ART & Culture LAW
Art & Culture Law focuses on many different issues including how works of art should be valued, how to protect intellectual property rights in regards to art, authenticating art, and dealing with stolen art.
BOSTON / ATHENS / MUSE
One of Boston’s nicknames is the “Athens of America.” In Ancient Greece, Athens was known to be the cultural and governmental center - a hub of both artists and lawyers. This corresponds with Muse, an art and culture law firm located in Boston. The firm’s name comes from the Muses, who are the Greek goddesses of the arts, and ties back to the connection between Athens and Boston.
FIRM CULTURE
The firm culture at Muse is very focused on enhancing both the client and staff experience. Relaxing spaces for collaboration between staff are key to allowing them to feel comfortable while ensuring that they are able to get their work done. The use of different types of art throughout the public spaces show clients that Muse cares deeply about their clients’ work and helps to show their experience and expertise with different mediums and styles of art.
Explanation 6
Muse is a 60,000 square foot art and culture law firm located in Boston, Massachusetts, that strives to protect art for its creators and appreciators. This project is designed with the following three main users in mind: Community Involvement Provide art display spaces for local artists Host events for community members Validate authenticity of art-related objects
Client
Artistically-Minded Understand that clients are coming from more of a “right-brain background Think of comfort of clients visiting Balance artistic tendencies with rigid practicalities
Expertise Provide professional experience to clients via a staff of dedicated professionals and specialists
Staff
Efficiency of Spaces Encourage usage and circulation Increase collaboration between 163 staff members Maintain public/private separations without fortifying the office
Firm Culture Capitalize on unique field of law and specialization Encourage the mingling of ideas between staff through the use of art and collaborative spaces
Work-Life Balance Provide organized spaces that are fun yet support work flow Foster feelings of comaraderie through shared spaces increasing interactions between staff members

Axiom LAw Mix of colors but orange is still the primary accent color throughout the space and can be found on some of the ceiling elements, furniture, and accessories
Wood elements in a white room with an orange pop of color used in the cabinetry
Inspiration Possibilities Regarding Color: • Use the same color continuously throughout spaces • A single pop of color in the reception area • Keep breakout spaces fun, but still have a dominant pop of color
Precedent Study #1 10
TL Fine Art Gallery Movable walls on a track system to create different spaces within the space
Furniture and walls are on a physical and figural grid system
Inspiration Possibilities Regarding Art Displays: • Use a grayscale or muted tones in rooms that display art to make the art the focus of the room • Display art on a track system or folding wall system • Make galleries able to expand and contract based on needs
Precedent Study #2 11
Gensler Chicago Pixel wall made up of Velcro dots designed in a computer software that specifies where to place the dots to make a specific image
The dots are in four different shades of gray with the Gensler “G” located in the center of each one
Inspiration Possibilities Regarding Entrance displays: • Feature wall near reception • Grayscale, color, or a mixture of the two • Arranged as faces of artists. famous artwork, or Muse logo • Include logo or an “M” or images of artwork on center of dot
Precedent Study #3 12
With the Art & Culture field, there is the need to constantly transition between the more rigid practical side of the legal world and the more expressive creative side of the artists that Art & Culture lawyers serve. The following design solution seeks to blend together these “left-brain” and “right-brain” fields and mentalities in order to enhance both the client and staff experiences, as well as blend together the rich histories of Boston and Athens. Art is a field of constant exploration and discovery, and the proposed solution taps into that state of wonder to provide opportunities for new discoveries and experiences within the office environment and further help blur the line between two seemingly different worlds of art and law.

The first building looked at was originally two separate brick buildings that have been bridged together.
Advantages Character of the building Brick facade speaks well with historical Boston architecture Older building that has seen a lot of history Validate authenticity of art-related objects
Drawbacks Abundance of Columns Creation of offices that would vary in size Multitude of odd spaces to find creative uses for
This building was quickly abandoned due to the extreme challenges of the existing columns.
Test fit Building #1 20
21
The second building looked at has a more modern facade with four angled sides.
Advantages Building Shape Angled sides give a unique exterior Offices along the sides without any corner offices Opportunity for more dynamic shared spaces in the corners
Drawbacks Layout vs. Module Angled sides made laying out the modules challenging
Although this building would have been a fun backdrop for Muse, its layout paired with the developed module would have required three floors rather than the desired two floors.
Test fit Building #2 22
23
The third building consisted of east and west wings forming an “L shape with the core nestled at an angle where the two wings met.
Advantages Open Build Plate Few columns provide open expanses to design in Module fit nicely on two floors while maintaining desired sizes
Drawbacks Separation of Floors No existing communication stair to encourage interaction between staff on both floors
This building was selected to move forward into the Schematic Design phase due to its openness and ability to accommodate the desired modules within two floors.

The proposed design solution is based on dividing the staff and places between the two floors. An opporunity for greater communication and interaction arises by both dispersing the staff evenly and having one cafe space centrally located rather than several scattered throughout. These interactions allow for the creation of a stronger sense of community among staff members. The floors are divided as follows: First Floor

The proposed design solution locates partner and associate offices along the perimeters of the building and the center. The paralegals and legal administrative assistants (LAAs) are located between the offices, and there are a curator and art historian on each floor. There are no corner offices for any staff members in order to promote a sense of equality. These rooms become shared spaces for the staff members rather than allocated to a few select individuals.

This diagram shows the eye contact between the support staff and the attorneys. This eye contact is important for maintaining the established work flow between those on the legal staff. With the proposed design solution almost every attorney is in direct eye sight of at least one support staff member.

67
The proposed design solution allocates the administrative staff evenly between the two floors with the office administrators centrally located for easy access by all staff members. The mail room is located on the first floor off of the elevator lobby for ease of any and all deliveries to Muse. Another important placement to note is that of Human Resources (HR) being located on the second floor near a small conference room. This placement provides convenient access to a space for private conversations.

The proposed design solution includes “we spaces” dispersed throughout the two floors and among offices and workstations. A “we space” is a shared space that provides staff with the opportunity to collaborate with their coworkers in a few different settings: Conference / Workspace Additional table space for impromptu meetings with coworkers and/or for working in a ‘new’ environment by stepping away from one’s desk for a short while.
