Introduction Sony’s Spressa™ USB external CD-RW Recorder/Player is a high performance external peripheral unit. It is connected to the main system by Universal Serial Bus (USB) Interface. Its functions include recording and playback on re-writable (RW) compact discs (CD’s). It provides write-once CD media and can read mass-produced manufacturer-stamped CD’s. The USB interface is compatible with PC as well as MacIntosh computer systems that have USB Interface ports. The ‘hot pluggable’ Spressa USB connector allows it to be installed or ejected while the system is on and operating. Note that the drive should not be disconnected during active data transfer.

The USB Interface The Universal Serial Bus (USB) Interface cable connects much like a wall outlet telephone jack. Unlike many other interface peripherals, there are no user parameters that require setting by the end user, such as ID numbers, IRQ setting changes or terminator speeds. The installation of the driver software will control all communications and settings between the device and your computer system.

CD-R and CD-RW Compact-Disc Recordable (CD-R) Media are permanent recordings that may not be erased once recorded. However, new data may be added to the disc until the entire disc is full. This format is used for distribution or for data iterations that do not need to be updated. Spressa USB writes and reads CD-R media read by standard CD ROM drives and CD Players. Compact Disc Re-Writable (CD-RW) media may be written to and then re-written many times with new data sets. CD-RW format is good for safeguarding and transporting ongoing backup of data that changes over time or needs to be sent to an older CD Read Only Memory (ROM) drive. CD-RW discs have a lower cost per megabyte than other types of media, but the initial disc cost is higher. Spressa USB also writes and reads CD-RW media.

Applications CD-R and CD-RW formats are used for different purposes. Both formats can be used with the Spressa USB. Some interchange limitations exist with the CD-RW format. Figure 1 shows typical applications for both types of discs. Figure 1: Data Distribution CD-R CD-RW
