Wrestlers face off in the opening rounds of the 2013 state wrestling tournament at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.

Wrestlers hoping for some ‘Metra Magic’ this weekend It’s not quite the old Boston Garden, Yankee Stadium or Lambeau Field. But for Montana high school wrestlers and fans, Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark is hallowed ground each February. It’s where “Metra Magic” flashes and causes euphoric feelings for some and, in reverse, woeful emotions for others. This Friday and Saturday when the state wrestling tournament plays out inside Montana’s grandest arena, get ready for a treat. “One thing about going to our state tournament is everybody is excited about getting to Metra,” said Guy Melby, who has guided the Sidney Eagles to eight State A titles in 28 years at the helm. “It is a great place to have a state tournament. We are just hoping to get

Class A competition In Class A, Havre is the defending champion and has won the title five times since 2007. In 2012, the Blue Ponies were third and in 2011 they were second. The top-ranked Blue Ponies again look strong, having easily won their divisional 296.5-210.5 over No. 3 Belgrade. The second-ranked Sidney Eagles should figure into the equation as to who hoists the trophy Saturday night. Sidney cruised to the Eastern A banner with a 341.5-204.5 victory over No. 9 Hardin. No. 6 Corvallis and No. 4 Columbia Falls also won their divisionals by wide margins.

The Colts only state title came 20 years ago in 1994, when they were a Class A team. Colstrip’s coach, Codey Currier, was a two-time state champ for Colstrip in 1995 and ’96. Making it official: Wrestling referee hangs up his stripes By JOHN LETASKY
jletasky@billingsgazette.com
In a sense, referee Lance Orner came full circle when he circled around the wrestling mat for the last time on Feb. 1 in Hardin. The 61-year-old Orner, a member of the Rocky Mountain College Athletic Hall of Fame from his days as a quarterback for the Battlin’ Bears, raised the hand of the winner for the last time, concluding a 29-year career as an official in Montana. “I feel really good about that being it,” Orner, the principal at Will James Middle School said, recalling one of his first big assignments was in Hardin. “I had the Eastern AA Divisionals and turned it down. … Dick Imer, the Hardin coach, called me to come down and do a match when I was at Shepherd. Hardin was ranked No. 3 and Butte Central second and Hardin won 31-29. It came down to the last match and after Dick asked if I could come back the next day and do another match. It was Dillon and Hardin and Dillon was ranked first and Hardin second. Hardin knocked them off 32-31. Both matches, the Hardin heavyweight won the last match of the night to win the dual. I’ll never forget those two. I was starting out as a referee and it was pretty big.” Dave Cobb, a referee for 18 years and principal at Billings West, said the two things that most stand out about Orner’s referee career and love of wrestling was he was a “great mentor” for new officials and a “great ambassador” for the sport. Cobb gave Orner credit for helping to expand wrestling at the middle school level in Billings. Three years ago, Orner helped get duals on the middle school schedule instead of only the traditional invites, “increasing the popularity of the sport

Lance Orner referees a wrestling match at Huntley Project High School in January. After a 29-year career, Orner retired recently.
“I plan to still go and watch a lot of wrestling. I’m going to be 62. My knees and hips still work. It’s time for the younger officials to move up. We have some good young officials in Billings.” — Lance Orner
retired wrestling referee and the team concept of it,” Cobb said. Orner has been the head of the 14-member Billings official’s pool for the past 15 years. The group includes nine master officials. Cobb said Orner’s leadership in that role required many volunteer hours. The group usually meets once a week at Will James. “Our meetings have evolved more than just learning your schedule, but
young and old officials learn from each other,” Cobb said. “We get out the mats and do demonstrations and have coaches come in and talk. It’s not just knowing the rules, but being able to apply them. Lance made study clubs meaningful and purposeful.” One of the things Orner is pleased about with the timing of his decision to retire is two more officials from the Billings pool will test up to
the master official rank next year. Aside from working various invites in the state, the Billings pool will officiate regular-season matches as far west as Livingston, as far east as Miles City and as far north as Lewistown. Occasionally the referees also venture south into Wyoming. Orner said he is going to miss the camaraderie of the referees, coaches, wrestlers and “wrestling family.” “I plan to still go and watch a lot of wrestling,” he said. “I’m going to be 62. My knees and hips still work. It’s time for the younger officials to move up. We have some good young officials in Billings. It’s time for them to move up.” Veteran Billings Skyview coach Rich Malia said Orner is the caliber of referee who “should be working the state tournament every year.” He said Orner took
the time during a match to explain a call and was clear on the calls he made, saying he was approachable and
easy to communicate with. “Lance was always trying to make himself better as a referee,” Malia said. “He went to some really tough out-of-state tournaments in the beginning of his career to make himself better … He always really worked to improve himself.” Guy Melby, who has guided the Sidney Eagles for 28 years, was sorry to hear Orner was retiring from officiating. “He has been a great example for Montana wrestling. He has always been fair and always really cares about kids and really cares about coaches,” Melby said. “He really cares about what you think and respects not only the kids wrestling and the coaches putting in the time. He has been a great ambassador for the sport of wrestling. I heard about midway through the season he was thinking about retiring and anytime you see a guy retiring who has been around that long, it is kind of sad. The sport of wrestling will miss him. Anybody I’ve ever talked to, he is a wellrespected referee and has really done a great job for Montana.”
