THE GREAT DEPRESSION’S IMPACT ON AMERICAN LIVES The Great Depression was a hard time in american history. It lasted from about 1929 to 1939. The Great Depression impacted many americans because they were forced out of work, Many became sick or prone to illness, and created an even greater disadvantage for African Americans trying to get ahead in society.

Many americans were forced out of work for many reasons. At the height of the Great Depression, about 1 in 4 people did not have a job. The GDP went down by about half its original size. Also, many farmers lost their jobs because they over cultivated their land making it a “Dust Bowl”.

Illness Many people got sick or were prone to illness. People could not feed themselves and were more susceptible to disease and in the shantytowns called “Hoovervilles” people were in close proximity so people were even more susceptible to the diseases.

The Great depression caused and created an even greater disadvantage for African Americans trying to get ahead in society. This is true because in 1932 almost half of African Americans were out of work. Lynchings increased 20 from 1932 to 1933 [a lynch means “to put to death (as by hanging) by mob action without legal approval or permission.”]

In conclusion, the Great Depression impacted people by forcing them out of work, creating sickness and an even greater disadvantage for African Americans.
