Winter’s showcase returns to MetraPark

O ver t he yea rs, t he Monta n a H i g h Scho ol Association state wrestling tournament has become Montana’s Winter Showcase. Fans from across the state annually flock to Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark to take in the sights, sounds and emotions of the spectacle. Last year, 21,539 spectators took in two full days of wrestling at the Metra. The MHSA said the average attendance over the past few years is 23,200. This year, it won’t be any different. There are plenty of plots boiling to a steam as we enter the 26th year of the all-class format, which features three state tournaments held under one roof. Wrestlers from Classes AA, A and B-C will meet their respective opponents. When all the takedowns, reversals, escapes, decisions, major decisions, technical falls and pins have been scored, individual weight class champions and team champions will be crowned in all three classifications.

John Letasky jletasky@billingsgazette.com

This will, as longtime Glasgow wrestling enthusiast Byron Hallock pointed out to me by email, be the 60th year the state wrestling tournament plays out in Montana. Here are some of the storylines to watch: n In Class A, Gresh Jones (126 pounds) of Sidney and Shonn Roberts (138) of Columbia Falls, along with Matt Weber (138) of Class B-C Forsyth will be attempting to win their fourth consecutive state championship. If they do so, the wrestlers will join a select list of 23 Montana mat stars in the club, including Cole Mendenhall of Great Falls and Benjamin Stroh of Please see Wrestling, 5

Chinook’s Benjamin Stroh won his fourth state title in 2012. Stroh was one of the last four-time state title holders. He now wrestles for the University of Wyoming.

Wrestling Continued from 4 Chinook, who are both currently on the University of Wyoming team. n In Class AA, Great Falls appears to be headed for a third straight team title. The Bison of coach Steve Komac were ranked first in the first four coaches polls of the season, including the last one released as of press time. The Bison qualified 22 wrestlers for the state tournament out of the Eastern AA seeding meet. Billings Senior, Butte and Bozeman each qualified 15 wrestlers, while Billings Skyview has 14, Billings West 13 and Great Falls CMR 10. In the last coaches poll, Missoula Sentinel was No. 2, Skyview No. 3 and Senior No. 4. n “Great Falls High has good kids at every spot and are really solid,” said Skyview’s Max Miller (152) prior to the Eastern AA seeding tourney at Great Falls High. “They have a lot of good seniors and are a tough team for sure.” n In Class A, Havre is the two-time defending champion. The Blue Ponies, coached for the past 20 years by Billings native and Senior graduate Scott Filius, were top-ranked in the Feb. 5 Class A poll, while Sidney was No. 2, Columbia Falls No. 3, Laurel No. 4 and Dillon No. 5. Havre cruised to the Central A Divisional with 334.5 points to 136 for second-place Lewistown.

Cole Mendenhall of Great Falls celebrates after winning his fourth state title in 2012. Mendenhall, one of the most recent two Montanans to win four state titles, now wrestles on the University of Wyoming team.

The Eagles, Wildcats, and sixth-ranked Corvallis Blue Devils easily won their respective divisionals. n “We always say we have to work harder than

them,” said Sidney’s Jones about the Blue Ponies. “We think about it every day, us and Havre. ... It will be close. We have to get the pins, techs and major decisions

every time we can.” n Can Colstrip repeat as State B-C champion? The Colts topped the Forsyth Dogies 188-160.5 at the Eastern B-C divisional. Before

Colstrip won state last year, Forsyth was champ in 2013, 2012 and 2011. Conrad won the Northern B-C divisional, Choteau the Southern B-C a nd

Eureka edged Ronan by 6.5 points in the Western B-C. In the coaches’ poll tabulated before divisionals, Choteau was No. 1, Forsyth No. 2, Colstrip No. 3, Huntley Project No. 4 and Eureka No. 5. Here’s another thing to be aware of: n Casual fans will notice there are 13 weight classes this year instead of 15. The result will likely mean less byes and forfeits at the state tourney, which means more wrestling. Last May the MHSA took action and reduced the weight classes after a proposal from the state’s coaches recommending the change. Among other things, coaches looked at participation numbers on the upper and lower end of the spectrum. Essentially, the weight divisions of 98 and 106 pounds fans saw at last year’s state tourney were grouped into 103 this year and 195 and 220 were pared to 205. The reaction to the change has been positive throughout the season said state tournament director Brian Michelotti of the MHSA. “We heard very little feedback on it,” he said. “Usually when that is the case, the adjustment was a good adjustment. According to what I’ve heard, people are pleased with it. It is a good move for the level of competition we have across our state and a little more in line with the number of wrestlers we have across our state based on our school’s participation levels.”
