DRIN DAY 2016 Raising the awareness in the Drin River Basin
Biosfera – Center for education, environment and nature protection DRIN DAY 5 OF MAY 2016 Activities that Biosfera – Center for education, environment and nature protection organize were in line with UN Goals for sustainable development – Partnership for the goals and International waters. Civil society organizations and Local Municipalities in Macedonia within the stream of the Black Drin River take and advantage of celebrating Drin Day marking the importance of the ecosystem. Within the monitoring current status of the ecosystem, functionality of the state institutions and work of the Civil society organizations were explored. Brochures were distributed to the local citizens in order to raise the awareness of the citizens about importance of this ecosystem, human influence and responsibility to keep the balance for the current and future generations. With this actions and involvement of other CSO's non formal regional network ACT4 DRIN is created to cover future actions in protection of the Drin River water stream. ACTIVITIES: - Monitoring of the current status of the ecosystem of the Drin river water stream; - Exploring functionality of the state institutions and civil society organizations related to Water Protection; - Distribution of the brochures and promotional materials in order to raise the awareness of the citizens about importance of this ecosystem, human influence and responsibility to keep the balance for the current and future generations; - Networking between civil society organizations and - Social networks activities and campaigning.
BITOLA, EASTERN SHORE OF THE PRESPA LAKE
Citizens of Bitola are influencing the Prespa Lake trough: 1. Tourism activities; 2. Tendecy to build weekend houses;
3. National park “Pelister” is taking insufficient activities for water protection of the small mountain rivers flowing in to Prespa Lake; 4. Priority of the water is given to agriculture and apple production; 5. There is no satisfactory level of recognition of the importance of the Prespa Lake for the global eco system by the citizens; 6. There is a trend of depopulation of the villages in the Prespa region and migration to the bigger cities Bitola or Skopje.
RESEN, WESTERN SHORE OF THE PRESPA LAKE
Citizens of Resen are influencing the Prespa Lake trough: 1. Intensive apple production and usage of pesticides;
2. Local Municipality is seeing Prespa Lake as a tool for economic development investing in the tourism infrastructure (new beaches and restaurants; 3. National park “Galichica” is taking insufficient activities for water protection of the small mountain rivers flowing in to Prespa Lake; 4. There is no adequate waste water treatment and Lake of Prespa is a collector of the all water flows in Prespa Waley; 5. There is no adequate waste management; 6. Natural reserve “Ezerany” does not have adequate financial allocations and support by the state.

OHRID, OHRID LAKE Lake of Ohrid is a special keys for exploration: 1. Negative influence is trough the intensive tourism development and constant tendency and fight between investors and ecologists; 2. Environmental movement in Ohrid is very week represented by several small CSO’s dealing with ecosystem protection; 3. Local Municipality is under pressure of the constructing companies. Two of the catastrophic decisions are to build a highway trough the areas of the National Park “Galichica” and to change one of the biggest filters of the waste waters area of “Studenchishko blato” in the urban place for urban settlements; 4. Waste water collection system is often not working causing serious pollution of Ohrid Lake changing the quality of the water; 5. There is a need for international action in Ohrid Lake protection.

STRUGA, THE BLACK DRIN RIVER Black Drin River in Struga: 1. There is low level of Civil society organizations actions in protection of the Black Drin River; 2. No proper waste water management is causing the biggest water pollution of the River; 3. Illegal fishing is under control but still present; 4. Local Municipality has low attention to the importance of the Black Drin River for the global eco system; 5. There are less and less eels (Angula anguila) in the Ohird Lake. There is low attention to the work of Public company for electricity production “Elem” about stocking Ohird Lake with eels; 6. Black Drin RiverT is not seen as a part of the wider ecosystem with Jablanica Mountain.

DEABR, THE LAKE OF DEBAR Lake of Debar (Shpilje) is an arteficial lake build in the 60ties in the XX century. Black Drin River is flowing in to the lake protected with 100 meters dam for electricity production. In the Lake of Debar is flowing part of the Radika River making connection with the “Mavrovo” national park and region of Reka. The most important issues are: 1. Low level of protection of the Lake; 2. Low level of CSO’s actions; 3. Local Municipality is financially week and forcing economic development comparing to sustainable development; 4. Non adequate waste management that is influencing the lake; 5. There is no satisfactory level of recognition of the importance of the Lake of Debar for the global eco system by the citizens;
