What is Partners in Education? Partners in Education is a community-wide partnership between schools, businesses, and community members dedicated to ensuring the success of all K-12 students and schools in the Billings area. Partners in Education is a program of the Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools.

What is the goal of Partners in Education? The goal of Partners in Education is to build mutually benefiting partnerships between schools and businesses that result in school improvement, teaching excellence, student achievement, and appreciation of common community goals.

What kinds of partnerships are there? There are many ways that organizations and businesses can participate in a partnership with the schools in Billings. Each partnership is unique, depending upon the capacity of the business and the needs of the school. Example activities include:  Tutoring or mentoring students

 Providing incentives for students and faculty  Speaking at a Career Day or other classroom event  Donating in-kind services, materials, or equipment  Volunteering as contest judges, field trip chaperones, or pen pals

What are the benefits of a partnership? Many schools get additional support through the partnerships such as tutors, mentors, and extracurricular activities for students. Students also get the chance to meet adult mentors in the community and learn about career choices. Likewise, many employees enjoy the opportunity to do something positive for the community and to be given time by their employer to do so. Businesses also benefit from the positive image of giving back to the Billings community.

How do I start a partnership at my school or business? To learn more about starting a partnership at your school or business, please contact Krista Hertz, at (406) 245-4133 or by email at hertzk@billingsschools.org.

here are plenty of opportunities for intergenerational engagement between residents of St. John’s/ Mission Ridge and Arrowhead Elementary students. This partnership linking older adults with elementary students not only provides kids with academic and social support but also gives older volunteers a positive perception of how they help the next generation. This year Arrowhead 4th graders performed a Veteran’s Day music program for the Mission Ridge residents, a third grade class shared a scavenger hunt with the residents, and 5th graders participated in after school service projects at Mission Ridge. In a unique project made possible by the generational difference between the partners, first graders conducted personal interviews with the residents on the 100th Day of School. The students asked questions such as “Where did you grow up”, “Did you have television and telephones?” According to Vista resident Bonnie Troutt, “the look and expressions on their faces after hearing our answers are unforgettable!” These interviews not only provided an opportunity for the seniors to share oral history but also gave the students an experience in which they learned historical perspectives that don’t often appear in books. enriches the lives of both the students and residents. The students are better readers because of the reading support they receive from the resident volunteers on a weekly basis. Second grader Rylee summed up the experience, “It is fun to read with Miss Dorothy because she helps me with words and makes things interesting.” Far from just a heartwarming partnership of more than 10 years, by utilizing the talents of older adults, we make our world a better place. The benefits of inter-generational relationships flow both ways.

reat things are happening at Orchard Elementary due to the support of Phillips 66 volunteers. The staff, students, and community deeply value the support and commitment of the Phillips 66 employee volunteers. “On a daily basis, our students are seeing positive adult role models that care about them, know them by name, and know their story,” shared principal, Jeremy Carlson. With a focus on improving attendance for the 2016-17 school year, Mr. Carlson turned to Phillips 66 for assistance with the attendance incentive contest to coincide with National STEM Day. During the week long contest, school wide attendance increased by

5%. This included not just getting to school, but getting to school on time. Mr. Carlson was so impressed by this increase that they “decided, as a school, to make attendance incentives a regular thing each week.” Phillips 66 employees were on board to offer support. The volunteers provided STEM related activities, books, and prizes for the winning classrooms. A winning kindergarten class made slime and participated in a whole class science experiment. A fourth grade class learned about refining, using icecream and candy. “These attendance incentives may seem small, but great things are happening at Orchard with Phillips 66’s support. We are setting students and families up for success by establishing

the foundations that will lead to consistent attendance habits and strong academic gains in the classroom,” shared Mr. Carlson. In addition to participating in this special program, Phillips 66 employees provide weekly classroom support through reading and math tutoring, financial support through their employee matching gift program, and backpacks, clothing and school supplies for families in need. Phillips 66 environmental specialist, Ashley Thorson, shared, “At Phillips 66, supporting our people, our environment, and our communities guides everything we do and it always will.” Phillips 66 volunteers are making a lasting impact on the students at Orchard Elementary.

First Interstate Bank and Washington Elementary

F

irst Interstate Bank and the staff at Washington Elementary are raising student awareness of the diverse career opportunities available in our community. The Career Awareness Program for 5th graders was launched this fall through a collaborative effort between the partners. The inaugural day took students on a field trip to First Interstate Bank. At the bank, the fi fth graders rotated between stations where they learned fi rst-hand the many facets of the internal workings of a bank branch. A second career awareness excursion exposed the students to Whitewood Transportation, a commercial customer of First Interstate Bank. The students toured the transportation facility and learned about careers in the transportation industry. Principal DeeDee Larsen is excited about the opportunities this program is providing for her students. “Exposure to our community and all it has to offer will hopefully spark hope

and a positive connection for our students. It is our goal that our kids will intrinsically value their education and discover interest in our community and strive to fi nd something they are passionate about.” It’s not just the elementary students who benefit from this school partnership. According to Tyler Crennen of First Interstate Bank, the partnership provides a rewarding opportunity for First Interstate Bank employees to volunteer and make a difference in the lives of Washington Elementary students. “It’s all about the kids. Opportunities like this allow First Interstate Bank and its employees and partners to fulfi ll one of our core values of being committed to the communities we serve.” The commitment of First Interstate Bank to Washington Elementary goes beyond the Career Awareness Program. Employees volunteer on a weekly basis working with students who need a little extra 1 to 1 time practicing skills. They

also provide volunteer and fi nancial assistance at special events and during the holidays. Through First Interstate Bank’s involvement in the Partners in Education program, Washington Elementary students are learning that the community cares about their education and academic success, as well as their success as adults.

Billings Career Center EMT and Medical Careers Program

O

ne of the greatest challenges facing our community and state is the growing gap between the number of jobs in the healthcare profession and the qualified workers to perform them. Community businesses and the Career Center EMT and Medical Careers program have partnered to address this issue. They share a common goal - to prepare a highly skilled workforce of next generation healthcare professionals in order to meet this growing need. Many local healthcare providers and businesses are successfully collaborating with the Career Center program to provide exceptional opportunities for students to get a jump start on careers in health, medicine, and biosciences. On average, 30 to 40 students participate each year in this invaluable program. Students in the program offer testimony about how their participation in the program has helped sharpen both their current academic focus and their visions for the future. “Med Careers has completely changed my outlook on my future. It was super refreshing to get out in the community once a week, getting to learn completely hands on. Having the opportunity to see all of the medical jobs in action gave me the confidence to be sure that nursing is exactly the field that I want to pursue,” shared Shae Helterbran, a West High senior who has been accepted into the nursing program at Carroll College next year. The following healthcare providers and businesses are leveraging their combined knowledge and skills to provide the Career Center EMT/Med Career students with meaningful opportunities to develop the necessary skill set for success in the workforce. presentations. Our employees are amazed by the level to which educators and students have taken STEM education to in such a short time. The investment in STEM education is making a targeted difference in our community. We are on the right path to prepare our students for jobs in our community,” shared Ryan Wegner, Phillips66. We hear from teachers who tell us of engaged students, improved behavior, fewer absences on Project Lead The Way days, and increased cooperation among students. They see students recognize that each problem has more than one way to solve it. As students work in teams, they learn to thoroughly explore why something is or is not working. This takes patience, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, perseverance, and creativity.

Teachers, principals, and parents see students developing these skills. This program levels the playing field for our children where an academically struggling student can encourage a gifted student and where coming to school is so interesting that a young student can’t wait to get to school. “I am amazed by what is happening in our community’s classrooms and the level of engagement by students and their excitement for learning,” shared Dr. Bob Wilmouth, Rocky Mountain College. “Project Lead The Way curriculum allows our children to ignite their curiosity, think creatively, and learn to collaborate in order to solve problems.” Our Partners in Education have made a tremendous impact in supporting Project Lead the Way in our schools through

volunteerism, advocacy, and financial support. Project Lead the Way volunteers can be seen helping assemble robots, engineering beanstalks, and leading students in discussions about careers. Our Project Lead the Way supporters provide additional resources to our schools by serving as mentors and liaisons to real-world applications of what students are learning in class. “It is a rare and truly humbling philanthropic opportunity that arises – when values, passions, personal relationships align so perfectly. Our educational philosophy embraces STEM and active, collaborative learning and Project Lead the Way means these ideals will directly benefit a school and students that so many of us know personally and care so much about,” shared Jim Beal, Principal, CTA Architects Engineers. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The high school class that has been most chal-

lenging, but also the most rewarding, is AP Calculus. The homework assignments are long and the tests are hard, but it feels amazing when I do well on those things. The concepts have been really challenging and it is super rewarding when I feel like I have mastered on of them. TEACHER: My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Bryce, made a very positive impact on my educa-

tion. She taught me the importance of good study habits and compelled me to memorize my multiplication tables. She instilled in me a strong desire to always complete a task to the best of my ability by following the directions. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Senior Advocates, Diversity Dance, School of Classical Ballet, cheerleading, Student Council, National Honor Society

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: My high school class that has been the most challenging and rewarding is my honors English class because it taught me that I cannot slack off, and that I need to put forth all my effort into everything I do.

TEACHER: The teacher that has made the greatest impact on me was my sophomore English teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Fleek Airne because her class was where I learned not to procrastinate. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Track and Field

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The high school class that has been the most challenging for me is calculus. We learn something new almost every day, and most of it is very challenging and hard to keep up with. However, it has also been rewarding for me because it has taught me problem solving skills and patience, which will help me with many things in my life going forward.

TEACHER: The teacher who has made the greatest positive impact on my education is Mr. Dan Bartsch, because he is always there to help me in any way I need, and he taught human anatomy in such a great way that helped me decide that I want a career in medicine. My ultimate goal is to become a pharmacist in a specialized hospital setting.

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: My most challenging and rewarding class has been Honors Pre-Calculus. I have always loved math and the challenge that it presents. It was from this class that I learned how far hard work and dedication can take you on the path towards success. TEACHER: My favorite teacher was Mrs. Amy Pfeifle. She taught me Honors Pre-Calculus

and made a huge impact on my education. Her passion for math and teaching style really spoke to me. She is wildly dedicated to helping her students succeed is the reason that I love math. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Volleyball, MT Juniors Club Volleyball, National Honor Society, Key Club, Senior Advocates, STEM Society, Youth Group, Pep Band, piano

lus reminded me why math has always been my favorite subject. MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: I love learning and have always sought out academic challenges that help me grow as an intellectual. The Platinum Program for me was a natural extension of my passion for learning. It also allowed me to create a Magnum Opus project about a subject that interested me – something that I never would have done without the Program. MAGNUM OPUS: For my Magnum Opus, I designed and built an electric cello. With guidance from my community mentor, Barry Beringer, I cut, glued, shaped, and sanded

wood to create a beautiful instrument. The most challenging aspects of the project were learning how to use power tools and paying attention to minute details. TEACHER: My first grade teacher, Mrs. Cheryl Klunder, made the greatest impact on my education. She saw my potential and started having me go to second grade classes, which let to me skipping a grade. I’m grateful to have been able to take drafting because I have gained a good work ethic and a knowledge of software that will make college just a little bit easier. MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: I was already on track to take all of the honors and AP classes offered at Senior, and I chose an interesting project. I was definitely excited to get started on it, since I never would have decided to write a book otherwise. MAGNUM OPUS: My Magnum Opus is writing

and publishing a fiction novel. I decided to do this because I wanted to be creative writer in sixth grade, and this project makes my old dream a reality. TEACHER: Mrs. Tubbs was my third grade teacher at Travis, and she is the reason I love math. It all started with an innocent math competition, and then I got first place. She had always pushed me to do my best in class, and she had shown me that hard work does indeed pay off. I probably wouldn’t be where I am today without that solid foundation. It was challenging because we had a very difficult test every week. On the bright side, these weekly exams, including an essay every other week, greatly improved my ability to retain previously learned material as well as my essay writing skills.

TEACHER: My fifth grade teacher, Mr. Carl Stachan, made a huge impact on my education. Expanding my horizons and pursuing a lifelong dream were both goals that I had for my project. MAGNUM OPUS: I began learning to play the cello in the summer of 2015 after never having any previous instrumental

experience. After a year and a half of practice, I joined a community orchestra and performed as a member in their spring concert. TEACHER: During my twelve years in school, Ms. Sarah Lord has made the greatest impact on my education. While taking her environmental science class, she shared with me a passion for nature and supported me in a way that makes me confident going into college knowing that I have mentors like her to be grateful for. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Academic Team, Environmental Club, Interact Club, STEM Society, cross country, tennis

challenging and rewarding class of my high school career. Honors Chemistry was challenging, because almost all of it was new, interesting and, different from other classes I’ve taken. Chemistry helped my work ethics, prepared me for what college classes will be, and taught me useful methods of work. TEACHER: Mr. Sean Joyce has made the greatest positive impact on my K-12 education. He has been my teacher twice:

once as my Honors Algebra 2 teacher and again this year as my AP Calculus teacher. Mr. Joyce has been a great teacher and I love his way of teaching. He explains how things work in math in terms that his students understand. SKYVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Michael Carroll PARENTS: Andy and Becky Carroll MIDDLE SCHOOL: Castle Rock Middle School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Independent Elementary School FUTURE PLANS: I plan on majoring in accounting and getting a CPA, attending either University of Wyoming or Montana State University.

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The class I feel has been most challenging has been my Honors Physics course. The class is taught by my academic team coach, and he has gone above and beyond to ensure that his students comprehend the material he teaches. This has been challenging, and I’ve had to work hard at it. TEACHER: The teacher who has most greatly influenced my K-12 education has been my physics teacher, Mr. Rich

McFate. During the five years I have known him, Mr. McFate has worked hard both to challenge me intellectually and ensure that I can succeed in the classes I participate in. he has helped me to better understand every part of the world around me. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Academic Team, Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, National Business Honor Society, Speech and Debate

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: My most rewarding class in high school has been chemistry. I was taught an astounding amount of content, and learned how to work in tandem with my classmates. I was also taught how to supple-

ment my learning on my own. TEACHER: Mr. Erick Meyer, Skyview English teacher EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, choir, soccer

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: My Spanish classes have been both the most challenging and the most rewarding. I feel that learning another language opens many doors later in life and I’m glad that I’ve had this opportunity. the best out of myself, and his constant support both in the class and in extracurricular activities has helped me shape who I am. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Speech and Debate, Business Professionals of America, Heights National Little League Baseball, band, cross country

SKYVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Nicole Guenthner PARENTS: Kevin and Carolyn Guenthner MIDDLE SCHOOL: Castle Rock Middle School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Eagle Cliffs Elementary School FUTURE PLANS: I will be attending Washington University in Saint Louis next fall to study Cognitive Neuroscience. I plan on obtaining either a PhD or an MD in the future. With either of these, I hope to become a medical researcher and potentially do some physician work as well. I would love a career that allows me to make a positive difference in the

community. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: It is very hard to call any single course more challenging than another. That being said, my Spanish courses have been particularly memorable. The methods of thinking and learning necessary to learn a language are so much different than anything else, but the stress is beyond worth it to take that step towards connecting with another culture. TEACHER: Over the years, I have had so many amazing teachers who have supported my endeavors, and I wish I could

name them all to thank them for their contribution! Mrs. Marilyn Anderson, my high school counselor, has been especially helpful ever since my freshman year. Her patience and efforts toward ensuring my future success are very much appreciated! EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Volunteer at Billings Clinic, Moss Mansion, Yellowstone Soccer Association and Edge Soccer Academy; Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, Student Council, debate, soccer, National Business Honor Society

and rewarding class. It is very difficult to learn a new language, but is also very interesting. I learned more about different cultures as well as more about America. Knowing another language will also be an asset to me in the future. TEACHER: Mrs. Goodheart, my fourth grade teacher, made a positive impact on my education. I was in a third and fourth grade combo class. Mrs. Goodheart

helped me improve my academic skills, especially math. She helped me grow as a leader by giving me opportunities to help the third graders in my class. She is one of the reasons why I succeeded in school. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: volleyball, basketball, softball, Youth Leadership Billings, Peer Performance Student Advisory Team, National Honors Society, Business Professionals of America

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: I believe my most challenging high school class has been my senior year Physics course. It has been difficult for me because physics challenges the way your brain is accustomed to thinking. TEACHER: The teacher who made the greatest positive impact on my education is my Spanish teacher, Mr. Rafael Zepeda. He really cared about helping me learn

a new language which has already been beneficial to me. He also was genuinely interested in what was going on with me every day, and I consider him one of my best teachers. SKYVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Katie Hooton PARENTS: Jane and Jerry Hooton MIDDLE SCHOOL: Castle Rock Middle School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Alkali Creek Elementary FUTURE PLANS: I plan to attend school at Brigham Young University-Idaho beginning in the fall. While there I intend to major in accounting. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: Spanish was my most difficult class.

Learning another language requires access to a part of the brain that is rarely used. This subject pushed me more than any other class. Studying Spanish requires more than a minimum effort to succeed. I was incredibly fortunate to have teachers who were patient and knowledgeable in assisting me with this class. TEACHER: My health teacher, Mr. Kas Ioane, is an amazing person. He taught me the importance of a positive attitude,

hard work, and being true to myself. Mr. Ioane was equally interested in how I performed in debate as I did in tennis, and he thought I could achieve any goal I set in either activity. Because he believed in me so much, I believe in myself. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Student Council, National Honor Society, National Business Honor Society, Montana Girls State, speech and debate, tennis, church youth group

been both my most challenging and rewarding one because although the subject matter was extremely difficult at times, Mr. Michels’ rigorous approach to teaching helped me develop good study habits that I know I’ll use in the future. TEACHER: My fifth and sixth grade teacher Mr. Karson Kidgell made the greatest positive impact on me because he was the first teacher to show me the value to

kindness, respect, and doing good honest work. He was an overall phenomenal teacher. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: The most prominent extracurricular activities I have been involved with include student council, jazz band, pep band, soccer, National Honor Society, and Montana Hunter Education

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: Honors Chemistry was the most rewarding because Mr. Michels expected a lot from his students and challenged us daily to be better. TEACHER: Mr. Michels has made the greatest impact on me. He taught me that hard work and dedication pay off.

SKYVIEW HIGH SCHOOL Colton Wald PARENTS: Zac and Anne Wald MIDDLE SCHOOL: Castle Rock Middle School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Alkali Creek Elementary FUTURE PLANS: After high school, I plan to attend Montana State University in Bozeman and pursue a degree in chemical engineering. After earning my degree, I hope to find a job and gain a variety of experience. I would like to travel some. I hope to keep living in Montana though,

in the state where I’ve grown up and that I love. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The most challenging yet rewarding high school class that I have taken would probably be honors chemistry. The class was rigorous and there were some projects and assignments that were very long and difficult. However, Mr. Michels is a great teacher and he taught me not only chemistry, but problem solving and the value of working knowledge. TEACHER: Mrs. Jenny Barkac was my first

grade teacher at Alkali Creek Elementary and she has probably made the largest positive impact on my K-12 education. She encouraged me to think in my own way and it was because of her that I ended up in the extended studies program that allowed me to learn outside the regular curriculum and spark my desire to learn. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: FCCLA, Academic Team, Key Club, Drama Club, ExxonMobil CAP, Boy Scouts of America, band and pep band

for the United States Government. Eventually, I would like to work for the FBI. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: I think the most challenging class that I have ever taken was AP Calculus because it is unlike any other math class that I’ve taken. It really teaches you a new way of thinking and puts your knowledge to the test. Also, it gives you a whole new aspect to looking at mathematics. TEACHER: One teacher that has made the greatest positive impact on my education was Mrs. Molly Barta. She was my

accounting teacher and also one of my Business Professionals of America advisors. She made me realize that the accounting field is something I want to pursue in the future. I cannot thank her enough for the support and encouragement she has provided me. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Business Professionals of America, Key Club, All Naturals, Skylights, Academic Team, National Honor Society, National Business Honor Society, St. Vincent Student Volunteer, softball, and Montana Girls State

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The class that has been the most challenging has been Honors Physics. It has forced me to look at problems in a way different than how I’ve been taught to look at them before. It is also the class that has made me think and try the hardest. TEACHER: The teacher who has had the greatest impact on my education

has been Mrs. Amy Logan. She always believes in the best in people and never gives up on them. She is always there to lend a helping hand. She has an amazing impact on all around her. Her example is what has encouraged me to go into teaching because I want to have that impact on others. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: musicals, choirs, youth groups

WEST HIGH SCHOOL Katherine Alme PARENTS: Kurt and Sandra Alme MIDDLE SCHOOL: Will James Middle School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Arrowhead Elementary FUTURE PLANS: I plan to attend college and major in chemistry or biology. Then, I hope to attend medical school to become a pediatrician. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The class that was the most challeng-

ing and rewarding for me was AP U.S. History. In this class, I not only learned about history, but I also learned how to analyze and argue different perspectives. Dr. Wendt pushed me to realize the importance of thinking critically, which is a skill that can be applied in all aspects of my life. TEACHER: I have had so many great teachers throughout my education that

it would be impossible for me to choose just one. I greatly appreciate how each one of my teachers pushed me and challenged me in different ways. I would not be the student or person I am today without them. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Diversity Dance, School of Classical Ballet, Family Promise of Yellowstone Valley Board of Directors, National Honor Society

warding class for me because it required me to apply math that I learned previous years to solve real world problems. Physics has forced me to look at the world in a more mathematical manner that has been both difficult and rewarding. TEACHER: Mr. Qualls was my Honors Geometry teacher in high school. His love for math and teaching made learning more exciting for me. He inspired me to

work towards a career that required an ability to solve complex problems. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: golf, basketball, West High mentor, National Honor Society

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: The high school class that has been the most challenging for me would be Honors English my freshman year. However, that class prepared me very well for Honors and AP English my sophomore, junior, and senior years, and now I enjoy English so much I am considering majoring in it. TEACHER: Almost all of my teachers have made a positive impact on my education,

so it is really hard for me to pick just one. Mrs. Kari Field, my chemistry teacher junior year, really encouraged me and helped me to understand the importance of being spectacular not just in academics but as a person. WEST HIGH SCHOOL Kristi Eby PARENTS: Kelly and Wendy Eby Middle School: Trinity Lutheran School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Trinity Lutheran School FUTURE PLANS: I will be attending Montana State University Bozeman. I will be going in undecided. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: I think the most challenging and rewarding classes I have taken would be French.

I have taken it for all four years and Madame Schuman has become one of my favorite teachers. It has been a great and challenging experience to try to learn another language and it has also given me insight into how another country’s culture differs from the United States. TEACHER: I think my music teacher, Mrs. Speed in elementary and middle school has had the biggest impact on me. She

encouraged me to be in band in fifth grade and try the clarinet. Because of this, I continued to take band in high school and I have had the best time being involved in music with many fun opportunities. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: pep band, National Honor Society

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: I believe the most rewarding class to me was Mrs. Ladd’s Honors Physics 1. I learned so much in that class and it taught me the value of hard work. It required a lot of work from keeping my binder organized to turning in my homework on time. Mrs. Ladd treats you like a responsible adult, which taught me responsibility.

TEACHER: My eighth grade science teacher Mr. Kenney is the one that got me interested in science in the first place. He was teaching us to balance chemical equations and I got the subject right off the bat. Later, when I took chemistry I knew that this was the subject for me. MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: For me, the most rewarding classes were

honors and AP classes because they pushed me to work hard and challenge myself. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be Honors Chemistry. The atmosphere was positive every day and I was excited to come to class and learn something new. TEACHER: The teacher who has had the

greatest impact on my education would be Mrs. Nicole Bogunovich, my business teacher, because she introduced me to the field I am planning to pursue in college. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Business Professionals of America, National Honor Society, piano

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: I found AP US History most rewarding because of how my teacher Dr. Wendt taught me and my fellow students to apply the skills we learned in class to learning outside of the classroom. As a result, I was inspired to complete an independent study in which I learned invaluable lessons that I will cherish forever.

TEACHER: Dr. Bruce Wendt had the greatest positive impact on me. He gave me the opportunity to extend my education beyond the classroom and once I did so I learned invaluable lessons that I will never forget. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: tennis, speech and debate, Amnesty International, pep band

MOST CHALLENGING OR REWARDING CLASS: I have two. AP Environmental Science, taught by Dr. Wines and Western Civilization taught by Shane Fairbanks. Dr. Wines brings a phd and a college level curriculum to a high school class, and Mr. Fairbanks not only teaches an extremely fascinating subject, but he brings a passion to his job that inspires me every single day. TEACHER: Mr. Jim Stanton was my middle school principal, and he has had the

PLATINUM STUDENTS The Platinum Program at Billings Senior High was designed to provide students with an opportunity to engage in demanding high school coursework, as well as complete a Magnum Opus project. This program cultivates curious, independent and collaborative students and prepares them for successful college completion. Platinum students are required to take every honors and AP course offered at Senior High. They are also required to complete a Magnum Opus or capstone project during their junior and senior years, while still completing the rigorous coursework that honors and AP classes demand. The Magnum Opus reflects the students’ passions and solidifies their commitment to learning and the application of learning.

Cierra Coppock PARENTS: Dave and Renee Coppock MIDDLE SCHOOL: Lewis and Clark Middle School ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: Highland Elementary FUTURE PLANS: I will attend Western Washington University and study Art Therapy.

TEACHER: Mr. Jamie Jarvis, my seventh grade geography teacher, had a tremendous impact on my education. He taught me the value of learning and showed me why I should be passionate about education. Mr. Jarvis inspired me to share my love for art with everyone around me, while also trying to make a difference in the community.

MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: I wanted to challenge my intellectual abilities. Plus, I knew it would prepare me for college. MAGNUM OPUS: The impact of art on society.

the most is Mr. Dan Bartsch, my human anatomy and AP biology teacher. Every day he makes me want to learn more and soak up everything about the subject. He has really inspired me to major in biology in college. MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: I like challenge in school, and I knew that this would be a good place to start. These are rigorous courses that are offered at Senior High and I imagined being recognized at graduation as “Caroline

Dimich graduating with high honors and platinum program.” That made me keep pushing through the hard parts of school, especially junior year. MAGNUM OPUS: I have always loved music, so I did something that was music oriented. I took one of my favorite piano pieces “Canon in D Major” by Johann Pachelbel and arranged a new piano piece. I then took that piano piece and created a quintet arrangement that my friends and I could perform.

school. I have not decided which college I will be attending. TEACHER: Mrs. Amy Pfeifle, because she taught me to love math again. MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: I participated in the Platinum Program because I didn’t want my high school career to be something I did and never thought

about again. I wanted to do something important that could make a difference. MAGNUM OPUS: I started a STEM (science technology, engineering, and math) Society at Lewis and Clark Middle School in order to encourage girls in STEM subjects at a time when they start to lose interest. Boys are welcome, too!

TEACHER: Mr. Eddie Cochran who was

a basketball coach of mine from 6-7th grade and beyond being an amazing role model, Eddie represents a man down to earth that encourages hard work and commitment to any and everything you do. MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: In total honesty I didn’t have an option not to, my mother highly encouraged (forced)

my participation. That being said, it has been a great opportunity to be a part of especially since education in our society is not something that is normally highlighted. MAGNUM OPUS: The topic of my Magnum Opus is creating a survey that questions teens about political issues in our society.

creative writing projects. TEACHER: Mrs. Darla Williams was my extended studies teacher in elementary school. She taught us endless lessons about the flexibility of intelligence. Each year she stretched my ability to learn by allowing us to think independently and explore. With Mrs. Williams, no answer was wrong or right. We thought differently in that class and I will never forget it. MOTIVATION FOR PLATINUM PROGRAM: The opportunity to be rewarded for hard work stood out to me as a freshman. I

was motivated to keep up my work in order to also participate in the Magnum Opus project. I could choose whatever area of focus I wanted, but it would still carry the same priority as any school work. MAGNUM OPUS: I chose to explore my interests in English, particularly writing short stories. I read and learned from diverse authors, delved into various genres and styles, and ultimately found that I enjoy most writing abstract fantasy called slip-stream.
