Montana’s largest shopping, sports and entertainment destination offers a one-of-a-kind customer experience in a spectacular setting. Steve D. Scheel, Chairman and CEO of Scheels, knows a great opportunity when he sees one. As the Chairman and CEO of Scheels, he is at the helm of 24 highly successful stores in 10 different states – one of which is in Billings. “We love Billings,” Scheel said. “This has been a great market for us, and with everything going on in Billings we’re confident the new store will be absolutely outstanding.” The new retail destination, located at 1121 Shiloh Crossing Blvd., takes Scheels’ successful store model to a completely different echelon. “This is more than shopping – it’s a place for families to come and be entertained, learn about new products from experts and have fun,” Scheel said.

Humble beginnings

24th St. West, and the inventory was expanded to include a large selection of sporting goods. In 1999, Scheels moved into a newly-constructed, 40,000-square-foot space in Rimrock Mall. For well over a decade the mall location offered ample space to display a large selection of sporting goods, apparel and accessories. Yet the Billings market was changing – and Steve Scheel saw opportunity. “Billings is the Fargo of Montana, with oil and gas, finance, farming and ranching, health care – the economy is strong and diversified, and the city is growing, it just made sense to open a destination retail center here,” Scheel said. That conclusion led to the development of the Scheels megastore which was timed to open at the end of the current mall lease.

Elegant glass bubble chandeliers, stylish display cases and luxe seating arrangements evoke a sophisticated, yet inviting aesthetic. “The women’s dressing rooms are first class, and there’s a full-time attendant plus a seamstress on staff who can help you find the right fit and style,” Pearson said. When people need to take a break, they can head into Gramma Ginna’s Restaurant. The menu includes a delicious, freshly-made selection of sandwiches, soups and grilled items along with Scheels Fudge Shop and a Starbucks.

Going up… Similar to the first floor, the second floor is also segmented into a variety of shops and experiences. Running the full length of one side is the firearms shop featuring an extensive selection of guns and ammo, with a separate room housing modern sporting rifles (MSRs). Adjacent to the firearm shop is the archery store plus a huge display of hunting accessories, apparel, footwear and more. “There are numerous fullbody and shoulder mounts throughout the area, plus our Wildlife Mountain that features an amazing display of mounts in their natural surroundings,” said Pearson. Past the hunting section,

Scheels: Success rooted in History Three acres of potatoes were the seed for the first Scheels store in 1902. Frederick A. Scheel, a German immigrant, used the $300 he earned from that harvest of potatoes as the down payment on the first Scheels, a small hardware and general merchandise store in Sabin, Minn. Over the years, Scheels opened stores in surrounding communities, including Fargo, N.D., where the Corporate Office and one of the largest All Sports Stores in the world are now located. The RenoSparks Scheels in Nevada became the world’s largest All Sports Store in September 2008. Firmly planted in the hardware business, Scheels started adding a small selection of sporting goods to their stores in 1954. As customer interest grew, more sports lines were added with athletic shoes and clothing be-

ing introduced in the Scheels’ product mix in 1972. Scheels’ first All Sports Superstore opened in Grand Forks, N.D. in 1989. Today, Scheels is a 24-store operation with stores in 10 states including North Dakota, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Nevada, and Utah. Providing Scheels’ customers with first-class customer service and the world’s largest selection of sports, sportswear and footwear are the priorities throughout the organization. Currently, Steve D. Scheel, the great grandson of Frederick A. Scheel, is the Scheels Chairman and CEO and oversees the company of over 5,000 associates. His son, Steve M. Scheel, is the company’s president and has been working for Scheels since 1989. Community Involvement Key Partner Scheels is proud that our associates are outstanding contributors to the United Way, and through several initiatives per year, our employees give back to the communities we are located in and strive to make a difference. United Way is a national network of nearly 1,300 local organizations that work to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. Along with the United Way, Scheels associates recognize that the building blocks for a good life are a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. Local United Ways create long-lasting community change by addressing the underlying causes of the most significant local issues. Common focus areas include helping children and youth achieve their potential, promoting financial stability and independence, and improving people’s health. The goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing the underlying causes of problems.

Community Outreach and Volunteerism Scheels is dedicated to supporting the communities in which we live by being an active member within the community through everyday leadership. Scheels associates are challenged to make that same commitment. Our associates make a difference everyday by getting involved in everything from Meals on Wheels to supporting those in our communities who need help in a time of crisis. From the United Way campaigns to community service organizations and local sports teams, we take pride in being able to improve the lives of others, that’s why we donate our time, energy and resources to various organizations, teams and individuals in our community.

Education Scheels realizes that education is not only important to the future of our youth and young adults, but to the future of our communities. One method is helping students explore learning outside the classroom by hosting field trips and other learning opportunities to schools within our stores. Groups enjoy learning about the “Walk of Presidents” and even seeing the animals within our stores or at our wildlife mountain. We believe hands-on learning makes for a greater experience, and allows students to achieve an overall better understanding.

Conservation Scheels offers various categories and levels of outdoor education. Scheels Associates and In-Store Experts are dedicated to teaching and building the awareness of sports we love so much. From Hunting and Boater Safety classes to The Refuge Garden

Project and youth fishing outings, Scheels provides unique opportunities to learn about the great outdoors. We volunteer our time because we feel strongly about the benefits of educating our communities, and want to instill the knowledge and skills necessary to be responsible and safe patrons of outdoor activities. Through our own events, programs and external partnerships, Scheels encourages a love of learning to the outdoors person of all ages.

Social Services and Health Scheels values the time and efforts put forth towards medical research. We also understand the hardships that certain medical conditions can bring. That is why Scheels participates in bake sales, silent auctions and in-store promotions and events to raise money for research and funding. We also suit up for competitions that benefit a medical related cause. From Breast Cancer to Cerebral Palsy, Scheels gladly donates resources to cover medical expenses, fund research and find a cure. Scheels’ quiet involvement in these causes has made an impact on many people and within many communities.

Athletics Scheels understands the importance of health in both mind and body, and recognizes that participating in sports programs offers benefits and lessons that carry over into all aspects of life. Scheels supports all types of athletics, from youth softball
