Setting priorities is an important practice to have in all walks of live. With so little time to dedicate to all of our goals; it is a vital step that we step back and decide which tasks are more important than others. When involved in the business world, the practice of prioritizing and goal setting is that much more significant. “As a manager, your real concern is setting goals and keeping your staff focused on achieving them. (Crom) While working as a statistics analyst for the United States Navy back in 2009, I was able to see the idea of goal setting and prioritizing put into place multiple times. Each opportunity to learn about the step was a great reminder as to why they are needed when working to reach a level of success. Goal setting must be completed on both large and small scale measures. Many organizations set goals for the company as a whole to be met during their year. These goals are often addressed with monthly parameters to ensure that those on staff are meeting the steps that have been placed in front of them. For example, the Stats and Information department in which I was a part of placed goals for the entire department. I remember the goal that required the staff to have a quick turnover time when it comes to inventory usage being reported from warehouse to our higher echelon. Information was recorded on a weekly basis to help us understand just how close we were coming to our goal. Knowing that goal was in placed helped us work together as a staff to reach the point of success. When we knew what our implanted goal was, we created a sound strategy that helped us hit that point over time. This is a prime example of how goal setting, tactics and strategy all work together.
