A major trend is in making - redefined Indian ethnic aesthetics. Watch out!

Star pieces that are true to fall/winter easy-wear trends.

Choose what you wear according to your sunsign

EDITOR’S LETTER Hello Readers, While you read this issue, Nina Duvulari, an Indian-American who won the title of Miss New York, has also been titled Miss America. And while she faces a lot of racial slur and bigotry by her fellow Americans, who like her, are ethnic European or Caucasian or African, we wish her a fabulous journey ahead as she donates her winnings to a charity for brain and cognitive development. This issue is inspired by the Lakme Fashion Week 2013 Festive/Winter that just got over in August and its deconstruction and re-definition of Indian classics. (We definitely are on to something here and this is a big trend in the making, so we are keeping our eyes peeled!) With designer shows such as those presented by Nikhil Thampi, Payal Singhal, Amit Aggarwal and a round up with the spectacular finale – and maybe his best-ever – by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the Week redefined sarees, achkans, lehengas and churidars. Want to see how? Turn over the pages to our cover story “Tradition Redefined” to read how. LFW ’13 F/W also dictated a few changes and highlights in the beauty trends. Smoky eyes stood out, as did high drama. We have incorporated a few videos to help you achieve these in-trend looks. Have a read and enjoy yourself! Do remember to tell us your feedback! finition of Indian ethnic wear was flavour of LFW ’13 Festive/Winter nd it is a major trend in making. Aparajita Mukherjee decodes.

Sabyasachi’s models walked own the ramps for what was nale of Lakme Fashion Week ’13 r/Festive, everyone in the audience that a new style sensibility had borne and a big trend was in making. What Sabyasachi, with vintage sensibilities, did along other designers at LFW with d aesthetics was deconstruct reinvent the classics from the c wardrobe and give it a spin s head. For this reason, LFW ’13 r/Festive could well be called the nstructed-and-Rethought-Week.

abyasachi’s models walked the ramp wearing a four-piece churidaar with a churi pant, skirt, a shirt and jacket. He also matched his lace sarees with tee-blouse for a look that was chic, elegant and vintage. Achkans and sherwanis for women, quilted skirts and jackets finished his jaw-dropping collection. His very-royal collection was provided a sharp contrast by Nikhil Thampi’s Kathakali-inspired gold-dominated collection. Thampi rethought the classics into a sexier version of itself and matched a gorgeous and rich lehenga with a kimono choli. Sarees took unprecedented shapes under his pencil and got a sheer skirt with the whole leg to be seen or a knotted belt and belt in another. Payal Singhal reinterpreted the saree with a highlow hemline tunic before letting out another model wearing a half-lehenga, complete with a thigh-high slit. Krishna Mehta took the very-traditional sharara and made a suit out of it by matching it with a structured, high-neck jacket of Indian weave.

mit Aggarwal – the designer who is known for futuristic designs – brought on stage fusion lehenga, poncho lehenga and edgy blouses with mermaid skirts. Aggarwal’s creations could be the star of a Bollywood production of Star Trek with high style sensibilities. They were a mix of femininity with a hint of strength and machismo. Metallic strips formed the mainstay of the collection and was mixed with fabrics such as georgette, tulle and velvet – strong enough to hold the weight of the embellishments. By Aggarwal’s own admission, the collection was quite futuristic and was his envisioning of what Indian couture could look like one day. Another futuristic spin on the saree was from the drawing board of Little Shilpa who shortened the hemline to create a skirt out of the saree along with a sash and a shirt for a preppy look. Shilpa’s collections might not score high on their wearability but are a frivolity to look at with lots of interest to them. Her collection had the distinct vibe of a future-meet-tribal look. Real creativity for those who dare to take fashion risks.

MTV VMA Awards 2013 are being spoken about for reasons which have mostly got to do with twerking and tongue-lolling. In the light of which, whowore-what got wholly neglected. Anyways, here we are, even if it’s tad late. Gaga looked demure (as compared to her other appearances). Selena Gomez sizzled in a one-breasted Versace. Swift brought in the old-world glamous with her bandage dress. Rihanna played it cool in BF denims and a tee matched with a choker. Cyrus channeled the 90s disco girl in a bejewelled ensemble. Perry wore a loud animal-print dress with dentures. Now, what was up with that? (Even RiRi sported a tooth-stud!)
