2017 STATE ALL-CLASS WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Billings’ Brook, Bertsch set to announce state wrestling By JOHN LETASKY jletasky@billingsgazette.com Wrestling fans at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark will be informed, and at times entertained, by two of the region’s best publicaddress announcers over the next two days. Kevin Brook and Todd Bertsch will be sitting mat-side from the scoring platform overlooking the 12 mats and handling the duties for this weekend’s 28th All-Class State Wrestling Tournament. Brook has lent his voice to the ex-

travaganza several times over the years and this will be Bertsch’s third time working the meet. While studying radio and TV broadcasting at Dickinson State in North Dakota, Bertsch began announcing as part of the workstudy program 27 years ago. Brook has been behind the microphone for 15 years and got his start at Billings West when then activities coordinator Doug Robison was in need of a volleyball announcer. While the duo seemed a natu-

ral announce team at last year’s state tourney, it was actually the first time they had worked together. “I knew who Kevin was in passing, but I’d never sat down, side-by-side, and worked with him,” said Bertsch, recalling last year’s event. “He’s a gem. I love working with him.” While Bertsch — who normally would be announcing basketball games in February — had only previously filled in at state wrestling once before last year, Brook is a veteran wrestling announcer. Bertsch explained that at first he relied on some of Brook’s knowledge of the sport, but Brook said the duo worked so well together because they each have their own style, which in turn complements the other. “We just clicked,” said Brook, adding two different voices helps those in the audience enjoy the experience more because one voice can become monotone and tuned out by the fans.

Bertsch is the voice for Billings Skyview boys basketball, Billings Senior girls basketball and many of the state tournaments at Metra. He’ll also announce the evening games at the NAIA national women’s basketball tournament March 15-21 at Metra. Brook’s friendly and welcoming voice is familiar to fans of Senior football, wrestling and boys basketball. And while fans will notice Brook’s knowledge of wrestling — and Bertsch’s constant professionalism — this weekend, the duo tries to stay out of the spotlight. “We don’t want to draw attention to ourselves,” Bertsch said. “We just want to do it.” Following is a portion of the rest of the conversation The Gazette had with Brook and Bertsch: Q: What is your favorite part about announcing the all-class state wrestling tournament? Bertsch: The parade of athletes. When you see those small schools come out and those young kids, that is incredible. For those kids to be at the Metra is incredible for them. ... To look on the floor and

see those massive colors. It is amazing. As a basketball announcer, one team has a uniform and the other team has a uniform and there are two colors. Here, it’s colors and colors and style and style. Brook: I love the energy of the crowd, the honesty of the sport, and the emotion of all involved in the match. There really is a family feel to the event. There is tremendous respect that goes hand in hand with wrestling. Q: What is the most challenging part of your job at the all-class state wrestling tournament? Bertsch: Kevin knows some of the wrestlers’ names when I sit down on Friday and I don’t. For me, the challenge is the name recognition and Kevin fills me in on it. ... If I look at a basketball game, I’m talking 12 to 14 kids. You go from 12 to 14 kids who see time on the floor to 600 kids. Brook: The most challenging part is being sure you announce names correctly. I want to be sure I get them correct. These wrestlers have earned the opportunity to be at the tournament. I need to do my best to honor and respect them. Also, it is important to their par-

ents, friends, and fans. Q: Besides announcing, what is your favorite part of the all-class state wrestling tournament? Bertsch: It’s not just about Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. (for the finals). It’s Friday morning at 10 a.m. It’s game on. ... And the fan base and support for each of those communities, wow. There is no other sport that brings us all together. Brook: I enjoy watching the battles between wrestlers. The intensity, the emotion, and the passion that each match has the potential of bringing is addicting. Watching two gladiators in the arena giving their all is exciting. Q: Do you look forward to the all-class state wrestling tournament every year? Bertsch: I really look forward to it. I look forward to the magnitude of the sport and what it brings. And working with Kevin makes it work. Brook: Absolutely. It is a wrestling family that stretches from Baker to Dillon, Troy to Sidney and all points in between. Having the opportunity to stay connected with coaches and fans across the state is pretty special.

Sidney native Eggum always chasing a goal By JOHN LETASKY jletasky@billingsgazette.com Brandon Eggum knows a thing or two about goals. The Sidney native began setting them as a young AAU wrestler and along the way captured three State A championships before becoming a three-time All-American wrestler at the University of Minnesota, where he also won Big Ten Conference crowns at 184 pounds in 1999 and 2000. Eggum was a State A runner-up as a freshman before closing his career with three straight state brackets and graduating Sidney High in 1995. On Thursday, during his 16th season on the University of Minnesota wrestling staff, he became the eighth head coach in Golden Gophers’ history. After longtime coach J Robinson was fired, Eggum had been serving as the team’s interim head coach after serving as the head assistant coach for five years. The 2001 World silver medalist offered a message of hard work and perseverance to young Montana wrestlers looking for their own success. “The big thing is you set goals for yourself and you dream big and you put your time and work in,” Eggum, 40, told The Gazette by phone. “In the end I always

believe if you are doing things right and working hard, good things will happen. That has been my motto growing up in Montana. I was around great people. In a sport like wrestling, you are around bluecollar people and you get out of it what you put into it and it is that way in wrestling. “Do things right and lead the right way and in time, when an opportunity presents itself, you have to be open and take that risk. That is the direction I led my life by and growing up as a wrestler is no different. I’ve had ups and downs, but you take the good in each situation and adapt. That is what has helped me get to this point in my life.” An assistant coach on each of the school’s three national title teams, Eggum is proud of what the Golden Gophers have accomplished in his time with the team. He is now thankful for the opportunity he has to lead his alma mater. Eggum also gave credit to those who helped him along his journey, thanking his youth, high school and college coaches and teammates. “I am excited and honored for this opportunity. It is something I’ve dreamed about,” he said. “I’m proud to be able to have this opportunity to compete and coach where I competed and went to school. I am very thankful for all the support I got when I was in Montana, especially from the com-

munity in Sidney. The whole wrestling community in Montana is so supportive. Guy Melby (Eggum’s high school coach in Sidney) has done a lot for me and I can’t thank him enough. There are plenty of others in Sidney who are supportive and have followed me throughout my career. “The wrestling community is a small, tight-knit community and helps you when

they can, and I feel like I’ve had a lot of support from the wrestling community.” Eggum graduated from Minnesota in 2000 with a B.S. in Applied Economics. After graduation, he trained with the U.S. national team before retiring in 2004. Before becoming an assistant coach at the school, Eggum balanced his international career with serving as the Gophers’ strength and conditioning coordinator from 2000-04. When he began coaching with the Gophers, Eggum said he knew that eventually he would like to rise to the level of head coach. And deep down in his heart, Eggum always wanted to lead Minnesota. “I’ve had other opportunities coachingwise, but my dream was to coach at my alma mater where I competed and developed friendships and achieved my goals,” he said. “That was my main reason for staying here.” A family man, Eggum is married to Katrina, whom he met at the Olympic Training Center, where she was also a wrestler. “That is one thing we always joke about,” Eggum said. “Now my boy is wrestling and I travel on the weekends. I always joke with her that even though I’m on the road, coach is at home.”

Frazer offering wrestling for 1st time in school history By JOHN LETASKY jletasky@ billingsgazette.com It means a lot for the four members of Frazer’s firstyear wrestling program to represent the Bearcubs. The Class C school located on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation added wrestling this season. Frazer is a school of about 40-45 students said wrestling coach Jacob Turcotte. The town sits approximately 19 miles west of Wolf Point. Given the choice to either co-op with Wolf Point, like it does in football, or start its own team, those interested in wrestling at Frazer went through the process to start their own squad. It was a long road, but

well worth it, according to Turcotte. “My son, William is a freshman this year. He has wrestled the last four years,” said Turcotte, who teaches English at Frazer High. “He loves wrestling and we were talking about high school wrestling. At that time last year when we were having this conversation, he would have had to co-op with the Wolf Point Wolves. He didn’t quite like that idea and thought, ‘We are Bearcubs’ and wanted to start our own program. “We looked into it and went through the hoops we had to. We went to several school board meetings and asked the students about interest and received quite a bit of interest. We went to the

school board and had plans for what mat we were going to buy and what equipment we were going to buy. And the school board went for it.”

For William, a 152-pound competitor, he wanted the school’s nickname of “Bearcubs” to appear on his singlet.

“That is where I go to school,” he said. “Our football team is a co-op with Wolf Point and always on game day, they would walk around with Wolf Point jerseys and not Frazer Bearcubs jerseys and I didn’t think that was right.” Other team members are sophomores Wyatt Miller (152) and Wesley Weston (285) and freshman Patrick Follet (138). The team’s managers are Kameron Beston and Colby Clampitt, while Scott Vandall is the assistant coach. Jason Partridge wrestled for the Glasgow Scotties and volunteers his time two to three times a week to help the kids said coach Turcotte. Partridge demonstrates moves and will wrestle with Weston. Other members of the wrestling community have also helped Turcotte when he has questions. He said the coaching staffs at Glasgow and Poplar have been tremendous. “We’ve had a lot of help, being a first-year team and first-year coach,” said coach Turcotte. “We’ve had to reach out to a lot of people and ask questions. Just filling out paperwork and getting the proper paperwork to the Montana High School Association (MHSA) and getting kids properly registered for tournaments.” Turcotte said his wres-

tlers have taken their fair share of lumps, but he is proud of their dedication and commitment and said those two traits will pay dividends in the wrestlers’ futures. For Miller, he enjoys wrestling because of the effort and skill level required. Miller said his first few matches were bumpy, but the road has gotten a little more smooth. “I lost a few matches right off at the first meet,” Miller said. “I got it out of myself because it is only my first year and I’ve only been going for so long now. I should have worked harder, though. “(Now) I’ve definitely changed my mindset on it and am pushing myself a lot harder than I have been.” While he is likely to miss the rest of the season due to a back injury, William Turcotte said he plans on wrestling once again when fully healthy. William still comes to practice every day to support his teammates. Before the injury, William Turcotte represented the Bearcubs well in earning the first win in Frazer wrestling history at the Wolf Point Mixer in December. “That made me feel good,” he said. “It’s just another win, though. I’m just more happy that I can represent Frazer.”
