Neil Armstrong and his Eagle pin
Neil armstrong was a boy scout. He was in fact the rank eagle, the highest rank in boy scouts. When he said the eagle has landed there were different meanings of this message. Neil had his eagle scout badge in his pocket while walking on the moon and saying the famous quotes “the eagle has landed.” The space race was between the United States and Russia and the ultimate goal was to get someone to the moon. Russia got a man to orbit earth (Yuri Gagarin) but the Americans got 3 men to the moon before the Russians. The Space Race is an important part to American history because it gave us new knowledge, started NASA, and was the first step to exploring space and other planets.

The space race gave the U.S and the world lots of new knowledge. In order to get into space you must travel at 17,600 miles per hour or about 5 miles per second. That is a piece of knowledge the space race gave us. We launched satellites and without the experience we had from the space race of… space we would not be able to launch satellites and that would cause there to be no GPS, and no internet. Communication would be compromised. We would not have known if some theories are true. On the moon we dropped a hammer and a feather (Galileo's theory.) We also learned about new liquid propellants used for launching rockets. In the book October sky there is a whole chapter for sonny and his friends getting a new propellant. Zinc-o-shine. Pg 312-335. Sonny and his friends get moonshine and mix it with zinc and sulfur to make a new fuel. we got much knowledge from launching rockets. That knowledge 1 we got from it evolved into technological advances. An example of this would be the solar panel.

NASA also invented many things. The space race influenced the start of NASA. In July 21, 1958 NASA was founded for the purpose of helping the U.S win the space race and eventually explore beyond the moon. It was founded as a result of the Russian satellite called sputnik being launched and orbiting earth on October 4, 1957. The government also needed a federal organization just for space exploration and so they made one. NASA conducted the mercury and gemini projects. The mercury project was a one man astronaut program but gemini was a 2 man program. This shows how the U.S needed NASA for the space race. NASA was vital to the U.S winning the space race and getting men on the moon.

NASA evolved and eventually was exploring beyond the moon. Eventually we sent out many space probes and then we sent one to Mars to explore. NASA went beyond the moon and onto mars. They didn't just send probes to orbit the planet though, they sent out rovers. They would explore the surface of the planet. New horizons, a space probe, reached to pluto in 2014. NASA build new horizons. NASA also helped build the international space station. NASA has done so much beyond just landing on the moon on many occasions and you can find this information at NASA's website. Explain how the evidence supports your analysis: Pluto and mars and the ISS are much more advanced and we explored beyond the moon all the way to pluto. We reached beyond the moon and the moon was only a first step. The Space Race is an important part to American history because it gave us new knowledge, started NASA, and was the first step to exploring space and other planets.
