Landscape + Architecture Portfolio

hello My name is Billy Guarino. I have always been inspired by artful and progressive design. While learning about landscape architecture previously, and now architecture, I have developed a passion for making. With my background in grading and drainage and my understanding of landscape plasticity, I have naturally done well at visualizing landform within my projects, and you may see this in my work. I am most excited to merge the two disciplines (landscape + architecture) in my work at the University of Oregon and during my career going forward. This portfolio edition embodies my best projects during my undergraduate degree at Cal Poly Pomona, my work from the University of Oregon thus far, as well as landscape architecture + urban design with SWA Group and C2 Collaborative. Work is organized chronologically.

Re s u m e Introduction

Experience

Design is crucial to changing lives with a positive impact. My interests lie in the urban, the site, and the building scale. I am especially interested in ecological architecture and systems thinking. During my career, I am determined to expand my knowledge through design exploration, education, research, and practice.

S PA T I A L T A X O N O M Y This studio explored the potential of the former rail yard officially known as Los Angeles State Historic Park, better known locally as The Cornfields. We begun with an intense mapping drawn to combine a spectrum of information gathered from site research. This graphic compilation then informed an exploration of site specific landscape spatial types, which were then digitally fabricated.

BRIDGING THE GAP In response to a day and era where cities fragment positive human experience and our important connection to ecosystems, Bridging the Gap allows users to take part in informal learning methods of ecological exploration while also connecting the isolated neighborhood of ‘Frogtown’ back to the city fabric. In a historically rich riverfront environment, families and children of all ages can now wander through a reactivated Bowtie Parcel to make discoveries about native Los Angeles River ecology, local geography, and the bioremediation techniques necessary for an existing brownfield. 03 AERIAL URBANISM There are many problems associated with the Los Angeles Region’s traditional habit of sprawl. due to the lack of open space this habit creates in West Hollywood, here patterns of city-making are transformed by utilizing barren open spaces as opportunity for an enlarged public realm. This process is achieved by promoting vertical density in response to an ever-changing West Hollywood and a projected population growth that is unreasonable under the current housing supply. Group project from Cal Poly Pomona. All graphics and 3D model shown here were produced by me. Design and narrative ideas were part of a joint effort by Chris Anderson, Ivan F Velåzquez, Jeff Palmer, and myself. SITE ANALYSIS AIRPORT INFLUENCE Bangalore International Airport resides just 00 meters to the East of the site. An influence which drastically effects density distribution by creating lower height restrictions (shown on the map in darker zones). As each zone focusing away from the center of the site gets lighter, density in these areas is able to increase.

I came on to this project immediately after the competition was awarded to SWA Group for concept master plan on 292-acres + schematic design for phase one. On Eco City we worked through Master Planning, Urban Design, and Landscape Architecture concerns. At a rapid pace and on a team of three, the project was completed in only seven months after the competition.

06 WHITEAKER LIBRARY As part of the Graduate Track I introductory design program sequence at University of Oregon, our studio assignment was to design a small community library for the Whiteaker Neighborhood of Eugene, OR. This project was driven by contextual relationships and edge conditions. Conceptually the building took on a form which spoke to the combination of landscape and architecture, successfully providing interstitial outdoor spaces throughout the site that were in dialog with the building. Together as one, the massing of the building and the landscape intervention was derived from site forces. All the volumes are connected by a central corridor as well as a mezzanine which winds its way in and out of the building. We were assigned to utilize a heavy timber construction system. The library was to be a max of two stories and the program included a cafe, maker space, and a kid’s zone Faculty advisor: Peter Keyes

Custom Window Detail

07 THE SHED Objective: To design a light wood framed summer cabin and a custom window detail. Through a rigorously iterative process we designed this cabin to be dynamic and exciting to explore. With the bunk beds located on the upper loft area, the entire ground floor is open for more furniture or small activities. Four windows exist on the cabin, two identical windows on each side which have a folding shutter that opens to become a horizontal shade and canopy. This window is operated by two pulleys to help with leverage as shown in the custom detail. The window on the back of the building has the same function except it is one foot longer due to the sloping wall condition—enabling us to tie the window headers into a datum across the cabin. Designed with Joe Shaner

connected void

As Italian piazzas and social gathering are a big part of Italian culture, the central ground floor of the PDX Art Academy is flexible to accommodate lectures, art installations, social events and the impromptu social interaction. Conceptually the building brings in the park atmosphere across the street on the ground floor. This is experienced spatially by the vertical void through the atrium, effectively connecting the above, below, and in-between. The building includes eight small studios (200 square feet), six medium sized studios (300 square feet), eight large studios (400 square feet), a small library, dining facilities, a reception hall, workshops, classrooms, galleries, and a cafe-bookstore which is on the ground floor. 09 N OYO C E N T E R F O R MARINE SCIENCE Once a lumber mill, the site in Fort Bragg, CA is now being gifted back to the community. My project serves as a springboard for ecologies to revive themselves within a landscape that has been exploited. In addition to the terrestrial damage, the bull kelp which once dominated these waters has severely been diminished, therefore forcing marine species to find a new home. This loss of habitat is caused by the invasion of an exotic and invasive species, the purple urchin. The Noyo Center for Marine Science is involved in cutting edge research along the west coast, and is the only marine research center north of Monterey, CA. The program calls for the storage whale bones, one being an orca and the other a blue whale. The program also calls for research labs, and housing, however the focus of my project is a discovery center and museums for the whale bones. Faculty Advisor: Hajo Neis

Often, mass dieoffs of the plants are observed during El Niño events, temporary changes in the climate of the Pacific Ocean near the equator which can produce dramatic effects on local and world climate. As the world ocean continues

to warm due to global climate change, a decline in the range and abundance of Bull Kelp is expected. Because all kelps require clean, clear water to thrive, coastal runoff and pollution are also endangering the species.” -Oregon Coast Aquarium
