1714 ISLAND VIEW • JOSEPHINE CROSSING
McCall Homes
Nordic farmhouse in a Billings community By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com
All the charm of a farmhouse with plenty of modern design elements make the home at 1714 Island View Dr. unique for all the right reasons. The concept is called “Scandinavian Farmhouse,” explains Carolee Smith of McCall Homes. The idea capitalizes on plenty of light and the clean squarish lines of a farmhouse, but incorporates modern elements. The two-level house features three bedrooms and 2½ bathrooms in a 2,200-square-foot design. Though the home is compact, it continues McCall’s trend of using space smartly in the popular Josephine Crossing community. Coupled with the abundant natural light, this home feels spacious. The exterior is a traditional white, reminiscent of a farmhouse. The windows of a dining area and the entry to the house are reminiscent of an oldfashioned wrap-around porch. This is the perfect home for folks who want the pastoral look and feel, but the convenience of being centrally located to virtually everywhere in Billings. Lighter-toned luxury vinyl plank flooring help give it an airy feel. Windows with black interior trim pop against the clean white walls. Sunlight is abundant and plays beautifully with the white kitchen cabinetry and the white quartz countertops. The stainless steel appliances continue the clean, crisp feeling and frosted glass on the top row of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry give it a perfect touch. A deep single-bowl kitchen sink with stainless steel apron and a sink faucet that could have
been borrowed from a professional commercial kitchen add tremendous functionality to this nearly glowing house. A great room with a built-in alder bench and mantle are the centerpiece of the house, inviting guests and family to make themselves comfortable. An off-set rectangular fireplace gives the room a warm feel against a backdrop of light wood planking on the way that continues the farmhouse theme. The three-car garage enters behind the kitchen and is out of sight with a break-way area for coats and shoes. McCall builders love the open floor plans, but it’s important to design areas where things like shoes and groceries can be inconspicuous. A half-bath near the garage provides an out-of-the-way main floor bathroom. Behind the kitchen is a deep walk-in pantry that not only maximizes the space, but keeps the focus on the kitchen and the great room. The second-level has the three bedrooms, including the master bathroom. The stairway leading up to the second level features an alder banister with cabling that merges the farmhouse and modern themes perfectly. A large window allows natural light to stream in, not making it dark like many stairways. The second floor opens up into another living space that works
as a recreation room or even a large playroom for kids with the added benefit of separating two bedrooms from the master bedroom. “When we don’t build a basement, it’s important for us to keep the living space,” McCall said. “Many don’t want to build a basement just to have it become the place where they put stuff. This allows us to open it up and be more livable.” The Island View home has the laundry room on the second floor, meaning that hauling clothes is never too arduous. Laundry also stays out of sight if company comes to visit. The master bedroom and bathroom have plenty of living space. The bathroom has a sliding barn door. Its double vanity and shower also have a touch of modern. The sinks have elevated rectangular bowls. The bathroom has a freestanding soaking tub as well. The shower also picks up a new concept with textured tile and a metal glass door that slides like a barn door. “We love this new concept. It really makes the shower stand out and unique,” Smith said.

2703 TULANE CIRCLE • MONT VISTA
Mont Vista Homes
The best of all worlds By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com
It’s hard to know which to love more at 2703 Tulane Dr. — the new or the old. There’s the new contemporary loft design that gives the home a spacious, light feel with features from the latest home building styles. Or, the line of cottonwood trees that will be part of a natural city park that makes this home feel as if it’s secluded and private while literally being in the heart of one of the most desirable locations in Billings. Situated in Mont Vista, the area is among the most convenient — close to the new Ben Steele Middle School, within walking distance of a soon-to-be-built grocery store and drug store. And, it’s surrounded on two sides by park land, meaning this home will combine the best of urban and rural atmosphere. Mont Vista’s Dallas Delhousaye loved working with the homebuyer to create a contemporary home that added features that make it stand out while being comfortable. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom is a two-story home that opens part of the second floor with a loft concept to a great room that faces south and lets an incredible amount of sunlight stream in. The great room features a custom-built dark stone
linear fireplace that makes the area a focal point of the house, perfect for entertaining or simply enjoying the backyard view. “Since it is always going to be a park, this is a view that will never change, which is something that you can’t always guarantee in a new subdivision,” Delhousaye said. The rest of the main level of the house, which is approximately 1,600 square feet, has an efficient layout. The kitchen and dining area are near the great room, capitalizing on the natural light without interrupting the flow. Quartz counters and plenty of pantry space, including a full walk-in pantry next to the mudroom, give enough room to cook and entertain without gobbling up square footage. A frosted glass pantry is one of the contemporary design elements that pick up on different glass and metal textures throughout. The hand-railing on the staircase features custom ironwork that is picked up again in ironwork in the mantle, giving it a stylish linear feel without being cold and too formal. The master bedroom continues the trend of transom windows and light. Three windows allow for light and privacy. “This house will not need lights

until the evening,” Delhousaye said. A double sound-proofed wall ensures that noise from the great room doesn’t disrupt the quiet in the master bedroom. The master bathroom, like the other bathrooms, has a floating vanity that is underlit with LED lights, making it easy to light at night without turning on all the fixtures. One of the most unique features is a walk-in shower that has white textured tile that creates a wave pattern. When the shower is on, the water shimmers down the tile in a waterfall pattern, giving it a one-of-a-kind effect. The main level features the other bedroom off to the side, separated from the master bedroom and living space for privacy. The upper level has the remaining two bedrooms for a total of four bedrooms. The upper-level bathroom vanity area is separated from the tub
and the stool by a door, meaning two people can be using the same bathroom while having privacy for each. The backyard has a patio that looks into the city park land and has two gas flame pillar lights that will work as cornerstones to the hot tub for softer, ambient light. The home on Tulane Circle takes contemporary design elements and incorporates them into the house, using straight lines and some metal elements. The walls have beveling at the corners which tie into the 20-foot fireplace in the great room. The floorboard trim is recessed so all the walls are flush. And, modern light fixtures stand out as a conversation piece. “It’s really great the synergy we had with these home buyers because we kept on bringing ideas and incorporating them into this house,” Delhousaye said. “This was fun because we got to try something new and this house just shines.”

4714 SILVER CREEK TRAIL • SILVER CREEK ESTATES
Newman Built Quality Homes
Modern and art
By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com
This modern masterpiece by Newman Quality Homes looks like art and features works of art. Clint Schultz, a designer with Newman, explained that this year’s offering on the 2017 Parade of Homes continues to use a modern look in a way that appeals to a wider group. The home keeps the feel of a modern design — sleek, angular and with clean, definite lines. Yet, the house also is soft enough to feel comfortable and inviting. Not only does it feature a modern design, it also boasts actual art. New to Newman’s design this year will be a collaboration with area artist Judd Thompson. Thompson created several original pieces of art that will be featured as part of the house, using the same colors and design sensibilities, Schultz said. The concept for the Silver Creek House centers on gathering spaces and one-of-a-kind textures or details that can’t easily be found elsewhere, if at all. For example, tiling throughout the house’s bathrooms uses a houndstooth pattern, and the railing and banister were designed from a rock grader, Schultz said. Those elements combine for a memorable home that
is not overblown. Other tile in the house has a “broken mosiac” pattern that is repeated in different designs on both levels of this two-level home. The colors navy blue, black and silver make the house’s color stand out with its design and yet the colors are subtle enough to blend in with the common earthy tones found throughout the Magic City. “The sandy color really doesn’t speak to the modern design,” Schultz said. The modern look is warmed throughout the house by using black walnut in floating shelves and in the vanity of the master bathroom. Speaking of which, pocket doors separate the master bathroom and the main-floor laundry making transferring clothes just a step away from the washer and dryer, rather than across the house. The entryway has two rows of exposed columns with LED lighting that are meant to focus the attention toward and draw people close to the living room and kitchen — central gathering spaces in the house. The open flooring plan allows the kitchen to be an anchoring location. It’s easy to go to either the dining room or the living room from the kitchen. Sixteen windows allow
for not only spectacular views of Billings toward the South Hills, but also generate plenty of natural light. The white cabinetry of the kitchen, complete with silver metallic trim help give the space a clean, bright dimension. “We wanted it to be bright and inviting and not cold, stark and industrial which is what some people think when they think ‘modern,’” Schultz said. Two bedrooms on the main floor are to the side of the living space, separate for privacy and not meant to detract from the living area. The house features nearly 4,000 square feet of space, almost all of which is finished. Schultz said that one room in the basement remains unfinished to be used as storage room or finished for a specific purpose by the owner.
The basement also has a rectangular living room area meant to host different areas, for example a game table that won’t interfere with a television or other entertainment equipment. In total, the house features five bedrooms. This Newman home also picks up the trend that continues in popularity — laundry hook-ups on each floor. The basement features hook-ups in a closet so that laundry doesn’t have to be hauled up and down the stairs. The basement also appears larger than normal and that’s literally by design. Schultz said each one of Newman’s basement homes come with 9-foot ceilings and deep window wells to allow for plenty of light. “In Billings, basements are a thing. We want them to have a spacious feel,” Schultz said.

3131 IRON HORSE TRAIL, #11 • REHBERG RANCH
Trailhead Builders
Montana convenience with Southwest flare By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com New Mexican design meets new construction in the Pines townhouse development in Rehberg Ranch. Mark Allen of Trailhead Builders said the luxury townhouse at 3131 Iron Horse Trail has added touches of Southwestern style that fit perfectly with the juniper and the sandstone surrounding the popular Billings Heights subdivision. The 3,200-square foot, two-level home uses its design and space to seem much larger than most townhomes. An asymmetrical floor plan gives a larger feel, not boxy like some developments. The craftsman style front is fitting for the Southwest feel because of the
large wood beams. Throughout the home, the trim, casing and wood is largely stained alder. Allen explained the walls throughout the home are special. They are all hand-finished for an adobe-like texture. The walls have a medium brown (Sherwin Williams’ Saddle Tan) that is reminiscent of an adobe home. Different shades of browns are incorporated into the Spanish-style theme. And though Billings is a long way from the southern border, the colors are all at home in the Magic City with the browns of the Rims and the earthy greens of the pine trees.

5640 PHANTOM CREEK AVE. •TRAILS WEST
Trailswest Homes
Room to live By Darrell Ehrlick • dehrlick@billingsgazette.com
It isn’t just a home, it’s a place with plenty of space to live. That’s the concept, said Trails West developer and builder Rod Wilson of the 3,232-square foot home in Billings’ West End. The five-bedroom, three-bathroom house takes efficient use of space and beauty to create a home that has plenty of extras without having too much of anything. “I like that there are so many places to be independent,” Wilson said. The home on Phantom Creek Avenue, one of the latest phases of the popular Trails West subdivision just south of the newly opened Ben Steele Middle School, easily feels bigger than it is. A large front porch continues the concept that Wilson and his partners have had since the first house in Trails West. It’s not just about a location or a particular house, it’s about a feeling of neighborhood and community. Every home has a yard lamp and porch. The home on Phantom Creek has a front porch as well as a backyard patio to maximize the space and enjoy views of the Rims. The front of the house opens into

a living room with raised ceilings. Darker luxury vinyl flooring has the benefit of easy maintenance without the worries of scratching like hardwood. “We’re finding most of our customers want something else besides carpet on the main floor,” Wilson said. A great example of use of space can be found in the kitchen area. A dining area is off to the side in an L-shaped configuration. The kitchen has plenty of cabinetry, and a twotiered, three-sided island to maximize counter space. The island has an eating bar than can be used for light meals or entertaining guests in the living room. The two-tiered system means that food can be prepared without interfering with food service. The appliances, all smudgeless stainless steel from Frigidaire, include a raised built-in dishwasher. Wilson said this is a new concept which helps save a homeowner’s back from bending down to put dishes in and get them out. Two of the three bedrooms on the main floor are separate from the master bedroom for privacy. “They can be used as guest rooms,
a den or office or even a hobby room and the great thing is that they’re totally to the side. People can do their own thing or have their own parts of the house,” Wilson said. Two of the main-floor bedrooms have transom windows which allow for the south-facing sunlight, but are placed high enough for privacy. The master bedroom features a spacious walk-in closet and a half-bathroom with two vanities. Separated vanities is also a concept that is catching on. “I always tell couples this will settle the argument of who is getting toothpaste on the mirror,” Wilson said. The lower-level features a widerthan-average staircase which comes in handy for moving furniture and for comfort, Wilson said. The basement opens up into a very large living area, big enough for

couches, tables and a large gaming table. This wonderful living area is separated by the stairway in another L-shaped pattern which allows for some privacy or the flexibility to arrange the large gathering space in a number of different ways. Deep window wells allow for plenty of natural light, especially from the south and east facing directions. Doors throughout the house are three-paneled and have a design reminiscent of a farmhouse. The lower-level has two large bedrooms and a full bathroom which follow the same concept — plenty of living space. Like the other rooms on the main level, the bedrooms are to the side and can access the bathroom without walking across the house. This Phantom Creek home adds a unique twist on the three-car garage. The larger two-car portion has a partition and doorway to the third stall. Wilson explains that this allows for a hobbyist to have an almost completely separated workshop. Or, it would allow a person to put another vehicle or recreation equipment in another part of the garage without being able to see from the main twocar area.
