Let’s get ready Billings!

F

irst, congratulations to the Wells Fargo NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship athletes, coaches, administrators, families and fans whom are Billings-bound this week. What a great opportunity for our community from both an event and economic impact perspective. 32 teams. 31 games. Six days. One champion. March 15th-21st at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. We hope to see you there! This tournament is a huge opportunity for the region. The people who will fill our hotels, restaurants, retailers and attractions are crucial to the local economy. At the same time, this is a chance to witness a caliber of basketball play that promises to be action-packed and intense. The female student athletes who will compete at Rimrock Auto Arena have worked their entire lives to reach this crescendo of competition. For some it’s the highlight of their lives to date and for many, they’ll talk about it 20 years from now with friends and families as they reminisce. What we hope is that memories of their time in Billings, Yellowstone County and Montana are equally as memorable and that with this tournament, we foster lifelong visitors to Montana’s Trailhead.

Alex Tyson of Visit Billings speaks last month during a press conference announcing sponsors for the NAIA women’s basketball championship.

Been there, done that By MIKE FERGUSON mferguson@billingsgazette.com As she works to make the Wells Fargo NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship memorable for the 32 teams vying for the crown, Alex Tyson has an ace up her sleeve. It’s her husband, Calvin, a former Rocky Mountain College point guard who played in the NAIA men’s championship tournament in Tulsa, Okla., during the 1993-94 season. “It’s mostly the same for men and women players — they all want that ‘wow’ factor,”

Learn more More information about the championship is at www.visitbillings.com/naia.php. said Tyson, executive director of Visit Billings. Billings has a two-year agreement with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to host the women’s Division I championship at the Rimrock Auto Arena. This year the tournament runs March 15-21. “I ask him, ‘Do you remember this or

that? Would this have an impact on players?’” Tyson said of her husband. “When they are 40, I want (players) to be able to tell their kids about the national championship they played for in Billings. There’s a definite responsibility there, and I hope that the community takes that to heart.” While tournament organizers, business leaders and especially those in the hospitality industry have been busy laying out the red carpet for fans and the 770 players, coaches and staff who began arriving in town Saturday, the community will also benefit from their arrival, Tyson said.

Here’s how: Players will fan out to dozens of Billings schools Monday and Tuesday, telling students why character counts “and about the impacts of respect and honesty and doing great things for your community,” Tyson said. “Some principals have told us, ‘We really need this. For our students, it’s a learning moment.’” On Tuesday, the Red Lion Hotel and Convention Center will host what’s being billed as the student athlete experience. General Manager Ron Spence said the timing of planned renovation — including improved lighting and a new sound system, and

possibly an upgrade to the facility’s fiberoptic internet access — has worked out well for Tuesday’s gala event. The renovation closed the convention center for about a month before it reopened over the weekend for a walleye fish fry attended by about 750 anglers. “We will try to show the players a fantastic evening,” Spence said, including a red-carpet walk for photo ops, ice carvings featuring colorful “mocktails,” and a handserved dinner prepared by chefs and “full of great things we hope they will enjoy,” Spence said. “We want them to walk away saying they had a great time,” he said. “Our staff has been around for a long time. They know how to make it happen.” The athletes, coaches and other team staff will be staying at more than a dozen Billings hotels. With multiple teams lodging at some hotels, organizers have spread out the favorites who might well be staying for most, if not all, of the tournament. Front-end staff, including desk clerks, housekeepers and servers, will be sporting buttons welcoming the teams and their fans. When teams began landing at Billings Logan International Airport Saturday, they were greeted not only by a smiling welcoming committee, but a large tournament decal on the floor at baggage claim. “Players from colleges in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Kansas, Texas or Arkansas — they may know Montana a little, but probably not Billings,” Tyson said. “If we are successful, the next time they’re on their way to Yellowstone (National Park), they’ll choose to see Billings, too.” Participating hotels have agreed to offer teams and their fans special rates, and they’ve had those rooms blocked off since last fall. institution — giving each school an hour of practice time every day during the tournament. Over the past few weeks, a number of tournament officials and volunteers have quietly taken care of scores of details. According to Tyson, one is Rocky Mountain College’s associate director of athletics, Jeff Malby. Consider that early on in the tournament, the scorer’s table must be staffed morning, noon and night, with backups lined up in case of sickness. All those scorers not only need to be fed, they need, well, score books. “We couldn’t do this without people like Jeff,” Tyson said. “He deserves some props here.” While she may worry that some games won’t attract large crowds at MetraPark, Tyson has a ready speech for residents thinking about taking in a game or two — or even more than that. “Even if you’re not a sports fan, just come out for the experience,” she said. “We have done everything we can think of logistically, with easy parking and ticket discounts (after 6 p.m., admission to remaining games is $10 for adults, $5 for students). “I think people will be surprised at the energy in the building and how much fun it is for these players to live out their college dreams. To be able to witness that and cheer that on, to watch all that emotion and pride — that’ll be worth it.”

Nothing matches the intensity and excitement of two great teams going head to head on the court, giving it their all. When that happens, and the final buzzer has sounded, players and fans alike leave with a greater appreciation for the game.
