Diet and exercise are synonymous with a healthy lifestyle. When coupled with routine exercise, a healthy diet is even more effective at sustaining long-term health. But just because the foods you eat might be healthy, that doesn’t always mean they’re safe. Food that is contaminated can lead to illness and possibly even death. For instance, even a small bite of food that’s contaminated with the botulism toxin can cost a person his or life or lead to paralysis. While a mistake with regards to food safety can prove costly, there are ways to prevent those mistakes. The following are some food safety measures men, women and children can take to ensure their food is safe for consumption, courtesy of the United States Department of Health & Human Services. continued on page 7

Marinate foods in the refrigerator
Always wash your hands before preparing or eating food
Marinating foods is very popular, especially during the barbecuing season. However, marinating foods at room temperature, when harmful germs in meat and bacteria can multiply rapidly, should be avoided at all costs. When marinating meat, poultry or seafood, always do so in the refrigerator.
Germs on your hands can contaminate food. Do not taste food to check if it is spoiled The bacteria that causes food poisoning has no taste, so tasting food to determine if it has spoiled won’t do you any good, but it can cause serious illness if the bacteria is present. Wash any plates or cutting boards that held raw meat Raw meat as well as poultry and seafood have germs that can spread, especially if you use the same plates or cutting boards for raw meat as you do cooked meat. Thoroughly scrub any dishes that held raw meat before using them for anything else.
Do not wash meat or poultry Some recipes, especially those for Thanksgiving turkey, advice home chefs to wash meat or poultry before cooking. However, doing so can spread bacteria to the sink, countertops and other kitchen surfaces. Despite what a recipe suggests, never wash meat, poultry or eggs.

Do not eat foods with uncooked eggs Eggs should always be cooked thoroughly, as they may contain harmful bacteria, including salmonella. How to reduce your risk for diabetes
Metro Services
Though aging increases a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes, a healthy lifestyle that includes routine exercise and a healthy diet can help men and women reduce that risk significantly.
Metro Services
Millions of people across the globe suffer from diabetes, a term used to describe a group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood pressure resulting from the body’s cells not responding properly to insulin and/or inadequate insulin production. According to researchers at Australia’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, if the spread of type 2 diabetes continues at its current rate, there will be roughly 439 million adults with diabetes across the globe in the year 2030. Though some cases of diabetes cannot be prevented, a healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, occur-
ring because the body does not use insulin properly. Initially, the pancreas will make extra insulin to account for the body’s resistance to insulin, but over time the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels. The risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases as people age, and while there is no way to halt the aging process, there are many other ways for men, women and children to reduce their risks of developing type 2 diabetes.

Focus on fiber Adding more fiber to your diet is another way to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Foods that are high in fiber tend to make people feel fuller, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Fiber also helps the body control its blood sugar levels, and fiber can lower a person’s risk of heart disease. Many foods include fiber, but some high-fiber foods include beans, fruits, nuts, and vegetables.

Avoid refined carbohydrates Studies have shown that diets rich in refined carbohydrates increase a person’s risk of developing diabetes, while additional studies have shown that diets rich in whole grains protect the body against diabetes. Researchers examining the results of several studies that explored the relationship between whole grains and diabetes found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains each day can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 21 percent. Refined carbohydrates, which can be found in white bread, white rice, mashed potatoes and many cereals, can cause sustained spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels and increase a person’s risk of diabetes.

disease and stroke. According to the American Diabetes Association, losing as little as 10 to 15 pounds can make a significant difference for people looking to reduce their risks of developing type 2 diabetes. When attempting to lose weight, men and women should recognize that making lifestyle changes is a more effective way to shed pounds and keep weight off than fad diets that may promise quick weight loss but tend to be less effective at keeping that weight off over the long haul. Successful weight loss typically involves a combination of physical activity and a healthy diet. Include physical activity as part of your daily routine several days per week, taking it slow at first if you have not exercised regularly in quite some time. As your body begins to adapt to exercise, you can gradually increase the intensity of your workout routines. Adopting a healthy diet is another way to lose weight and maintain that weight loss. A diet low in calories and fat is a good start. Men and women who need to lose a significant amount of weight may want to work with a dietitian and/or nutritionist to create a meal plan that is likely to produce the best results and address any vitamin or nutrient
deficiencies they might have.

How to cut back on the sugar in your diet
SUGAR Metro Services
Consuming sweetened beverages, baked goods and candy is how many people add sugar to their diets.
10
Many people have a love-hate relationship with sugar. They may love how it tastes, but they also may hate the effects sugar can have on their bodies. As a result, many men and women would love to reduce their sugar consumption. The American Heart Association reports that the average adult in the United States consumes 22 teaspoons of added sugar every day, which equals 150 pounds per year. Teenagers consume even more, averaging 34 teaspoons every day. According to Statistics Canada, Canadians consume an average of 110 grams, or 26 teaspoons, of sugar daily. These numbers are more than twice the amount of sugar a person should be eating. Healthy fruits, vegetables and some dairy products each contain sugar. But refined sugar is what can compromise a person’s health. When more than 10 percent of a person’s total calories come from added or refined sugar, this can prove harmful to both the mind and body. University of California, San Francisco researchers estimate that the 130,000 new cases of diabetes documented between 1990 and 2000 could be attributed to the increase of sugar-sweetened drinks. Those who drink 1 to 2 servings of sweetened beverages are 26 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes in their lifetimes than those who avoid such drinks. According to a 2008 study

published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, highglycemic foods, or those that are quickly broken down into glucose by the body, can lead to elevated rates of breakouts and acne. That’s because sugary foods and drinks may fuel inflammation and the production of excess sebum in the skin, resulting in pimples. When a person consumes more sugar than he or she needs, the excess may be stored in the body as triglycerides, a type of blood fat. Both high triglycerides and low HDL levels contribute to the hardening of your arteries. This condition increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and heart attack. Information published in the British Journal of Psychiatry indicates sugar may be responsible for mood swings and other mental disorders. Fluctuations in sugar levels can affect mood and metabolism. Fortunately, men and women looking to curtail their sugar consumption can do so in a variety of ways. continued on page 11

which reduces the temptation for overeating. Use whole grain pastas and breads when cooking, and opt for these foods when dining out.
Enjoy a sugar-free or low-sugar breakfast You may begin the day with a sugar rush if you consume too much sugar at the breakfast table. This will inevitably result in a sugar crash, after which you may overeat or gravitate toward more sugary products. Starting the day with whole grains and lean proteins is a healthier way to fuel the body at breakfast time.
Stock up on fruits and vegetables When you crave something sweet, grab a piece of fruit or a sweet vegetable, such as corn or beets. You will be consuming fewer calories and eating less processed sugar.
Opt for whole grains Whole grains have a lower glycemic index than refined grains, which means they won’t turn into a sugary powder keg in your body. They also will help you to feel fuller longer,
Research the amount of sugar in foods Read labels and ingredients to determine if sugar is hiding in the foods and beverages you consume. Anything that ends with the suffix “ose” is a derivative of sugar. Some restaurants will even add sugar to foods that don’t need them to make them irresistible and addicting, which is often the case with kids’ meals.
Cut sweetened drinks from your diet entirely Many people consume a substantial amount of sugar in their beverages. To avoid overconsumption of sugar, opt for water, unsweetened teas or diluted 100 percent fruit juice if you need something sweet. By cutting down on sugar, a person can gradually reduce his or her dependency on the sweet stuff and not even miss it. This may lead to improved dental health and a host of other medical benefits.

Reasons to include more dairy in your diet
Metro Services
A healthy diet can improve quality of life and reduce a person’s risk of developing disease or other negative health conditions. For example, a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can boost the immune system and promote cardiovascular health, lowering your risk of heart disease in the process. While the benefits of including fruits and vegetables in your diet are widely known, the medical benefits of dairy are often overlooked. The following are a handful of ways that dairy products like low-fat milk, cottage cheese and yogurt can make a nutritious and beneficial addition to your diet.

One major benefit of dairy is it’s a great source of vitamin D, which can improve bone health and might help reduce your risk of cancer.

Dairy may help lower your blood pressure Men and women with high blood pressure might benefit from including more dairy in their diets. In a study of 5,000 adults, Spanish researchers found that those who reported consuming the most low-fat dairy products were more than 50 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than those who consumed less low-fat dairy. Though researchers are not certain as to the reason behind low-fat dairy products’ impact on blood pressure, some theorize that their calcium and protein content are likely behind the benefit.

Why do we need fiber?
Metro Services
Many food products boast added fiber on their packaging. Breads, cookies, beverages, and so much more contain extra fiber in response to the public’s growing desire to consume foods with high levels of dietary fiber, which medical professionals claim is an essential element to a healthy diet. Despite that publicity, many consumers remain in the dark about the role fiber plays in the body.
About fiber Many people are aware of the importance of including fiber in the diet, but few people understand the importance of dietary fiber. Fiber is an essentially indigestible substance that is found mainly in the outer layers
of plants. Fiber will pass through the human digestive system virtually unchanged from when it was consumed and without being broken down into nutrients. Fiber is classified into two types: insoluble fiber, which will not dissolve in water, and soluble fiber, which can be dissolved. Insoluble fiber is typically found in whole grain products, dark leafy vegetables, green beans, wheat bran, corn bran, seeds, nuts, and skins of fruits and vegetables. Soluble fiber comes from foods like oats, nuts, fruits, and dried beans.

Skin cancer a concern no matter the season Skin cancer can affect anyone, and overexposure to the sun, a key risk factor for skin cancer, can occur at any time of year. Whether it is a hot, sultry day spent by the pool or a chilly day skiing the slopes, any exposure to the sun can result in skin damage that can increase a person’s risk for skin cancer. Plus, certain areas of the body are more susceptible than others.

(BPT) - Allergy season is behind us and before flu season strikes, now is the time for consumers to clean out their medicine cabinet and brush up on medication consumption and storage tips. A recent data brief from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that almost 50 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug per month. “Many of us keep multiple medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, in the house,” says JeQuithia Sims, pharmacy technician program chair at Everest College in Arlington, Texas. “But when stored or consumed incorrectly, medication can cause unexpected consequences.” Everest campuses across the country offer a pharmacy technician program that prepares students, through technical and practical training, for careers in aiding licensed pharmacists. Here Sims shares 10 pharmaceutical best practices to keep in mind when organizing the medicine cabinet.
Storing your medication Store in a cool, dry place While it varies by manufacturer, this rule stands true for most medications. A few simple storage locations might be in a medicine cabinet, on top of a dresser or on a designated shelf. If you have children, be sure to keep medications up high and out of reach.
Keep away from light Light can degrade medication more quickly than intended, so it’s important you don’t store medication in light-fi lled places such as a windowsill or under powerful indoor lighting.
Honor the expiration date Whether it’s an over-the-counter or prescription medication, old pills degrade over time and can cause a bacteria imbalance when consumed. Most medication

expires after one year, so use this as a rule of thumb when revisiting old pills. Before picking up that 500-count bottle of pain reliever because it’s a “better deal,” ask yourself if your household will consume all 500 pills that year. If not, it might be safer to grab the smaller bottle, and re-stock yearly.
Do not flush When disposing of expired, discolored, or unused prescription medications, be mindful of proper disposal practices by throwing medications away in the household trash or through your community’s medication disposal program. One of the easiest options is to take your unused or expired medications to your pharmacy and they will dispose of them properly. Flushing or pouring medication down the drain harms the environment, as sewage systems are not capable of removing medicines from the water released into lakes, rivers and oceans.
USING YOUR MEDICATION Note the warning label Even if you’ve taken the medication for years, it’s always a good idea to look at the warning label for consumption directions, as your doctor may have altered your dosage or the manufacturer slightly changed the consumption directions.
Consuming liquids is not the same as consuming water If the label instructs you to consume with water, be careful not to consume with other beverages. Juices and acidic drinks can cause the medication to break down faster than normal and hot drinks, such as coffee or tea, cause coated pills to melt too quickly in the stomach - not the intestine, where it’s intended to break down. This may produce side effects as harmful as stomach ulcers. continued on page 17

Your pharmacist is your friend Don’t forget that your pharmacist is an expert. When in doubt about the safety of consuming a medication for any given reason, your pharmacist is there to answer your questions.
Don’t lose the dropper
It might seem the same to use a household spoon with liquid medication, but the dropper or spoon provided by the pharmacy has been measured specifically for your intended dosTIPS FOR KIDS age. simply be given to children in smaller doses. Instead, seek a medication specifically designed for children.
Medicine is not candy Although referring to medicine as “candy” around children might be a tempting tactic to entice them to take it, parents should be wary of what might happen when they are not around. Children can easily get ahold of medication, consume large amounts and overdose.
Take a proactive approach to stress Few men and women can avoid stress. Be it a byproduct of a hectic work environment or the result of juggling a family and a career, stress is a part of life for many adults. In fact, according to a report from the American Psychological Association, 77 percent of adults experience physical symptoms of stress on a regular basis. The APA also notes that job pressure is the leading cause of stress, followed by money and health. Many adults cannot envision a scenario in which they aren’t worrying about work or their finances, so it’s easy to assume there’s little they can do to reduce their stress levels. However, there are several proactive steps men and women can take on a daily basis to reduce their stress levels in an attempt to live a healthier life.
Give yourself a little more leeway Work-related stress is not always a byproduct of tension with coworkers or a seemingly endless workload. For some, work-related stress starts on their way into the office and continues on their trip home at the end of the day. Sitting in traffic when you have to be at the office by a given time is a significant stressor for many men and women. In a 2011 independent study commissioned by the navigation product manufacturer TomTom®, researchers studied the
Metro Services
physiological stress markers in participants’ saliva and found that both men and women experienced an increase in stress when driving in traffic, even when they did not feel their stress levels increasing. Men had a particularly stressful experience when sitting in traffic, as their stress levels increased by 60 percent when driving in traffic (female stress levels increased by 8.7 percent in the same circumstances). To avoid such increases in stress, leave for work a little earlier in the morning. Giving yourself an extra 15 to 20 minutes to get to the office may help you respond more positively to rush-hour traffic, reducing your stress levels as you get ready for the day ahead. Leaving early may even allow you to take an alternate route to work that might be slightly out of the way but feature fewer motorists.
Get out from behind your desk Sitting behind a desk all day makes it easier to work through lunch, which can make your workday seem that much longer and that much more stressful. Take a more traditional lunch break, even if it’s only to the office kitchenette or cafeteria, so you can get away from your computer and think about something other than work for a little while. After lunch, take periodic breaks to stretch and to take a quick
breather. Get a glass of water or a cup of tea or just walk around. Such breaks can prevent existing stress from escalating further or can help you ward off workrelated stress entirely.
Make lifestyle changes Your lifestyle can either help you prevent stress or make stress that much worse. A healthy lifecontinued on page 21

The more you know about depression, the more likely you are able to help yourself or help others.
(BPT) - There are more than 19 million adults in the United States living with depression and many more people could be suffering but are unaware that what they are feeling is depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. This common and treatable illness affects people from all walks of life and can significantly interfere with a person’s behavior, physical health and interaction with others. The more you know about depression, the more likely you are able to help yourself or help others. While great strides have been made in recent years to educate the public about depression and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness, many myths still remain about the condition.

The Diagnostic Power of Sound Written by Buffy Stiles RT(R) RDMS RVT

If you asked most consumers what ultrasound is used for they may reference pregnancy or looking at babies in the womb. While ultrasound is a vital part in the diagnostic evaluation of an expectant woman and unborn fetus, this technology’s applications are numerous. In today’s healthcare setting, ultrasound is utilized everyday on men, women and children to evaluate health as well as help diagnose conditions when illness is suspected. Ultrasound, by definition, is an acoustic energy in the form of a sound wave. The word ultra means “beyond”- Ultrasound operates at a frequency above or beyond the range of human hearing, rendering it inaudible to the human ear. In the healthcare setting, ultrasound has been a viable diagnostic imaging tool for over 30 years. With continual advancements with this technology, the applications are growing in leaps and bounds. Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging tool that is non-invasive, painless and is used every day on patients because of the low cost, accuracy and accessibility. Ultrasound does not emit radiation, unlike CAT scan or X-rays. You lay comfortably on an open exam table, eliminating claustrophobia. The technologist will use a coupling gel on your skin surface being evaluated. This gel serves as a contact between your skin and the hand held instrument, called a transducer, the technologist will use to image with. Transducers come in all shapes and sizes; some used internally (endocavity) while most are used externally on the skin surface. A transducer is a crucial part of the ultrasound machine because it sends out sound waves and receives back those sound waves, which the machine converts into visual images of the anatomy being evaluated. In most instances, you will be able to “see” the images of their anatomy while it is happening on a viewing monitor. What is ultrasound used for? Safe for all ages and nonspecific to gender, ultrasound is used to evaluate liver, kidneys, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, thyroid as well as soft

Create a peaceful and healthy sleeping environment

It is easy to overlook the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Without adequate rest a person can be left feeling irritable, distracted and sluggish. Those who repeatedly do not get enough sleep could be facing other health problems as well. For some, the secret to getting a better sleep is modifying their sleeping environment. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate insufficient sleep has become a public health epidemic. An estimated 50 to 70 million American adults report having a sleep or wakefulness disorder, and women are twice as likely to suffer from insomnia than men. Plus, one in three people suffer from some form of insomnia during their lifetime, offers the organization Better Sleep for Life. In some instances, lack of sleep or too much sleep might be indicative of a medical condition, but it could just be related to poor sleep hygiene and an uncomfortable sleeping environment. Making

You will spend between seven to 10 hours in your bed each and every night. An uncomfortable mattress could be an underlying factor in your sleep problems. If your bed is several years old, it could pay to invest in a new mattress and box spring. If you sleep with your spouse and your bed is too small, upgrading to a larger size could provide the room you need. If you cannot afford a new mattress, buying a mattress topper in memory foam could mask any problems for the time being.
Balance light and dark In order to trigger sleepiness at the right time, it is essential to get at least 30 minutes of natural sunlight each day during the morning or afternoon. In the evening, begin dimming the lights to trigger the body’s natural internal clock and stimulate the production of the natural hormone melatonin, which relaxes the body into sleep. Keep a dark bedroom -- invest in blackout curtains if need be.

Giving your brain a noise to associate with relaxing sleep can help you drift off more quickly. White noise can also mask other sounds that may distract sleep, such as traffic outside or a partner snoring. Make the bedroom a cozy retreat Your bedroom should be a relaxing sanctuary. Fill it with cozy cushions and pillows. Make sure the room is clean and clutter-free. The APA notes that poor nutrition is the fifthleading cause of stress in the United States, so emphasizing a healthy diet may prevent the onset of stress or reduce its symptoms. Too much caffeine and sugar can cause mood and energy swings and negatively affect your ability to get a good night’s sleep. A bad night’s sleep will only exacerbate stressful situations

awake, so drop the temperature down at night and dress lightly for bed. You want to feel comfortable and not too hot or cold. If sleeplessness becomes a chronic problem and is not alleviated by changing the sleeping environment, visit a doctor.
Keep cool A cool bedroom is key to drifting off to sleep. Sweating and overheating can keep you throughout the day. In addition to eating a healthy diet and finding time to exercise, which may prevent stress or reduce its effects, you should limit your alcohol consumption and stop smoking if you are a smoker. Excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco or drug use are negative ways to cope with stress and will only make stress worse, while avoiding such triggers may help you prevent the onset of stress.
Reduce your workload The APA study found that 31 percent of
adults admitted to having difficulty managing their responsibilities at the office and at home. It’s difficult to reduce your workload at home, so consider doing so at the office. This can be as simple as delegating responsibilities more often or as significant as working less. Stress is associated with a host of ailments, including heart disease and a weakened immune system, so even those adults who feel they cannot budge with regard to their professional responsibilities might need to do so if workrelated stress has gotten out of hand, as the consequences of ignoring stress could prove dire.

The early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks neurons and essentially robs people of their memory and language skills. Although there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, there are therapies that can slow its neurological impact. Recognizing the early warning signs of Alzheimer’s can encourage people to begin treatments that can stave off some of the more debilitating symptoms of this disease. Though it’s most common among the elderly, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The Mayo Clinic says that the reasons behind the inception and progression of Alzheimer’s disease are largely unknown. It is believed damage starts a decade or more before problems become evident. Abnormal deposits of proteins begin to form the amyloid plaques and tau tangles throughout the brain, and these formations are the hallmarks of the disease. Once-healthy neurons gradually begin to lose their efficiency and ability to function and communicate with one another. As more neurons die, entire areas of the brain shrink. The hippocampus, which is the area of the brain essential in forming memories, may soon become compromised. Millions of people in North America are estimated to have Alzheimer’s disease and many
22
others will be diagnosed. The following are the most common early signs and symptoms of the disease. • Memory loss: According to the Alzheimer’s Organization, early memory loss can include forgetting important dates or repeatedly asking for the same information. Forgetting recently learned information and having to rely increasingly on memory aids is another potential indicator of Alzheimer’s. • Declining cognition: Impaired reasoning or judgment, trouble finding the right words and visual and spatial issues also may be early indicators of Alzheimer’s. • Difficulty completing familiar tasks: Those with Alzheimer’s sometimes have trouble driving to a familiar location or remembering the rules to a favorite game. People who were once good with numbers may now have difficulty balancing their checkbooks, while those who love to cook may have trouble following recipes. • Time confusion: Another indicator of Alzheimer’s disease is losing track of time. One may have trouble understanding something that isn’t happening in the present. Alzheimer’s sufferers often forget where they are and how they got there.

• Misplacing items: Everyone loses something at a point in time, but those with Alzheimer’s may put items in unusual places. They may sometimes accuse others of stealing when they cannot retrace their steps and find items. • Decreased judgment: Decision-making abilities may be compromised. A person with Alzheimer’s may take unnecessary risks or give away sums of money. • Mood changes: People with Alzheimer’s may suffer from confusion, suspicious feelings, depression and anxiety. A person may upset easily or become anxious outside of his or her comfort zones. Age and family history of Alzheimer’s disease are the biggest risk factors. The likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s doubles about every five years after age 65, says the Alzheimer’s Organization. In addition, those with a parent, child or sibling who have developed Alzheimer’s are more likely to develop the disease than people with no such family history. A physical and neurological exam, which may include blood tests and brain imaging, will be used to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals can learn more by making appointments with their doctors.
