June 5, 2017 or shine, and were given table scraps for food. Slaves were also treated brutally at the slightest mistake, there owners would whip them, beat them, execute them and rape also commonly took place. They were also denied an education so they could not read or write making it harder for them to understand things, and it also made it more complicated in there attempts to escape their “captivity”. Harriet Ann Jacobs, is A former slave that escaped slavery, one of her famous quotes is, “death is better than slavery.” this is because of the torture she had to go through while in slavery like beatings, and being over worked.

Slaves Who Escaped, or Were Freed Lived Better Lives. After the long laborious work of escaping slavery, or being freed, many slaves settled down in the north starting farms, businesses and raising families that were safe from being sold. Many slaves got jobs that pay them unlike slavery and got an education in school, causing african american writers like Harriet Ann Jacobs. they no longer had to eat table scraps and were not beaten like they were before. there life was indeed better, and more free than before. “I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated states, and parts of states, are and henceforth shall be Free.” Abraham Lincoln, 1862. this is a quote from Abraham Lincoln when he announced that all slaves in the union were now free. this new law was a big part of how the civil war started, it is also a moment were all slaves in the south felt like life was going to get better for them.

The Northerners Thought Slavery Was Wrong And Helped Them Escape.

the northerners helped out the slaves a great deal with a system called the underground railroad, this made it safer and easier for slaves to escape the south and head north towards freedom. the underground railroad was a network of safe houses and routs that lead them north. the safe houses were set up by locals, they would take slaves that were on the run and hide them from the authorities, they would also feed them and tell them were the next safe house was, and tell them how to get there. this would continue until they got on “free soil”. the underground rail road was like a very long, intense scavenger hunt, but instead of a surprise at the end there was freedom. the northerners also helped them keep there freedom in the civil war. like in the battle of Gettysburg, there were 3,155 soldiers kill and many more missing and injured. sure the battle of Gettysburg and the civil war were not just about african american freedom, but it certainly played a big roll in it. the citizens of the north, in towns like Gettysburg believed that slavery was wrong and must be stopped. For example Will, the main character in the book, Will at the battle of Gettysburg, 1963, by Laurie Calkhoven, thought, “I felt sorriest for the negroes. it seemed every other week they had to sling everything they owned onto there backs and hightail it up baltimore street for the woods beyond cups hill.” and “I believed that slavery was evil through and through”. these quotes show civilians opinions on slavery.

In Conclusion. Slavery is wrong and is worth fighting against. History shows People in slavery were treated like lesser beings, And how slaves who escaped, or were freed lived a better life, also also how the northerners thought slavery was wrong and helped them escape. the civil war was very important to there freedom, and if we had lost, who knows, slavery might still exist in the north, and america might be more than one country.
