Architectural history in new contexts
English / German
Otto Wagner is considered as the “father of the Viennese modernism” and one of the most important international architects. The publication on the exhibition at the Museum of Applied Arts (MAK) illustrates the resonance of Wagner’s œuvre by protagonists of early modernism as well as his influence on his contemporaries, students and subsequent generations of architects and designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Jože Plecnik, Leopold Bauer, Rudolph M. Schindler, Frank Lloyd Wright, Auguste Perret, Frei Otto, Aldo Rossi, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

In four decades, Elsa Prochazka completed a range of projects of varying sizes: from furniture design through architecture to urban design projects. If there was a Vienna school of superior contemporary interior design, Elsa Prochazka would be a prototypical representative: “Her interiors seem to invite tactile participation, demanding the involvement of the body as an agent of the mind” (Otto Kapfinger). This quote could stand equally for her buildings. Prochazka developed and disseminates her conceptional approach within the framework of her professorships and her international lecturing activities. The book closes the gap in the documentation of significant female Viennese architects.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886–1969) was one of the key figures in 20th century architecture, shaping and defining the development of Modernism. This book traces the multi-facetted life and monumental achievements of Mies, and reviews the lasting influence of his work: the first buildings in Berlin, his villas, his visionary designs for high-rise buildings and theoretical projects for the metropolis; his activities at the Bauhaus up to its closure by the National Socialists; his emigration and experiences in America which ultimately resulted in the first high-rises built of steel; finally his return to Berlin to realize the building of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Jean-Louis Cohen Professor at the New York University and at Institut français d’urbanisme, Université de Paris VIII

His works are distinguished by a unique interplay of functional, technical and aesthetic aspects. An architect with no recognisable trademark style, Renzo Piano has nevertheless designed some of the most famous buildings in the world: among them the Pompidou Centre, the headquarters of the New York Times, the Shard Tower in London, the Whitney Museum in New York and the recently completed Palace of Justice in Paris. Renowned as a master of construction technology, the Pritzker Prize winner uses a wide variety of materials and construction methods to create buildings whose designs are heavily inspired by location and function. This monograph now presents 13 of his works, all previously published by DETAIL. Extensive project documentation is accompanied by numerous photos, plans and construction details.

How do we make building sustainable and fit for the future? The book presents a strategy for tackling the construction industry’s future challenges from the perspective of the organizing architect, and with a view to the interdisciplinary knowledge, capable of integration, of related disciplines. With a profound insight into the operative processes, the author analyses the complex mechanisms of the system that affect the whole of society and often follow very traditional process structures. He investigates the interaction between the stakeholders’ actions in the construction process and the framework conditions and, on that basis, develops a strategy which – itself a process – computes the elements of the intended target state. Architectural design in the digital age
English
A systemic transformation is underway in architectural design, engineering and construction. The discipline and profession of architecture is being reshaped in a moment where information, insight and predictions generated during the design process move into construction no longer essentially via drawings. Other, more profound digital techniques yield fundamentally different workflows, responsibilities and business models for architects. This book offers a comprehensive framework, detailed analysis and critical assessment of

How does the use of robots affect architecture?
English
The use of robots in architecture is already commonplace: robots automate processes that were previously done manually; complex shapes are created with the help of 3D printing; and autonomous swarm robots construct complex buildings. But how does the use of robots affect the resulting structures; how does it influence the thinking of architects who work with robots? Robotic Building answers these questions and more, drawing on a variety of practical examples.
A final chapter explores the idea of architect as robot, the fully-automated home and similar concepts in which the robot merges with its environment and becomes part of our experience. Gilles Retsin, Manuel Jimenez, Mollie Claypool, Vicente Soler Bartlett School of Architecture

How can smart technology open up new design opportunities – for the design, the execution, and the operation of buildings and for the digitalization of construction? A hitherto unusual conception of the building as a cybernetic architectural system forms the basis of this integrated design approach. The authors – architects and engineers with extensive design experience – contribute an overview of current technical components of automation and communication systems, as well as a summary of relevant laws, standards, and guidelines. Six example projects demonstrate completed applications at different scales, from a single-family residence to office buildings, and through to the Elbphilharmonie concert hall – amply illustrated in text, drawings, and photos.

Advances in the materials and the digitalization of architecture bring about new methods in design and construction. Whereas traditional timber construction consists of pre-cut and pre-assembled timber sections, modern timber buildings today consist of elaborate wood-based materials. Owing to their flexibility and good properties in terms of building physics and ecology, these wood-based materials are ideal for computer-aided building component production. Fifteen case examples from research, teaching, and practical applications provide inspiring insights into the potential of formable wood-based materials and digital design: woven wood, wood foam, living wood and organic joints, timber joints for robotic building processes, efficiencies of wood, designing with tree form.

Design of open spaces for public events
English
Open urban spaces are an ideal stage for public events. An important prerequisite for their design in an increasingly heterogeneous multicultural urban landscape is the relationship between design, use, and social function. The book documents both temporary as well as permanent installations of various kinds – from the open-air courtyard of a museum to the design of a river bank promenade, through to a city park. The projects illustrated are located in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, the Netherlands, the USA, Canada, and Australia.
Contributions from internationally renowned experts discuss the various dimensions of the design of urban open spaces – from the planning stage to the design, implementation, and upkeep, taking into account functional requirements. Affordable housing is currently in short supply in many European cities. Persuasive models and outlooks for the future are needed if demand is to be met. Yet how can costs be reduced without restricting the quality of housing? This book documents current outstanding housing developments from all over Europe, which are distinguished by their quality but also by the fact that they were realised with reduced construction costs. Urban microclimates cannot be explained solely on the basis of scientific phenomena, but are also affected materially and spatially by the city’s local architecture. The layout, design, and facade construction of buildings have a major impact on wind and temperature conditions. For this reason, architecture and urban design that have an effect on microclimates must be investigated in their social and cultural contexts. The publication uses international case studies to explain these relationships. The focus is on manifestations of urban microclimates in an architectural and urban design context. The places investigated are located in France, Italy, the USA, New Zealand, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Burkina Faso.

The author examines the urban development of Budapest from 1990 to 2010. This period is characterized by the significant decline in communally town planning: given the structural legacies of socialist urbanization, the decentralization of government and resources, and the impact of a post-socialist culture struggle, a trend is being analyzed in which nebulous competencies lead to unclear and thus to a failure of higher-level planning. The ensuing consequence is an increase in large, investment-driven projects: it is characteristic of these privately financed projects that they do not submit to higher level control, in particular when these control bodies are rather weak. This model-based analysis presents the phenomenon as exemplary of the development in post-socialist cities. Daniel Kiss Lecturer at the Institute for Urban Design, ETH Zurich

In the 18th century the Alps became the subject of a new type of contemplation of nature, which crystallized in the terms “sublime” and “exalted”. Oscillating between fear and fascination, this sensual experience triggered an exciting borderline experience: travelers ventured to the mountain world full of longing, and projected quite different dreams onto the “wild nature” which had yet to be opened up. To what extent has the sublime character influenced architecture in the Alps from the beginning of tourism to today? Under this motto the author analyses Alpine architecture in the context of architectural history and provides a critical assessment of contemporary tourism. A book that inspires us to reflect on the future of building in the Alps and on our relationship with nature.

With larger projects it makes sense to involve a project controller who will competently secure the client’s interests and effectively ensure that the client’s objectives are met throughout the project. To achieve this, it is not sufficient to be an experienced architect. Specialist project management skills are a mandatory requirement for the success of a project. The project controller is pivotal to the success of the project; together with the client he will define the objectives of the project, develop organizational structures, and be instrumental in appointing project participants. He will assist with the proper fulfilment of contracts and with the documentation of design decisions. The volume presents, in a practical way, all duties and services involved in project management. Model building as a tool
English
Architectural models are used at various stages of a project. As working models they support the design process: they are made up from time to time using simple materials, such as cardboard, without any attempt at accuracy, and continue to be adjusted and added to as the ideas and the design progress. The point here is to swiftly check a design idea, to allow it to be continued or dismissed. Presentational models are more involved; at this stage the design has been completed and the purpose of the model is
to convey the ideas to the potential user in a clear and easy-to-understand way. The book Architecture and Modelbuilding includes outstanding examples explaining the possibilities of this medium and, at the same time, provides comprehensive information on materials and techniques. Dimensions define space
English
The design of a building is a complex process in which the architect develops spaces which are defined by a number of different parameters. The most important of these are space requirements, distances, furniture and fittings, and movement zones. From the dimensions of the human body it is possible to derive guide values for these reference sizes that make spaces comfortable to be in and to use. This book is a useful reference work for students and designers for quickly looking up detailed information on space scenarios that

occur in many different types of buildings. For example, the book lists all important dimensions for entrance areas, doors, staircases, ramps, and elevators. On the basis of this fundamental information it is possible to design buildings in terms of function and type. Ludwig II (1864–1886) is more internationally known for his royal palaces than hardly any other regent of the 19th century. They are the symbol of a personal architectural vision which fascinates people from all over the world. However, the fame of his palaces has eclipsed other construction activities in the Kingdom of Bavaria: urban developments, hospitals, schools, theatres and museums, but also factories, railway stations, apartment blocks, churches, and synagogues were created under his regency. This book, for the first time, sheds light on the broad architectural

Designing landscape
English / German / Spanish
Designing gardens, parks and landscapes requires a holistic approach. It also requires extensive specialist knowledge. In courses and manuals the generalist or in-depth levels are frequently under-represented, or the attempted comprehensive view becomes too complex. “Landscape for Architects” now offers a fundamental reference work which is as comprehensive as it is practical and as holistic as it is detailed. Created in cooperation with the Architecture Department of Braunschweig Technical University, Landscape for Architects addresses the aspects of landscape architecture: “questions” are raised with abstract schematic drawings, and possible “answers” are illustrated with analytical drawings of case studies from the 20th and 21st centuries in order to inspire the readers’ own creativity

and to support the design process. The entire field of landscape design is dealt with in individual thematic volumes. The numbers of pages in the volumes differ, adding up to a total of 1000 pages in five volumes, which are published as packages with clear color marking: the “green block” with the first five volumes in fall 2018, the second and final one, also with five volumes, in fall 2019. Each volume fully covers the respective subject and can be used on its own – compact and user-friendly. The illustrations are consistently structured, with the guiding idea on the left-hand side and the associated drawing on the right-hand side. The drawings demonstrate how design concepts can be illustrated, and the three-language format provides an international vocabulary of design.

Design interventions for the reuse of existing structures must face the question of the past and the extent to which it should be included in the design for the future. This is the point of departure of Int|AR, a yearly publication on current issues in international adaptive reuse. Can architectural interventions become actions in the sense of interventions in art or civic involvement? Which forms are conceivable in design, building and the representation of architecture? How do they relate to performances and similar other forms of interventions? This Int|AR volume presents essays, built or unbuilt projects and ideas that investigate undiscovered potentials in building in existing fabric.

Design has long expressed and established itself as an independent research competence – a fact that also companies, institutions and politicians have come to acknowledge. What is still needed, however, is a stronger public platform for design to confidently reflect upon this process and to establish and communicate the specific innovative and experimental dimension of design research. For this reason, the Board of International Research in Design (BIRD) has developed the New Experimental Research in Design (NERD) format. The edited conference contributions of twelve young researchers from all over the world provide an impressive and diverse and insightful range of intelligent and inspiring approaches in design research, giving rise to further debate and action in the rapidly evolving field.

This art book for the first time presents the comprehensive œuvre of Bernhard Kleber, Professor of Stage Design, in particular his photographic work: it supports and also inspires the making of his theatrical work. Photographic notes compiled in the form of travel diaries are included in addition to (self-)portraits, still lifes, and pictures of his stage sets. At times, his own photographs were partially painted over and modified, and then again photographed, going beyond pure documentation. This creates a manic world of images full of passion for the photograph-

The œuvre of the Austrian painter Josef Mikl (1929–2008), documenta participant and Austria’s representative at the Biennale in Venice, always had a second facet: pointed social satire. In his caustic and pointed illustrations, Mikl – who was also Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts – reacted to contemporary developments in the artistic and cultural scenes: in adventurous stories, such as his “Wunderpferd” series, the “Kulturtagung von Worpswede”, or the figure of the “Journalistenfresserin Hawranek”, he vented his feelings about art criticism. For the first time, this book provides an overview of the satirical œuvre of Josef Mikl and of his extensive collection of sketch books, pages of text, episcope images, and booklets.

Actualization, reflection, and fictionalization of natural stone Imitation as a transfer process and artistic ability
Isabella Augart, Maurice Saß and Iris Wenderholm University of Hamburg
English / German
Available December 2018
The natural genesis of stone is particularly suitable as a production paradigm of mimicking art; examples are rock and coral formations, or the veins in marble, that are an expression of the forces of natural creation. Art materials bridge the chasm between idea and execution and impact on the working process; shaping the material reveals levels of meaning in the piece and, likewise, the specific form of the material offers opportunities for generating meaning. Imitating natural materials is much more than a replacement of the material or a demonstration of one’s own artistic skills. The contributions in this book take a close look at the imitation of natural stone as artistic potential to express the interplay between natural and artificial material qualities.

In his grotto and garden concepts, Bernard Palissy (1510–1590) developed the veristic “style rustique”. It reflects the upheavals that transformed Renaissance Europe, particularly in the fields of religion and science. Juliette Ferdinand addresses all of Palissy's areas of interest, including ceramics, garden art, and natural philosophy. She sheds light on his demand for a reform of science and religion that should be guided by a return to the origins of nature and scripture. Beyond the astonishment that their appearance still arouses in the viewer, it is the complexity and richness of an era that the “rustic figulines” testify to. The literary, artistic, and scientific culture of early modern Naples is closely linked to the natural topography of the city, stretching from Iacopo Sannazaro’s poetic evocation of the Campania landscape to Giambattista Vico’s approach in which he anchors human civilization to the existential confrontation with natural forces. With the open sea, the rocky coastline, and the menacing presence of Vesuvius, the image of Naples, more than any other city in early modern times, is associated in the collective imagination with the forces of nature. Even the populace was interpreted as a force of nature. In this volume, art, literature, and science historians investigate the convergence of culture and nature in a unique geographic context.

Up to now, the discourse in art history on positions of skepticism was carried out by relating philosophical theses to the iconography of paintings. The research dealing with skepticism raised the question as to how philosophical texts are reflected in works of art. Instead, this publicationanalyses how pictures, owing to their own medial structure, can become places of performative processes that are comparable to the dialogic strategies of skepticism. One of the main theses posits that, in this context, contradictions and negations occur that have the character of medial self-questioning. From time immemorial, works of art have been moved in space and time to locations that are significantly different from the places they are thought to originate from. But how do such translocations come about? What are the consequences for the appearance, semantics, and function of the artefacts? And how are they categorized or manipulated by contemporaries and researchers? These questions are addressed by the publication’s contributions which, in particular, analyze the ideological and power-political dimensions of such migrations. The case studies cover stolen god statues in antiquity through to borrowed motifs in the early modern age, misunderstood works of supposedly “primitive” art through to “rescued” architecture fragments at the present time.
