Networking in the area of fine and speciality chemicals will take place in Frankfurt/Main at Chemspec Europe from 31 May – 1 June 2022, the key event of the sector (page 36). Some 250 exhibitors from 28 countries have already confirmed their participation in the event, representing an excellent cross-section of the fine and speciality chemicals industry, with strong involvement of Germany, India, the USA, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Belgium. Tackling the challenges of global warming, International Sustainable Economy Forum (see page 38) is the first event of its kind to bring together all the players involved in promoting a sustainable, climate-friendly economy. The conference is hosted in Munich (27–28 June). ISEF will bring together all stakeholders, regardless of raw materials, methods, and products, working to jointly tackle not only the challenges of climate change but also a reasonable
and feasible transformation to a viable future economy. Another premiere will take place on 7 October in Berlin: Biotech solutions close to the market that secure decarbonisation and better raw material supplies in times of climate catastrophe will be presented by companies of all sizes at Industria Biotec 2022, sorted by sector, and of course the investor side will also be highlighted (p. 44).
What biotech has to offer Europe’s leading partnering conference BIO-Europe (22–24 October) will this year take place as a live event in Leipzig. BIO-Europe (page 46) will be the place to see and be seen for over 4,000 executives to engage in high-level networking, more than 20,000 partnering meetings, strategic panel discussions, and world-class workshops. On top, this year’s event will also feature three days of digital partnering in the week follow-
ing the in-person event (November 2–4, 2022). as Bioeconomy, Green Economy, CO 2 as raw material, “Zero Waste”, Circular Economy / “Cradle to Cradle”, Recycling (mechanical, chemical), Hydrogen Economy, and Industrial Biotechnology, the latter as a potentially gentle and environmentally friendly conversion method. All these efforts are outstanding, useful and necessary. However, none of these strategies are complete and none can constitute a comprehensive guideline for a future viable economy on its own. What is apparently missing, in our view, is an underlying principle or a ‘unifying element’ that combines the positive aspects of all these strategies. This principle can only be the “sustainability” with its three pillars, efficiency, consistency and sufficiency. All approaches must suffice these claims. ISEF provides space for discussion and exchange to scrutinize the different approaches according to the criteria of sustainability, to identify barriers for stakeholders in implementation and to propose measures L to solve them.
