OCTOBER 2018 | READERS’ CHOICE

READERS’ CHOICE: More readers, more choices By DARRELL EHRLICK dehrlick@billingsgazette.com Last week, I stopped by a local business. At the front of their business, almost as prominent as their store logo, was a Billings Gazette logo. I stopped and looked. It was the gothic-font “G” of the Gazette — yellow and black, and then a “Readers’ Choice” ribbon beneath. I couldn’t recall the business winning the honor previously since I have been involved with several years’ worth of publication. Beneath the “Readers’ Choice” ribbon there was a year. It was an award from nearly a decade ago. Readers’ Choice matters — it matters to readers and it means a heck of a lot to businesses. It’s a point of pride, competition and information. Though it would be tempting to think that we take the same categories, poll the same audience and come up with the award winners year after year, the process is constantly being refined and the categories change as the business, service and entertainment options in Billings change. This year — as in years past — we have changed the categories a bit. We have added, for example, financial adviser, medical cannabis provider and wedding photographer categories. It’s a good example of how Billings and its tastes are changing and diversifying. When we started the Readers’ Choice awards, who would have imagined that Billings would have fierce competition for best Thai food? As we approach Readers’ Choice season at The Gazette, we look around and see what’s new. We see what services or businesses are popular. Our goal is to not only highlight our readers’ and the community’s most popular places for business, it’s also to provide a service for folks. These businesses have

worked hard to establish themselves as favorites and worked hard to grow a loyal base of customers. In a place like Billings, where word-of-mouth means something, winning this award is indeed high praise. We also set a record number of votes at more than 113,000 total cast. We hope you keep this publication around for a bit so that the next time you need an accountant, a new set of tires or even want to branch out and find some new great places to eat, you’ll be able to thumb through more than 100 categories and explore what Billings has to offer. This year, we’ve also added another feature to highlight businesses that do it right, and discovered a way to add more value to this product. Beginning this year, we’re listing the top two runners-up in each category. This helps readers understand the stiff competition, and also gives options. In many cases, the winners and the runners-up were separated by just a handful of votes. In fact, this was the first year we had a tie for top place — and it happened twice in the categories of chiropractor and Japanese food. That’s right: In this election year, all kinds of voting truly does matter. We hope you enjoy this publication as much as we enjoy putting it together. It’s not just a conversation about who won, this is the beginning of what is probably a lot of fierce debates about who really does have the best French Fries or donuts or burgers. And now a disclaimer before the really important part (because you should be rewarded for reading this far in the column): We usually don’t release the voting tallies. In this case, I’ll make an exception. If you think your vote doesn’t matter, think again. The margin separating the Griz from the Bobcats was less than 3. I guess that just proves that Griz fans are just more loyal...

PEOPLE Accountant Lisa Woods at Woods Accounting 1211 Grand Ave. #4

At age 39, Lisa Woods can happily say she has built a successful business. And, she admits her success did not come without additional help. First, she credits her husband, Kevin Woods, and their two young sons, as well as a great support staff and outside businesses. “I have always liked numbers, and I’ve always worked in an accounting field during any job I have held,” she said Helping clients, especially during stressful tax season, keeps Woods levelheaded and happy to assist. “I tell them, ‘we can do this,’” said Woods. Woods received her accounting education at Miles City Community College and online. She holds the status of an Enrolled Agent. She has also received additional training this year for filing individual, business or corporate tax returns, which is likely to be more stressful due to recent federal changes in the tax law. That specific training mainly came from other accounting firms operating in and training in other states. FINALISTS  Colleen Black – Colleen

OCTOBER 2018 | READERS’ CHOICE

Jessica Grunst has been a massage therapist in Billings for nearly four years since obtaining her education from a certification program offered in Costa Rica. “When I was looking through things, I was still in college and this (overseas) program popped up online. I thought it was too good to be true,” the 25-year-old therapist said. Grunst was attending college at Montana State University Billings seeking her bachelor’s degree in the physiological health and biological studies. Still, the Miles City native said that adding the four-month program in Costa Rica made sense for her. “I wanted to be a massage therapist since I was about seven. My first memory of it was after my grandfather had a stroke and was paralyzed on one side. I would massage his arm and hand to make it feel warm again. I saw him smile and thought, ‘I want to make everyone feel that happy.’” Treating between 18 and 21 patients each week, using a variety of modalities, she sees a lot of smiles from those she works with. Her favorite work is in prenatal massage. Mothers are placed on their sides throughout most of the session, and are often the most grateful for the massage at its end.

Mortgage Loan Officer DeDe Stoner at Guild Mortgage 3127 Central Ave. #4

With a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Montana State University Billings, DeDe Stoner has been in the finance industry for 24 years. Beginning as a teller and working her way up through banking institutions, Stoner takes her experience and education hand-in-hand to provide the best knowledge for her clients. Stoner’s mortgage background includes processing and underwriting. “Having the underwriting background helps. I know what they are looking for,” said Stoner Stoner invests in each client, taking their application for homeownership personally. “They are not just a file to me. They rely on me and I don’t want to let them down. I want to fulfill their expectations, their wants and needs,” Stoner said. With several buying programs already existing and developing for homebuyers, Stoner believes that there is a home loan out there for everyone. “Every homebuyer situation is unlike the one before. It takes time to find the right loan for each client. I remember when I bought my first home and having no knowledge. I want my clients to understand the process,” said Stoner. “It is so great when we get to the closing table and your clients achieve a goal they never thought they would.”

Optometrist

Robyn Clausen at Bauer and Clausen Optometry 100 Brookshire Blvd.

Dr. Robyn Clausen owns the West End optometry practice and retail eyewear store with husband Dr. David Bauer. The husband and wife team of optometrists work alongside a third optometrist, Dr. Jessica Forsch. As an experienced, highly-trained optometrist, Dr. Clausen works hand-inhand with each patient to preserve vision, reduce eye strain and fatigue, as well as diagnose and manage eye disease. All this may or may not include prescription lenses with which their retail division can help. “I love connecting with people and problem solving with each of them. The best solution for a patient’s eyes is not the same for everyone. I work with a diagnosis and educate the patient on what’s available to them. It is fun to see someone come back year after year. Seeing kids grow up, it is great that we get to do ongoing care with our patients,” Clausen said. Clausen regularly explains the different qualifications of those working with patient vision. She explains that an ophthalmologist performs eye surgery and an optician helps with eyeglasses and lenses. At her clinic, she happily refers patients to an ophthalmologist if surgery is needed. PEOPLE Portrait Photographer Tracy Moore at Tracy Moore Photographers 2702 2nd Ave. N.

As the sole owner of Tracy Moore Photographers, the young female owner is as committed to the basics of photography as she is reaching into a new division of her business that is beginning to serve more clients. “For my business, I mainly specialize on high school senior girls, and now also providing more branding images of fun, entrepreneurial woman,” said Moore. “Most of my subjects are women; I connect with my subjects by going on fun adventures, exploring. The more I hear their story, we are going to have great pictures,” Moore said.

Moore employs a studio manager and a typography assistant who have been with her for almost a decade. For the past eight years, she has been working on the niche of “branding” photography that helps a business person sell themselves with personality seldom seen in the custom headshot photograph. “These are behind the scenes photos that show personality,” Moore added. “High school senior girls are still my focus, but I’ve grown more into working with many other female

entrepreneurs. I am a female entrepreneur myself, so I want my work to also empower more women in general.” Upon realizing many high school senior girls didn’t have the clothes they wanted to wear in photos, Moore started Tracy’s Closet. The initiative to help her clients has grown into a soon-to-be 501(c)3 organization boosting high school girls’ confidence with clothes for professional portraits and everyday life. “A confident woman can take over the world, you know?” she said. Grundhauser, a former member of the U.S, Navy, opened his Billings training facility in March, 2011. “Here, we are training the function of the sport,” he said.

ZooMontana

From day one of ZooMontana’s comeback, it was clear the new focus was going to be on family fun. It would be a place to relax, enjoy time together and learn. That focus quickly became a reality with the addition of family friendly events, two new interactive playgrounds and new, rare and interesting animals. In addition, ZooMontana’s education programs continue to reach more than 25,000 kids per year both on and off grounds. Summer camps, “Boo at the Zoo” and Noon Year’s Eve, among many other events, are all designed with the littlest hearts in mind. “All of us at ZooMontana want to thank the community for voting us Best Place for Family Fun” said Jeff Ewelt, ZooMontana director. “You can be certain of one thing, as ZooMontana continues to grow and win the affection of new and seasoned families alike, the focus will always remain on kids.” FINALISTS

Billings Depot 2310 Montana Ave.

For more than 100 years, the historic depot downtown has been at the center of life for this region. Originally serving as the passenger station for the Magic City, the Depot is now well known for being the spot for weddings and special events, such as fundraisers, dinners, community celebrations and more. This is the 6th year in a row that the Billings Depot has garnered the title of “Best Place to have a Wedding” in the Billings area. The architecture, impossible-to-beat location, and pricing all contribute to make it a great option.

Celebrated by local shoppers as well as those from other states and nations, Marketplace 3301 is a buzzing family owned antique mall in downtown Billings. “With 44,000 square feet of treasure hunting and over 100 vendors, we are the largest antique mall in Montana,” said Shelly Turk. In November, Marketplace 3301 celebrates the nine-year mark since family owners Shelly, her husband, Brice Turk, and their daughter, Jennifer Turk Ingraham, launched their venture. They purchased the building several years after opening the shops that have successfully cultivated a broad local and international mass of devoted shoppers, as well as vendors who surprise the owners with new items to sell. “New or old, every piece brought in has a story to tell,” said Turk. In addition to antiques, primitives and new and used decor, shoppers find industrial, shabby chic, vintage, repurposed and painted creations, textiles, jewelry, art, dried florals, and vintage-inspired clothing. Turk said it is easy to see it all by making a full day to browse, shop and also sip at the in-house Sleepy Poet Used Book and Coffee Shoppe.

Built in 1909, the Union Depot is a gorgeous landmark that has been at the center of Billings history, hosting U.S. Presidents, princes and princesses, movie stars and other celebrities. “When brides and grooms begin their happily ever after at the Depot, their story becomes part of our story. We watch families and friends unite and leave their own mark on history,” said Depot executive director Michelle Williams. The Depot has repeatedly been rated as one of the top wedding venues in the state of Montana, and made the “Top 100 Wedding Venues in the US” list with two different national wedding blogs. The Depot’s status as a non-profit, communityowned venue has helped keep pricing low so that hundreds of couples could afford to begin their journey there. With its vaulted ceiling, Roman columns and signature arched window, the grand “Passenger Station” has an elegant feel that envelops guests. The “Baggage Room” is the larger, reception-style room. This high ceilinged space is the perfect “blank slate” that can be transformed into something unique and special for every bride’s wedding day, as well as other community celebrations. No two weddings look alike, which is part of the charm of this space.

At The Spoke Shop, owner and manager Dean Cromwell sees the future moving down the road and up the hillside with better technology and durability. Though the shop has been open since 1973, the last six years that Cromwell has been the owner have brought continuing technical changes to the industry, he said. “Everything as far as biking goes is changing,” Cromwell said, listing all types of familiar existing bicycle types, and now, pedal-assist electric bikes. “(Electric bikes) have been around, but it has really taken off recently. It’s gotten a lot of publicity in the national spotlight.” “The trend for our store is selling more full suspension mountain bikes,” he said, adding that another push will be to work with electric pedal assist bikes, which appeal to baby boomers. “They typically have discretionary income, more time, are active and staying healthy. The electric bike helps facilitate that.” The Spoke Shop intends to develop more ways to sell and service all bikes, including the popular electric bike, the owner said. FINALISTS

At Bretz RV & Marine, operations manager Dustin Bretz knows that Montana’s outdoor experiences help build multi-generational family bonds. Much of the outdoor equipment Bretz sells across the state plays a large role in that. He often quotes a saying used since 1967 by business founder Frank Bretz: “In good times and in bad, Americans love to recreate with their families.” Dustin says that today, adding, “People will forgo many things to go make time with their kids and grand, which I think is pretty special. “A lot of the folks who currently have an RV also own a boat, and we’ve been able to help them buy what they need. …We have the best selection in the state of every type of boat available,” Bretz said, including pontoon boats, wake-surf boats, runabouts, fishing boats and heavy weldedaluminum boats. Bretz also knows that the communities of enthusiastic outdoors families rely on each other for purchasing advice. “Most of our sales are referrals from previous customers. Belle en Blanc

Beautiful in white. That is the sentiment behind the name of downtown Billings’ premiere bridal boutique, Belle en Blanc. Offering a unique and special shopping experience for brides-to-be and their wedding party, Belle en Blanc offers bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, accessories and alterations—all in one location. Belle en Blanc was conceptualized in 2013 when owner Taryn Plouffe was wedding shopping with her sister and yearned for a boutique-style setting offering that “big-city” feel without extensive travel and inflated prices. In 2014, Belle en Blanc was born, and Plouffe is thrilled to be her own boss while offering a unique and special service to area women. “I have always had a passion for customer service, weddings and fashion,” she said. “This boutique allowed me to do everything I love and help women find the most important dress they will ever wear.” Truly a bridal boutique, the inventory and experience at Belle en Blanc is second to none. Appointments are strongly recommended so staff can better serve you in creating that special feeling you have been dreaming of your entire life. With regard to dress trends, this season we can expect to see gowns with dramatic backs, non-traditional colors, bohemian styles and layered skirts, Plouffe said. “Keep an eye out for convertible two-in-one gowns,” she added. Plouffe said she feels honored to be recognized as the best bridal store in Billings. “I feel blessed to have

Bumps ‘n Bundles 1027 Shiloh Crossing Blvd. Suite 5

Bumps ’n Bundles is finishing its third year in business and its second full year in the desirable West End retail hub Shiloh Crossing. “Coming to the West End is the best decision I could make for my store. Traffic is great from adjacent stores like Scheels. I can’t beat that exposure,” owner Becky Salyer said. Though the business mostly focuses on the littlest of customers by presenting clothing for newborns to children age 8, the shop does carry forward-thinking items for moms, too. “We are kind of known for having a unique style. … Our items are hand selected, what you can’t just find at any store,” said Salyer. Whether it’s for a family photo, a birthday or other special occasion, Salyer said her clothes will be “comfy.” “We have things mom likes to put on kiddos, and that are also soft and comfortable to wear.” Knowing that youngsters typically come hand-in-hand with a mom, Salyer stocks items for moms, too - maternity clothing and styles ideal for nursing mothers. “Our top category is our child clothing category. It’s what people know we have.

But they may not know we carry up to an age eight,” she said. Having four employees to assist helps Salyer’s store stay on track, while operating her own business helps her remain focused as a mother. “I get to bring my little one with me every day. I’m proud to do what I do and I have a great time talking to other moms and getting to spend time with my child,” Salyer said. FINALISTS

Emotion is elusive. But photographer Jana Graham artfully captures it between smiles, clicks of the camera, playful interaction, adoring looks between mother and child as well as a newly confident high school senior. “My favorite part of what I do is forming meaningful, personal connections with my clients,” Graham said. “It’s so fulfilling and rewarding to know that they allowed themselves to feel vulnerable in front of the camera—that they shared how they truly are as they interact with their loved ones. That is magical.” Graham, who has been in business in Billings for 14 years, offers a “boutique photographic experience” in that she customizes each session to the preferences and personality of each client. Graham’s kind and tender touch makes her a perfect choice for newborn and children’s portraits, but she

also specializes in commercial photography, graduation portraits, special occasion and wedding pictures. “Ultimately, my goal is to help them create a lasting piece of inspirational art that they can put up in their homes and feel good about every time they see it,” she said. “I want my photos to have that ‘forever’ quality.” Graham has created a program for select high school seniors, the JGP Street Team. This allows them to do community service, form friendships and be positive role models among their peers. Helping them see themselves as the amazing people they are, sometimes for the first time, and the connections they have with their loved ones is Graham’s favorite part. Seeing the looks on her clients’ faces after a big reveal from a photo session is Graham’s favorite part. “I love seeing their faces light up, especially mothers looking at photos of their children,” Graham said. “It warms my heart and makes me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than myself.” Graham thanks her loyal customers—many of them repeat clients who’ve been photographed in various phases of their lives—for her Readers’ Choice win. “Thank you so much—I feel blessed to have worked with every one of you,” she said. “It’s an honor.”

CPR Computer and Phone Repair (formerly iDoctor) 960 S 24th St. W., Suite B – West End 315 Main St. – Heights

Just because a local computer repair shop changes names and gains a national corporate affiliation, doesn’t mean the top-notch service is going to change, said one of the two computer pros that own and operate the former iDoctor. Selling and servicing all of the must-have technologies, Kyle Stricklin recently changed their name to CPR Computer and Phone Repair when they signed an agreement with a franchise network of 500 stores operating nationwide. Stricklin runs the West End store, while his brotherin-law, Kyle Nelson, operates their Heights location. “We have better service for our customers working in the franchise. Wherever our customers travel with their electronics, our service network of 500 stores is available to help. Now, we go out of our way to help our customers wherever they are,” said Kyle Stricklin. The partners are working to open additional stores in Missoula and Bozeman. Stricklin said plans for a Kalispell store are also in progress. In Billings, CPR has seven full-time employees. “People rely on their cell phones so much. We get to work with the latest, greatest technology,” Stricklin added. “That includes phones, laptops, tablets, personal computers and more.”

With an owner making savvy choices in product selection and creating appealing display space, Savvy Seconds continues to be a shopper’s choice for women’s wear. “Our popularity? It’s my selection, customer service and the displays,” said Deb Dryer, owner of the store that has been open for six years. Within the 2,000 square feet of display and sales area, Savvy Seconds offers one-stop shopping for women looking to save some money when buying clothing and associated jewelry, purses and accessories. “I have nice floor space and I make it easy to shop,” Dryer added. Her displays surround hand-painted furniture that is appealing when mixed with women’s fashions, and because the furniture is also for sale, the displays constantly change. “My mannequins are also changed each week - again always changing.” Her relationships with customers rarely change, however. “I have very open and honest relationships with my consignors and my customers. When a customer asks, ‘How does it look?’ I tell the truth. Kent’s mother, Esther, purchased the business in 1979, and his two daughters and stepson are still involved in the business today. At age 64, he can see his retirement coming and hopes his daughters will carry on with Harold’s. Since 1956, the shop has been in its Grand Avenue location, working tirelessly and meticulously on upholstery repair and replacement. Kreiter estimates that 80 percent of his business involves total recovery of furniture items, while 20 percent are repairs such as minor stitching, wood repair and replacement

With 27 years working in the heating and cooling industry, Curt White set himself up for success at an early age. The 46-year-old is president and owner of White Heating and Cooling, a company he started 20 years ago. With a staff of 33 professionals, White has built a full-service HVAC company with employees who are well-versed and experienced working with some of the best technology and name brands in the industry. White noted that his

company completes installations and repairs for furnaces and air conditioners, designs custom projects or new-construction installs. They also regularly boost indoor air quality through duct cleaning, or the addition of humidifiers and air filters. Most notable is White’s retail showroom with 40 fireplaces on display, along with other name brand products that customers can see before they purchase the installation. White enjoys working with some of the industry’s newest technology, especially new heating and cooling systems that are so much more energy efficient in the way they make every home more comfortable. Our employees are doing something right. They work at a good place and they get the right training tools to do a great job,” King said. “It’s our training, the ongoing training. We put a lot of weight into our staff knowing the products

Plus, our places are fun to work at; we have fun at all our locations.” Yes, the owner continually credits his employees, each of the 170 people on his full-time, part-time or seasonal payroll in King’s three Billings stores, and one each in Laurel and Lockwood. Ace Hardware in the Heights has a different owner. Heights Ace Hardware general manager Dan Mitchell credits the community and his store’s expert service for the Readers’ Choice win. “It’s one thing to buy the products to build a shed, it’s another to know how to do it,” Mitchell said. “We walk (customers) through a project step-by-step. We try to specialize in everything as best we can. We have to have sales associates knowledgeable in more than one department. For the past 12 years, Ashley Furniture HomeStore has also been honored by readers of The Billings Gazette as the “Best Home Furnishings Store” in Billings. When asked about winning this award for 12 straight years in such a competitive environment, general manager Travis Brownell replied, “It’s the people. On top of that, Ashley refocused its business with an expanded home accessory program and stocking program. “I just really want to thank the staff we have here. Hot Tub/ Spa Center

Montana HotSpring Spas 2217 Grand Ave.

As owner Scott Prociv said, “We’re in hot water and we love it. Yet, in those 19 years, hot tubs have gone from being a luxury item to an essential part of health.” Prociv said his business isn’t about selling items, it’s about helping customers have a more healthy, enjoyable life. In Latin, the word “spa” is defined as health by water. Scott Prociv, owner of Montana HotSpring Spas, champions this mindset, recognizing that a spa is less of a home improvement item and more of a personal improvement one. “Our motto is to ‘make every day better,’” he said, which is definitely achievable through the relaxing science of hydro-technology. Studies have shown that regular sauna use helps detoxify bodies, burn calories, increase circulation and decrease stress. As a professional, authorized dealer of HotSpring Spas and Finnleo Saunas, Montana HotSpring Spas specializes in their own analysis, delivery, customer care and installation. In 2012 the store underwent a major remodel to better serve their customers. Prociv credits his loyal, hard-working staff (who he actually dubs a “family of employees”) with much of the store’s success. It has been part of the Billings business landscape since it opened in 1977. He also wants to thank the Billings community and his following of loyal customers who’ve supported him through the years. “We’re very grateful to be able to serve you and sincerely appreciate your referrals and commitment to HotSpring Spas,” Prociv said.

meaning that if you can’t find it elsewhere, chances are you’ll find it at One Source. Patterson specializes in helping customers find ways to update their homes, find a specialty bulb or design their dream home. The most common area that needs lighting help is the kitchen. “We help customers find a way to add more or different light without having to rewire their entire house,” Patterson said. From design to electrical to installation, Patterson can help assemble a team that takes care of customers from start to finish. “We like to do the hard stuff,” Patterson said. “We like to think outside of the box. We don’t want everyone’s houses to look the same,” Patterson said. The staff is also continuously training and learning as the field of lighting switches from incandescent to CFL to LED lights, and the technology for light controls gets more advanced. Both Patterson and showroom manager Cassie Johnston are Certified Lighting Specialists, an accreditation earned through the American Lighting Association. “So often companies diversify and lose focus on what they are good at. We know lighting. Just lighting,” Patterson said. Since it opened in 2003,

After taking over the entire inventory, Cetrone and Re plan on remodeling the store. Their mantra for the shop is to make sure every woman feels fabulous in her own skin. “We honor every body type. tem technology. “The Bed Match System uses a diagnostic mattress which takes more than 1000 calculations and measurements. Based on those calculations, we can narrow down the top four or five mattresses for that particular guest,” Jay said. “This makes the selection so much easier and actually fun.” Using technology to find the best fit for an individual not only makes the process of selecting a mattress much easier, it also ensures a better night’s sleep. The process of finding the best mattress starts with excellent sleep consultants. Every potential team member undergoes a rigorous hiring process, which includes a background check and a series of interviews. “Having a very thorough hiring process is not new for us,” noted Jay. “We have followed this strict protocol for many, many years.” Mattress King has also set a gold standard for delivery service. “We call ahead and set a specific time for delivery. When our delivery staff arrives, they roll out a carpet and wear booties over their shoes to minimize tracking anything into the home. They also wear white gloves to set up your new mattress,” said Jay. From helping guests find the perfect mattress to making deliveries and every step in between, the leaders and team at Mattress King deeply scrutinize every detail to ensure guests receive the highest level of service. “We are so thankful and honored our guests have once again selected us as the best mattress store,” said Jay.

No one knows the importance of getting a good night’s sleep better than Jay and Mary Hoffmann. As owners of Mattress King, the couple along with their courteous, welltrained staff, have been helping people find the right bed for more than 32 years. And as Jay points out, the business is about much more than selling mattresses. “We are absolutely committed to offering our guests the very best products and the highest level of customer service,” he said. That commitment is embedded in the company mission statement: To change people’s lives by helping them experience the best sleep possible and make a positive difference in their lives while serving them each step of the way. According to Jay, that’s not just a saying on a plaque. “Every team member memorizes the mission, and we talk about it every week during meetings,” he said. Spacious condos with television, plush bedding, plenty of food and water bowls, and personalized attention is ideal for dogs who need a relaxation haven. Suites with private dig runs and small dog rooms also help each pet to find its happy place. The resort also offers a 1500-square-foot indoor dog park. And it’s not just for the dogs. Your feline companion can relax in a cat condo, complete with an internal air exhaust system, resting ledges and shelves, privacy panels and beds. Owners Marc and Bobbie Underwood have consistently helped pet owners with common needs and the positive feedback from community shows they are doing a great job. “We do boarding, grooming, daycare and training,” Marc said, yet acknowledges their business pleases pets as well as their owners. “It’s puppy play time, where the dogs can interact. Owners love it because their dogs come home tired. We believe it makes pets happier and more content. They get to hang out with their buddies; when they are groomed, they are no longer matted and ears are clean. They love it.”

there is a lot more to grooming than what it appears. “Groomers learn how to identify parasites. We notice changes in a pet’s coat and skin if they come in on a regular basis,” Hess said. Not only does grooming act as a preventative measure to let pet owners know if their animals should visit the vet, but it keeps our furry friends comfortable in both body and mind. When animals are dirty or have long nails, they are uncomfortable.” Being uncomfortable can add stress to pets. Hess suggests regular grooming visits to keep pets happy and healthy. Groomingdale’s offers baths, nail clipping, deshedding, ear cleaning, haircuts, and skin and coat treatment. “We have gentle PHbalanced products, leavein conditioners, dead sea mineral shampoos and pawdicures to help the entire body,” said Hess. Pets can rest on orthomats to remain at ease during their grooming. But Hess and staff realize that grooming can be stressful and tedious for pets; breaks are provided throughout the process. “The breaks make the grooming appointment last up to four hours. But it’s important to give pets, especially senior dogs and cats, those breaks,” said Hess. Being a pet owner herself, Hess knows the anxiety pet parents have when leaving their fur-babies behind. With that in mind, she and

the staff at Groomingdale’s always operate with love, empathy and attention to each pet’s needs. “It’s wonderful to be recognized for our consistent, hard work. Ellie and Jeremy Hansen opened Lovable Pets nearly 11 years ago and have been going strong serving the Billings community and their furry companions. Originally from New Jersey, Hansen frequented specialty pet stores in her home town. Once she moved to Billings and realized such stores were hard to come by, she decided to pioneer her own business tending to the health of animals. “We started out small. But now, we have two locations,” said Hansen. With the second location next to Scheels and just off the interstate, the Hansens find the location ideal for pet owners returning from camping trips, hunting expeditions or other activities that leave their pup too dirty to take directly home. With state-of-the-art, self-serve dog wash stations and a full grooming salon, pet owners can pop into either location and give their dogs or cats a warm, relaxing bath. Both stores carry specialized natural raw foods for dogs and cats, as well as

The staff is trained with extensive nutritional education to help clients find the healthiest, best choices in pet food and supplies. “We are really passionate about helping each individual animal with what they need,” Hansen said. Opening its doors to provide current Billings homeowners and future homebuyers with the best windows for each precise use, 406 Window Co. has welcomed a lot of industry changes. “Where we are trying to provide value is with the professional relationship we have built with suppliers of great products. We try to get the right product for each customer’s needs,” said Aaron Reay, shop coowner. “The new buyer wants something totally different than the buyer from years past. These buyers are more concerned with return on investment,

and are more willing to spend money up front for reliability. They want to put a good product in their home, and they are more informed. They read up on products using the internet,” said Reay. When they get to 406 Window Co, Reay and his employees begin by assessing how much the customer knows about available products and then try to match that with what is available for their specific needs. He knows that customers are familiar with finding small items online, but for large items people want to walk into a store and talk to ‘real’ person. Aaron knows about that connection firsthand, working with his father, Brian Reay. “He is one of the smartest guys on Earth. And I have

Kris Carpenter opened her then-groundbreaking business venture 20 years ago, and she said people thought ‘spa’ simply referred to a tub of bubbling hot water. The community quickly caught on and Sanctuary Spa and Salon is busier than ever. “It’s been great, and we are still alive and thriving,” Carpenter said. “We cared for just women at first, and women are still primarily our clientele — working women, moms, or any lady who wants to take care of herself.”

In Sanctuary Spa, there is a steady line of clients every day coming for massages, facials and body services. “This year we are finally adding a couple’s massage room. Our great massage team is ready for it,” Carpenter added. Another reconfiguration is complete in the front area, which serves as a Beauty Bar designed around skin services such as lash extensions. Jump in the pool, join a class or hit the weights. Staff at the Billings Family YMCA will help everyone find their fitness in a welcoming, easy-to-afford fitness center. “At the YMCA, we are a nonprofit organization. We help everyone here, regardless of their ability to pay for services. We even offer scholarships that pay up to 70 percent of the ordinary fee,” said CEO Kim Kaiser. “There is a diverse membership that comes through the doors here. We have group exercise classes all day, every day – even beginners’ fitness,” she added. With beginner programs, people can begin their journey toward health without feeling judged or embarrassed, she added. “We can get people started on the right foot in the right class,” Kaiser said. “We have thoughtful staff and a great membership that really rallies behind our beginners,” Kaiser said. Billings must be getting that message loud and clear because Kaiser tells that the YMCA has had significant membership growth in the last five to seven years and currently sits at an average membership of 15,000. Griffin and McShane can list the myriad of services, products and treatments they offer, all overseen by one dozen nurse practitioners. Some of their more popular aesthetic services include Botox facial filler, laser skin rejuvenation, chemical peels, Dermaplane and facials. As a fully licensed Medical Marijuana Dispensary, Elevated 406 works to compassionately care for its patients while following the rule of the laws delineated through Initiative 148, The Montana Medical Marijuana Act. Elevated works with a network of cannabistrained physicians who see the patient and medical records to make a referral for a ‘green card,’ which takes four to six weeks to receive. Once they hold that license, the patient can come to Elevated to purchase different forms of medical marijuana meant to provide relief. Patients come for nerve pain from accidents or illness; Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis; chronic pain; shaking and tremors; and side-effects from chemotherapy. Through recent legal expansion, the biggest difference is that providers can now bring relief to as many Montanans as possible.

Cameron Scott, owner and sole tattoo artist at Sovereign Tattoo, has been working as an industry professional for more than six years. And, he knows that his industry has changed, yet still carries some controversy. “Through the years,

tattoos always seemed to be popular with a certain demographic population, and (that population) regularly changes. I think television and social media have a lot to do with our popularity currently,” Scott said. “Usually, I work with younger female clientele. Those females 18 to 27 years old are getting more tattoos than younger males. I think the females handle the long, drawn-out pain better, too. Maybe it is kind of like a rite of passage. Guys turn 18, hey, they can smoke, go to the military and get a tattoo. Now, gals are getting the tattoo.” About nine years ago, he began to learn the technical side of tattooing on his own completing basic tattoos “underground.” Eventually he developed expert skills, and became a professional tattoo artist.

“I had to pick things up, learn as I go, never having had the opportunity to work with a mentor,” Scott said. He annually completes a training and certification course about blood borne pathogens. Being in his current location for about three years, Scott spends 60 hours a week on site, with about 35 to 40 hours weekly spent completing tattoo art. “I do a lot of super detailed stuff - it is all subjective to the client, the body part, location and skin,” he said. Another significant portion of his business is completing “cover-up” tattoos for clients who have received a now-unwanted tattoo applied by a different artist. Scott knows that the art he is covering up is what gives his business a bad name. “It’s giving me a run for my money, that’s for sure,” he said. “I am the exact opposite of what people may think. I’m a family man, never been to prison; I don’t smoke. … I am not a stereotype, I don’t work in a dark basement, smoking, drinking and tattooing all night. I aspire to be not that,” he added.

Kathy Bolin, the owner of Jake’s, enjoys hearing the good news each time her restaurant earns another Readers’ Choice award. Each division of the restaurant is responsible for this year’s award, from the

serving staff and bar, to the seafood chef and a woman who creatively masters each dessert offering. “It’s amazing that, in our 38th year, we have the public respect we have. We really do treat people the way they want to be treated,” Bolin said. The restaurant opened on New Year’s Eve, 1979. “All our tastes are created for a steakhouse – so it’s always meat and

potatoes here. Our chefs keep up on the coming trends with great specials that keep it interesting. We also have wonderful bartenders who serve great craft cocktails, all with great new recipes. We are always looking at other cities to see what is trendy elsewhere, but we will still be ‘meat and potatoes.’” In Jake’s bar, the wine list is regularly updated with input from customers.

Barbecue Blue’s BBQ 523 Hilltop Rd.

There’s nothing blue about this barbecue. Blue’s BBQ has been smoking up a storm in Billings Heights since 2004 and Readers’ Choice voters approve once again. “We offer a Texas-style barbecue — all the meats are smoked pit-style with whole logs — it’s the oldfashioned way to smoke,” said owner Kim Hager. “Plus, our sides are all homemade — potato salad; cole slaw; baked beans; ranch pasta; baked yams or garden salad — you pick.” Blue’s BBQ doesn’t veer from its traditional style either; 100 degrees or 20 below, their smoker is working hard. Kim’s favorite is white oak or hickory, but they often use fruitwoods here in Billings. Hager noted the legendary Garth Brooks once ate Blue’s BBQ when her husband catered a gig in Sheridan, Wyo. But she prefers her clients here. “We have some of the nicest, most respectful customers,” Hager noted. “They brighten our day and feel like family.” While southern style barbecue—a dry rub, with no sauce—may be not be what guests are accustomed to, co-owner Ken Hager urges folks to stop in and give them a try.

Not much is pre-made; it is prepped here and made from scratch,” Stella said. “That is how you know your food will be fresh, clean, with adequate portions.” Stella takes pride in knowing that those portions consist of Montana products as much as possible, too. “We grind our own flour and use Montana honey, choke cherries and huckleberries,” Stella added. Sales numbers are sweet to the director of operations for Billings’ Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, which sells an average of 5,000 to 6,000 glazed donuts each day at their Central Avenue bakery. “On Saturday and Sunday, that total heats up to 10,000 individual doughnuts sold,” said Jason Sansom, who is also an operating partner for the Montana franchise, which also includes Krispy Kreme locations in Missoula and Kalispell. “These donuts are amazing. But, I think it’s even more popular because of the positive service atmosphere we provide,” Sansom said. Sansom said that throughout Montana the bestseller is always their traditional glazed donut. “That is our signature,” Sansom added. “People really like it when the doughnuts are hot, so we heat up the machine and you see the glaze waterfall.” That magic happens at their stores from 6–10 a.m. and 5–8 p.m. “When the ‘HOT’ light is on outside, come inside to see. “Hot items are not available at the drive-through,

Montana Brewing Co. 113 N. Broadway

It’s noon. Where are you having lunch? The vast majority of Billings has spoken and said they’d like to spend their lunch hour dining at Billings’ historic Montana Brewing Company—or the Brew Pub, as it’s known to locals. Gourmet mac and cheese, always-delicious burgers, tasty salads and curious extras like enchilada bites and

flatbread pizza highlight the restaurant’s lunch menu. “Our menu is very diverse and unique to our restaurant,” said owner Sean Graves. “We try to be inventive, innovative and always offer superior customer service.” With lunchtime time constraints, customers can rest easy knowing they’ll get their dish in a timely manner at the Brew Pub. “We strive every day to make sure that lunch service is prompt,” Graves said. “It is a rare day when you have to wait for food at The Brew Pub.” And while the service is speedy, quality is never compromised. Burgers made-to-order, exclusions and items on-the-side are always welcomed. To their loyal following of customers, Graves would like to extend his warm thanks, and to those yet to try a bite at the Brew Pub, Graves says “you’re missing out. We do so much more than just brew beer.” Always a delightful pairing with any lunch item, patrons can come back after work to enjoy some of the craft brews that the Pub has to offer—with a plate of nachos, of course. FOOD & DRINK Micro Brewery Uberbrew

2305 Montana Ave.

Prestigious awards are foaming over for Überbrew, the Montana Avenue brewery, restaurant and taproom that had a fairly humble start. Jason Shroyer and Mark Hasting, the enterprise’s two founders, began planning the venture in 2010. “We met every Monday morning making our decisions about building the business until we opened June 18, 2012,” Shroyer said. Ken Schlencker and Jay Strever joined them later as fellow co-owners, and Hastings continues as head brewer using his previous experience working for two other Montana breweries. In addition to this year’s Billings Gazette Readers’

Choice award, Überbrew snagged four medals - two gold, a silver and a bronze out of their five beer entries at the Great American Brew Fest held in Denver during October 2016. Most notably, they were named Best Small Brewing Company of the Year and Small Brewer of the Year awards. “We cleaned house. It was a big deal because it’s kind of the Oscars for beer,” Shroyer said. Four years before those awards, the founders were still scratching their heads. “We are still in the midst of overcoming obstacles. The microbrew team environment has become so complex, that’s what makes this Readers’ Choice recognition so important for us,” Shroyer said. “We have two businesses - a restaurant and a taproom. The law only allows us to serve three pints of beer per person (per visit).” Überbrew’s sleek, brick-lined space serves the house-brewed beers, and a menu of burgers, sausages, appetizers, soups and salads. Breakfast is served on Saturday and Sunday only. They open at 11 a.m., and serve beer until 8 p.m.; the restaurant closes at 9 p.m.

Those fine things start with the menu, he said. A full wine list, signature cocktails and appetizers start the night. “For entrees, we’re known for our steaks, but we also have seafood. Customers keep coming back and voting for Jake’s in different Readers’ Choice categories each year. “That’s a difficult task to do,” Berube said. “Our great employees keep the customers coming back.” Those employees have seen countless couples become engaged at Jake’s, sometimes with a bit of staff assistance. “Many times, the man calls beforehand. We set candles and flowers. But, in typical guy fashion, (some) wait ‘til they get here, say he has go to the bathroom and try to put a plan together with staff right on the spot,” Berube said.

The Windmill Restaurant / Bar 51 3429 Transtech Way

Long a premier steak and seafood supper club, The Windmill Restaurant / Bar 51 recently made some changes to their décor, but that only enhanced how their loyal customers and new visitors can enjoy fresh seafood in the middle of The Treasure State, said general manager Julie Roma. “Remodeling brought a different look; a casual, rustic side, and the bar now has an open concept that make people feel more casual, more laid-back,” Roma added. Their kitchen manager, Elias Banderas, has been with The Windmill for 10 years. “He has really turned it around. His staff likes it here and the customers love what he has done, bring-

Each week he creates the menu specials with those shipments. In Bar 51, Roma touts their signature cocktails, which change every six months, pair well with seafood, and always use fresh seasonal fruit for garnishing. “They treat their wine selection just as gently,” Roma said, “even allowing the public to sip and determine what’s added to their wine list.”

The Readers’ Choice honor for best wings goes to the West End establishment that has the word “wings” in its name: Buffalo Wild Wings.

FOOD & DRINK “We’ve got everything from chicken wraps to chicken flatbread. And of course, the chicken wings and everything in between,” said Buffalo Wild Wings director of marketing David Moorehead.

“For sports fans, we continue to be the best. When guests walk in, the atmosphere speaks for itself, especially since our remodel; it looks like being in a stadium,” said Moorhead, who has been in his position for more than

four years. He said that their 2015 remodel carried the stadium design to their newly created three-season patio by adding garage doors around their existing outdoor seating space. “Overall, the remodel lets us continue to serve fan

favorites,” he said, listing their fried pickles, chili queso dip and their house sampler as best sellers. For meals, he said the Cheese Curd Bacon Burger and Buffalo Bleu Burger remain top options. “Since we opened in

2005, the owner put forth the effort to be a family sports restaurant, not a sports bar,” Morehead added. Their menu reflects options for guests of all ages. Due to customer requests, their bar that has

We don’t campaign for your Readers Choice vote, so we’re always happily surprised when we win.

It must be the ice cream! We’ve been giving our customers free ice cream in the summer for many years, and we know they like it because they talk about it so much. But we know there are other things our customers like also… • They like to be treated with respect and dignity. We say we are “Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen” and we want every customer, when they leave our store, to leave feeling they had been treated honestly and honorably. • They like us to have their favorite brand of motor oil. That is why you see 125 different oils available in each of our stores. Oil companies don’t like that, but we explained that we don’t work for oil companies; we work for our customers. • They do not like us to “hawk” things on them. Throughout the history of the lube center industry the biggest complaint that people have had is the tendency of companies – usually in big cities – to try to sell them extra services that they often don’t even need. We don’t do that. We recommend, we remind, we offer, but we never sell. We judge our success by how soon you come back, not by how much you buy. Providing our customers what they want does not happen by accident. We work hard at it, and we train hard also. We take this award as a sign that we are doing a pretty good job!
