Dear Friends of Special Olympics Montana, When you make the choice to be involved during the 2013 State Summer Games, everyone – athletes, coaches, families, volunteers, sponsors, and you – will be able to say with tremendous pride and satisfaction, “I’m Part of Something Special.” What’s so special? Imagine being part of something larger than yourself. Imagine thousands of volunteers and fans coming together to help lift up others. Imagine being witness to people giving their personal best effort on and off the playing field, no matter how large or small the achievement. Imagine being champions of all that is right and all that is good. Just imagine. And when you imagine what you want for your life, you will then know from deep within your soul what every Special Olympics Montana athlete wants too. Through the joy of sports, these Games give all of us an opportunity to log a gold medal performance. Through this celebration of life, we all come to know what it means to create communities of acceptance, respect and inclusion. Among the catalysts for change are approximately 100 key volunteers on the Games Management Team as well as 1,500 volunteers from Billings who will host these Games. Led by Games’ Co-Directors Rick McCann of First Interstate Bank and Steve Wahrlich of the Best Western Clock Tower Inn, these individuals have spent countless hours preparing for the arrival of Montana’s most determined athletes. We recognize these amazing volunteers for their passion and seemingly limitless energy! To our sponsors, noted proudly in this souvenir program, we thank you for investing in people of all abilities. To all these tremendous stewards of this movement, thank you for giving so generously of your time, talent, and treasure. “I’m Part of Something Special.” Will you be part of something special? Now’s your chance! Please join us for the 2013 Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games, May 15-17 in Billings. First Interstate Bank Premier Sponsor of the 2013 State Summer Games Wil Malsom, a junior at Billings West High and a member of the Billings’ Schools Special Olympics team, is ready to compete in the 100 meter and 4x100 meter races, the TurboJav, and bowling. Wil takes tremendous pride in training and he loves to compete. To hear him tell it, Wil is going to be among the most determined athletes at State Summer Games. Just as athletes give their personal best so does the Games’ Premier Sponsor, First Interstate Bank. For the second year of a three-year commitment, First Interstate Bank has once again dedicated significant financial and human resources to organize and host these Games. First Interstate Bank Region President and Honorary Games Chairman,
Keith Cook, said, “We take great pride in serving our communities. When we help people of all abilities find joy in their lives and be successful, we create more vibrant and healthier homes, neighborhoods and communities.” Scores of First Interstate Bank employees are preparing for the arrival of more than 1,000 athletes from approximately 69 teams. Hundreds more will volunteer during competitions and at a variety of special events. “First Interstate Bank and Special Olympics Montana share core values,” said Special Olympics Montana President/CEO Bob Norbie. “We are both fans and advocates of dignity, respect, and generosity.”
It’s been said that a true friend is someone who understands the past, believes in the future, and accepts you just the way you are; in the lives of Special Olympics Montana athletes, nothing is more important. As Premier Fan of the Games, First Interstate Bank is a true friend of Special Olympics Montana, helping athletes like Wil achieve their goals and realize their dreams. “Through the joy of sports, we empower and enable athletes to grow their self-confidence and live full productive lives,” Keith explained. “Together, with Special Olympics Montana, we are helping athletes find their rightful place in our society.”

Special Olympics summer games set for second year in Billings By ZACH BENOIT zbenoit@billingsgazette.com

The wheels are greased a little better. The parts fit together a little tighter. A few seconds might be shaved off here and there. The Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games went so well last year in Billings that casual spectators and even volunteers might not see much difference when the games return to town on May 14-17. But the folks in charge are focused on refining what already worked so well and determined to make the experience of the thousands of athletes, coaches and visitors expected to flood town for the games even better. “We’ll be able to take a great thing and make it better,” said Bob Norbie, SOMT president and CEO. “In all of my years (2012) was among the top two games management teams I’ve ever had the privilege of working with and they are determined to take what they’ve done so well and polish it.” The games will bring an estimated 1,100 athletes with intellectual disabilities — organizers hope to add 100 more to that number by the time they start — nearly 500 coaches and thousands of volunteers, family and friends to Billings. Over those three days, Special Olympics athletes will compete in a dozen Olympic-style sports, ranging from track and field to swimming, from kayaking to soccer. “The athletes are always so pleased to be here to compete in the games,” said First Interstate Bank Vice President Rick McCann, who is Billings games co-chair, along with Clocktower Inn owner Steve Wahrlich. “A lot of the athletes know each other. This is their one time of the year to come together at the largest venue, see each other and compete,” McCann said. The games will kick off with Opening Ceremonies on May 15 at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark. The ceremonies are free to the public and include the Parade of Athletes, the lighting of the torch and entertainment. Officials from SOMT estimate that the games will add about $1 million into the Billings economy, thanks to several thousand people spending three or four days in town. However, they say the impact of the games goes far beyond a dollar amount. “We use sports as a platform to help athletes, first and foremost, develop skills on the playing field so that they can excel off the playing field,” Norbie said. “When you do that in partnership with coaches, volunteers and the community and even fans in the stands, I think all of us are inspired. By their example, it inspires all of us to be more determined to work harder.” McCann said that the entire games management team, made up of about 60 people, is returning from last year, something virtually unheard of. That strong corps of returning leadership will allow them to hit the ground running and is a big reason why he and other games organizers have high hopes for the 2013 version. “We’re expecting that the enthusiasm that we wound up with in 2012 will continue forward,” McCann said. “Being the in middle year of a three-year run (in Billings), this is just an alignment of the stars.”

Last year, more than 80 Special Olympics Montana athletes received free corrective eyewear through the world’s largest provider of healthcare services for athletes with intellectual disabilities. The glasses, sunglasses and sportglasses came through the Wellness Park at last year’s State Summer Games in Billings as part of Special Olympics’ Healthy Athletes Program. The eye care, and myriad other services and screenings, will be available again to more than 1,000 attending the Summer Games in Billings this week. “This is not a sympathy circumstance,” said Rick McCann, the games’ co-chair for their three-year Billings run. “We do this so that these athletes who train hard every darn day can go in and compete in what they’ve been working so hard for.” The Wellness Park is set up for two full days during the summer games at Rocky Mountain College’s Fortin Education Center, taking up three of the building’s gyms. Special Olympics athletes can receive health screenings, healthy living tips and other related services. “It’s kind of like having a built-in health fair for all of these athletes,” said Jason Mahoney, emergency preparedness coordinator at St. Vincent Healthcare and the games’ Wellness Park and first aid coordinator. Services include eye exams — which can provide athletes with corrective eyewear, if needed — dental screenings, foot care booths and general health-improvement activities. Much of it is set up to cater to specific needs of the athletes. “It doesn’t provide treatment, but it starts the process,” said Vicki Dunham, SOMT’s chief operating officer. “The follow-up is made as a recommendation or referral to the athlete’s medical care provider. It’s such an important thing because an athlete may not complain or even be
aware that there’s a problem.” Last year, as many as one third of the 1,200 athletes competing in the Summer Games took advantage of the services at the Wellness Park. Mahoney said they try to make the booths and presentations fun and interactive, such as teaching athletes about drinking milk and then having them pose for pictures with a milk mustache. “We try to mix the importance of these health topics to make it fun and interesting,” he said. Making the Wellness Park run is one of the biggest driving factors for all of Special Olympics Montana: volunteers. About 100 people are needed each day to operate the park, from handing out water and fliers to performing the screenings. Last year, an entire accounting firm took a day off to come and volunteer. Overall, about 1,800 people volunteered for last year’s games, and it’ll take that many again this year. “You don’t see the 60 Knights of Columbus who show up at 6 a.m. to make lunch for volunteers and athletes every day,” said Tracy Neary, St. Vincent Healthcare’s director of mission outreach and the games’ support services co-director. “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes detail and a lot of people that come together for each team.” Volunteers do everything from provide transportation to coach teams, from preparing the fields for competition to providing meals for athletes and families. Mahoney said that, as one of the games’ main sponsors, St. Vincent Healthcare’s employees have been volunteering in droves, including at the Wellness Park. The Wellness Park, while just one part of the volunteer-driven services at the Summer Games, takes those employees from all over Billings and puts them to use for the athletes, Dunham said. “The range of medical professionals willing to give their time that are trained to do this, who are willing to give their time for a couple of days to do something like the Wellness Park, it’s such a phenomenal gift,” she said.
