Readers’ Choice is a special advertising section of The Billings Gazette.
In an era earmarked by online shopping, couponing and BOGO sales, (that’s buy one, get one free for the lay shopper) it comes as a bit of a surprise that the vast majority of this year’s Readers’ Choice recipients distinguish themselves from the competition not by their blowout sales, not by free shipping and handling, but by something that too few businesses put a premium on these days—customer service. It’s an archaic concept to be sure, but it’s one long since lost in the realm of retail-a-palooza and grab bag shopping. Who needs excellent customer service if omitting it translates into savings for me, right? Wrong. The vast majority of Billings spoke up, and we heard them loud and clear. They said the reason they shop, dine and spend their money across our fair city depends largely on how they’re treated while they’re there. Billings, it seems, puts stock in quality over quantity and excellence over expedience. And the ones ahead of the curve, well, they offer both— savings and quality customer care.
A community that cares
Readers’ Choice is our way of showing appreciation to all the local all-stars that elevate our fair city to new heights. From coffee to culture, chiropractic’s to karaoke, we acknowledge the job well done by some of Billings’ best businesses. Reader participation is crucial to this section, and everyone who submitted nominations for Readers’ Choice was eligible to win one of two Readers’ Choice gift certificates. We would like to congratulate the following winners who were chosen at random: John Harris, Billings, MT and Natalie Holloway, Billings, MT.
Thank you, readers! Readers’ Choice is a true reflection of your thoughtful dedication.

PLACES & FUN Bowling Center Sunset Bowl 1625 Central Ave.
For some, bowling is in the blood. For others, it’s a fun way to spend time with friends and family. Either way, Billings-area readers have voted Sunset Bowl their favorite bowling center for the eighth year in a row. Jeanne Moses, general manager for more than 40 years, notes, “We have something for every age, from toddlers to those in their 90s.” In fact, she notes that owner Frank Pratt, who is in the latter age group, comes out to bowl several times a week. Sunset offers birthday parties, disc bowling, bumper bowling along with both leagues and open bowling times during daytime and weekend hours. The original bowling alley was built on Grand Avenue during the mid-1950s, and Sunset Bowl has been a Billings icon for more than 55 years.

All personal trainers and instructors are nationally certified to ensure that clients have the safest, most up-to-date health and fitness information available—a big nod to their motto “Get Fit, Live Well.” In addition, they offer fitness classes for children ages 2-12, and clients may also work with an on-site massage therapist and registered certified nutritionist/dietitian to compliment the overall wellness of their workouts. Pioneer Park is one of the oldest parks in Billings and was dedicated in the early 1990s to the pioneers who founded the area. There are more than 2,800 acres of parkland within the city limits, Pioneer Park takes up 30 of those acres—so what separates this park from the rest? “It provides facilities for
a wide range of people,” said Mike Whitaker, Parks and Rec Director in Billings. “It has tennis courts, green open space, a wading pool, the Zimmerman center, disc golf and more.” Whitaker added that statistically, Pioneer Park is the busiest park in Billings, with Riverfront Park as a close second. “I encourage people to go out and enjoy,” he said.

Less than a year after opening the business, Vuletich shares that good feeling with 27 classes each week. But it’s yoga with a twist: the room is typically a moist 100 degrees. It is that unique environment, says Vuletich, which attracts clients. The sauna-type room enhances the detoxifying aspect of yoga while allowing the muscles to stretch deeper into a pose. Car Dealer Preowned
Hertz Car Sales 2851 King Ave. W.
When asked why Hertz Car Sales earned the Readers’ Choice award for pre-owned car dealer eight years in a row, general manager Keith McNally reported, “It’s simple, really. We are honest and take care of people. We value integrity and operate by the Golden Rule.” Hertz carries a variety of vehicles makes, models and types but can also pull inventory from five different stores. McNally opened the Billings store in 2003 and since has experienced very little staff turnover—in fact, he often buys lunch for his
employees and points out what they are doing right. In addition, he attempts to meet each and every customer at some point during their sales process. Those simple details create a dignified, trusting relationship that works. Hertz will once again donate $50 to the Billings Food Bank in the name of their customers during the holiday season.

ern living, and today’s farmers and ranchers continue that time-honored tradition. For 63 years, Shipton’s Big R has existed to provide these hardworking people with quality products at everyday low prices along with excellent customer service. “Montanans are genuine people and a large part of their legacy is working the land and animals” said Jay Carroll, co-owner of Shipton’s Big R. “Ranchers and farmers and those who live the rural & western lifestyle are at the heart of what we do.” Shipton’s Big R has been a mainstay for more than three generations. The staff works hard at watching market trends which means continually bringing new & innovative products to their customers. “Our buyers are very active and attend the best tradeshows in the U.S.A.” Carroll said. While the stores remain rooted in farm and ranch supplies, they have also expanded offerings to accommodate the growing needs of their customers. Inside, customers will find large sporting goods departments with a full selection of firearms. This department includes recent expansions of camping, fishing and outdoor gear. Other departments include clothing & apparel, animal health & tack, lawn & garden, pet and western jewelry. “We have lawn mowers, chain saws, snow throwers, string trimmers – anything a customer needs for their home or business. Friends of NRA is also proudly sponsored. “We host some fun promotions like our annual upcoming Pet-o-ween Pet Costume Contest,” said Carroll. The store is also involved in bringing unique events to Billings. This past year, Shipton’s Big R brought in the Smith & Wesson Truck & Trailer – a sporting goods showcase on wheels. “It was the first time this display has been to Montana,” noted Carroll. During the PBR (Pro Bull Riders), the store invites celebrity cowboys to meet the public and sign autographs. “Shipton’s Big R is all about our customer – the farmer, the rancher, the outdoorsman, the working man and everyone else” said Carroll.

But it doesn’t seem like work to Nellie, who deeply enjoys getting to know each one of her customers. Whether she’s in the kitchen or working out front, Nellie enjoys and appreciates each person who sets foot through the door. Guests can select from any number of fromscratch, authentic selections. Be sure to order extra salsa (it’s Nellie’s favorite and is made from scratch every day.)

Montana Brewing Company 113 N. Broadway
Brewing is an art form to Sean Graves and his staff at Montana Brewing Company. Just the right mixture of barley, hops— fermented just so—taking the time to get it perfect. It must be this attention to detail that has afforded Graves and the Brew Pub to continue receiving national accolades for their beer, winning more awards than all other Montana breweries combined.
Also a huge thank you to the amazing players and parents on the ‘99 Thunder Blades. Last years’ 3rd place in the Nation was amazing!

Sirloins, rib eyes, New Yorks and fillets—Bull Mountain Grille serves all their steaks a cut above the competition. And the reason they taste so good is because owner Duane Hauge is so particular in where he gets his meat.

City Brew is this year’s Readers’ Choice recipient for best coffee shop, an award they have won the past 12 years.
Steaks at Bull Mountain Grille are from local stock and are hand-cut in house, never frozen. Sub Sandwich Jimmy John’s 805 24th St. W. 122 N. Broadway
You placed your order, you put down the phone, you look up and they’re there—with a smile. Fresh and freaky fast is the mantra of one of Billings’
newest sandwich shops, Jimmy John’s. Owned by Jeff and Kristen Yeley with their parents, Jim and Shirlee, Jimmy John’s features a variety of sub concoctions on freshly-baked bread. They also offer the carbconscious “unwich,” which is basically a sandwich wrapped in lettuce minus the bread. Jimmy John’s 24th Street location opened in 2010 with the downtown location following soon thereafter. Construction is currently underway for a Heights location, soon to be operational in November.
