2020 Strategic Vision The Science of Life is YOU The Southern California Cluster is leading the development of The Science of Life like no other place Biocom, at the epicenter of supporting this unique cluster, has focused its 2020 Strategic Vision on Communicating and raising awareness of the exceptional pioneering science and development in this cluster; powering Collaboration among the cluster’s resources and; Accelerating the outcomes achieved by the cluster through its advocacy, mastery programs and networking. The future of The Science of Life will be profoundly impacted by groundbreaking science driven by the Southern California cluster. We are leading the world in areas such as Digital Health, Personalized Medicine and Brain Science and have become the undisputable world center for Genomics. Southern California is making daily breakthroughs in the fields that impact human health in significant ways, including unearthing important clues as to the cause of and potential treatments for Alzheimer’s and other serious diseases and discovering mechanisms in the body and mind that were previously unknown. The confluence of science talent, experienced leadership, world-class research and capital are propelling momentum in Southern California that is accelerating discovery and development of technologies to improve the human experience and our well being. Biocom has developed its five-year 2020 strategic plan to set forth a visionary path for our industry’s next era of growth, including the strategy and tactics for getting there. Biocom’s executive leadership and board of directors will update this plan annually to incorporate newly emerged opportunities and input from our expanding base of members.

Significantly increase local, regional and global visibility around the diverse technology, research and development and sustainable opportunities that Southern California has to offer. Continue to build and strengthen relationships with elected officials, ensuring awareness and knowledge of the evolving Southern California life sciences industry. Utilize the Biocom website and available technology so that member company employees can directly contact policymakers on subjects of immediate interest and concern, to reach current and prospective members, to conduct quarterly surveys within our Advisory and RFP Committees to identify unmet contract areas and procurement needs and to better understand member companies capital development needs. Measurably increase awareness of member to member resources throughout Southern California and highlight the growth, strength, and breadth of services and purchasing group contracts Biocom provides to all members. Expand the 2016 California Life Sciences Workforce Trends report to include more robust data for Southern California. Continue refinement of all newsletters and publications to increase readership and incorporate strategic outside material of interest to Biocom members.

During year one of our expansion into LA County, work on establishing partnerships throughout the Los Angeles life science community and develop introductory marketing, events and business development packages to drive engagement and create synergies across the greater Southern California landscape. Cultivate events with a focus on securing key industry speakers for all programming, educational seminars and conferences. Target various sectors of the overall Biocom membership, increasing the geographic reach of events while ensuing a diverse mix of attendees and robust networking opportunities. Identify and convene stakeholders to begin planning for the first California Life Science Workforce Conference. Develop a better understanding around and create an awareness for human centered design to help companies learn how to humanize technology and improve the patient adoption, adherence and experience. Increase and expand STEM program offerings for all ages throughout Southern California with a focus on disadvantaged youth, including the creation of a Biocom Institute Diversity Committee and identify all of the A’s in our current STEM initiatives as a precursor to the importance of the shift to STEAM. Maximize the Biocom Institute’s leadership position to promote public health and wellness initiatives and create streamlined opportunities to engage in more meaningful ways in the areas of STEM, Workforce and Entrepreneurship.
ACCELERATE As Biocom’s membership grows by 2020 to an estimated 1,500 member companies, we will become an even greater force in shaping the Science of Life industry and ensuring our members’ success. Our efforts over the next five years will Accelerate: • The Region’s Prominence. Southern California will become the world center in genomics, a powerhouse in digital health development, a pioneer in brain science breakthroughs and a creative force in delivering personalized medicine and molecular diagnostics attracting top researchers and companies to the region. We will be the epicenter for big data and analytics, accelerating understanding of the Science of Life. • Positive life science policy environment. Biocom will affect or initiate policy at all levels of government which aids in company formation, capitalization and ensure that Southern California is the best place to work and live. • Capital development. We will become the top region for capital investors, large pharmaceutical partnerships and new sources of financing. We will leverage state-of-the-art technology to identify new sources of capital for member companies. • R&D. We seek to become even more of an R&D powerhouse that continues to attract the attention of large pharma in Southern California and all over the world. • Talent attraction. Southern California is where you can have it all. You can work for fast paced start-ups, world class companies and top notch institutions while having an active lifestyle within a vibrant community. We will work with colleges and universities to develop courses and training to ensure the workforce matches the needs of our companies to accelerate success. • Southern California unified. We will expand our physical footprint into Los Angeles and Orange County and create a connected region like no other in the world. • Media attention. We will foster broad media coverage to highlight Southern California as a world leading cluster creating the Science of Life supported by Biocom and the strengths of our members, which will help attract investor dollars and recruit new life science companies and talent to Southern California. • The CRO industry. We already are on track to become the CRO capital of the world. By 2020, we will meet that goal in quantifiable measures.

Biocom will communicate the past successes of our purchasing group, CRO initiative and other key programs to help niche member segments leverage Biocom’s resources to their fullest benefit. Millennials. We track workforce trends and know that in Southern California, we’ve got the key elements that the next generation of scientists and CEOs are seeking. We’ll focus on the benefits that carry the most weight, including social engagement, as we engage young workers with our community. The future workforce. Create opportunities for students to complete and archive informational interviews of life science professionals using podcast or video as a medium. Company CEOs. Regional life science champions. Collaborate with our newly formed partnerships in Los Angeles County to connect the entire Southern California region both domestically and internationally. Family offices and super angels. Develop a network to increase early-stage investment and help these organizations connect with Southern California companies. Members. We will work with members on a solution that fills their needs for easier policy involvement and develop a state-of-the-art online career portal to serve as the go-to job board for both Southern California companies and job seekers. We will create marketing, events, and direct business development initiatives that are tactful, industry driven and focused on thought leadership to help Biocom members achieve success. Universities. Together, we will identify ways to improve tech transfer and help ease any law or policy hurdles acting as a barrier. Also: Research and propose new degree programs that match workforce gaps. Using the hundreds of subject matter experts within our advisory and ad hoc committees and members, we’ll create an accessible repository to share best practices, access mentors and pose questions to the collective membership. Biocom Purchasing Group will identify and engage supply chain professionals within the Los Angeles County life science community and beyond, and plug them into our existing processes to increase the collective knowledge base of our organization and its members. We also will establish a connection with a local supply chain management certification program and other higher education procurement programs to create synergies across the greater Southern California landscape.
