o every Indian girl, her wedding is the most treasured event - an emotional rollercoaster of excitement, tensity, curiosity, happiness and of course what is an Indian wedding without a few tears! All these add to the dramatic persona of a desi bride. But what tops it all is her appearance, whether she’s in an earthy outfit or an extravagant one, you are simply enthralled by the divine vision of an Indian bride!

In a country like ours, so rich in cultural heritage, each community has its own customs and traditions of marriage, but most contemporary brides have one thing in common – she’s anything but demure! She’s sassy, unconventional and more bombshell than bashful. What we see now is more a fashion lifestyle event than a social celebration. Taking from these vivid changes in culture, we derived two distinctive styles of the new-age bride - one expresses the diversified spirit of a contemporary Indian woman while the other stays true to ethnic culture and design but with a modern twist.

R

ebarun Mukherjee’s – ‘Ba Dastoor’ collection featured at recent Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Fall/Winter 2013 is a combination of elements from the past and the present. Classic ethnic silhouettes are given a contemporary twist with the use of geometric motifs, and are ideal for brides who embody Indian culture but with a modern outlook.

The Colour Story The collection features traditional shades of a ‘big fat Indian wedding’ such as beige, ivory, red, gold and nude tones.

The Contour The collection comprises of traditional sarees with unconventional detailing and flared bridal lehengas with décolletage necklines.

The Drapery Plush tassar silk, viscose silk, matka silk, cotton kora, velvet and aureate embroidery that bring to life the grandeur of the traditional story being told.

Sparkle it with! Intricate jewellery with semi-precious stones and an antique finish will dignify the bridal look. A traditional set handed through generations would be ideal!

This evolutionary change in the desi bride is primarily due to the influence of western culture. From wedding oriented movies such as ‘Bride Wars’ and ‘Monsoon Wedding’ to fashion magazines that keep us updated on the latest in the world of weddings, the Indian bride of today is constantly adapting to fuse the old with the new for a picture perfect affair!
