Important Dates
Adolf Hitler was responsible for The Holocaust. He had a vision of creating a superior race in Europe. To achieve his goal he systematically rounded up jews and other people he found undesirable and had them sent to concentration camps where they were ultimately killed 1
The Holocaust began in 1933, when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and ended in 1945, when the Nazis were defeated by he Allied powers.
Concentration Camps The Nazis constructed more than 40,000 camps. The camps were used for various purposes which included forced labor, where Jews worked long hard days and were fed very little. Sadly, the primary purpose of the concentration camps was to murder Jews. More than three million Jews were killed in concentration camps. Auschwitz, one of the most infamous concentration camp complexes, had four gas chambers and killed up to 6000 Jews each day.
“I believe in the sun even when it is not shining. I believe in love even when I cannot feel it. I believe in God even when he is silent. -Written on a cellar wall during The Holocaust
RESCUE AND THE END OF WWII With the end of WWII also came the end of the Holocaust. The Allied Forces liberated the remaining survivors from the various concentration camps throughout Europe. Most of the survivors were weak and needed intense medical attention. Many others died within a few days of being freed. The emotional toll on the survivors was immeasurable. While most were excited to be reunited with families, many felt guilty for surviving when they had lost so many friends and loved ones.
