SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOW 2018
It’s like Pinterest, but in person 35th annual Spring Home Improvement Show has more local examples in one place than online competitors By TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com The diversity in each home improvement-related industry displayed on websites like Houzz and Pinterest can be found in one fell swoop. The Spring Home Improvement Show at MetraPark has more than visuals; it boasts live people to answer questions, give quotes and provide local examples. The spring show has evolved to include the latest in technology and innovations in all spectrums of homeownership (and even “rentership”). “You’re going to get the benefit of 35 years’ worth of involvement,” said Mark Hedin, who founded the biannual show through Rimrock Promotions with his late-father Merlyn in 1983. Hedin and his wife Rhonda share the business with sons Beau and Devon. With family as the focus, the Hedins have something for everyone at the three-day show March 2-4 at MetraPark’s Montana Pavilion and Expo Center.
means the parking, upper lot shuttle, admission, kids’ workshops and activities, and grand prize sweepstakes—it’s all free. And the home improvement ideas and business relationships fostered by the show are free, too. “Not only are you able to experience, but also develop a rapport,” Beau said. ‘It’s an experience’ The Hedins emphasize that the Mark says anything that’s an “ex- people manning the 650 different experience” is free to show-goers. That hibits are the same people potentially
being hired for home projects. “They’re there to stand by their work,” added Devon. Local businesses who don’t have their own showrooms or storefronts use the show as their platform. Six businesses come away with prizes for first, second and third in “most innovative” and “best-in-show.” Billings Nursery placed first in best-in-show last year for their intricate landscaping display. Some businesses take several weeks to set up and take down exhibits

From 20-ton custom waterfalls and outdoor saunas to home theaters and “she sheds,” there’s something for him, her and the kids. “It’s all about the DIY-ers, too,” Beau said. Homeowners can use the show as a think tank and fine-tune how to get the job done, he said.
Workshops, wonder and food trucks While the real meat and potatoes of the show are the exhibits, perusing every booth can take all weekend. Event-goers are encouraged to sate their palates with several local food truck options and keep kids occupied with workshops scattered throughout both buildings. The Home Depot returns as the go-to place for families to build something together. Custom balloon animal and face-painting activities are also available, as is Photo Booth Billings, an on-site photo booth free for families. And while local exhibitors are commonplace, nationally-known
businesses like Golden West Marketing will be showcasing “As Seen on TV” products that Mark touts as nothing short of spectacular. “Be prepared to be mesmerized,” he said. “These people are so good; be prepared to take (the product) home with you.” Thirty-thousand people are expected across the three days and no
one is required to be present to win one of the 15 grand prizes worth $35,000 in total. Winners will be notified Monday, March 5. Devon says people who’ve attended in the past shouldn’t feel deterred from coming again. “Each year it continues to evolve and change and each year it gets a little bit better.”

Carbon monoxide remediation By Metro Services Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. Because carbon monoxide is found in the fumes produced when fuel is burned, it is present in and around homes. As a result, homeowners should be aware of carbon monoxide and make every effort to detect its presence. CO forms most readily when there is insufficient oxygen to complete combustion and produce carbon dioxide. Hot water closets, furnaces in crawlspaces, heating appliances in attics and other contained areas are common areas where CO can form. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that thousands of people visit emergency rooms and are hospitalized because of CO poisoning every year. While CO is a risk for just about anyone, infants, the elderly, those with breathing problems or chronic heart disease and people with anemia are most likely to get sick from CO. CO has earned the moniker the silent killer because it cannot be iden-
tified without the presence of a carbon monoxide detector. If a person believes he or she is smelling carbon monoxide, that person is probably mistaking the odor for other combustion byproducts that the human nose can sense. CO is a byproduct of vehicle exhaust, boat engines, stoves, lanterns, grills, furnaces and fireplaces. CO is produced anytime something is burning. That is why it is essential that products designed to be used outdoors are used exclusively outside, and that indoor appliances are properly vented to the outdoors. CO can build up indoors and poison people and pets who breathe it in. Some people may not recognize that CO is problematic in a home until multiple residents start complaining of similar symptoms. Common CO poisoning symptoms include nausea and vomiting, dizziness, chest pain, confusion, headache and other flulike symptoms, advises the consumer advocacy group Carbon Monoxide Kills. Those with repeated exposure to high levels of CO may eventually
develop cerebral edema, which is a swelling of the brain. CO can compress brain cells and destroy them, leading to neurological issues and death. CO poisoning is actually the result of the head and heart not receiving sufficient oxygen. CO detectors can save lives and should be installed in all homes and apartments. The National Fire Protection Association says CO detectors shall be centrally located outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms. Individuals should follow the manufacturer instructions regarding where on the wall or ceiling the CO detectors should be mounted. As an added safety precaution, CO detectors should be placed on every floor of the home. Gas sensors in CO alarms have limited life spans, so they should be replaced generally every five to six years, because calibrating and testing for CO is more difficult than simply replacing the alarms. Installing or replacing carbon monoxide detectors is an easy improvement that can help save lives.

Suggestions when shopping for fencing By Metro Services Fences can improve functionality of a yard and provide extra security and privacy. Some fences are decorative while others are functional. Families with children and/or companion animals also may find fencing is a necessity to keep everyone safe and corralled. With a vast array of fencing materials available, homeowners may find it challenging to decide which material is right for their properties. The following breakdown can help homeowners learn more about fencing and potentially point them in the right direction regarding which material to choose for their properties.
Budget Budget is one of the first considerations many homeowners have when installing fencing. Pricing will affect whether one can afford a chain link fence (one of the most budget-friendly options), wrought iron or ornate wood (more expensive). Pricing out several different types of fences will give homeowners an idea of which material fits into their budgets.
Townships and other municipalities may have their own rules concerning fence type, property borders, fence height and other factors that will have to be adhered to so that fencing will meet code. If such rules are not following fines may be imposed and the fence may have to be removed. Homeowners also may need permits to install fencing, whether they are hiring a contractor or doing the work themselves.
Maintenance Purpose Homeowners install fencing for various reasons. If a fence is an ornamental way to delineate property lines, a picket fence or a post-and-rail fence are simple options that can lend a homey feel to a property. These types of fences also can enhance and frame landscaping elements, such as gardens. In many area, laws require homeowners to install fencing around swimming pools. In such instances, chain link fencing that does not obstruct views of the pool might be
the best choice. If security or privacy is the main desire, tall fences that make it difficult for neighbors to see into the yard may make an ideal choice.
Restrictions It is important to understand local regulations before installing fencing. Communities governed by homeowners’ associations may have rules in place that dictate the type of fences that can be installed.
Consumer resource Angie’s List advises homeowners to consider maintenance before choosing a fencing material. Wooden fencing requires the most maintenance due to painting and staining. Aluminum or vinyl fencing requires less maintenance, but it can be harder to repair isolated damage or replace pickets, if necessary. In some instances, the entire fence may have to be replaced. Homeowners install fencing for many different reasons. Considering price, budget, purpose and maintenance before making a decision regarding fencing can help homeowners make the best decision possible.

Big Sky, Big Potential… Why Solar is right for 2018 C hances are you’ve heard something about solar in the news lately. From
Public Service Commission rulings here in our state to tariffs at the federal level, the solar industry has been creating plenty of headlines. It is a lot to take, which is why those of us who have made our careers in this fast growing industry affectionately call it “The Solar Coaster”
B ut don’t you worry! While it is a wild ride, as a consumer the only thrill you will get is that of saving money on your power bills. The Solar Electric Industry in Montana is thriving, and there has never been a beeer time to consider making solar electricity a part of your life. Here’s what you need to know: Federal Tariffs: It is true that a 30% tariff has been imposed on imported solar panels, but that does not mean the price of systems is going to rise. The panels themselves are only a portion of the cost of an installed system, and the 30% will be absorbed throughout the supply chain. This means the end user will hardly notice. As technology has developed and the cost of the other components of the system have declined, the price of installed solar here in Montana has decreased steadily over the past 5 years. Despite the recent tariff ruling, 2018 will still prove to be the best year yet to install solar here in Montana. Net-Metering: Net Metering is an electricity policy for utility customers who operate their own power systems using Solar (PV). When generating more power than is needed at your site, excess electricity is shipped to the grid through the power meter, reversing the meter from its usual direction. When you put power onto the grid you receive a credit for each Kwh. While this policy has garnered much aeention in the last year, Northwestern Energy, Yellowstone Valley Electric and other electric providers ac ross our state continue to offer wonderful “Net-Metering” arrangements to their customers and members. Additionally, Northwestern Energy has agreed to honor any existing agreements, which means if you choose solar now, you won’t be subject to any changes made to this policy in the future. But Wait, There’s More… Still curious how it works and how you can integrate it into your home or business? Join Harvest Solar on Thursday March 22cnd at L.P. Anderson Tires West Side Store, which is powered by solar. At this event you will learn more about how the technology works, what an installation looks like and how you can use solar electricity to light up your life. Thursday March 22cnd 5:30 PM L.P. Anderson Tire 1445 41st St W, Billings, MT 59106

Transform bathrooms with technology By Metro Services Technology is infiltrating every room of the house. Many new home buyers are millennials, and this tech-savvy demographic covets technological innovations. A recent survey by Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate indicates 77 percent of Generation X and Y home buyers want their homes equipped with the tech capabilities they have grown accustomed to. Many of these involve smart innovations, including those that can transform one of the most private rooms in the house—the bathroom. Automated home theater rooms and Wi-Fi-enabled home security systems have become the norm, but what tech improvements are available to make the powder room more in touch with today’s digital lifestyle? According to the home improvement resource The Spruce, bathrooms have the most potential of any rooms to be improved with technology. The following are just some of the bathroom gadgets and gizmos no one should resist before giving a try. Automatic faucets: Infrared sensors have been helping keep public restrooms more hygienic for years. The same technology can be used in home bathrooms to cur-
tail water waste and keep faucets and sinks from becoming infested with germs. In addition, faucets with built-in timers can be programmed to set tasks for brushing teeth or washing your face. Musical shower: Instead of having to blast the volume on the portable speaker you use in the bathroom, a wireless speaker
is built into some showerheads. This enables those who like to sing in the shower or listen to podcasts while washing up to enjoy this luxury effortlessly. Smarter weight management: Bathroom scales have gone high-tech as well, with various options enabling users to measure weight, BMI and body fat percent-
age before sending the data wirelessly to a phone, tablet or computer. This can put you in greater control of fitness goals. High-tech toilets: Borrowing ideas from bidets and trends around the world, modern toilets do not require hands or paper. These toilets have temperaturecontrolled water, spritzing wands and air dryers to clean and sanitize. Self-cleaning toilets help busy professionals save time and are ideal for those who always want their bowls as clean as possible. And if you desire extra comfort, toilet seat warmers are available, while LED lights can make nighttime restroom visits easier. Soaking tubs: As fast as stand-alone showers were introduced to the modern bathroom, tubless designs have been replaced with streamlined soaking tubs. Tubs come with different features, including chromatherapy, which employs colored lights to enhance mood. Air baths are controlled electronically and provide different levels of sensation for those who are skipping the hot tub. Round out these innovations with automated lights, chilled medicine cabinets and aromatherapy, and your bathroom will indeed become a technological spa.

Extra lighting A kitchen should be a balance of form and function. A combination of overhead lighting, decorative lighting and task lighting can illuminate all areas of the space effectively.
Appliance garages Architectural and design resource Houzz says that appliance garages are popular kitchen additions, too. Set at countertop level, these cabinets allow people to keep small appliances plugged in but tucked neatly behind closed doors. Kitchen remodels are a sizable investment, and renovations can be customized to make the kitchen more hospitable for all in residence.

Which renovations are worth an investment? By Metro Services The cost of remodeling a home is easier to stomach when homeowners can expect to recoup a sizable percentage of the costs of the renovation. While basing renovations on their potential impact on resale value may be unwise, return on investment is something homeowners must consider when mulling renovation projects. Many homeowners wonder which renovations will resonate most strongly with potential buyers when a home is put up for sale. According to Remodeling magazine, homeowners are less likely to recoup their investment in a major kitchen or bathroom remodel than they would with basic home maintenance, such as new siding. That’s because buyers are most interested in how the bones of the house or those elements that keep the house protected and can be costly to fix were maintained. Each year Remodeling magazine issues its Cost vs. Value Report, which highlights the projects that offer the most return on investment. In 2016, the No. 1 project was the installation of fiberglass attic insulation, which could produce 116.9 percent recouped
cost and a resale value of $1,482. Rounding out the top five were manufactured stone veneer for the exterior, a standard new garage door, a steel entry door and an upscale garage door. Projects with the least return on investment tended to be more expensive undertakings that offered returns of roughly 57 percent. Such projects included bathroom additions, upscale bathroom additions, upscale master suite additions, upscale bath-
room remodels and deck additions. For those considering more expensive renovations, keep these figures in mind, courtesy of Forbes: A major remodel of a 200-squarefoot kitchen can cost around $113,000, with homeowners recouping 60 percent. Replacing 1,250-square feet of siding with new fiber siding can cost $13,000, but homeowners can expect to recoup 80 percent of that cost at resale.
Replacing 10 existing double-hung windows with vinyl low-e glass windows is valued at $14,000, and the return can be between 68 and 73 percent. There are even renovations that seem like good ideas but can actually hurt the resale value of a home. MSN Money lists these projects as money-wasters for those who want to sell soon: Lavish lighting fixtures can look dated in a few years when trends change. Wallpaper or textured walls can be notoriously hard to change, and buyers know that. Kitschy renovations, such as 1950s diner tiles, may appeal to only a select number of people. Neutral renovations are better if resale is the goal. Many real estate experts warn against converting a bedroom into anything other than a bedroom even for the purposes of a home office. Such conversions can immediately devalue the property. The same can be said about combining two small bedrooms into one larger space. Homeowners should investigate potential renovations before committing the time and money to something that may offer little value at resale.

Complete these home improvements over the weekend By Metro Services Home improvement projects ramp up when the weather warms up, as homeowners channel the rejuvenating feelings of spring and tackle their home to-do lists. Large-scale renovations can greatly affect a home, but smaller projects can yield impressive results and be completed over the course of a single weekend. If time is of the essence, these weekend or one-day projects may satisfy homeowners’ desires to fix up their homes. Create an accent wall. Painting a focal wall in a home can create a serious impact. The bonus is it will not take as long or require as many materials as painting an entire room. Accent walls frequently feature a bold color, so decide on placement and tackle this project in less than a day. Install stair runners. Dress up hardwood stairs with decorative carpet runners. Runners come in elongated pieces of carpeting or individual pieces that can be placed on each step. If carpeting doesn’t fit with the home’s design, painting individual stair treads also can create visual appeal. Dress up the entryway. An entryway is a guest’s first impression of a home. Many entryways can use a minor overhaul,
both inside and outside. Paint the front door a different color so it pops from the curb. Install a new mailbox or decorative house numbers. A new welcome mat can change the look as well. Inside, consider laying a new floor. Resilient vinyl tiles come in many different patterns and can mimic the look
of wood, travertine or marble. Installing a floor can take a day or two. Install a new faucet. Instantly improve a kitchen or a bathroom with new fixtures. New faucets can provide aesthetic appeal and low-flow faucets can help conserve water.
Create a gallery on the staircase. Gather and arrange framed photos, artwork or wall accents so that they ascend the wall of a staircase. This creates a designer touch and can dress up an often barren area of wall space. Install a fresh light fixture. Improve drab spaces with a little illumination. Better Homes & Gardens suggests replacing an existing fixture with something new and vibrant. If hanging a new fixture is not within one’s skill set, free-standing table or floor lamps also can cast a new glow on a space. Add molding. Molding can add instant aesthetic appeal to a room. Molding is appropriate near the floor, at the top of walls where they meet the ceiling, or even midwall as a chair rail. Some homeowners like to create framed molding on walls in formal living spaces. Update kitchen or bathroom hardware. Replacing hardware is a fast and easy project, but one that can have immediate impact. Swap out tired or outdated hardware for newer brushed metals and more impactful shapes and designs. Home renovations do not need to take weeks or months. Many projects can be completed over the course of a weekend.

What is the tiny house movement? By Metro Services The tiny house movement has transformed the way many people look at housing and how it can help them downsize not only their residences, but also their lives. Living small has been embraced as an eco-friendly way to cut costs and simplify life. According to the tiny house resource The Tiny Life, the typical American home is 2,600 square feet, while the typical tiny house is between 100 and 400 square feet. Many tiny homes are smaller than the average urban apartment. Proponents of the small house movement say that living the tiny life isn’t really a sacrifice, but a way to experience a simpler, fuller life that frees them from expensive mortgage payments and unnecessary clutter. One of the advantages of tiny house living is that buyers are often able to buy their homes (whether stationary or mobile) outright, eliminating the need to finance their purchases. Tiny homes also boast much lower utility bills than more traditional homes. Outfitting tiny homes with woodburning appliances can keep heating costs to a minimum. In some instances, tiny
homes are completely off the grid, harvestAccording to the resource Living Big in ing electricity through solar panels and em- a Tiny House, the tiny house movement ploying rain-capturing technology to sup- is eco-friendly. In addition, the resources needed to build and sustain such homes pales in comparison to those needed to build and maintain more traditional homes. Furthermore, with less interior space, residents of tiny homes are less likely to acquire items they don’t necessarily need, reducing clutter and saving money. The following statistics, courtesy of The Tiny Life, paint a picture of the tiny home lifestyle: Sixty-eight percent of tiny house people have no mortgage, and 78 percent own their home. The average cost to build a tiny house is $23,000 for do-it-yourselfers. Eighty-nine percent of tiny house dwellers have less credit card debt than the average person. Tiny house owners earn an average of $42,038 each year. Many tiny home owners are age 50 or older. Those interested in the tiny house lifestyle can find many companies that now specialize in these dwellings. Empty-nesters looking to downsize may find tiny homes are an affordable way to simplify their lives.

How empty-nesters can transform their homes By Metro Services After bringing home a bubbly baby boy or girl, it can be hard for parents to imagine that a day will come when their kids are off to college and then onto their own apartment or house. After spending decades nurturing and caring for children, parents are then left with a suddenly quiet house and probably much more time to spare. If saying goodbye to the kids also means extra house, there’s the option to downsize or make that extra space more useful. Homeowners who choose to stay put can renovate vacant rooms into spaces that meet their newfound needs. Hobby haven: If you’ve always meant to set up a crafting room, home-brewing station or an artist’s studio, now is an ideal time to do just that. Figure out which supplies you will need and begin reworking that former bedroom into a new sanctuary for leisure interests. Guest suite: If you’ve never had a spare bedroom to entertain guests, a child’s former bedroom can fit the bill. It may not be that difficult to transform such spaces into relaxing and inviting rooms for overnight guests. Be sure there is at least a queen-
sized bed and a dresser or chest of drawers to stash belongings. Select paint colors and linens in neutral tones so the room will be inviting to guests. Living room redo: When there’s an
entire soccer team coming over to hang out, that large sectional sofa or modular seating may be ideal. Now that the kids are out of the house and their friends are no longer coming over for movie night, living rooms
can be made more intimate with small-scale seating. A small sofa and two comfortable chairs may be a more fitting option. At-home gym: Save on gym membership fees by building a mini studio right at home. Choose one of the larger bedrooms and then fill it with some fitness equipment, such as an elliptical trainer, a bench press bench and some free weights. Store rolledup mats in the closet for yoga or Pilates sessions. Expanded bathroom: If space has always been at a premium in the bathroom, borrow area from an empty bedroom and turn it into a spa. Install a soaking tub separate from the shower, and fill the room with other amenities, such as a warming lamp or even a small sauna. Home office: Working from home a few days a week may be more plausible when nearing retirement, as it will be a smoother transition from heading to the office each day to spending more time at home. Turn a bedroom or den into an office space with a new desk and bookshelves. An empty nest can be a bittersweet experience, but parents can make such situations work for them by transforming their homes to better reflect their current needs.
