Harriet Tubman was the most famous conductor of the Underground Railroad. In a decade she guided over 300 slaves to freedom; abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison thought she deserved the nickname “Moses”. She worked hard to save money to return and save more slaves.
A secret railroad For most slaves freedom was only a dream but for 30,00s slaves this dream came true with the help of the underground railroad and they were finally able to breath free air. Before Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation slavery was prominent in the south the only way that slaves could have a free life was if they escaped using the underground railroad. In the 1850s and 1860s, Canada became a popular home for slaves fleeing the horrors of plantation life in the South. In all 30,000 slaves fled to Canada Many with the help of the underground railroad , while the journey itself was dangerous one of the most dangerous parts was the slave catchers that were sent to catch them. If they made to Canada the life they was very different to their life in the U.S The slaves used the underground railroad to escape without it they probably would not be able to be free .The underground railroad was not a railroad it we s series of safe houses ran by people who did

not support slavery. One of the most important parts of the underground railroad was black sympathizers they would put secret areas in their house to hide slaves and sometimes they would give them weapons to defend themselves. If the people that helped slaves were caught there would be severe punishments such as death in 1856 the law passed that “ If anyone who assisted a fugitive slave, black or white will be put to death!” a . In order to keep the underground railroad a secret they developed a code “Supporters of the Underground Railroad used words railroad conductors employed everyday to create their own code as secret language in order to help slaves escape”. The words were commonly used on railroads. Some words they used included, agent , baggage and conductor an agent was a person that harbored slaves.Baggage were slaves that were expected and a conductor was a person that transported people. While slaves had many people to help them escape they had to do a lot on their own in order to stay in the right direction they used the stars to direct them. Because slaves traveled a night so they could be hidden they had to use stars to direct thought the night one of the constellation they used to point them north was the big dipper. One of the best clues they could use to find north was to locate the North Star. The North Star is also called Polaris. Unlike other stars, it never changes position. It always points to the north.this shows that there was many was that the slaves used it to escape One of the most dangerous parts of the trip to freedom was the slave catchers along the way. slave catchers were people that would look fro run away slaves These slaves catchers would use “… Brutal tactics to return the salves such as whips and dogs” In the north slave catching was very frowned upon but in the south if you “did not take back a slaves you will be punished .” Even when slaves entered Canada they were not see slave catchers would try to take them back to work at the plantation. Although Canada was like heaven for sales their life their was very different. teachers would carry guns for protection. In order to live the slaves would have to start allover they would build farms and villages “The slaves would have to rebuild their entire lives.” Even thought they were in free Canada the slaves
