Peter Harper Certified Organic Farmer

SET AMONGST TOWERING GUM FORESTS 100km north of Noosa, a most unexpected orchard is growing a spring-time bounty. Tended with love, an intimate understanding of organic farming and a truly sustainable approach, the stonefruit ripening on Peter and Teresa Harper’s trees are the product of a unique ecosystem in microcosm. Here on the Harper family’s tiny four-acre farm at Talegalla Weir – between Gympie and Hervey Bay – the unique climate makes it the perfect place to cultivate low-chill stonefruit varieties. “It’s colder (dropping below zero degrees Celsius sometimes), hotter and drier than the Sunshine Coast,” Peter says. “So I’m situated pretty good. I can grow a lot of stuff they couldn’t really attempt to grow in Noosa.” The Harper family farm became the first in Queensland to grow A-grade certified organic low-chill stone fruit in 2005, but Peter’s green thumbs started growing long before that. “Since I was a teenager I have worked with plants or produce in one way or another,” Peter says. “I have owned my property for nearly 30 years, and have been building the soils and biodiversity the whole time.” Peter’s mission is simple: to produce fresh, local, ripe fruits, from stonefruit to persimmons, bananas, star fruit and guava. “I grow small amounts of a large variety of fruits so I can pick all year round, concentrating on flavour, not size and appearance,” he says. “I guess the proof is in the pudding.” About half an acre of sugar cane – a highly-efficient, low-input crop – goes into the certified organic cold-pressed juice, and the waste returns to the earth to help the stonefruit grow. Peter works on a small scale, but he’s thinking about the big picture. He believes in reducing off-farm inputs and increasing carbon. Vast nets are key to the organic operation, keeping specially chosen beneficial insects and mites in, and fruit flies out (mostly), as well as reducing water loss and accelerating the breakdown of carbon, which increases the organic matter in the soil. He collects his own mulch and makes his own charcoal to reduce his off-farm inputs, and has been applying rock minerals to the soil for two decades, with benefits he says are too numerous to mention. The result is a crop of delicious fruit Peter is truly proud to produce.

Liver Detox Foods

Have you been hard on your liver lately? Maybe you just want to get rid of built up toxins from years of living in a chemcial-laden world. Optimising your diet with fresh, plant-based foods is a great place to start to keep your liver clean and healthy.

GARLIC

Just a small amount of this pungent white bulb has the ability to activate liver enzymes that help your body flush out toxins. Garlic also holds high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

GRAPEFRUIT

High in both vitamin C and antioxidants, citrus fruits like grapefruit, oranges, limes, and lemons support the natural cleansing abilities of the liver. Have a small glass of freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice to boost production of the liver detoxification enzymes that help flush out carcinogens and other toxins.

TUMERIC

The liver’s favorite spice. Turmeric helps boost liver detoxification by assisting enzymes that actively flush out dietary toxins. This golden spice tastes great in all kinds of dishes.

Why Organic? IT STARTS WITH THE SOIL From the ground up, organic farming takes a holistic, natural approach. Healthy soil grows healthy plants that produce an abundant bounty. At its most basic level, organic farming is done without the use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides or other artificial chemicals, and it produces food that is free of those artificial chemicals – outside and in. Many see the organic option as a more ethical one. The principals of organic agriculture include concerns for safe food production, for the environment, for animal welfare and issues of social justice. We buy organic produce to reduce the artificial chemicals taken into our bodies, through food, cleaning products and skin care. But often we choose organic with the knowledge that those producing it strived to minimise harm to the land, animals, and people. Organic farming is not easy (if you’ve ever had pests in your garden you will understand), and buying organic is often more expensive. But it is more environmentally sustainable, and the best option if you want to reduce the artificial chemicals going into your body, as well as additives found in many processed non-organic foods. At Bioshop all products are either certified organic to the highest national and international standards in their country of origin, or are whole foods of the highest standard. When you shop elsewhere look for the ‘certified organic’ logo on the label ask someone in store to find out whether the fresh produce they stock is organic.

DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT

Does your heart start beating faster when you hear an alert tone from your handbag or pocket? Do you dread the sound of an incoming email, flinch when the phone rings, and find yourself thinking how pointless social media is yet unable to stop scrolling and go to sleep?

A 2017 LONERGAN RESEARCH study found Australians spend a staggering 9.4 hours a day (that’s more than a third of their day) exposed to screens, like computers, mobile phones, tablets and televisions. We spend more time on screens than we do sleeping, and more than eating, working, communing and exercising combined. And while technology is supposed to make our lives easier, many users find themselves mores stressed and facing more demands for their attention than ever before. While we’re focussed on keeping up to date with the latest Facebook or Reddit, replying to all those WhatsApp messages, fielding phone calls while doing the shopping and answering work emails well after we’ve left the office, we’re letting other important things fall by the wayside. As demands for our attention and action flow in, other things – like exercise, spending time with friends and family, and recharging in our beautiful natural surroundings – get pushed to the bottom of the priority list. A national survey from R U OK? Revealed Australians spend eight times the number of hours looking at their screens each week, as they do with their loved ones. Being connected can be valuable, but like just about everything it’s better in moderation. Being constantly connected can boost stress, interfere with sleep, strain eyes, leave people feeling isolated and lonely. If you’ve ever been on holiday somewhere with no phone signal and no wifi, you’ll know just how much your body and mind can

8

real

recharge by switching off. In our ultra-connected modern world the idea of actually disconnecting can seem impossible, but it’s not. You just need to rearrange your priorities, and realise the sky probably wont fall if you switch your phone off for a few hours. And with the world-class natural landscapes Noosa has to offer, why would you choose screen time over the real world?’

WAYS TO DISCONNECT DO NOT DISTURB Switch your phone to Flight Mode or Do Not Disturb for a few hours. You get to live in the moment and you can pick up your messages when YOU are ready. MANAGE YOUR NOTIFICATIONS Switch off notifications for social media apps like Facebook and Instagram. Do you really need to be notified when Sarah comments on a post in the community board? I didn’t think so. FAMILY TIME Set aside some time every evening to spend with your loved ones in a phone-free zone. This is the perfect time to really connect with one another without distractions or interruptions. GET OUT Do you remember the olden days when people could go for a walk without making a documentary to send out on Snapchat? Leave the phone at home and be present. NO GO ZONE If you find you can’t leave the phone at home, or find it hard to stop yourself reaching for it, try some activities where you can’t take it with you, like going for a swim, a surf, or a bushwalk somewhere with no reception.

5 ways to put a spring in your step By Katrina Thorpe - Ikatan Spa Noosa

It’s springtime and as we escape the hibernation of winter months there’s an inner sense that feels uplifting for body, mind and soul. Spring is a great time to create some new routines for self-care, work life balance and happiness.

1

Treat your body like it’s the only one you have, because it is! Remove one thing each day or each week, which you know is of no benefit to your body, mind or soul and replace it with something that nourishes you.

2

You are what you eat and spring is a great time to clean out your pantry and restock with seasonal, wholesome, healthy and nutritious food. Find some new or forgotten favourite recipes to make some easy-to-eat, ready-togo nutritious meals and healthy treats.

3 Restoring your energy with green therapy is as simple as being amongst trees, gardens, or any forms of greenery. Take off your shoes and walk bare-footed on the grass or ground, - some call it ‘earthing’ - it’s a great way to ground yourself.

on the to-do list! You know you need to give yourself more time to do the things you love; yet life seems to get in the way. Give yourself permission to do something you really enjoy that restores your soul and makes you happy.

5 Book a regular ‘I deserve this’ date for yourself. Investing in yourself benefits you and everyone else in your life, it’s no different than servicing your car to keep it running. Spring is the perfect time to enjoy a body treatment to refresh more than your skin as the therapeutic effects of some body treatments can help rejuvenate your energy. Relax with a massage or give your face a glow with a deep cleansing facial treatment.

4 Soul searching to find inner peace can be tiring and often becomes another thing

GUBBI GUBBI DANCE invites the community to their Booin Gari (meaning “come this way”) festival held on the banks of the Noosa River on Tuesday 25 September, for an immersion in First Nation culture. This is the eleventh year of the Booin Gari Festival, showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music and dance performances, art and craft, yarning and education on land, sea and local heritage. Headlining this year’s event is rising star Emily Wurramara performing music from her new album Milyakburra in English and traditional language, while Gubbi Gubbi Dance are excited to lead a Corroboree of traditional dance and song. Kabi Kabi Custodian Lyndon Davis explains he is proud to be hosting the event and guiding the vision for the festival. “We really want to provide authentic and diverse cultural opportunities where everyone can join in, listen to stories and connect to country and culture,” Lyndon says. The event began in the car park of United Synergies, formerly Noosa Youth Service, and Gubbi Gubbi Dance’s role has evolved with the growth of the festival. In the spirit of reconciliation Lyndon has always shared his culture and taken people on a journey to learn about his proud Aboriginal heritage. “Since 2017 (tenth anniversary) we have taken the lead as event hosts with United Synergies major sponsor,” Lyndon says. “We are only a small team but we’re passionate about sustaining this signature reconciliation event for our community.” Booin Gari was rescheduled from April to September due to Lyndon’s own health issues this past year. Nicole Davis says her husband has had to draw on his own strength, beliefs and sustainable living practices to heal after mouth cancer.

We really want to provide authentic and diverse cultural opportunities where everyone can join in, listen to stories and connect to county and culture.

“Lyndon has always been an athlete and orator and so to be sidelined has been tough on him,“ Nicole says. Good fitness from a clean diet and healthy living has helped speed up his recovery, and his doctors have been amazed at his progress.” Lyndon will be sharing local creation stories in the Talking Circle with beautiful puppets made by local school students alongside Drums of Mer from the Torres Strait Islands. Brent Miller and Melinda Serico will lead activities in the Art Space, and By The River women and girls can learn weaving and how to make feather jewellery. On the water is children’s sailing, and delicious Indigenousinfused cuisine is on offer all day. This free family event is perfect school holiday fun, so grab the mob and come this way.

RED CABBAGE

Red flavour cabbage is far more bold, cruciferous and peppery versus green cabbage, which is also due to the anthocyanin pigments. The anthocyanins act as dietary antioxidants, digestive aids, anti-inflammatory, and they have potentially protective, preventative, and therapeutic roles in a number of human diseases.

Spring Harvest

BLUEBERRIES

Blueberries are sweet, nutritious and wildly popular. Often labelled a “superfood,” they are low in calories and incredibly good for you. They are so tasty and convenient that many people consider them to be their favourite fruit.

TOMATOES

Tomatoes come in all shapes and sizes. There is an endless menu of dishes that feature this star ingredient, from sauces, soups to gourmet pastas.

APPLES

We know crunching on an apple make us to feel great. The compounds in apples, especially polyphenols and apple fibre actually help our bodies. Which is why it is even more important to eat the whole apple, skin and all, to ensure you’re getting all the goodness, because a lot of the antioxidants, fibre and polyphenols are found close to or in the skin.

MUMMA’S LOVE

Nourishing body and soul with authentic, hand-made cuisine GROWING UP above her family’s Italian restaurant in Noosaville, Mia Welsh’s appreciation for Mediterranean cuisine started early.

“She absolutely ignited the flame,” Mia said.

Oscar’s Place was an iconic Thomas Street eatery, where diners came for Oscar Micari’s boisterous character and singing, as much as the food.

It was when Mia became a mumma to her two boys, Micah and Asher, that she threw herself into creating the healthiest versions of these meals she could, and adapting them for kids.

Each night Mia and the rest of her family shared their meal with diners, and she would trade her pizza for rollups at school the next day.

It was then that friends and members of her church began to notice something special, and so Mumma’s Sugo (Mum’s Sauce) was born.

But it wasn’t until she went to Rome at the age of 22 and met a “beautiful and boisterous” Italian mumma who taught Mia her family’s classic recipes and flavour tones, that her passion was stirred.”

“I think I started with a pot that would do five tubs worth of bolognaise and that was the first batch,” she said.

That mumma, Nene, was pivotal in Mia’s life. She taught Mia everything she knew about creating delicious, authentic Italian food, from the classic recipes and flavour tones, to the simple Italian principals of using the freshest and locally sourced ingredients.

16

real

“Living in Italy and learning from her clinched the passion for Italian food.”

“I sent a text to everyone who had liked my cooking and I sold the first batch in five minutes.” Fast forward five years and Mia makes 300kg of sauce each week – enough for 200 families to have a meal. Her sauces are stocked in seven local specialty stores and by direct order.

Living in Italy and learning from her clinched the passion for Italian food.

“We make everything by hand and monitor each and every pot, tweaking and tasting until it has reached the authentic depth of Italian flavour needed,” Mia said. “I put more into it because I love the satisfaction of people enjoying the depth of flavour they’ve never tasted before.” Mia’s aim is simple – to create nutritious and flavoursome food from locally sourced produce and organic meats to help bring some ease to the mayhem that is dinnertime for many a person and family on the Coast. Every pot is stirred with a wooden spoon, and the sauces are snap frozen to avoid the use of preservatives and nasty additives. “A lot of mumma’s are just so grateful to be able to feed their families food that is full of premium ingredients,” she said. “It’s about feeling loved by eating something that’s been made by a local with much passion and heart. “That’s how we live our life and how we eat.” Learn more at mummassugo.com.

Recycle right. Recover all paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, glass bottles and jars, aluminum cans and foil and steel tins. Do not put recyclables in plastic bags. Use a tub or basket to carry these items to your recycling bin. Leave lids and labels on plastic bottles. The recycling process will remove these. Garden waste belongs in your green waste bin. Do not put lawn clippings or branches in the recycling bin. Conserve water by not rinsing. Just empty any food or liquid before you put items in the recycling bin.

Lemons can be used for so much more than adding zesty flavour to your cooking and making lemonade! • An equal amount of lemon juice and water added to an atomizer will create a wonderful synthetic chemical-free green air freshener for your home. • Add an equal amount of lemon juice and water to a spray bottle for an effective kitchen and bathroom cleaner (spot test first). • Heat a bowl of water and lemon slices in your microwave for 30 seconds to a minute; then wipe out the oven. Stains will be easier to remove and old food odors will be neutralized. • Half a lemon stored in your fridge will help control and eliminate unpleasant smells. • Rub lemon juice into your wooden chopping board, leave overnight and then rinse. This will eliminate odours and give your chopping board a deep clean.

Storage Tips

Berries or grapes Wash berries or grapes only when you’re ready to eat them - extra moisture in the fridge will only promote early mould growth.

Take care not to put waste in your recycling bin. Make a conscious effort to separate your recyclables and waste and place them in the correct bins. Compost food scraps. These can be used on your garden as fertiliser. Electronic waste. Enlist the services of electronic retailers who have recycling bins for discarded appliances (mobile phones, batteries etc).

Interesting facts: Carrots will help you see better While they won’t actually improve your eyesight, they do contain lutein, a nutrient which can help prevent vision problems such as macular degeneration (a leading cause of blindness). However, leafy greens are even better sources of lutein!

Coffee Beans Store your coffee beans in the freezer to ensure they retain their flavour.

Egg Shells They’re packed with calcium, which both plants and worms love. You can add them to the garden as they are, but it’s best to crush them first for the best results. • Clean the eggs after using them to avoid the inside membrane becoming mouldy and/or smelly. • Allow to dry in a sunny spot or pop into the oven after you’ve been cooking to dry them out. Once dry, pop them into a blender and pulse until gritty. • Keep dry in a glass container, well-labelled. You can also use eggshells as biodegradable ‘pots’ for starting seedlings.
