Differences

Jails and prisons have many differences. Jails are more for the county level where offenders have not commit serious crimes. Prisons are for the serious offenders who commit murder and crimes in that nature. Depending on the degree of the crime, depends on where the criminal may end up and the time they spend there. Prisons and jails are also funded in various ways. The purpose of this paper is to discuss these various differences between jails and prisons. Jails and prisons have different time frames for housing their inmates. Jails are typically meant for individuals either pending arraignment, conviction, sentencing, or awaiting trial (Seiter, 2011, p.73). Jails are also commonly run or overseen by the local sheriff. These individuals could be waiting to be transferred to prisons. And usually an offense that has a normal term that is less than a year is served in a jail (Seiter, 2011, p.78). Prisons are for sentences lasting longer than a year.
