WWII IN RUSSIA 1939- 1945 Battle of Stalingrad The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle in World War Two which was the successful defense of the city of Stalingrad, Russia. This battle lasted from July 17, 1942 to February 2, 1943 and stopped the Germans from advancing t the rest of the Soviet union. With over 2,000,000 deaths, this was one of the bloodiest battles in history.
Some other Major Battles • Operation Barbarossa: Summer 1941 • Moscow and Rostov: Autumn 1941 • Soviet counter-offensive: Winter 1941 • Don, Volga, and Caucasus: Summer 1942 • Kursk: Summer 1943
How WWII Affected The Soviet Union In World War Two, the death toll in the soviet union was a huge 25,000,000 people, most of whom were fighting to keep their home from the invading Germans. Many of these deaths took place in the famous Battle of Stalingrad, which was a battle for control of Stalingrad, Russia. In this battle alone, more than 2,000,000 lives were lost, making it the bloodiest battle in modern history. ("World War II Casualties of the Soviet Union." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 10 May 2017. Web. 02 June 2017.,) WWII played an important role in the history of Russia because some of the most famous snipers in WWII came from Russia. WWII caused destruction of much of the Soviet Union, and forced young people everywhere to put everything aside to join the military. During this tragic war, much of the Soviet Union was turned into rubble. When the Germans invaded, they were looking to continue expanding their territory and to gain even more power and control. At first, Hitler’s armies had complete control and were marching through Russia. In the first week, about 150,000 Soviet soldiers were either dead or wounded. After multiple 1

months of terrible, ruthless battle, the tides started to turn and the Soviets started to gain momentum, but this was after millions of lives had been lost and towns and cities had been completely destroyed. (Rees, Laurence. "History - World Wars: Hitler's Invasion of Russia in World War Two." BBC. BBC, 30 Mar. 2011. Web. 02 June 2017.). According to the nationalinterest.com, the Russian vs. German war was “the most horrific war of all time.” Although when the Germans invaded Russia it eventually changed the entire outcome of World War Two, the destruction that was a result of it was almost unbearable. The Snipers in WWII were silent killers who mainly targeted German officials and went on important missions. One of the most important missions that a group of Snipers accomplished took place during the Battle of Stalingrad. In November of 1942 a group of snipers and military officials were sent to capture the Commander in Chief of the German 6th army. The mission was successful, and this put an end to the Battle of Stalingrad (Pages 209-220). Some of the most famous snipers in the world come from Russia, like Ivan Mihailovich Sidorenko who killed about 500 german soldiers or officials.Without these Snipers in World War Two, the turnout could have ended very differently. Along with all of the destruction of Russia, the war also forced young people not only in Russia, but everywhere to give up on there dreams and join the military. Children had to stop going to school and getting an education because it was dangerous and troops were needed to fight off the Germans. Officially, you needed to be at least 18 to join the military, but children were used to gun down enemy planes, get resources to the troops and many other dangerous jobs. Millions of innocent children were killed, injured, or separated from their families during the war. In the book, “Sniper” by James Riordan,

Tania Belova, a 16 year old Russian girl was forced to stop pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse. In the book, a military official asks Tania, “‘What is your duty soldier?” Tania replies, “Anti-aircraft guns, Comrade Major-General. But I’d like to be a nurse.” (page 46) She has to deal with the fact that she has to protect her country, but she would much rather be saving people’s lives. In conclusion, WWII played a very important role in the history of Russia because some of the most famous snipers fought in the war, WWII caused devastating destruction of the Soviet Union, and it forced people all around the world to put everything aside to join the military. Something that can relate to the destruction in Russia is what is going on in Syria. One website states, “ Whole neighborhoods have been leveled by targeted explosions as well as marketplaces and hospitals, and many of the city’s inhabitants live without electricity, running water or fuel.” (Mourby, Adrian. "Where Are the World's Most War-damaged Cities?" The Guardian. Guardian News and Media, 17 Dec. 2015. Web. 04 June 2017.)This was what it was like for millions during World War Two. All of these events have and will change the entire history and future of Russia, and the entire world.
