Art Barn Challenge Anyone who has lived in Montana knows the weather will always be a hot topic. Mainly because the weather never stops changing. With that in mind, the 2018 MontanaFair Art Barn challenge is named “Weather or Not.” The idea of this year’s competition is to show weather in Montana in a unique and artistic form. “The weather is a massive creative force in Montana,” said Art Barn Superintendent, Catherine Dove. “We wanted to turn the artistic community loose on the beauty nature exposes and capture the very best of it for MontanaFair.” The Art Barn is the home of the Fine Arts competitions at MontanaFair. Inside the Art Barn’s home at Cedar Hall on the grounds, you’ll find great photography, paintings, drawings with various mediums, murals, wall hangings, and metal sculptures. Another special event at the Art Barn is Sunday. MSUB Art Department students will be showcasing Quik Draw portraits in the Art Barn at 1 p.m. Some of the art created by the students will be available for purchase. Wendy’s Kid’s Day When people think of the MontanaFair its the smells of funnel cakes and corn dogs come to life, the bright lights of the Midway appearing and the sound of laughter in the air. Many of those laughs come from kids giggling after getting off a ride or winning big at one of the many carnival games. This year you will hear the laughter the loudest on Wendy’s Kids’ Day Wednesday, August 15th. Wendy’s provides free admission for children 12 and under at MontanaFair from noon to 5pm. Ultimate Paintball
One of the best afternoons the MontanaFair staff had at the 2017 fair was 30 minutes invested playing Ultimate Paintball in the Heritage Building. The play was fast and fun. There was real team building involved in the play and the energy and excitement was huge for us. Somebody, to the delight of the entire crew, shot one of the upper management people between the eyes during one of the rounds. It is a safe, but also adrenaline filled game. Ultimate Paintball gives guests another unique way to have fun at MontanaFair. There is a target practice range to get a feel for how the equipment works and two different interactive play courses for teams or individuals to play. All required safety equipment is provided, a semi auto gun, mask, compressed air fills, and paintballs. Everything you need to battle it out. The paint used does not stain, but a brightly colored shirt is also provided for those that want to keep as clean as possible. Diamond Paintball will produce Ultimate Paintball for the second year. EEC Shuttle Bus There are 189 acres making up the MontanaFair/MetraPark campus. More than 3000 parking spaces and 925,000 square feet of paved parking are available on the grounds. With space that large, you want to save as many steps as you can before you get to the midway and the great fair food. One of Billings top design and construction firms, EEC, is the sponsor of the MontanaFair parking shuttles. The shuttles make their runs regularly throughout the entire fair moving people from the large upper parking lot at the grounds to the main gate. There are multiple shuttle stops in front of the arena, in front of Montana Pavilion, and at the stairwell at the foot of the lower parking lot leading to the arena. The EEC/MontanaFair parking shuttle is absolutely free. The shuttles run from noon to midnight each day of the fair. Catch a parking shuttle at the bright red EEC MontanaFair shuttle signs at locations in the fairgrounds parking lots.
Dana Bowman and Service to America Day MontanaFair and the Billings Breakfast Exchange Club focuses a lot of attention on veterans and those who have served America in the military. Past years have included salutes to World War 2 vets, women in the military, Vietnam, and Korean War veterans. Service comes in many forms. For 2018, the day has a new name and a broader purpose. Service to America day will continue to recognize the military veterans and their service to our country. Please see Attractions, 6

MontanaFair and the Breakfast Exchange Club want to salute their service on this day too. Corey Hasiak is President of the Exchange Club. “Supporting our military and first responders is one of three primary missions for the Billings Breakfast Exchange Club. We are pleased to be able to broaden the reach of this day and continue to highlight the men and women who serve. “ Any member of these groups will get admission to MontanaFair at no charge with the support of the Breakfast Exchange Club. There are a number of special activities planned through the day. It all starts with American flags being distributed by Breakfast Exchange Club members as guests come through the main gate of MontanaFair. The special pre-rodeo program begins at 6:45. Highlights include a special commemorative MontanaFair Challenge Coin will be given to any veteran or first responder on their entry to the rodeo, the ROTC program from MSUB presenting colors, and a spectacular skydive into the MontanaFair grounds by former member of the Army’s Golden Knights elite parachute jumping team, retired Army Sergeant Dana Bowman. Bowman’s jump and appearance is sponsored by Harvey Singh of Singh Contracting. Bowman was severely injured in a midair collision during a training jump in 1994. He became a double amputee as a result of his injuries. Nine months later, he turned this tragedy into a triumph when he became the first double amputee to reenlist in the United States Army. Bowman re-enlisted in the United States Army airborne style, skydiving with his commander into the ceremony, making his dream a reality. This achievement is just one example of Bowman’s many successes under adverse circumstances. After Dana’s re-enlistment, he became the U.S. Parachute Team’s lead speaker and recruiting commander. Dana has been fortunate to have the opportunity to let his speeches touch so many from the physically challenged to the able-bodied. He strives to show physically challenged people can still work and excel in today’s society and military. Dana emphasizes the words amputee and uselessness are not synonymous. Mighty Thomas Carnival, featuring all the kids’ rides and attractions. This year, Billings Clinic has combined with their partners at Children’s Hospital Colorado to make the area even better. The Billings Clinic/ Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids’ World has expanded to feature 32 rides, attractions, and games sure to entertain the young in your family. Mighty Thomas Carnival President/Owner John Hanschen, “with the sponsorship from these two great medical facilities, we were able to acquire and place more activities for kids. The Kids’ World attraction will be even better with this support.” Billings Clinic and Children’s Hospital Colorado formed a care alliance between the two facilities in 2017. The goal of the alliance is to provide children and their families with the highest level of coordinated medical care as close to home as possible. This al-
liance streamlines the coordination of care between the two organizations to ensure the right care at the right time at the right location. Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora is one of the top 10 children’s hospitals in the United States. Focusing on improving pediatric care was a major reason for the formation of the alliance. Seeing smiles on the faces of children is the end goal of both MontanaFair and Billings Clinic. Love Billings Day Love Billings Day, Saturday August 18, is an extension of the Love Billings Campaign started by Connoisseur Media. The idea began as a campaign to use the company’s radio stations in Billings to focus on a bullying problem in local schools. Using the combined media resources along with local businesses became a powerful way to raise awareness about the dangers of bullying and make Billings an even better place to live, work, play and raise a family. Each year since its inception, the campaign has worked to help local organizations with fundraising and awareness programs. During 2018, Love Billings has promoted many different organizations including: Montana Warrior Run for the American Legion Comedy Because Bright and Beautiful The programs of the Love Billings campaign have provided over $50,000 in inkind advertising during the past year.

This means the fair can start as early as August 7 or as late as August 13 depending on how the dates fall on the calendar. Sneak-A Peek was originally designed to give people a head start on fair fun by opening rides and letting people onto the fairgrounds to get their fair fix early. It has morphed into the day you see now. Gates opening at 4pm. Rides cranking up by 6pm. A concert, Dustin Lynch this year, is always on the schedule. And the fair food and beverages are readily available. Not every building or program is running on Sneak-A-Peek night, but some of the biggest and most visible parts of the fair are ready for you to sample. There’s one space you should definitely check. The Art Barn has its opening reception on Sneak A Peak night. Sneak A Peek night kicks off MontanaFair at 4pm August 10. Many of the discount offers to MontanaFair expire at 4pm August 10. Getting your fair tickets early will help your budget. Check MontanaFair.com for specials.
St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation Brain Injury Awareness Each day, the most valuable thing you possess goes uncovered, unprotected and is a split-second away from a potential life changing incident. That most valuable thing is your brain. St. Vincent Healthcare Foundation and Brain Injury Alliance of Montana are teaming up with MontanaFair on Thursday, August 16 for Brain Injury Awareness Day at MontanaFair. Any guests who bring a new, CPSC approved helmet for donation will receive free admission to the fair and the Yellowstone River Roundup. Brain injuries can occur during a variety of recreational activities – bicycle riding, sporting events, motorcycle riding, and rodeos. A recent story in the Billings Gazette described the brain injury suffered by Wyoming rodeo competitor, Dustin Martinez. Martinez had been rodeoing his entire life and couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to pursue his passion. “This is just something I’ve done since I was 4,” said the Panhandle State bull rider, who took ninth at the College National Finals Rodeo. “I started with sheep, rode calves, steers, bulls on up, and just was brought up rodeoing my whole life. Didn’t know anything else, kind of, and when they were telling me that ... man, reality kind of hit.” By “that,” he meant the fact that his rodeo career was possibly finished.
Martinez spent five and a half months recovering from a concussion; an injury that once looked like it might be careerending. Years ago, that probably wouldn’t have been a consideration in the roughand-tumble world of rodeo. But, as in other high-contact sports, some rodeo competitors now view head injuries as more serious than bodily ones. Brain injury is one of the most preventable public safety risks in the United States. “Around 40-percent of all emergency room trauma cases at St. Vincent Healthcare involve a brain injury. Many of which could have been prevented with proper safety protection,” said St. Vincent Neurologist, Jeffrey Mosser, MD. “You always want to wear appropriate helmet and head protection while recreating.” Recreational helmet use in Montana is well below the national average. In Montana, only riders under 18 are required to wear a helmet. The universal helmet requirement law passed in the Montana Legislature was repealed in 1977. Yellowstone County and Billings have the highest rate of motorcycle crash fatalities in Montana. Whatever you ride or drive, the use of a helmet can prevent tragedy. St. Vincent Healthcare and Brain Injury Alliance of Montana will distribute the donated helmets to patients and community members in need of proper head protection.
Big Sky Steel Rodeo Night Every year, MontanaFair is the biggest event in the state. Just like there’s a difference in rodeo bulls, fairs, or festivals, there’s a difference in steel companies. Billings locally owned and operated Big Sky Steel is a new sponsor of MontanaFair. Big Sky Steel has carved out a position as the place to go when you want the best prices on copper wire and recycled metals. The company completed an expansion and relocation of some of their operation to Lockwood on both Lockwood Road and the South Frontage Road. Now all Big Sky Steel products and services are in the same large footprint. This positive move allows locally owned Big Sky Steel to offer innovative solutions and competitive pricing. One of innovations at Big Sky Steel is the monthly Scrap Stakes drawing for prizes and cash. Customers enter to win when they bring scrap to the facility. In July, tickets to MontanaFair will be awarded to winners. There is also special “Tough as Steel” seating section at the rodeo this year, exclusive to Big Sky Steel winners. Big Sky Steel General Manager Matt Taylor, “We are excited to give our customers the chance to win prizes. MontanaFair is the biggest local event in Montana. Please see Attractions, 12

Franz Family Day MontanaFair is all about families having fun. Your local Franz/Sweetheart Bakery, where the Best Bread on the Planet is made, is joining in the fun at the fair this year. Franz Family Day at MontanaFair is the fair’s opening day, Saturday August 11. One of the ways Franz is doubling down on the fun is doubling up on the food. While there are a lot of great fabulous fair food choices at MontanaFair, many of them served on Franz/Sweetheart breads and buns, there’s something about a fresh grilled cheese sandwich. Franz/Sweetheart will be serving delicious and gooey samples of grilled cheese sandwiches at the entrance to Opportunity Farm presented by Opportunity Bank at MontanaFair. “We are big supporters of Montana agriculture,” said Ben Piatt, General Manager of the local operation. “Franz Sweetheart Bakery buys millions of pounds of Montana wheat each year for our bakeries in the northwest because it helps us bake the Best Bread on the Planet.” Franz Sweetheart employs 200 at its local factory and the three Franz Sweetheart Bakery Outlet stores in Yellowstone County.
Western Ranch Animal Expo The home of the “most comfortable animals in Montana” is the Western Ranch Animal Expo at MontanaFair. That’s a quote from MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher referring to the 63,000 square foot air-conditioned barn holding all the animals during shows at MontanaFair. You will be able to see and feel that comfort for yourself inside the Western Ranch Supply Animal Expo. There are all types of animals on display such as goats, hogs, sheep, turkeys, steer, rabbits, and cows just to name a few. Animals are one of the big attractions every year at MontanaFair. Western Ranch Supply with two Billings locations is a primary supplier to ranchers in Montana, Wyoming, and the western part of the Dakotas. Western Ranch Supply features a large line of animal care and handling products. This is the second year the business has been involved in sponsorship of the Animal Expo.

“From the beginning, Western Ranch Supply has focused on ag producers and 4-H,” said Keith Robinson of Western Ranch Supply. “Helping kids show their hard work and get recognized for the effort is important to our next generation and our food supply.” When you visit the Western Ranch Animal Expo, there are a few precautions to keep in mind. Animals shown on the floor of the building are in competition and being judged. Often you will see animals being prepared for their turn in the show ring. Be sure and practice proper safety when near farm animals. Always wash your hands thoroughly after leaving animal areas or after animal contact. Farm animals can expose you to pathogens which could make you ill. Frequent hand washing can help prevent illness. Taking precautions while enjoying the animals is the best way to protect yourself. Handwashing stations are provided in the Western Ranch Animal Expo and at other locations on the grounds by VIP Services.
Marketplace at MontanaFair Add to the list of things to do at MontanaFair is shopping. There are hundreds of vendors with great merchandise all over the fairgrounds. Many of these vendors are centered in the Marketplace at MontanaFair. The Marketplace at MontanaFair is in the large bay of the Montana Pavilion.
AUGUST 5, 2018 ¬ MontanaFair 2018
There are 98 vendors inside the Pavilion. Here are some of the kinds of items you can buy. Clothing, accessories, skin care, hair styling products, massage items, jewelry, hot tubs, mattresses, sheets and pillows, shoes, kitchen/household items, cutlery, body shapers, and scooters. You can shop and browse in air conditioned comfort as you walk through the 18,000 square foot space. Marketplace also provides one of the direct ticket entries into MontanaFair. The entrance on the north side of the building gets you to shopping and then on to the fair. If you are still looking to grab a bargain, look outside the Marketplace on the MontanaFair grounds. There are more than 100 vendors outside including DISH Network, Cowboy Junk, U.S. Army, Billings Clinic, and Billings Fire Department. New vendors this year at the fair include: Superior Sleep, Orange Expo Trading; First Class Bamboo; Hidow; Hawaiian Moon, Kitchen Helpers, and All Star Dips to name a few. Buffalo Wild Wings/ Intermountain Distributing The official start to every MontanaFair is the second Saturday in August. You can mark your calendar to the day MontanaFair will start. Then, there’s the early opening of the fair for the true connoisseur—Sneak a Peek night Friday at MontanaFair. “Sneak a Peek started when Bill Chiesa was the fair General Manager,” said current MontanaFair GM Bill Dutcher. “The idea was to give people a chance to get to the rides fi rst. It’s grown over the years to the spectacle you see today.” For years, Sneak a Peek night has been sponsored by two great local companies, Buffalo Wild Wings and Intermountain Distributing, the company that brings Anheuser Busch products to Yellowstone County. Being part of Sneak a Peek is important to both Buffalo Wild Wings and Intermountain Distributing. Brad Anderson is President of Anderson Management Group, the local operator of Buffalo Wild Wings. “This will be our 16th year in partnership with the MontanaFair. Buffalo Wild Wings is a family destination much like the MontanaFair. We value our relationship with MetraPark and look forward to our continuing this tradition for many years to come.” This year’s Sneak a Peek night will feature the mainland U.S. premiere of Black Out, the new extreme thrill ride by Mighty Thomas Carnival. Black Out is a whirling, spinning, extreme ride which has only one other appearance in the U.S. (Hawaii) before MontanaFair. This extreme ride is likely to have big lines from fans of fun on Sneak a Peek night. With only a half day of the operation on Sneak a Peek, gate admission price is only $5 per person. MontanaFair opens gates for Sneak a Peek Friday August 10 at 4pm. Rides start around 6pm. Country star Dustin Lynch kicks off the Pepsi Entertainment Series at MontanaFair Friday night at 7pm. 4-H Happenings
O
ne of the biggest and most active areas of the annual MontanaFair in Billings are the 4-H competitions. These competitions generate bragging rights and real money. In 2017, the Patrick K. Goggins Junior Livestock Sale logged over one half MILLION dollars in auction proceeds. This year there are 148 different agricultural divisions and 100 non-agricultural divisions of competition at MontanaFair. Handbooks and entry information for all divisions of competition, sponsored by EBMS and Northwest Farm Credit Services, can be found at MontanaFair.com under the Exhibitors tab. New at MontanaFair for 2018 is a separate special Facebook page specifically for MontanaFair Competitive Events. The new page was designed to further recognize the efforts of all competitors. “Knowing all the work that goes into these entries, we thought there should be more recognition given to the participants,” said MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher. “And with the amount of other activity going on during the fair, this allows us to really bring focus to the fair’s roots.” Over 10,000 entries were received in 2017 for the competitive events areas of MontanaFair with more than $95,000 awarded in cash premiums.
The area will include static displays on the five major agricultural products in the state—wheat, barley, sugar beets, cattle, and cover crops. The fair agricultural education consultant, Shelia Schenk from USDA, talks about the presentation. “We wanted to show our guests who may not be part of production agriculture how what farmers and ranchers do impacts them,” commented Shelia Schenk. “Every business in our community knows when producers have a good year, they have a good year. Opportunity Farm will be educational AND fun for everybody.” Opportunity Farm is set up as a walking path guiding you through the many areas of Montana Agriculture. You’ll see all the different kinds of wheat produced in the state and learn why the trade deals with foreign countries
Opportunity Farm The heart of MontanaFair is agricultural. As the biggest business in Montana, agriculture employs nearly 20,000 Montanans statewide and generated $4.6 BILLION dollars in product sales in the most recent available year. That’s 48% more revenue than Tourism by itself, and more than Oil and Gas, Lumber, and Mining produces all put together. Agriculture is big business and MontanaFair is moving agriculture to front and center. A new attraction for the fair is the opening of Opportunity Farm, presented by Opportunity Bank of Montana. Opportunity Farm is designed to help inform and educate the 980,000 Montanans who don’t work in production agriculture.

are important to Montana farmers. You’ll learn why the beer you purchase is absolutely dependent on Montana. Ever wonder the taste difference between cane sugar and beet sugar? Opportunity Farm can help you find the answer. There’s an interactive part to Opportunity Farm, with a live animal area inside the farm including mini donkeys, mini horses, goats, and potentially other animals for interaction with fair guests. If you are not in production agriculture, there is a lot of equipment on the farm or ranch that is likely a bit unfamiliar. Ag equipment providers in Yellowstone County and across Montana are providing a show of their own inside Opportunity Farm. Each piece of equipment will provide signage telling how it is used in the field and what price a producer would pay to buy the gear. The location of
Opportunity Farm, presented by Opportunity Bank, is in the front of the MontanaFair grounds, just inside the main gate and in front of the Western Ranch Animal Expo. Taking a few moments to tour the farm will answer lots of questions you might have about ag and leave you with a greater understanding of your food and those who produce it.
Patrick K. Goggins Junior Livestock Sale For kids who raise livestock to show at MontanaFair, Saturday August 18 has been circled on the calendar for many months. The Patrick K. Goggins Junior Livestock Sale at MontanaFair is the biggest sale of its kind in Montana. Last year more than 130 buyers spent over $500,000 purchasing animals from 4-H and FFA entries. Much of the money earned by 4-H Exhibitors from the sale is used for education or to begin to build their own production herd. The sale is a celebration of the hard work it takes to raise production animals. The sale is named for longtime agribusinessman Patrick Goggins who passed in 2016. The Goggins family remains heavily involved in the annual sale. Auctioneer Joe Goggins heads up the auction sales effort each year. Top buyers in 2017 included Animal Health International, Arrow Striping, Auto Auction of Montana, Cooney Livestock Trucking, Industrial Sales, Raw Machinery, Staley’s Tire, Stockman Bank, The Mighty Thomas Carnival, Thompson Cattle Company, Town and Country Supply, Western Ranch Supply, WS Livestock, and Yellowstone Valley Parts and Equipment. The Western Ag Reporter sponsors the buyers lunch ahead of the sale which begins Saturday at 12:30 in the Western Ranch Animal Expo. Livestock included in the sale are swine, market goats, lamb, market poultry, market rabbit, and cattle. Getting a buyer’s packet to be involved in the sale is easy. Contact the county extension office at 256-2828 for more information.
Thomas Carnival
N
ew rides, including one appearing for the fi rst time ever in the continental United States, are a few of the highlights for MontanaFair. Blacking Out on a ride is entirely possible at this year’s MontanaFair. Black Out is the newest and latest thrill ride coming to MontanaFair. Carnival President John Hanschen is looking forward to coming back to Billings for the fair. “MontanaFair is always one of our favorite places,” said Hanschen. “The people are great and it just brings out the best in all of us to be certain everyone has the best time.” This year, Hanschen and his team have arranged for the new ride Black Out to make its first continental United States appearance in Montana. On this mega attraction, twelve passengers are secured into gondolas that rotate and flip as the central arm swings eighty feet in the air. Black Out is similar to another long time MontanaFair staple, The Speed. The Speed’s wingspan is 140 feet—the arm rotates at a speed of 13 rpm and passengers in the gondolas at each end experience an intense G-force sensation. with one important exception. It also goes side to side as it catapults riders to the highest point on the MontanaFair grounds. The Speed is back at MontanaFair. You may need to take a moment to locate this popular ride. Speed is moving to an area on the other end of the fairgrounds near the Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids’ World. Making its way to Billings for the 2018 fair is another brand new spectacular ride, the Star Tower, now on a boat from overseas and scheduled to arrive in time for MontanaFair. The Star Tower is a ninetyfoot tall chair swing ride, providing thrills and a spectacular view of the Rimrocks— designed for older children and adults. While everything else seems to be going up, pricing for the carnival rides and games remain at the same levels as 2015. Pay one price wristbands are $30 for any of the riding periods, with special days and periods scattered liberally throughout the run of the fair. Sneak A Peek night opens MontanaFair Friday night with $22 wristbands and a $5 gate admission. Monday thru Friday afternoon ride wristbands are just $22, a 30% savings on normal pricing. There are other wallet savings specials available at MontanaFair.com Mighty Thomas Carnival has had a special relationship at MontanaFair for

many years. MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher likes this particular carnival. “The Circle of Excellence is given to less than 5% of the carnivals nationwide by the Outdoor Amusement Business Association,” said Dutcher. “Mighty Thomas Carnival is one of the carnivals in the circle. It makes us proud to bring such a high quality and safe organization to Billings for our guests to enjoy.” The Billings Clinic/Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids World is one of the big attractions of MontanaFair. Hanschen described what parents will find this year. “A lot of great classic rides will be back at Kids World this year,” said Hanschen. “The 100 foot fun slide, the Fun House, and Happy Face Bounce are just a few of the rides the kids will enjoy.”
The main carnival office is located on the midway and administrative staff is always available for questions and comments. Credit cards are accepted at our box offices, and ATMs are located on the midway. The carnival maintains a corner general store open to fair customers, stocked with a small variety of personal items they might have forgotten for their long day visiting the fair. Thomas Carnival classics: Tilt-a-Whirl, seven seats of undulating movement, was invented by the Minnesota Sellner family in 1927. The Tilt remains one of the most popular rides in America. The Merry-Go-Round (check out the artwork on the carousel horses), is an Allen Herschell model. Ours is “3-abreast”, a total of 30 horses. There are 3 galloping poses to choose from, and 6 different color
schemes. Children love to select their favorite horse. Crystal Lil’s House of Mirrors: two levels included: the lower mirror maze, and the upper level filled with crazy mirrors and a circular slide that takes you back to ground level. Dizzy Dragons from Sellner are green dragon riding capsules with smiling faces. This style is from the famous Sellner Spin Ride Limited collection. MontanaFair has the Billings Clinic/ Children’s Hospital Colorado Kids World with the Barnyard, the Speedway, and the Rio Grande Train, where the operator often wears an old-school engineer’s cap and rings a bell as the train departs the station. The whole family can enjoy the Up Up and Away, the U-Toob, the Wiggle Wurm, and the Airport—the seats accommodate both children and adults. The exciting Cliff hanger amusement ride with spectacular lighting is the only ride that flies customers through the air like Superman. And the Tornado has been upgraded with a new light package that can be seen for miles. Its open-air tubs spin under the control of the passengers. Other featured attractions on the Thomas Carnival midway this year at the fair: Monster Trucks: Wisdom Rides of Colorado built this popular children’s ride featuring realistic monster trucks with a pop-a-wheelie motion. Each car has sound effects and each rider has a steering wheel. Adults may accompany youngsters. Monster Trucks may be our most popular children’s attraction. Martian Maze: Adorable Martians are pictured on the scenery of the Martian Maze. Young children climb ladders, cross bridges, slide down slides, and walk through a rotating barrel. Frog Hopper: Another popular youth ride, this one with a hopping motion, was made by Utah’s S & S Sports. Adults may ride with the youngsters on the Frog Hopper, as well. More returning favorites include 100foot Fun Slide, and the Zamperla Mini Jet with 8 bold ships shaped like barrels melded into fantastic flying airplanes. The ride’s air compressor sends the ships hissing into the air for the imaginary trip over the fairgrounds. The crafts glide smoothly back down the ground after a 90 second flight. Carnival Continued from 15 façade. Inside, look for easy obstacles, visual tricks, spinning disks, and an exciting Barrel O Fun at the exit. Happy Face Bounce: Children under 42 inches enjoy jumping in the Thomas Carnival bounces. Our air-supported jumpers feature The Wacky Maze and Happy Faces. Gopher Golf: a round of challenging miniature golf is included with each day’s wristband. Look for the tall red, orange, and blue canvas on top of the carnival caddy shack. Keep score and ask about daily tournaments. Also included with a wristband purchase: one free attempt to Fool the Guesser for a small prize (your choice of age, weight, or birth month.) If the guesser misses by more than 2 years, 3 pounds, or 1 month, you win! The Scrambler is a carnival classic produced by the Eli Bridge Company out of Illinois. The seats interlace with each other as they spin, but they never touch, much like a giant egg beater. The Starship 4000 is Wisdom Manufacturing’s latest update of the archetypal space ship simulation. The feeling of weightlessness never gets old as the ship races around at over 20 revolutions per minute. This ride features groundbreaking technological advances in its mechanical operation as well as dazzling new lighting and scenery packages. Look for new colors and attractive new lighting on the Zipper. Chance Rides manufactures this quintessential thrill ride—cages spinning about 2 axes—thrilling and memorable. The trendy “Wacky Cowboy” coaster returns to Billings this year. The coaster features bright colors, a flashing LED light package, and a lead cowboy mouse with sheriff’s badge who guides riders through exciting dips and curves. Family groups enjoy this coaster, together. The focal point of the midway is the towering Century Wheel, a 70 foot Ferris wheel with gondola-style seating—providing in-thecloud enjoyment for guests ranging from family units to brand new friends attending their first fair together. The Century Wheel is Thomas Carnival’s most popular ride. The Chance Rides Thunderbolt boasts alternating red and blue cars circling a center point that pivots outward— by centrifugal force. Passengers end up sideways as the toboggans swing to navigate the hilly track! And the mighty Pharaoh’s Fury appears to be an ocean vessel with an artistic Egyptian Pharaoh’s head sculpture at each end. Swinging in an arc 54 feet high, the Pharaoh’s Fury takes passengers from horizontal to vertical. You’ll witness scores of passengers thrill to the momentary weightless effect as the boat rises high, reverses motion, then
16
R plunges. One cool ride. Adventurous riders also enjoy the exciting wave action of Moby Dick, built in Colorado by Wisdom rides. Bystanders laugh as the Moby riders’ feet swing in synchrony to the movement of this riding machine adorned with a painted mural of a giant whale swimming the high seas. Our “ground-mounted” Bumper Cars sits at eye level. One more great ride to watch from the sidelines. Youngsters meeting the height requirement often get their first driving experience in the Thomas Carnival Dodgem Cars. Popular carnival games include water races, the duck pond, balloon pop, basketball, break-a-bottle, big ring-o-bottle, grab bag, fish ‘til you win game, bulldozer-token push, and the rope ladder. Everyone enjoys the colorful prizes: teddy bears, dogs, frogs, computer portraits, buttons, T-shirts, wall-hangings and a fantastic array of neat trinkets and novelties. And something new: Foot Darts— soccer balls kicked towards 30-foot-tall Velcro- covered target board—aim to score big to win a prize. Enjoy tasty traditional fair food items on the midway, including corn dogs, foot long hot dogs, cheese steaks, caramel and candy apples, nachos, pickles, funnel cakes, pizza, hamburgers, popcorn, cotton candy, sno-cones, and soft drinks. The Midway Pastries has a newage automated lemon squeezer device made of clear plastic—you can watch the fresh juice being produced and delivered to your own cup. The other stands have catchy names and logos, including the Sugar Barn, the Sweet Spot, and the Midway Grill.

imrock Auto Arena has hosted some of the biggest performers in history. The stage has seen entertainers from Elton John and Mötley Crüe to George Strait and the Eagles. Just over one year ago, Garth Brooks brought his world tour to Billings for the 4th time. Now, talent from Billings and all around Montana will be able to perform in the same place and use the same dressing rooms as these legendary performers. It will be a real star treatment at MontanaFair. The Timesquare Furniture Community Stage moves inside Rimrock Auto Arena for the 2018 MontanaFair. Being inside the arena gives guests and performers a number of advantages. Environmental control along with guest and performer comfort are high on the list of advantages in the new location. MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher, “How cool will it be to use the same dressing facilities the stars use when they come to Rimrock Auto Arena,” said Dutcher. “The programming of the stage will work better for everyone. Seating for guests to watch will be vastly improved. With MetraPark concessions just a few steps away, this will be a great experience.” Sandy Wong is the coordinator and producer of the Timesquare Furniture Community Stage for MontanaFair. The stage features singers, dance troupes, and local performers of all types. Programming on the stage begins on Monday during Senior Day at MontanaFair with country singer Marty Davis performing at noon. Marty brings to the stage the color, excitement, and harmony of the stars of the Silver Screen and the singing cowboy era. Brian Anderson, VP Operations Manager of Timesquare Furniture explained why. “We want you to have a sense of community when you do business with Timesquare Furniture,” said Anderson. “We are part of this community every day as a locally owned and locally operated store. Many times when you buy at our shop, you walk out with the item that day. Being community focused is important to you and to us.”
‘bone-a-fied’ act to audiences across the western states since 2009 exciting and entertaining all ages with spine tingling three part harmonies, homespun vocal styling, boot stomping music and well- seasoned showmanship. THE ROCK BOTTOM BOYS tickle brains and warp reality by singing iconic rock hits like ‘Pinball Wizard’ and ‘Gimme Three Steps’ to tunes like ‘Wabash Cannonball’ or ‘Mountain Dew’ gluing audiences to their seats in anticipation of what might be next. While the heart pumping music alone is irresistible, once engaged folks are riveted by the boys’ back porch clowning and hillbilly notions. THE ROCK BOTTOM BOYS have the versatility to perform in venues of all sizes ranging from small intimate rooms to large amphitheaters. Their shows are light hearted, humorous, and intimate good fun for audiences from age 8 to 80. Playing at the Exchange Club Patio three times daily from August 10-15.

VIP Services Think of the logistics of supplying 114 restrooms and handwashing stations over 189 acres of MontanaFair property. Our team’s job is to ensure none of these facilities run out of anything—paper, soap, or towels as they are being used by 225,000 people over nine days. That’s the job VIP Services, Inc. tackles every year at MontanaFair. VIP, owned by Charlie Loveridge, has worked the fair for more than two decades making sure all is ready for people to have a wonderful fair experience. “We make sure restrooms are stocked and clean so people can focus on fun,” said Loveridge. “It’s a big job but one we accept with great pride and must be right every time.” VIP has installed several portable handwashing stations throughout the grounds for guest convenience. VIP also is hard at work during the fair keeping the grounds litter free and trash properly removed. “We are very focused on keeping our guests healthy,” said MontanaFair General Manager Bill Dutcher. “Anytime there is a possibility of animal/human interaction, we want a handwashing station available for use. VIP’s assistance in making this available is very appreciated.” VIP Services is the largest full service property maintenance company in the Yellowstone Valley region. Offering both exterior and interior services, they provide a single call source for all of your maintenance needs. You will see VIP Services, Inc. signage throughout Yellowstone County and MontanaFair. Please see Attractions, 18

Heritage Arts One of the most visited places at MontanaFair is the Heritage Arts exhibits inside Montana Pavilion. It is the creativity and skill shown in these entries which keeps people coming back each year. MontanaFair, which started as the Midland Empire Fair, began as a way for people to show and sell their products and crafts. The social media sharing site, Pinterest, wasn’t around then to share ideas so coming to market was a big deal. After winter, the local county fair provided a way to show off a little bit by submitting your crafts and designs in a blue ribbon competition with your friends and neighbors. Heritage Arts is our acknowledgement of those times at MontanaFair. The Heritage Arts Department is filled with decorative arts, art needlework, horticulture, and culinary arts. All entries in this department are open entries. In the Montana Pavilion you can find handcrafted sewing projects, quilts, canned goods, gourds, pickles, potted plants, cakes, wine, petunias, scrapbooks, cookware demonstrations, and handcrafted leather goods. You’ll find divisions for seniors and youth, spinning, machine knitting, textile
