CURSIVE CRUSH With Anne Elser All Levels ARTZ16123 | Saturday & Sunday January 23rd & 24th, 11am – 4:30pm

Description: Celebrate National Handwriting Day by re-learning Cursive Handwriting with Anne Elser at Binders in Buckhead! The speed of digital communication today has gifted us with more time to pursue things we love. But somewhere along the way, we’ve forgotten how good it feels to use a writing instrument to record our thoughts for ourselves and to those we love. Writing, and the time it takes to produce letterforms, is good for the body, mind, and spirit. It is also a gift to the recipient, who holds your elevated thoughts in their hands, literally, and with far more consideration and pause than through a text or email. The child of Spencerian calligraphy, Cursive Handwriting is not forgotten, because we have made a table for you to come join us in two fun and joyous days of lettering. Students will learn (or re-learn!) capitals and lower case letterforms, through formal exercises in structure, rhythm and flow - all standards similar to those taught not that long ago. Day one is spent on spacing and lower case characters. Day two we’ll dance with capitals and dive right into an envelope addressing/letter writing project. Both days we’ll take an hour break for lunch. This workshop is suitable for calligraphers, tweens, and all adults.

Poetic Pen

With Heather Held 2 Sessions | $120 ARTZ1632 | Saturday March 19th 10-4 & Sunday March 20th 11-4

Description

Italian Hand is an elegant mercantile script that reaches back to the first decade of the1600’s and was prominently used until the mid 1860’s. It is a narrow and graceful hand, made distinctive through its unusual use of shading. Often called “blob top or club top” lettering, this hand evolved out of italic hands and appears throughout history in various forms. Although it was historically marketed as the simplest of all script hands, it can look confusing until it is demystified. The lowercase forms are very simple to learn. The capitals are varied and can take the form of Standard Roundhand or the more complex reverse shaded letterforms. Throughout The Poetic Pen class, we will simplify the capital forms while striving to perfect the shading on the lowercase forms. We will explore various European influences of the capital letters. The end goal of this class is not to copy a historic hand but to help unlock its mysteries and bring it forward into this century. Historic practitioners of this hand had a playful approach to it. The student will create their own unique expression of this elegant hand. The practice of Italian Hand will help lighten your touch as you approach other script hands. This workshop welcomes any skill level from novice to advanced.

Textured Photography with John Gronwall 1 Session | $120 ARTZ1630 | March 12th 2016, Saturday 1pm - 4pm

Description

During this workshop, I will be demonstrating and students will participate in combining digital photography prints, Golden Gel Mediums, and Golden Digital Grounds to create one-of-a-kind photo artwork prints. Combining traditional digital photographs with nontraditional finishing techniques will be used to create textured photography. We will take your prints further and give each print a painterly quality. We’ll use Golden products on various surfaces, from rice paper and fabric to aluminum, to create texture, highlights, shadows and greater depth to enhance the photographic images. Note: We will NOT be printing at this workshop. There will be a demonstration on preparing surfaces for inkjet printing. Surface techniques: • Printing on thin papers - prepare Unryu or rice paper for inkjet printing; • Inkjet transfer to watercolor paper; • Create a skin (like a decal) to apply to non-absorbent surfaces such as Plexiglas or metal; • Textured surfaces on dimensionally stable materials (Tyvek, aluminum, and spunbound polyester); • Inkjet transfer to wood to create a fresco; • I encourage participants to bring inkjet photographs that you can transform into a textured photograph. I will also provide inkjet photograph prints for the students to experiment with.
