1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS

Architectural Design Studio: Earth introduces architectural spatial systems as a designed and synthesized project. To bring the architectural project into existence, the project is developed through three different design practices, each related to a specific architectural tectonic, which are: - Point/Line/Plane: explored as it affects the ground surface. - Frame/In fill: explored as it affects above ground. - Mass: explored as an underground spatiality. Each of these practice is expected to introduce technique, form or idea which will affect the outcome the final project related to a Secret Space.

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE For this practice I started with the idea of the transformation between the point, line and plane. Such as the process of a point transformed to a line when moving, and when a line moves it transformed into a plane. I also think that the movement of the line can be different, which creates different shapes of plane. And when the planes jointed together, they creates a volume. Because the planes are different, the appearances of the volume are very different, which creates a unique type of structure.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL

In this practice I am exploring how the movement of the object can be expressed using the frame and infill concept. For this model I tested the effect of explosion as I think it is one the most dramatic effect of movement. The explosion is expressed by making the speed of the movement visible, the thickness of the stick represents how fast the object is travelling. And as it is an explosion, the ground is broken by it which makes it a structure over the ground.

1.3 MASS

At the beginning of the project, I was inspired by the present shown in the image, it is an underground station which has a large amount of concrete beams above it. I think this effect have strength the feeling of the underground for the users as people can see there are many structure hang above them. Another idea I wanted to put in to the design is the idea of surprising people when they entering the site, which was mentioned in the tutorial. This drawing is a combination of both of the ideas. When people coming down from the ground, the entrance is getting narrower, people may have the idea that they are entering a very compact space. But when they finally enter the structure, the large open space may surprise them as it is different from what they expected. The tubes are similar idea to the concrete beams, but I think it can enhance the feeling of underground even more.

2.0 CONCEPT MASS 3D MODEL 2.1 DIGITIZATION & Design Development Intro

The purpose of this project is trying to represent the 2 dimensional idea in the mass project into 3 dimensional, in order to have a clearer vision of the actual effect. The method of achieving this is to use 3D printing. However the size of the printing is limited at 6mm * 6mm * 6mm, so the effect of the final model can be limited.

2.2 OUTCOME

Due to the limited size of 3D printing, only half of the object was crafted, and the tubes that enhances the underground feeling cannot be printed. However the effect of the entrance can be well represent as it can create a mystery feeling for the visitor.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE

The site chosen for the project is the hill that located near the entrance of the island, the reason that I this specific area is chosen is I found it has some interesting factors. For every time I pass by the site I release that there are always some people are either going up, or already standing on the hill. I think this is because the site has some characteristic that can attract people’s attention. This is one of the aspect of the site that I wanted to take advantage in the project design. Another aspect that the site has is that it can draws people’s curiosity about what is the hill for or what is behind the hill, this I think is also the reason that people want to discover the site.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN

For this part I was trying to recreate the curious feeling when people is passing by the hill in a more –three-dimensional way. Though this sketches I found that sometimes the simplest shape can great the feeling of curiosity most effectively, for instance if a single box is placed on the table people may wondering who put it there and what is inside it. This concept is very similar to the characteristic of the hill located on Herring Island.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Taking the previous concept, I wanted to start with a very simple shape – a cube. Here I took the idea from the frame & Infill practice and used the cube that is broken. This creates an appearance that when people see the box from the back, they can’t see anything. But when they are attached by the curiosity and come to the other side of the box, they will discover there is a secret sits inside of it. I started it with the idea of infinite boxes within the box, and it gradually turns and eventually people cannot see if there is more boxes inside. I think in this way the secret is hidden inside the cube and cannot be reviewed. However I found this idea to be very predictable, then I was inspired by the precedent call the ‘The Box’, which is a cubical building that also have an opening, but the opening is blocked by a glass. I think in t his way it gives people the vision of it inside but not letting entering it is another type of secrete.

3.4 FINAL DESIGN MODEL For the final design, I designed to combine the two simple shape in the sketching, and also include the idea from the precedent. The structure is located at the back of the hill, when people feel curious about the site and climb up or go around, they will discover the first secret, which the structure is hidden beneath. As the structure is semitransparent, people can see there is light and movement inside the cube, which I think can continued to make people feel curious. This leads to the main idea of the secret. For this structure I am trying to making people constantly to feel the curiosity when they are discovering something, because I think one of the good thing about secret is the feeling when discovering it. So I created multiple similar but different ‘secret’ for people to discover when they access the structure.

4.0 REFLECTION This subject introduced me to make models using more professional digital software, and how to express the ideas using physical models. During each practice, I had feeling that each time I am thinking differently, and improving by the feed backs. I also learnt that get inspired by precedent is an important aspect during the process of design. The first challenge I faced during our working process was to learn to use the new digital software, and using it to design the model in a limited period of time. This could cause us to spend less time on the design process, and also limited the design if we do not know the method of creating it using the software. Another challenge that I had was making the physical models, sometimes the outcome of the model did not achieve the expectation for the idea. This may because of the lack of experience of choosing material, or the idea itself, and in order to fix it can be time consuming. Though varies practice, I found myself getting better at dealing with this questions. Although the design process was long and full of challenges, I found myself enjoying the process and pleased when the outcome is satisfying. This subject was a hard but interesting and useful experience, and I look forward more in the future.
