurricular Activities: Track and Field, Cross-Country, Senior Advocates, National Honor Society, Stem Society (11th grade), Symphonic Band.

Also, skiing. Lots of skiing. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Culinary Essentials. It gave me the chance to collaborate on projects with kids I had never met before. If I am unable to work with strangers on future projects, the crash and burn strategy will likely take over. It was a great experience to have had the opportunity to work on this skill. Teacher: Lisa Wood. She has created a beautiful relationship with a student with

disabilities at Senior High during the 3 years he has been attending. Her ability to form that kind of relationship in such a short amount of time is amazing. She has shown me what it means to truly care for others without boundaries. It’s something we often forget to do. Extracurricular Activities: Varsity Soccer, Magic City Soccer, Senior Advocates, Interact Club

the results of those difficult tests. A lot of students dropped the class, but I’m really glad I stuck with it because it taught me how to work hard. Motivation for Platinum Program: As a freshman, I knew I wanted to take the most rigorous courses available at my high school so I thought the Platinum Program would be a good fit for me. I also wanted to prepare myself for college and thought it would be a great accomplishment to have on my college applications. Magnum Opus: My Magnum Opus was a business plan for a tapas restaurant called

Nosh. It addressed all of the many different aspects of opening a restaurant. It involved something I am passionate about, so I had a lot of fun doing it even though it was difficult. Teacher: My Honors Algebra III teacher, Ms. Amy Pfeifle, made a positive impact on me because she helped me understand upper level math, which I struggle with. She was very supportive and a great teacher. Extracurricular Activities: Varsity Golf, Varsity Tennis, Skiing, National Honor Society, The First Tee of Montana, Youth Leadership Billings, Senior Advocates

Wesley Currence Parents: Robert and Diana Currence Middle School: Trinity Lutheran/Homeschool Elementary School: Trinity Lutheran/ Homeschool Future Plans: I am off to MSU Bozeman to study finance and entrepreneurship. I like to view it as the either make it big or crash and burn strategy. Regardless, I am quite excited to start the next year at the university and have the chance to live in Bozeman. TONY SMITH

Emma Dyre

JANA GRAHAM PHOTOGRAPHY

Parents: Jon and Mary Dyre Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Broadwater Elementary Future Plans: After high school I am attending the University of San Diego and will double major in Sociology and Business. After that I plan on attending law school and pursuing a career in the FBI or as a federal prosecutor. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The most challenging and rewarding class I took in high school was AP US History. We were tested over a full chapter every week and our grade was almost entirely based on

PLATINUM STUDENTS

Lillian Dyre Parents: Jon and Mary Dyre Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Broadwater Elementary Future Plans: I plan to attend college and major in Chemistry. After that I am considering going into medicine or medical research. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Calculus is the most rewarding class I have taken in high school. It really helped me understand why I have been taking math all these years as well as the practical applications of math.

Motivation for Platinum Program: I participated in the Platinum Program because I wanted to have the most challenging high school experience possible. I also was excited to learn more about something I was passionate about by completing my Magnum Opus. Magnum Opus: For my Magnum Opus I focused on the importance of diversity in education. I interviewed students who attend Senior High and then created a website to illustrate how diverse Senior High is and how everyone’s backgrounds influence their current perspectives.

Teacher: My fifth and sixth grade teacher Mrs. Cline had the greatest impact on me. She taught me to be curious and love learning. Because of her, I felt like I could do anything if I was willing to put in the effort. She also taught me that it was important to not only work hard, but also to be kind and help others. Extracurricular Activities: Cross Country, Tennis, Skiing, Band, Orchestra, Student Council, Interact Club, National Honor Society, Senior Advocates, STEM Club, Billings Clinic Volunteering

was a test), so it was stressful trying to keep a consistent grade. Motivation for Platinum Program: I knew that I was going to take all honor and AP classes in high school anyway, so I decided to participate in the Platinum Program. Additionally, I enjoyed the thought of an individual project and wanted to challenge myself. Magnum Opus: The topic of my Magnum Opus is music based; I taught myself how to play the guitar. I already knew how to play two other instruments, but learning a new

one was challenging, especially with only books and videos at my disposal. Teacher: The teacher who has made the greatest positive impact on my education so far has been my physics teacher, Mr. Umemoto, because he teaches the material in a way that engages students and really shows how the content is applicable to real world situations. Extracurricular Activities: National Honor Society, Senior Advocates, Philharmonic Orchestra, STEM Society

class that has been the most rewarding for me is AP Calculus. Being in that class has challenged me, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and helped me to find new ways to learn. I have been able to learn and discover concepts on my own and also have the opportunity to work a lot with my classmates and build good relationships with them. Teacher: The teacher who has made the greatest impact on me is Mrs. Nation. She has been my Spanish teacher for the majority of my high school career and has also been my

mentor for senior advocates. She has believed in me from the start and is the person that encouraged me to take AP Spanish. She inspires me every day to push myself and still have fun. Extracurricular Activities: ZOE Bible Church youth group and children’s ministry volunteer, Live Youth Group worship team (drummer), Senior Advocates, National Honors society, Billings Senior High Track and Field, Billings Senior High Soccer

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Maren Kirkland Parents: Brenda and Joe Kirkland Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Highland Elementary and Boulder Elementary Future Plans: I plan to study engineering.

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The most rewarding class was English with Mrs. Barnes. Although English is not my favorite subject, Mrs. Barnes was a great teacher and helped me appreciate literature. Teacher: Mr. Qualls, from Lewis and Clark,

was a very energetic teacher and coach. He brought real world learning into the class and always knew how to make us laugh. Extracurricular Activities: Tennis, Soccer, Cross Country, 4-H, and Equestrian

because Mr. Beals helped me see that science could be fun and demanding at the same time. On the other hand, Mrs. Cordes, in AP English, took a subject that I loved and challenged me to think on a deeper level to become a better writer. Teacher: I would like to thank every teacher I have had over the years, but my first grade teacher, Mrs. Kerra Olson, was the teacher who made me love to learn. She is such a positive inspiration and taught me to believe in any

dreams that I have. She continues to support me in everything that I do, and continues to motivate me with her endless energy. for me because I had to learn to study and complete assignments within a small window of time while still retaining the knowledge I was learning. Part of the challenge was learning how to write strong essays within a class period. Motivation for Platinum Program: I had already decided going into my freshman year that I was going to take all of the Honors and Advanced Placement courses because I want to be challenged when it comes to learning, and the Platinum Program created a bit more of a challenge that I wanted to take on and complete.

Magnum Opus: 75 Years of Bronc Track at Billings Senior High with a focus on how the program is more of a family than a team. Teacher: I do not think there has been one specific teacher who has made the greatest positive impact on my K-12 education. Each teacher that I have encountered has help me in his or her own way to help me reach my goals. SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Aubrie Steiner Parents: Chantelle and Nathan Steiner Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Rose Park Elementary Future Plans: I graduated high school a semester early and am currently enrolled at Salt Lake Community College. I plan to continue my education and volleyball career there in the fall. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: My

most challenging and rewarding class was AP English. Mrs. Kate Cordes taught us how to execute several different forms of writing. I have been able to see the importance and effectiveness of the techniques I learned in AP English in my college Intro to Writing class this semester. Although challenging, it prepared me well for the next step. Teacher: The life skills that I learned from Senior High Volleyball extend far beyond

the game. Jeff Carroll encouraged discipline, leadership, trust, and confidence, traits that will benefit me throughout my life. He is not only a great teacher/coach, but a great friend who celebrates my successes and also helps me find the positives in negative realities. Extracurricular Activities: Volleyball, Senior Advocates, National Honor Society, and Church Youth Group.

English 4 has been one of my most challenging and rewarding classes because Mrs. Cordes has held our writing to a high standard yet taught us how to reach it. Teacher: Ms. Williams was my elementary Extended Studies teacher and Ms. Rector was my middle school MathCounts teacher. They both taught me how to think outside of the

box, problem solve, and enjoy learning. In high school, Mr. Caekaert made both calculus and golf fun and rewarding. Extracurricular Activities: American Legion Baseball, Varsity Golf, Silver Run Ski Team, Senior Advocates, National Honors Society, Band

The material is difficult, but Mr. Michels is such a great teacher that the difficulties were only temporary. Teacher: Mr. Michels has made the greatest positive impact on my education because he

is such a positive force and a brilliant teacher. Extracurricular Activities: Soccer, Track, Swimming, Academic Team, Science Bowl, Pep Band, National Honor Society, Falconeers, Youth Leadership Billings, Fiddler on the Roof

most challenging and the most rewarding. While taking the class the instructor left it up to the students to learn the materials and gain the knowledge how to solve problems by themselves. It was also the most rewarding as I really enjoy the science of Physics and plan to go into that field of work. Teacher: My Calculus and Algebra teacher Mr. Joyce has made the biggest impact on my education for many reasons. One being

that I had him for 2 of my challenging classes in high school, both Honors Algebra and AP Calculus. He has completely shown me a new light on math and its capabilities. He has given me an all new appreciation for mathematics. Extracurricular Activities: Soccer, Tennis, Falconeers, Student Council, Academic Teams, Science Bowl, Engineers Club

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The most challenging high school class that I have taken is AP Calculus. Calculus is a form of math that is entirely different from the previous classes which made it difficult. Teacher: Mrs. Warren made the greatest impact on my education. As a fifth grader

she put me in a program that allowed me to attend 7th grade math the next year as a 6th grader. Since then I have been a year ahead in math. Extracurricular Activities: Soccer

SKYVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Caralyn Lagge Parents: Rich and Sharmi Lagge Middle School: Lockwood Middle School Elementary School: Lockwood Elementary School Future Plans: I plan to attend Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington to pursue a double major in Business Administration and Marketing. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: My AP English class this year has been the most

challenging class I’ve taken at Skyview. The work load for Mrs. Kenny’s class is more than I’ve been used to, but through that I’ve learned how to persevere and have become a much better writer in the process. Now I can go to college feeling confident in my writing capabilities. Teacher: My choir director Amy Logan has made a huge impact on who I am today. I’ve learned from being under her direction the

leadership traits that I’d like to carry on in the future and to take risks without the fear of failure. Being a part of the choir program at Skyview has been extremely influential in developing my character. Extracurricular Activities: Business Professionals of America, Skylights, Falconeers, varsity cheer and dance

ably Spanish. Even though Mr. Carlson and Mrs. Atkinson did a great job teaching and getting the class involved, Spanish was still difficult because learning another language requires a person to change their way of thinking and become efficient in switching from one language to another. Teacher: I have had a lot of teachers that made an impact on me, but Mr. Michels was the one teacher that changed my views on the environment. After taking his challenging

and rewarding course, I realized I want to study a branch of science that has potential in discovering new renewable energy sources. Extracurricular Activities: Skyview Soccer, Track and Field, Laurel Storm Soccer, Science Bowl, Educational Talent Search, Camp Invention, Falconeers, MCTM contestant

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The most rewarding class I have taken in high school is Big Brothers Big Sisters. I have been able to have the chance to be a positive role model to those who may not have one. I love getting to spend time with them during my school day. They always brighten my day. Teacher: Mrs. Schaff had the greatest positive impact on my education. She always made learning fun. Days were always fun and exciting in her second grade class. I loved how she always had classroom pets. I remember when we learned about potatoes

and got to make our own baked potatoes. I hope to become a teacher like her when I become a teacher. Extracurricular Activities: Family Career and Community Leaders of America, National Honors Society, Falconeers, Student Council, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Teen Ambassador at the Yellowstone Art Museum, Girl Scouts, Teach Kindergarten at my Church, VBS at my Church, and Softball with the Heights Little League

SKYVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Jordan Spitzer Parents: Dave and Teresa Spitzer Middle School: Castle Rock Middle School Elementary School: Eagle Cliffs Elementary School Future Plans: I am going to attend Montana State University Bozeman and study mechanical engineering. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The class that has been the most chal-

lenging was my honors physics class. Throughout the year we studied many different aspects of physics and some of the concepts have been harder to fully understand, unlike other classes I have taken. I love physics, it was just more challenging than previous classes. Teacher: My junior year chemistry teacher Mr. Michels was a teacher that always

pushed his students to be the best possible. He motivated me to always do better or at least try, and because of that I always want to do my best and don’t like to settle for anything less. Extracurricular Activities: Student Council, Track, Skiing

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Chemistry has been one of the best classes I have taken at Skyview because it constantly challenged me and I was always learning and growing. It also showed me a new subject that I am very interested and want to continue to learn more about. Teacher: Mr. Jeremy Carlson has made one

of the greatest impacts on my life. He has taught me many great lessons and helped me to become a better man. He is someone who I know I can always go to for help. He is always there to teach and support me. Extracurricular Activities: Student Council, Basketball, National Honors Society

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Over the past four years, the most rewarding classes I have taken have been my math classes, and specifically, calculus. While I take my calculus classes at MSU-B, and thus they aren’t technically a high school course, I believe they have both prepared me for college and motivated me to do the absolute best I can in all of my other classes. Teacher: The teacher who has made the greatest positive impact on my K-12 edu-

cation was my middle school counselor at Castle Rock, Mrs. Catron. When I moved to Montana in the middle of seventh grade, Mrs. Catron was the one who did the most when it came to helping me transition, and she always encouraged me to find new ways to challenge myself in school. Extracurricular Activities: Speech and Debate, Orchestra, Track and Field

WEST HIGH SCHOOL Trevor Canty Parents: Bryan and Stephanie Canty Middle School: Will James Middle School Elementary School: Arrowhead Elementary Future Plans: Attend University, study English and Mathematics, move to Europe, get a cool accent, come back to the U.S., and ski a lot more than I do now. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Dr.

Wendt’s AP U.S. History class was the most thought-provoking class I’ve taken. It was really the first time I realized that there is more than one legitimate way to view history, and further, the world today. (Even though he’d remonstrate me for using “today” so liberally.) Teacher: Too many to mention, but Mrs. Field, Dr. Wendt, Mr. West, and Mr. Edward made

my junior year pretty fun—even though I had a lot of homework. Extracurricular Activities: Track and Field, Speech and Debate, Spanish Club, National Honors Society, Student Advisory Board of Montana, Juggling, Photography, Writing, Reading, Hiking, West High Bear Mentoring, playing TowerFall, Science Bowl, etc.

Joshua Cherry Parents: Russ and Colleen Cherry Middle School: Will James Middle School Elementary School: Meadowlark Elementary Future Plans: Once I graduate, I plan to serve a two year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Afterward, I will attend some sort of post-secondary education. However, I do not know what school I want to attend or exactly what I want to

major in, so I have some decisions to make. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Honors English 3, which I took my junior year, was not exactly the most challenging class I have taken, but it was certainly rewarding. Opposed to standard difficulties, this class challenged me to change my way of thinking. I see the world in a different light, coming out of this class, and I am glad to have taken it. Teacher: Mrs. Aldrich, my sophomore World

History teacher, is one of my favorite teachers ever. While she could have made history about dry facts and dates, she taught a different way. Through the many focused projects and activities I participated in while in her class, I learned to see history from a different perspective. Extracurricular Activities: Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Calculus, because it has made me realize that math is not just algebra and geometry, it is a whole new way of broad and complex thinking. Teacher: The teacher that made the greatest positive impact on my education is Miss Meier, my Med Careers teacher in the first

semester of my senior year, because she really put time into helping me learn anatomy when she knew I had never had an anatomy class before. I could tell that she really cared about her class and how she taught. Extracurricular Activities: NHS, traveling softball, some volunteering for softball

WEST HIGH SCHOOL Wilson Harris Parents: Jay and Lisa Harris Middle School: Trinity Lutheran Elementary School: Trinity Lutheran Future Plans: I am currently undecided for the college I will attend, but I plan to earn a computer science degree, with the possibility of a business major or minor.

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: United States history Junior year has been one of the most rewarding classes because I learned to analyze history in a new way, write better essays, and argue for what I believe in. Teacher: Dr. Wendt, my U.S. History teacher, has left the greatest positive impact on my education. He challenged me academically,

which helped me to become a better student, and he has been a great mentor for making decisions about college. Extracurricular Activities: Basketball, Track and Field, Business Professionals of America, Chess Club, Key Club, Student Council, and Boys State

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: Probably my junior year Honors English class. The work load was heavy, but the most challenging and rewarding aspect of the class was that it forced me to see the world in so many different ways through the study of works of literature. Teacher: Lance Edward had the greatest positive impact on me. He taught me so much

about compassion and simply appreciating the human race and everything that comes along with it. I left his class with a completely different perspective on the world and the people within it than the one I held before. Extracurricular Activities: Business Professionals of America, Key Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Investment Club, Interact Club

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: My engineering classes at the Billings Career Center have both been the most challenging and the most rewarding. In these classes I am taking my math and science knowledge and utilizing it to develop solutions to problems. This is the challenging part because it requires a different mindset than most high school classes. Teacher: I met Mr. Kenney in eighth grade when he became my science bowl mentor

and has continued to mentor me throughout high school. He was the first person to stimulate my interest in science and engineering. Over the last few years he has taught me to work hard and continually push myself in any activity I am involved with. Extracurricular Activities: National Honor Society, Halos Baseball, Technology Student Association, Engineering Club, Spanish Club, Investment Club, Science Olympiad, Volunteer in science related activities.

my CPA License. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The most rewarding high school class for me has been my accounting classes because I have learned many business skills in these classes. Taking accounting has helped me decide my career path. Teacher: A teacher that has made the great-

est positive impact on my education is Mrs. Bogunovich. She has always encouraged me to do my best. She has also helped me develop strong leadership skills and perseverance. Extracurricular Activities: Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, Investment Club, German Club, Motocross

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: I think my English classes have been the most rewarding. English class requires that I think in a new perspective and read literature I may not have usually read. Furthermore, my English teachers have been some of the best teachers I have had. Teacher: Stephen Macartney, my sophomore honors English teacher and forensics coach, has made the greatest positive impact on

my education. He challenged me to think differently in class, and he continued to push and believe in me in my speech and debate endeavors. He has also been my main reference for activities such as MCC and AYLP Thailand. Extracurricular Activities: Speech and Debate, Montana Conservation , American Youth Leadership Program Thailand

rewarding high school class I ever took. This class was an elective, but my teacher Mr. Greene made it very challenging. He was tough and demanded more from us. As the year progressed, I really began to love Chemistry and decided that I wanted to pursue my future career in Chemistry. Teacher: It is impossible for me to name just

Parents: Chadd and Paula Wheeler Middle School: Riverside Middle School Elementary School: Big Sky Elementary School Future Plans: I plan to attend Montana State University in Bozeman this fall to study Software Engineering. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: My

most rewarding and challenging class of high school has been AP Calculus. It challenged me to use everything I have learned from my past math classes, and it taught me important skills that I will need for my future degree in engineering. Teacher: I would say that my earth science and chemistry teacher, Mr. Greene, made the

greatest positive impact on my education. He made every class period fun and challenging. He would also give us great advice for after high school like finding a career that you’ll love doing and have a great future in. Extracurricular Activities: National Honors Society, German Club, Volunteering at Billings Clinic, Orchestra

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: The most challenging high school class was Honors Biology my sophomore year. The woman teaching this class was known for handing out B’s, crushing all prospects for Valedictorian. I remember having test after test and barely getting 90% on them. She really liked birds and we did bird of the week-eek-eek. I got an A in her class so now we are friends. Teacher: Mr. Ryan Truscott, my 3rd grade teacher, has impacted my life the most. Up until this point I seldom went to school and

teachers did not care if I showed up or not. I was an angry kid who always got into trouble. Mr. Truscott took the time to show me that I had potential and was worth something. I thank Mr. Truscott for my success and motivation. taken. I was pushed to my academic limits and learned my passion for science in this class. The most important thing it taught me was the skill of scientific writing and writing professional laboratory reports. Teacher: My US History and Western Civilizations teacher, Mr. Shane Fairbanks has had a positive influence on my education in the way he has taught me and my classmates that it’s okay to be a nerd and that being passionate

about education and knowledge is an awesome thing. He so genuinely wanted all of us to learn the knowledge he gave us, it is inspiring. Following my undergraduate education, I want to attend law school to become an environmental lawyer. Most challenging or Rewarding Class: AP

Biology has by far been the most rigorous class I have taken in my high school career. The class has taught me so much more than conventional classes have. Dr. Wines pushes her students to become independent in their education. Dr. Wines has significantly developed my passion and knowledge of the sciences in my three years in her class. Teacher: My AP Calculus teacher, Mrs. Ellwein, has had the greatest impact on my

education. No teacher has pushed me as hard as she has. She only tolerates my best efforts and she makes sure I know when I do not satisfy her standards. She makes me want to work harder. She is incredibly efficient and organized and she is known for her tenacity in teaching. Extracurricular Activities: volleyball, tennis, speech and debate, science bowl, Kids Connecting Kids, piano, band, Eagle Mount, skiing

Most challenging or Rewarding Class: My most rewarding high school class has been AP Biology because it made me realize what a passion for biological sciences I have, especially concerning the brain. Teacher: One teacher who has made a greatly positive impact on my education is my U.S. History teacher, Mr. Shane Fairbanks. His

PLATINUM STUDENTS The Platinum Program at Billings Senior High was designed to provide students with an opportunity to engage in demanding high school coursework, as well as complete a Magnum Opus project. This program cultivates curious, independent and collaborative students and prepares them for successful college completion. Platinum students are required to take every honors and AP course offered at Senior High. They are also required to complete a Magnum Opus or capstone project during their junior and senior years, while still completing the rigorous coursework that honors and AP classes demand. The Magnum Opus reflects the students’ passions and solidifies their commitment to learning and the application of learning.

Kyrsta Binstock

Parents: David and Brenda Binstock Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Rose Park Elementary Future Plans: My post high school plans include attending MSU Bozeman next fall in pursuit of a major in business/accounting and a minor in photography. Teacher: One teacher who has made the

greatest impact on my education would be Jodi Stugelmeyer. She has always been there for me and has supported me. She always was there for the extra help when I needed it and has left a positive impact on my life by encouraging me to work harder. Motivation for Platinum Program: I joined the Platinum Program because I planned on

being in all honors classes throughout high school anyways and I was excited for the challenge. Magnum Opus: My Magnum Opus topic was on photography, specifically film photography. I learned about how the process of film photography works and then built a dark room at my house so I could develop pictures.

made the greatest impact on my educational career. She is the only teacher I have had throughout all four years of high school and has always supported me both in and out of class. If there was ever a recommendation or reference that I needed she would be one of the first people I ask. Motivation for Platinum Program: I was planning on staying in all honors classes

throughout high school from the beginning and I thought it would be interesting to create a project that is my own. I thought it would also help me with my future education and career. Magnum Opus: My Magnum Opus was based on building a robot. I learned how to create, program, and enable a robot to move.

PLATINUM STUDENTS Courtney Hutton Parents: Allan and Yolanda Hutton Middle School: Lewis and Clark Middle School Elementary School: Rose Park Elementary Future Plans: I plan to attend the University of Montana to pursue a degree in Exercise Sciences as well as Physical Therapy. Teacher: Mrs. Pfeifle, my Pre-calc teacher junior year. Math is my most challenging subject

and in the course of only one year she made it clear to me that I was capable and that she truly cared about my success in her class and beyond. Her passion for the subject coupled with her countless one on one hours with me really made an impact on me during high school. Thank you Mrs. Pfeifle, for everything. Motivation for Platinum Program: I wanted to challenge myself and I knew

colleges would look highly at individuals who completed a more difficult caliber of courses. Magnum Opus: My topic is assisting local veterans in the Billings and surrounding communities through a competitive race called The Warrior Run. My goal was to raise more funds for the local heroes who do not receive the recognition and adequate help they deserve.

elementary school teachers definitely gave me the confidence to believe in myself. After that the simplicity of middle school made me strive to challenge myself. Then in high school, I met so many wonderful teachers that supported me, there is no one that stands out as “the most impactful.” Motivation for Platinum Program: Other students, teachers, and my own will to be

the best I can. I have always liked rigorous learning, and the concept of the magnum opus was daunting at first, but it was a really eye-opening experience. Magnum Opus: I called it “Religion Shopping.” I researched 6 different types of religions, interviewed local religious leaders, and went to their services. It’s basically just my personal faith exploration put into a project.
