Grounds Entertainment T

here is plenty of entertainment at MontanaFair - more than 23 live shows every day of the fair over its nine day run. Here are some examples of the great professional entertainment you’ll find at MontanaFair. THE ROCK BOTTOM BOYS will perform nightly at the Exchange Club Patio and Mango and Dango will bring a variety show on their own custom stage near 4th Avenue. You can also catch Coyote Wild and the High Country Cowboys daily at the Montana Army National Guard Stage and Lady Houdini will also have a custom stage near 4th Avenue for her show. All Star Stunt Dogs will bring kids and animal lovers of all ages to Kids World. Adding excitement to the grounds are strolling puppets Animal Cracker Conspiracy and magician Jeff Martin.

Mighty Thomas Carnival Enjoy hours of fun at the Mighty Thomas Carnival, a longtime tradition at MontanaFair. The focal point of the Thomas Carnival midway is the towering Century Wheel, a 70 foot Ferris wheel with gondola-style seating—providing in-thecloud enjoyment for guests ranging from family units to brand new friends attending their first fair together (the Century Wheel is Thomas Carnival’s most popular ride.) Two rides will be presented from the “Extreme” genre in Billings this year: Courtesy Photos The Speed is huge, and sensational— just eight people experience it at a time, Above: Professional touring band, THE ROCK BOTTOM BOYS, play three times daily on the Exchange sitting in back-to-back twosomes at Club Patio. Share the experience with a friend! The Speed draws a late-night crowd of people-watchers meeting old friends regaling in the soft summer breeze. The second Extreme attraction is the Ejection Seat—customers are strapped into the harness and transported quickly 150 feet up into the Montana sky via bungee cords. Pricing on these attractions is separate from normal carnival tickets and wristbands. Adventurous riders can also enjoy the exciting wave action of Moby Dick, built in Colorado by Wisdom rides. The Super Shot is the 90-foot tall free fall drop tower—another attraction that draws a crowd observing the curious reactions of riders who have completed the free fall to firm ground. The Super Shot is made by A.R.M. from Ohio, utilizing true physics of earth magnets to provide smooth reliable braking. The “ground-mounted” Bumper Cars sets right at eye level, each structural piece unloaded from a two-trailer combination. One more great ride to watch from the sidelines. Sneak A Peek Night Sneak A Peek was originally designed to give people a head start on fair fun by opening rides and letting people onto the fairgrounds to get their fair fix early. It has morphed into the day you see now - a concert is always on the schedule, and fair food and beverages are readily available. Not every building or program is running on Sneak A Peek night, but some of the biggest and most visible parts of the fair are ready for you to sample. Gates will open for Sneak A Peek night at 4 pm on Friday, August 11 with rides cranking up by 6 pm.

Yellowstone River Roundup PRCA Rodeo August 17, 18 and 19

T

he 2016 Yellowstone River Roundup at MontanaFair had the largest purse in the rodeo’s history and more than 600 competitors. The YRR is expected to eclipse that again in 2017. The fair is scheduled t o have over 500 cowboys and a total purse of over $110,000 making it one of the top 40 rodeos in the United States. F i n a l nu mb ers aren’t available until the entries and draw is complete, but the YRR remains one of the top pro rodeo stops in Montana. The Yellowstone River Roundup in the Northern Hotel Grandstands is sponsored by Shipton’s Big R. There are three night performances August 17, 18, and 19. Each performance begins at 7pm. For real rodeo fans, slack is always a big draw. Slack occurs when there are too many participants to give every performer a time slot in the night time performances. Slack will also be in the Northern Hotel Grandstands each day. The rodeo has grown consistently since it moved to the Grandstands and its affiliation with PRCA in 2011. Sankey Rodeo Company of Joliet will provide the stock and assist in producing the fair rodeo again in 2017.

Fair Food

O

ne of MontanaFair’s favorites is the opportunity to grab that great fair food. For this week only, set your diet aside and come to MontanaFair. There are hundreds of foods and drinks to choose from, many are available only at the fair. Everyone loves the traditional corn dog, cotton candy, funnel cakes, lemonade, and sno-cones. Or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, why not try Walleye on a stick, strawberry shortcake kabobs, fried Oreo cookies, or chocolate covered bacon? Go with the usual or try something new. It’s all good! The selection of foods at MontanaFair is like a culinary trip around the world. The midway offers Mexican fare, including tacos, burritos, and fajitas. Asian food includes egg rolls,

This year the Heritage Building will be transformed into a gritty battlefield. Your skill and cunningness will be tested as you enter the realm of Ultimate Paintball provided by Diamond Paintball of Billings. There are courses for all ages and even an opportunity for a little target practice. You can choose from the inflatable zone with unique objects protecting you from the paintball projectiles, or try the Urban Adventure where you work through a make shift urban landscape hunting your prey. When you play Ultimate Paintball, you will receive a semi auto gun, mask and 100 paintballs to start your journey in the courses. The great part about this game is the non-staining paint. Just wear your fair clothes and be prepared to ready, aim, fire.

MontanaFair Days MSU Billings Day Montana State University Billings Day at MontanaFair is Sunday, August 13. The university has been a big part of MontanaFair in recent years by researching ideas to improve fair attendance. The addition of comedy to fair entertainment was driven in part by research from the school’s business department. During MSU Billings Day at MontanaFair, the university Science department will have a special program, the MSU Billings Atomic Circus, on the Timesquare Furniture Community Stage. MSU Billings is progressing toward its goal of building the new Yellowstone Science and Allied Health Building. The current science building at MSU Billings went into operation in 1947. The renovated building will allow MSU Billings to serve students for another half century. The 30,000 square foot expansion will include 16 labs dedicated solely to teaching, and 11 labs dedicated to research, including a separate athletic training lab. You will find safe, stateof-the-art facilities in a LEED certified building, including tripled lab hood space, labs appropriate for athletic testing, and electrical systems supporting all necessary equipment. The campaign to raise money for the building continues today.

Seniors Day with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana MontanaFair in cooperation with the Yellowstone County Adult Resource Alliance and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana presents Seniors Day Monday, August 14. On Seniors Day, we salute the contributions seniors have made and continue to make to our community. One out of every six people in Yellowstone County is a senior. On Seniors Day, seniors are admitted free thanks to the generosity of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana. There’s a free lunch provided by community partners and the Yellowstone County Adult Resource Alliance and singer Marty Davis takes the stage to entertain. The first Seniors Day at MontanaFair in 2010 drew nearly 500 participants. This year, the expectation is for more than 1,200 seniors to enjoy a great day at MontanaFair. Shuttles
