Get the Job — Spring 2019
Letter from the governor s governor, I know it’s critical for Montanans to A have good jobs that ensure they can support their families and their communities. And, in turn, working Montanans support the state’s economy. Montana’s economy continued to grow over the last year and added jobs and wage gains that benefit both businesses and workers. The state continues to foster entrepreneurship with over 2,900 new businesses created last year and 45,000 Montanans employed by businesses started in the last five years. Montana has the 4th fastest wage growth among states over the previous decade, and today, the average Montana worker earns $108 dollars more each week than they did six years ago. Diverse industries in Montana continue to grow. The health care industry contributed over $4.3 billion to the Montana economy last year, and other industries such as construction and financial activities are flourishing. As a nation, we are preparing for an extensive economic transformation due to technological advancement, changing demographics, and a labor force that calls for workers to have different skills than previous generations. In Montana, 100,000 Baby Boomers are set to retire in the next ten years, continuing an environment where workers are in high demand. We know the key to sustained economic growth and prosperity is the availability of a talented and trained workforce. That’s why my administration is taking the necessary steps to equip workers and students with new skills and helping businesses recruit and retain employees. We have prioritized partnerships with schools and businesses to introduce students early to meaningful careers and ensure they can be successful whether their next step is college or entering the workforce. The Montana Registered Apprenticeship Program offers businesses a way to find workers and customize their skills to meet their unique needs. In turn, workers can attain specialized training in an in-demand and high paying field. Apprentices earn a paycheck while training, can avoid student loan debt and potentially earn an average wage $20,000 higher than the statewide average. This year, our program set a record for participation and is helping meet workforce demands by offering apprenticeships in over 100 occupations, including high demand occupations in healthcare and construction. Additionally, the Montana Department of Labor & Industry provided career and training services to more than 51,000 Montana workers from 2017-2018. With more people working than ever before in our state’s history and a low unemployment rate, businesses need to be innovative in attracting workers whether by offering higher wages, modifications to workers with disabilities or flexible schedules for parents. As a state we’ve been working on removing barriers for parents to more fully participate in the workforce and improving long-term educational and workforce outcomes for our kids by securing publicly-funded preschool slots. It is critical that we utilize our workforce development tools and resources to ensure no Montanan is left behind. My administration will continue efforts to engage workers and businesses in addressing the unique challenges we face and expand opportunities for all Montanans to obtain a good job with a decent wage.

Negotiating
career change a
C
hanging careers can be overwhelming, especially if you have been in the same industry for most of your working life. Whether you are looking for a new challenge or becoming tired of your current-work environment — a new job may be in order. Before making the leap, it’s important to understand why you want to change careers and which field your skills would be useful in. Be sure you’re committed to the new experience before leaving behind the job you worked hard to attain.

Preparing Yourself
Entering a new career field is nothing to jump into blindly. Prepare yourself by researching your new industry. You should know what to expect regarding salary, benefits and number of hours you will work. It’s also important to have an emergency fund in your savings account. You’ll be glad it’s there if the new entry level job doesn’t offer the same compensation you’re used to. Experts at the American Institute of CPAs suggest having at least $15,000 set aside. The idea is having enough money to support yourself for three to six months
without an income.
Questions for Someone in the Industry
If a different industry has piqued your interest, reach out to someone already working in it and ask the hard questions before committing to a new career path. Here are some things to consider learning more about. • What is the typical workday like? • What is the average salary, initially, and what you can expect to earn long term?
• What are benefits like? Knowing what you should expect about a new job is crucial before leaving the position you are familiar with.
Facing Disappointment
Just like any job search, there are hurdles and letdowns when seeking a new career. Your lack of experience in a certain field may seem like it’s holding you back. If you are declined for the job, ask the interviewer for their opinion of why that was the result. Consider each failure as a learning experience to apply for your next opportunity.

FIND YOUR
DREAM JOB S ometimes, the hardest part of getting the job is finding out who is hiring. Luckily, with today’s technology, finding openings is easier than ever. In some cases, you can even apply from the comfort of your home. While the internet has made it simple to view a multitude of job openings at one time, making a personal appearance can be beneficial. If a listing says to apply in person, consider it an opportunity to make a great impression when you deliver your resume by hand. Make sure you dress in your best attire and engage the employee
with a warm and friendly greeting. While you’re there, asking to speak with a manager can show initiative and interest in the position. Here are a few of the most common ways you can find employers hiring in your area.
Online Listings
Apps, websites and email lists will give you access to many different openings in your area. Most allow you to set the mileage limits regarding how far away from your location you wish to search. Using this technology is the easiest way to compile a list of local companies
looking for employees. Another benefit to these listings is the amount of information they typically share about the position. You can gauge the qualifications, experience needed and sometimes the offered compensation, making it an easy task to see if the job is right for you before you even apply.
Newspaper Classifieds
Employers reach out to their communities by posting job openings in their local papers. Checking these sections can give you an edge on the competition as others may be solely relying on internet listings. Take the time to check the paper for information about how to apply and job requirements.
Networking
Word-of-mouth is another great way to find out about job openings. Consider asking peers who are involved in an industry you are interested in for job leads and references. Sometimes, companies are more willing to hire based on an employee recommendation.

Search like It’s Your Job S
earching for a job can be as passive or as active a task as you want it to be. The question is how bad do you want it? When you treat your job search as your first priority, you are guaranteed to see better results more quickly.
Customize Your Professional Documents The importance of keeping your resume up to date is obvious. It is also essential to customize your professional documents to each job for which you apply. If you are applying for several positions at once and have

ferences and organized networking events. You need to be able to sell yourself in two minutes or less; this is what professionals call the elevator pitch.
Network Often
Crafting and publishing original content on your professional social profiles is an effective way to demonstrate your knowledge and show people what you’re passionate about. This is about getting your name in front of leaders in your industry. Keep a routine publishing schedule, whether this is once per day, per week or every two weeks; the regularity will not only keep you writing

but will hopefully gain you a few followers.
Send a Thank You Note Send a quick note thanking each potential employer who took the time to interview you. This is your final opportunity to get your name in front of those with hiring power in a company and to leave them with a positive impression of you. This practice isn’t exclusively for interviews. By sending someone you met at a networking event a quick email soon after — even a brief, “it was so nice chatting with you this afternoon” — will help you grow your professional network.
Social Media: Friend or Foe?
Job searchers have a love-hate relationship with social media. On one hand, promoting yourself through sites like LinkedIn or Facebook can provide big benefits if your content is professional. However, recruiters will quickly turn down your application if your profiles showcase unethical behavior. Before applying for jobs, analyze your online presence to ensure your accounts show your commitment to a career.
How Employers Use Social Media A 2017 study by the group Career Builder showed 70 percent of employers are reviewing candidate’s social media profiles. Here are the statistics the report revealed about why applicants were turned down. • 38 percent of candidates posted information of drinking or drug
usage. • 39 percent of applicants posted provocative or inappropriate pictures, videos or information. • 23 percent revealed confidential information about a previous employer. On the other hand, social media can be helpful when advertising yourself to potential employers. These are the positive results from the report showing the types of content that landed people the job. • 38 percent revealed background information which supported professional qualifications. • 37 percent showcased great communication skills. • 36 percent were hired due to their professional image.
Clean up Your Digital Image Before you can create a more professional online presence, it’s important to analyze the state of
your profiles. Try a general inquiry of your name and location on a search engine and delete outdated accounts and inappropriate posts you made or are connected to. You want to paint your digital image as a wholesome, honest and professional portrait.
Be Active Showing you are relevant and active on social media accounts looks great to employers, especially if you are regularly posting information regarding the industry you are trying to break into. Show off your creative side and knowledge about topics you are an expert in. You may also benefit when delivering comments or posts that show your personality and a few of your interests. Hiring managers can learn a lot through this content and confirm you are a great fit for the role and their company.

DEALING WITH
RESUME
GAPS
P
utting together a resume always comes with a certain level of stress, even before an interview is scheduled and especially if there are gaps.
Remember, your resume was strong enough to gain you an interview. They are interested in you. Also, consider the fact that it is uncommon for anyone to stay with one (or even two or three) employers until retirement. It is all in how these gaps are framed. Here are the most common reasons for gaps on your resume and how you should address them.
You Were Laid Off This is nothing to be embarrassed about; job security isn’t what it used to be. The important thing is to speak well of your previous employer. Even if it wasn’t the most pleasant experience, bad-mouthing does nothing but make you look bad. Instead, talk about what you accomplished in your tenure there, what skills you developed and any accolades you earned. Then connect the experience to the job you hope to get by discussing how you would like to build on those skills with this company and how the company would benefit from your expertise.
You Left Your Previous Job for School Continuing your education at any level requires determination, hard work and ingenuity. These
G12

are qualities every employer is looking for. Finishing a degree demonstrated that you achieve the goals you set. Vocalize this. Now that you’ve accomplished your educational goals, you are excited for the opportunity to put that knowledge into practice and work towards your professional goals.
You Left Your Previous Job to Travel You want to connect the experience with your personal development. Yes, you had a blast and have a slew of amazing photos to prove it, but what did you gain from the experience? Maybe it taught you how to communicate better with others and appreciate a culture other than your own. Many prospective employers are looking for people who can not only perform the technical aspect of a job who that will fit in with the work culture and be an engaging and dynamic addition to their team.
RESEARCH POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS
One of the best ways to prepare for an interview is to get to know the company. When you show interest in the overall mission and are knowledgeable about their accomplishments, it shows an interviewer you are serious about getting on board.
Where to Find Information Today’s technology gives job seekers awesome tools to research a company. If they have a social media presence, that’s a great place to start. A simple search of their name can reveal charitable contributions, performance milestones and additions to their team. Be sure to mention things you relate to, regarding the strides they are taking to grow. Former or current employees will also give you an interesting perspective in how the company operates, internally. Reach out to your peers who have or had a relationship with the group to find out what they expect and what they look for in prospective hires.
Prepare for the Interview
Now that you know a little more, you should know how to share your research during the interview. Blatantly spouting out information can make you come off cocky or bland. Instead, plan how you will incorporate what you learned into the conversation. When a hiring manager asks if you have any questions about the company or position, it’s a great time to incorporate some of your research. You can ask them about recent milestones they made and what it took to achieve them. The more prepared you are with how you will present the research will make both yourself and the interviewer more comfortable during your meeting.
Research Clients and Services
Before you go into an interview, it’s also helpful to know the types of services you will be offering and a general idea of the clientele you reach out to. Understanding the crucial components of every operation, can help you strategize an effective way to stand out once you’re hired.

INTERVIEW There will be a point in a job interview when the hiring manager will ask if you have any questions about the position. Blandly responding “no” can make you look unprepared and worse, uninterested. Learn the right inquires to make and show you are passionate about the job. When considering what to ask, it’s important not to overwhelm the interviewer but you should avoid yes-or-no questions. Keep reading to learn more.
What is the Average Career Path for this Position? This question will show the interviewer you are interested in pursuing a career with their company. Make sure to express your desire to grow with the business and not sound like you’re already looking for a raise or promotion. The answer can reveal if the group trains their employees for greater things within the organization when it comes time for promotions. If you want the job long-term, make sure there is
room for you to grow internally.
Who is Your Biggest Competitor? When inquiring about the company’s competition, you are showing you are well-versed in the industry and the organization. It also is a good idea to ask the interviewer why the competitor’s presence creates a challenge. Make sure you have already done your research, it’s likely they will ask you for your input on a solution. It will look unprofessional if you don’t have a follow-up answer.
What is Your Favorite thing About the Company? Asking the interviewer his opinion of the organization can show you how passionate he is about his career. Employees who are well taken care of by their employers are quick to brag about the way they are treated. This answer also will give you insight into the culture of the company.
DRESSING FOR
SUCCESS
W
hen attending an interview, it is important to choose attire that shows you are serious about landing the job. In addition to picking the right clothing, you should also take special care to ensure they are tidy in appearance. Consider visiting the dry cleaners for commercial grade services. If you have several interviews in your future, it’s a good idea to return to the cleaner afterwards, so your clothes are ready for the next meeting. Remember these tips from employment advisors Monster when choosing your attire for these industries.
Tech Jobs
When interviewing for an entry-level position in a startup or technical position, a suit may be overdoing it. While you should still aim to look professional and approachable, experts recommend donning a collared shirt and khakis or slacks for men. Women can make an impact with a sweater or blouse and slacks. Of course, for higher-level jobs, suits are a must. © adobe stock

Government Position
If you are a prospect for a job within a government agency, it is important to dress in a responsible and mature fashion. Avoid being too flashy. A dark suit with a plain tie will make a statement that you are there to impress. Experts also recommend being conservative with jewelry, makeup and hairstyles.
Sales Professionals
For high-end sales jobs, a neat appearance makes an impact. The sales manager will want to see you in your best outfit to gauge how you will come across to clients. Do your research to judge the typical dress code in the office and decide to be bold with fashion or play it safe with solid colors. Consider the type of clientele that the product you’re selling will be focused on.
Finance
Financial positions require an employee who comes off neat, strict and honest. When you are meeting with a hiring manager, make sure your clothing has been pressed and your overall appearance is tidy.
THE THANK-YOU
LETTER One important strategy which job hunters forget is the power of sending a thank-you letter after an interview. It is a welcome gesture from hiring managers and emphasizes your interest for the position. Timing is everything when sending the document, especially if a decision will be made quickly.
Is it Really Important? The simple answer is yes, but the reasons why will show you the importance of this beneficial note. A recent study performed by CareerBuilder revealed that 22 percent of employers are less likely to hire a candidate who
skips sending a thank-you letter. Even more encouraging, 91 percent of hiring managers enjoy being thanked, which puts you in a positive light. Don’t wait too long, Monster Worldwide Inc. recommends sending the thankyou note 24 hours after the meeting.
What to Include Never send a generic response or copy a template you found online; this should be a personal letter which helps your submission stand out. Consider these tips from the American Management Association when crafting the perfect follow-up to an interview.

Getting to the Right Hands
Restate your value. Reiterate the qualities that make you a strong fit for the position and continue your interest in the opportunity. Be specific. Emphasize points from your conversation which impressed the hiring manager and showcases your qualifications. Keep it short and sweet. Don’t ramble on.

How you send your letter should rely on how the interviewer contacted you initially. For instance, a company who used email to schedule your meeting or ask questions should receive their note in the same way. The advantage of electronic mail is it will be received imme-
