NEEDLES AND EXTRAS
1 pair 4.50mm Knitting Needles, or size that gives correct tension.
A yarn needle; 2 stitch holders.
TENSION
18 sts and 40 rows to 10 cm over fishermans rib, using 4.50mm needles.
This project has been worked on bigger needles than normally recommended.
SPECIAL ABBREVIATION
K1B = knit into next st 1 row below, slipping both sts off needle together
BACK
Using 4.50mm needles, cast on 57 (61-67) sts. Beg 1 x 1 rib – 1st row (RS) – K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, K1.
2nd row – K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end. Rep 1st and 2nd rows twice more = 6 rows 1 x 1 rib in total. Beg fishermans rib – 1st row (RS) – K1, * K1B, P1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K1B, K1. 2nd row – Knit. Last 2 rows form fishermans rib
Cont in fishermans rib until work measures 24 (27-30) cm from beg, ending with a 2nd row Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of armholes as there is no armhole shaping. Shape Back Neck – Next row (RS) – Rib 20 (21-23), turn.
*** Cont on these 20 (21-23) sts and dec one st at neck edge in every row until 17 (18-20) sts rem. Work 2 rows.
Shape Shoulder – Cast off in rib, 9 (9-10) sts at beg of next row
Work 1 row. Cast off rem 8 (9-10) sts in rib. ***
Slip next 17 (19-21) sts onto a stitch holder and leave With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts and rib to end.
Rep from *** to ***, working 1 row more before shoulder shaping.
FRONT
Work as for Back to **.
Shape Neck – Next row (RS) – Rib 22 (24-27), turn.
*** Cont on these 22 (24-27) sts and dec one st at neck edge in every foll alt row until 17 (18-20) sts rem.
Work 7 rows.
Shape Shoulder – Cast off in rib, 9 (9-10) sts at beg of next row
Work 1 row. Cast off rem 8 (9-10) sts. ***
Slip next 13 sts onto a stitch holder and leave
With RS facing, join yarn to rem sts and rib to end.
Rep from *** to ***, working 1 row more before shoulder shaping.
SLEEVES
Using 4.50mm needles, cast on 29 (31-33) sts.
Beg 1 x 1 rib - Work 5 cm in 1 x 1 rib as for lower band of Back, ending with a 2nd row
Beg fishermans rib – Work in fishermans rib as for Back, inc one st at each end of 5th row, then in every foll 6th (8th-8th) row until there are 49 (51-55) sts.
Cont without shaping until work measures 23 (28-33) cm from beg, working last row on WS.
Shape Top – Keeping fishermans rib correct, cast off in rib 6 sts at beg of next 6 rows.
Cast off rem 13 (15-19) sts loosely in rib
Using mattress st, join right shoulder seam. With RS facing and using 4.50mm needles, knit up 14 (16-18) sts evenly along left front neck, knit across sts from front stitch holder, knit up 14 (16-18) sts evenly along right front neck, knit up 6 sts evenly along right back neck, knit across sts from back stitch holder – dec one st in centre, then knit up 6 sts evenly along left back neck = 69 (75-81) sts.
Work 5 rows 1 x 1 rib as for lower band of Back, beg with a 2nd row
Cast off loosely in rib
DO NOT PRESS. Join left shoulder and neckband seam. Sew in sleeves evenly between coloured threads, placing centre of sleeve to shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Darn in all ends.
