Why Europe needs a European Biotech Week

ut simply, biotechnology is the use of living organisms to develop useful products. Its basic principles have been employed to alter plants and livestock for domestication for thousands of years. In Europe today, however, biotech is either perceived at best as a dream, or at worse as a nightmare.

Most consumers remain only vaguely aware of the biotech products that are helping Europeans live healthier, longer and greener lives. The short list alone includes vaccines, insulin, rare disease therapies, improved crops, detergents for washing at lower temperatures, bio-plastics, cosmetics and biofuels.

Great things of course often come in small packages, and the 2000+ biotech SMEs in Europe are crucial to delivering innovative solutions for our most pressing societal needs. Europe will suffer competitively if we don‘t give the right financial backing to these firms. We hope that the annual EuropaBio Most Innovative Biotech SME Award will go some way towards providing a voice for the sector, and highlight the importance of a supportive regulatory framework to help it flourish.

We cannot afford to let biotech‘s many positive aspects pass consumers by or – even worse – be misunderstood. It is up to our industry to better communicate the benefits of biotech to Europeans. This year we celebrate the first ever European Biotech Week – showcasing this innovative and vibrant sector. Over 60 events took place across the EU during the first week of October, underlining the importance its various fields now play in our lives.

The European Biotech Week will be an annual occurrence in October from now on to emphasise that biotechnology has grown more important than ever to job creation, improving health and creating a more sustainable environment. Anyone with a curious mind, an interest in how we can achieve better health as we grow older, and a cleaner environment is invited to celebrate and learn more about the incredible world of biotechnology and how it evolves each year. Let‘s make the invisible revolution visible!

A Brussels/Amsterdam – EU researchers have joined forces to develop a combined imaging method able to detect structural as well as molecular changes in blood cells from patients with rare anemias. The CoMMiTMenT project, which kicked off in Amsterdam in early October, will receive a5m in funding over the next five years to combine optofluidic micro­scopy and scanning ion­-conductance micro­scopy in a single instrument. Dubbed AµCOSMOS, the device will be used to track molecular biomarkers (such as certain channel proteins) via opto­fluidic micro­scopy, and will also be able to scan for structural changes with scanning ion-conductance microscopy. The eight consortium partners – among them Ionscope Ltd., Epigem Ltd (both UK), Optorobotix Aps (DK), and Arivis GmbH (GER) – will use the non-invasive device for monitoring the effect and ideal dose of new medications on the blood of patients who have hereditary xero­cytosis, over­ hydrated hered­itary stomato­cytosis, familial pseudo­hyperkaliemia, cryohydrocytosis, certain types of sphero­cytosis, hereditary spherocytosis, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and phosphofructo­kinase deficiency. CoMMiTMenT will provide an initial proof-of-principle for some of these anemias, whereas for others (like sickle cell anemia) personalised medical interventions should become available. These will be tested clinically with the aim of replacing the current SOC (splenectomy). 

Brussels – Hurrah for the news that a GM yeast has been developed that can convert crop waste into biofuel! Not just because this is an awesome thing in its own right (which it is), but also because it opens up the intriguing thought that we could start using those rascals to do lots of things that GM-doubters would like. This piece is not technically about something ‘Heard in Brussels‘ – rather a stream of consciousness from the inside of my head – but as my head is in Brussels, that will have to do.

What would we really like GMOs to be able to do? And what would instantly open the door to their warm embrace by people who previously thought that little Petronella would be intellectually stunted if a morsel of food sourced from a GMO passed her lips? Here I am specifically referring to the well-meaning monsters who feed their children organic beetroot-paste sandwiches (ignoring in the process their human rights by denying them actual food).

The brave new world of synthetic bio­logy opens the door to any kind of GM capability that we like, so here‘s a few ideas on how we could sell it as the must-have middle class accessory for the following applications: – By turning that supermarket T-shirt you guiltily bought for a2 into an organic, ethically-produced shirt, handwoven by well-fed adults somewhere sunny that isn‘t falling down, wartorn or underwater – By transforming your electric car from a mobile ‘rainforest resources on wheels‘ into something that has the energy footprint of a teenager on a sofa on a Saturday morning – By enabling your local farming system to produce hummus, tahini, South American wine, and all those other things without which you can‘t have dinner parties, and so have to

ship from the other side of the world, which rather rains on the ‘local produce only‘ parade embodied in that beetroot paste – By converting fashionable gluten and dairy-free yoghurt from a habitat­ destroying, palm-oil containing crime against food into something that makes you thin whilst containing ingredients that you have actually heard of – By turning those delicious prawns from the product of a miserable, polluted swamp on the other side of the world into happy seafood that just fell asleep and was harvested by smiling artisan fishermen from the crystal waters of a tropical lagoon.

That will probably do it. So boffins, rather than focussing on the undoubted evil of reducing use of pesticides and producing nutritionally superior rice, can you focus on all the critical things that blight the life of suburban Europeans? Then we can embrace GM technology, or at least add it to the list of stuff for which we ignore the production process. After all, we do so very much like the product.

Voluntary – for now

London – Sponsors of clinical trials can start to upload summary results of their clinical trials voluntarily into a new version of the EU trials data base EudraCT. The summaries will be displayed in the EMA’s two-year-old Clinical Trials Register (www.clinicaltrialsregister.eu). The registry, which currently gives information on all Phase II-IV trials, but not on seed and Phase I studies, will display the study results after an update at the end of this year. After the database has been upgraded, publication will become compulsory.

MEPs back more control

Strassbourg – The European Parliament has backed stricter controls for the Notified Bodies (NBs) that authorise medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics in the EU. A majority voted to implement post-marketing controls, to make an implant pass compulsory, and to establish a special qualification procedure for NBs preparing to approve high-risk medical devices (see EuroBiotechNews 10/2013). A proposal by rapporteur Dagmar Roth­ Berendt to establish a centralised authorisation procedure for medical devices was not approved.

Limits placed on HES

London – The EMA has confirmed its recommendation (EuroBiotechNews 9/2013) not to use plasma expander hydroxyethyl-starch solutions (HES) in critically ill patients with sepsis or burn injuries due to an increased risk of kidney damage and mortality. However, HES may still be used to treat patients with hypovolemia.

A Luxembourg/Oxford – For the first time, researchers have been able to estimate the total amount of expenditure associated with cancer in the European Union. According to Dr. Ramon Luengo-Fernandez from the University of Oxford (UK), it’s “the first ever comprehensive EU-wide study which allows us […] to make meaningful comparisons between countries.“ His team collated data obtained from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the official statistics office of the European Commission (EURO­ STAT), and national ministries of health and statistical institutes to estimate the total cost of cancer across the bloc. The study revealed that the overall price of cancer healthcare, productivity costs, and cost of informal care from friends and relatives was a126bn in 2009 – the most recent year for which comprehensive data were available.

Published in Lancet Oncology (doi: 10.1016/S1470-2045(13)70442-X), the results also highlight substantial disparities between different countries in the EU in spending on healthcare and drugs for cancer, with Luxembourg and Germany spending the most per patient and Bulgaria spending the least. Overall, expenditure on drugs for cancer accounted for around a quarter of total treatment costs (a14bn). Spending on cancer medications as a percentage of healthcare costs was lowest in Lithuania and highest in Cyprus. Approximately 40% (a51bn) of this was incurred by healthcare systems, with the rest incurred by patients‘ families, friends and society overall. Friends and relatives of people with cancer were estimated to have provided 3 billion hours of unpaid care in total, which was valued at

a23.2bn. Lost productivity due to premature death and illness from cancer was estimated to have cost a52bn.

The researchers also examined the different contribution of the four cancers that in the EU contribute to around half of all new cancer diagnoses and deaths – breast, colo­rectal, lung, and prostate cancer. They discovered that lung cancer had the highest overall cost (a18.8bn), and was responsible for the biggest loss of productivity.

Healthcare costs were highest for breast cancer (a6.7bn, 13% of total cancer-related healthcare costs), largely due to a high rate of spending on drugs. The researchers also emphasised that estimates are conservative, as some categories of healthcare costs – such as screening programmes – were not included due to an inability to obtain data for all of the countries in the study.

Whilst the overall economic burden due to cardiovascular disease in the EU (a195bn) is higher than that for cancer, the cost of productivity losses due to premature death were nearly twice as high for cancer (a43bn vs a27bn), reflecting the higher number of cancer-related deaths in people of working age. Dr. Richard Sullivan from King‘s College London urged “decisionmakers across Europe (to) use this information to identify and prioritise key areas,” pointing out that “more effective targeting of investment may prevent healthcare systems from reaching the breaking point – a real danger given the increasing burden of cancer – and in some countries better allocation of funding could even improve survival rates.“ The study was funded by an “unrestricted education grant“ provided by Pfizer.
