FROM THE EDITOR

et’s get outside and go! The robins and waxwings have returned. Early spring flowers are popping up from the thawing ground, and the sun is lingering longer, bringing warmer temperatures with it. I’m ready! I’m ready to plant some annuals, sit on the porch (without a blanket), wear flip-flops, and most of all, head to the lake. It’s time. This issue is designed to warm you up, even if Birmingham gets that last, late-spring frost. Our annual second homes and getaways issue takes you into the garden, out to the lake, and down to the beaches of 30A. And go ahead and dust off your passport. We’re also whetting your appetite for far-flung vacations.

Last summer, my husband, Warner, and I discovered Devil’s Thumb Resort in Colorado. We fly-fished, hiked through Aspen forests, and spent some time just enjoying the pool. We are both looking forward to returning. There’s more fish to catch and so much more to explore.

For close-to-home getaways, we take a look inside houses at Smith Lake (page 46) and Lake Martin (page 62). Both offer an abundance of vacation comforts for family and friends, as well as incredible views and a whole lot of style. Venture a bit further to a new condo at Alys Beach. The Whitby, the community’s latest addition, offers exclusive members-only benefits such as an infinity pool overlooking the Gulf (page 54). If you’re looking for a more customized adventure, you’ll definitely want to read our interview with Brownell travel planner Kathryn Burns (page 70). She’s a proven pro at making bucket list trips come true for Birmingham families. Check out a few of her top recommendations, and hear from some of her clients about their favorite experiences. And if a staycation is more your speed, you won’t want to miss the beautiful, terraced garden rooms designed by Troy Rhone. You’ll find plenty of inspiration to make your own garden a getaway in itself. We’re also celebrating the opening of Troy’s new Mountain Brook Village shop filled with garden antiquities to help make his look your own. Finally, don’t miss our two special sections. Designer Spotlight (page 37), features local talent who share their style insights as well as ways they can help you. House shopping? Make Your Move (page 77) introduces you to the pros who can help with the logistics of relocating. In this housing market, we need all the help we can get. I hope you enjoy the armchair travel on the following pages. Better yet, I hope you are planning your own getaway. I’m ready to start packing!

lush, grassy slope is lovely to behold but not so practical for cocktails in the garden with friends. When a client approached garden designer Troy Rhone about turning the steep hill behind her home into a space for entertaining, he responded with a vision 16 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2

for a progression of outdoor rooms. A pea gravel area centered on a sundial serves as an entryway into the outdoor retreat. “We wanted the lower garden to form a quadrant around the sundial,” says Troy. “But we worked hard to keep it from being too formal. The casualness of the pea gravel helped with that.” The crunch of gravel underfoot also signals a transition birminghamhomeandgarden.com

toward a calming experience, slower and quieter than the household hustle. Working with remnants of the existing backyard, Troy carved into the hillside to create a series of flattened, terraced rooms. He extended a pair of brick planters to create a raised bed that defines both the garden entry and seating area. Steps lead from the entry level up to the terrace where outdoor seating and a firepit offer a place to enjoy company. To make the garden feel mature quickly, Troy employed some maneuvers that would defy the appearance of a new installation. Pavers and bricks were laid without mortar, and Troy seeded the steps, borders, and terrace with moss to add texture and dimension. He also planted creeping fig and smilax to soften the new brick wall. A collection of garden ornaments, including a fountain from Architectural Heritage, lichencovered teak benches, and a coral-andiron table with mirror above, brings antiques and old-world appointments into the space. 18 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2

Perennials and annuals are abundant, chosen for their quick growth, while established boxwoods lend visual weight. In the spring, purple and white pansies serve as ground cover, warming the roots of the still-bare crepe myrtles. In shady areas, a variety of hostas, ferns, lamb’s ears, and impatiens flourish in hues of green and white. Above the seating area, a bank of blue and pink French hydrangeas bloom in abundance. Further in, a grassy lawn is staked with a row of Adirondack chairs situated for basking in the sun or enjoying a quiet moment. Thanks to the introduction of garden rooms, carefully chosen accessories, and plantings guaranteed to thrive in the Birmingham climate, the garden presents itself as a well-established landscape, grown slowly and well-tended over time.

e’re breaking ground again! We are so excited to share the rendering for our next Inspiration Home. Located on Chestnut Street in Vestavia Hills, the home will be a beautiful addition to the tree-filled neighborhood. Adam Gerndt designed this family-friendly plan with master on main, three bedrooms and three baths upstairs, and an open-concept living space. Other features will include a wet-room shower (the bath will be in the shower), two fireplaces, beamed ceilings in the den, and a two-car garage beneath a screened outdoor room. There’s also a full basement with bath that could serve as guest quarters or a media room. “The house brings authentic scale to the neighborhood,” Adam says. “It’s not overblown, but it’s not a small cottage. It’s designed to grow with the family.” 28 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2

but beg to be examined closely for their little nuances. Interior designer Rebecca Hawkins channeled this design approach when she helped Sybil and husband Bill transform their bedroom into a retreat they both could enjoy.

“When I first saw the room, it was dark—not like Sybil at all” Rebecca says. “The ceiling was low, and heavy curtains blocked the windows.” To lighten it up, Rebecca worked with Francis Bryant Construction to vault the ceiling and birminghamhomeandgarden.com

Soft coverings from Leontine linens and a curvaceous upholstered bed trimmed in hot pink offer a contrast to the graphic lines of the artwork (Susan Hable), TV chest, and light fixtures. The Roman shade in a traditional Schumacher print with fringed trim offers more garden delights. Accessories such as the lamp and end table from Circa Interiors & Antiques lend contemporary flair. Artwork by Ashley Woodson Bailey is a double standout thanks to the electric green frame.

COLOR CONNECTION When it comes to living in full color, designer Rebecca Hawkins is a real pro. “Sybil, Bill, and I all LOVE color!” she says. Here, she offers tips for making color and pattern work in any space. REST YOUR EYES One key to a colorful room is incorporating some white so that the eye has a place to rest. “Since there was so much color in the fabrics, I kept the headboard and coverlet white so everything else would pop,” Rebecca says. REPEAT PATTERN A smattering of pillows dresses the bed in coordinated colors, while patterns anchor the Roman shade and side chair. “I repeated the print from the shade on the bed and then played off the colors in both prints,” she says.

GO BOLD Rebecca wanted to add something bold to the bedroom. “I knew Bill loved the color orange, so I figured why not include a leather TV cabinet in that color?” she says. The hue of the custom piece is echoed in artwork and fabrics. The cabinet’s nailhead trim gives it a distinctive look. DON’T FORGET BLACK “Every room needs a touch of black,” Rebecca says. “I especially love anything lacquered in the color.” Nightstands that flank the bed with style and storage fit both bills.

It’s a resource for our projects, as well as a place for others who value a similar aesthetic. HOW DID YOU FILL A VOID IN THE MARKET? Birmingham has a large design presence with a vast amount of talent. We wanted to share a collection of products that inspire us and perhaps offer more design options for other designers, our clients, and friends. There is always a desire to find interesting things to add to our homes to make them creative, unique, and reflections of our own personalities. We hope that some of the things we have brought together will inspire others. SIGNATURE STYLE: We carry our own line of products that our staff of architects and designers have created. As an additional creative outlet, we encourage our team to design products that they are passionate about to add to the collection. In addition, as we travel for

work (and leisure) across the U.S., we often find beautiful antiques, rugs, art, and other one-ofa-kind pieces. We feel that it is important for the showroom to have an eclectic appearance that combines old and new furnishings just like our interior projects embrace. ABOUT CHRISTOPHER COLLECTION: For years, Chris Reebals and Joanna Goodman dreamed of opening a local retail store that specializes in quality pieces to encompass all that is the Christopher Architecture & Interiors brand. This dream fell into place once a friend and co-worker’s family-owned art gallery building became an option. Together,

they transformed the property into what is now Christopher Collection, all while paying homage to the original use of the building by offering priceless works of art and fine interior decor in the heart of Birmingham, Alabama. ABOUT JOANNA: Joanna Goodman, Vice President & Director of Interiors, ASID, LEED A.P., is an interior designer with over 20 years of experience in both commercial and residential design. She is responsible for award-winning projects, ranging from custom residential estates to contemporary commercial office buildings, Joanna has developed a reputation for her spirit of creativity, attention to detail, and passion for capturing her clients’ vision in their projects. As Director of Interior Design, she leads the design process for all interior projects. Joanna’s leadership has resulted in CAI being named a finalist in HGTV’s 2018 Faces of Design competition and winning this award in 2017. She has been published in Southern Home, Southern Lady, Ocean Home, Elle Decor, Birmingham Magazine, and Birmingham Home & Garden. She was also a featured speaker at the 2018 Architectural Digest Design Show in New York.

getting organized with kim mcbrayer of space cadets WHAT SPACES MAKE THE MOST DIFFERENCE TO YOUR CLIENTS? While we can tackle any storage space in homes and offices, we primarily work in pantries and clothes closets. These are the two areas our clients access on a daily basis. We love transforming a bare closet into a masterpiece of function and style, complete with drawers, shoe storage, jewelry trays, and even lighting. WHAT ARE THE TRENDS IN CLOSETS, PANTRIES, AND MUDROOMS? Bigger closets, more storage, and functional task spaces! We have designed appliance workstations in pantries, dressing tables in closets, and lockerstyle mudrooms complete with hooks to hold all the jackets and backpacks for each family member. Many of our clients are asking for dual-purpose spaces that combine a guest bedroom or den with a home office. One of our favorite terms is the CLOFFICE. We convert a closet into an office outfitted with a door that can be shut at closing time.

CAN YOU HELP ME IN THE GARAGE? Yes! The garage is often the largest and most neglected room in the house, which results in clutter. The solution is good design with quality storage components. When we learn how a family uses this attention-deprived space, we can take inventory and develop a customized system of cabinets and accessories to meet the family’s needs.

The At Home Furnishings team shares what’s happening in design and in store. stop by to see how they can help you! HOW HAVE DESIGN TRENDS CHANGED? Design elements, including furniture and accessories, have gone from chunky, imposing pieces to items with lighter finishes and cleaner lines. More people are gravitating to furniture with modern/mid-century style. Color palettes have also changed over the years. Neutral hues are always a great choice for upholstery, but customers are now integrating more bold prints and colors. YOUR SHOWROOM IS HUGE! HOW DO YOU KEEP CUSTOMERS FROM BECOMING OVERWHELMED? The shop is so approachable thanks to the organizied spaces and design vignettes. We offer custom upholstery, case goods, lighting, tabletop, mirrors, and accessories. We even have clothes and jewelry, as well as an amazing array of candles. We always want to have something available for every design taste and budget.

Fabrics, rugs, and artwork are great jumping-off points. Currently, forest green and navy are very popular with our customers looking for a pop of color. Bring in a photo or sample of what you like and we will happily guide you in the right direction. ABOUT US: At Home Furnishings is a unique, privately-owned store in the historic Homewood district of Birmingham. We have been in business for more than 20 years. Our wares are handpicked by the owner and staff to ensure that everyone’s tastes are satisfied. The flea market style makes the shop charming and inviting. And the incredible inventory, sourced in the U.S. and globally, changes daily.

BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE STARTING FRESH: The first thing we tell anyone starting a new design or adding to an existing room is to look to the color palette.

Our greatest pleasure is helping people make their spaces feel comfortable and inviting no matter what their style may be. We make every effort to ensure that our prices and quality are far and away the best our customers can find. We want every experience with At Home to be something that our customers look back on with extreme satisfaction.

Carrie Pittman Hill What inspired you to open CANVAS? When my family moved into a new home, I was very selective in choosing items I thought were beautiful— from pillows to candles to rugs to pottery. It inspired me to open CANVAS as a way to share my love of decor while also showcasing my artwork. Tell us about your connection with fellow creatives. I strongly believe in encouraging and promoting others. I represent Too Pillows, Southern Infused Olive Oils, MG Intaglios, Evergreen Collection, Blakeline, Christina Cohn Ceramics, Favor Candles, and more. All together, the energy is unstoppable, healing, and contagious. What inspired you to become an artist? Painting started out as a form of therapy and self-expression for me. I never intended anyone to ever see my work. Now I paint to make people happy or peaceful—or maybe to even give them hope again. Do you have any new ideas up your sleeves? Painting is a fluid language—you can never really run out of things to paint. Colors, textures, light, and ideas are always there! I’m looking into future collaborations with national brands, as well as lifestyle textiles. I also host pop-up shops with other makers. The sky’s the limit! katrina porter shares why she loves designing everyone’s favorite Room in the house. FAVORITE APPLIANCE? The Wolf Ceiling-Mounted Hood. It can be hung 36 to 84 inches above the cooking surface. Having the flexibility to raise the hood higher, or even conceal it all together, allows me to create a more open, hearth-like area. I also love speed-cook ovens. These ovens offer infrared technology and combine the speed of a microwave with the power of convection baking so that you can cook food from top to bottom and inside simultaneously. They are great for busy families who need to get dinner prepared faster. DESIGN AND FUNCTION MATTER. For renovations, it’s just as important to eliminate wasted, impractical spaces as it is to create new, functional areas. While adding paint, new countertops, or a new backsplash can elevate a room for a smaller budget, it doesn’t change how the kitchen serves you. If you simply do not have the budget for a full gut renovation, then look at adding accessories such as roll-out shelves.

WHY CUSTOM? Custom appointments such as cabinets and hoods provide me the creative freedom to design the best possible layout while capturing the personality of each client. ABOUT KATRINA: Katrina has invested 25 years in honing custom kitchen designs. Her expertise ranges from the latest in appliance technology to the best in storage solutions. She draws each space in AutoCAD to ensure precision.

Foo Shunnarah and his team bring a wealth of knowledge to any project and will make sure you get the flooring and service you want. That’s what “Foo and You” is all about.

HOMEWOOD CARPET & FLOORING Homewood carpet & Flooring knows the ins and outs of what’s underfoot. Here, the team shares tips for smart choices and why they’ve become a respected go-to in the industry. WHAT’S TRENDING? More and more, customers are looking to luxury vinyl, laminate, and waterproof flooring. These are products that can be used throughout the house, especially with today’s better technology and durability. They’re also affordable. WHAT FLOORING IS BEST FOR BEDROOMS? Flooring for bedrooms all depends on what the clients like to feel when they get out of bed. My preference is hardwood or vinyl plank, but it’s really up to each individual person. You also have to consider the amount of traffic in the space. Some clients prefer carpet but worry about pets damaging it. We represent several companies that sell durable, pet-friendly carpets. WHAT ABOUT KITCHENS AND BATHS? Tile is a great choice for any room with wet surfaces. If there is ever a water leak, tile is sealed against damage. Hardwood floors would warp and need to be replaced.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER SPACES? In addition to flooring for the traditional rooms in your house, we carry products for gyms, playgrounds, and garages. Customers can see a wide variety of colors and styles in our showroom. Choices include wood, carpet, and tile from brand name suppliers, as well as unique options such as plank, tile, and luxury vinyl flooring. ABOUT US: Homewood Carpet & Flooring is built not only on the motto “Foo and You” (referring to the relationship between owner Fuad “Foo’’ Shunnarah and his

clients), but also on discipline, trust, and— most importantly—family. When he was very young, Foo’s parents, Fuad Sr. and Samira, began preparing him for anything that may come along in life. They taught him that if you show respect to everyone, you will be respected. Every day, Foo strives to be his best, do his best, and always be honest with people, both in life and at work. Foo quickly realized that service and attention to detail would separate Homewood Carpet & Flooring in a crowded market. You can see these ideals at work in his seamless installations of hardwood floors and carpets that have no wrinkles, tearing, or ripping. Foo understands that time is important, so he specializes in consulting with customers in their homes and businesses to find the perfect floor for any situation. He’ll bring color samples to match decor, as well as give professional advice on what types of floors will work for each client’s particular environment.

NESTLED IN A COVE, A MODESTLY SCALED SMITH LAKE HOUSE LIVES LARGE WHILE CELEBRATING ITS SETTING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS AND NATIVE PLANTS.

Pecky cypress cabinetry and a soapstonetopped island play into the natural elements found throughout the home. A brutalist-inspired chandelier from Mecox Gardens pairs with a Pierre Frey fabric at the window to maintain the neutral color scheme. Simple cuttings of Sweet Bay magnolia speak to the landscape beyond.

ohn Hagefstration knows a thing or two about Smith Lake. He’s owned two other homes in the area and has invested in developments at the lake as well. So he knew just what to look for when searching for a piece of property to build his third lake home—and he certainly got it right. Located on an isolated peninsula with a series of coves, the land offered the ideal lake trifecta: expansive water views, a sandy beach, and abundant privacy. And John didn’t waste any time calling on the ideal design duo to execute his vision. “I worked with Ben Shepard 48 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2

and Darla Davis on my last Smith Lake house and on significant renovations to a mid-century home in Mountain Brook,” says John. “We speak the same language when it comes to design.” Adds Ben, “We were all on the same page about our goals for the project—a house that feels tucked into the landscape with an emphasis on natural materials, along with sight lines that connect the spaces and embrace the RIGHT: The lower floor’s covered terrace leads to the guest quarters. Folding shutters can be flung open or closed depending on the season. A zinc table and Klismos-style chairs from Restoration Hardware provide another dining and entertaining option. The concrete console table is from Mecox Gardens. birminghamhomeandgarden.com

The only sheetrock in the house is in the foyer, allowing for the installation of a Phillip Jefferies grasscloth wallpaper hand-painted by decorative artist Jan Roberts. “We wanted it to look like a 1930s Deco-inspired forest scene,” says designer Andrew Brown. A vintage Maison Jansen bench serves as seating or a drop zone. The Roman shade fabric is from King Cotton.

“Our clients like that we really appreciate appropriately scaled and elegant design that’s not showy. This house certainly speaks to those touchstones.” —Architect Darla Davis birminghamhomeandgarden.com

TAKE ON THE LAKE LOCATION: I love the proximity of Smith Lake to Birmingham. I can make it in an hour. There is less traffic when you head north, no matter the time of day, and you don’t have to deal with Highway 280 headaches going or coming. TOPOGRAPHY: Smith Lake comprises 550 miles of shoreline and has so many interesting and private peninsulas and coves. It has the feeling of a lake in the mountains. It’s so diverse, so you have to be very intentional when describing the location of your house— generalizations won’t cut it. WATER: It’s very deep, clean, and clear. In the spring, it reaches 510 feet above sea level at full pool. Then it goes down gradually to around 500 feet starting in July though early spring. That’s when the natural sand beaches on my property get bigger. I like that summer progression. SCENE: Smith Lake has a casual, informal atmosphere. There’s no country club or golf club. People come to escape and entertain family and invited guests. 50 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2

A double-rolled gable roof treatment on the façade makes for a cozy, welcoming introduction. Inside, FireRock concrete pavers seamlessly join the main living spaces to each other, as well as to the back terrace. The main bedrooms and bunkroom have oak floors laid in a herringbone pattern, imparting a separate identity to those private areas. To keep the scale modest, as well as suitable for weekend living with or without guests, the architects designed a lower level with its own entrance and no interior staircase. “It feels more like a birminghamhomeandgarden.com

guest house than a lower story,” John says. “Sometimes I forget it’s even here.” When it came to the furnishings, John wished to include existing custom pieces from his previous Smith Lake home. He worked with interior designer Andrew Brown to reimage his furniture collection by reupholstering items or using them in fresh locations while also introducing new custom pieces and finds. “We wanted the interiors to be free from fuss but still engaging with a subtle palette that conversed with the outside,” says Andrew.

Both the exterior and interior design circle back to the beautiful natural setting with its canopy of trees. Landscape contractor Joey Bischoff incorporated native plants and trees throughout, such as Oak Leaf hydrangeas, Sweet Bay magnolias, wax myrtles, native azaleas, yaupons, and beautyberry shrubs. The result of the whole stems from kindred spirits with a clear and focused vision to create an exceptional home in an exceptional location. This one just may have staying power. After all, third time’s a charm.

ho’s ready for warmer weather and a trip to the Gulf Coast beaches of 30A? Lots of Birmingham families, that’s who. “We’ve been vacationing in the area for more than 15 years,” says this homeowner, a Birmingham resident who, along with her family, decided it was time to invest in a permanent getaway at Alys Beach. They decided on The Whitby, a newlybuilt, mixed-use building overlooking birminghamhomeandgarden.com

the Alys Beach Town Square. “The architecture drew us in,” the homeowner says. “With the lively mix of shops and restaurants right downstairs and easy access to the beach and pool, this was the perfect location.” The condominium was under construction at the time of their purchase, so the couple was able select furnishings well in advance of their move-in. It was a happy collaboration from the outset as they first worked with Birmingham designer Ansley Turncliff

of ATM Design. Ansley then introduced the couple to Marisol Gullo, the owner of Not Too Shabby, a design store with shops in Miramar Beach and Inlet Beach, as well as Marisol, a design studio. The resulting endeavor reveals textures and durable fabrics combined with a palette of subtle colors. Influenced by the sand and the sea, the designers created a contemporary coastal vibe. “Working on this house in Alys Beach was a joy,” Marisol says. “With the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room and so much beauty all m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2 | BH&G 55

eep it simple. That was one family’s request for their second home getaway on Lake Martin. Built for entertaining family and friends, the Tom Adamsdesigned house is well suited for easy, waterfront living—without a lot of fuss or maintenance. The family wanted a place to retreat on the weekends. After all, who wants to work on vacation? Top of their list was something uncomplicated that capitalized on views and fun. Tom designed a two-story home that offered plenty of both. A one-roomdeep, gracious, open living space takes in sweeping views of the lake even before you step inside the front door. Upon approach, the double-height floating staircase gives a clear picture of the panoramic views on the lake side. There, a wall of windows opens to the outdoor patio and pool set on a rise above the lake. “We kept the color palette neutral with shades of ivory, beige, and grey to let the views out of the large floorto-ceiling windows be the focus,” says interior designer Catherine Pringle. Stepping in to outfit the interior furnishings, Catherine worked with the owners to continue their wishes for more fun, less fuss. Essentials included comfortable furniture for relaxing, durable fabrics and materials, and room for entertaining. “We selected performance fabrics, indoor/outdoor rugs, and the acrylic kitchen barstools all with wet bathing suits and children in mind,” she says. “And the multiple seatings areas in the living room, along with the porches,

Poised for sunset views, the home sits just above lake level. The siting provided the perfect opportunity for a pool. “It’s a nice luxury to enjoy when you come in off the lake,” says the homeowner. An electric cover keeps children safe and animals out.

allow for easy gatherings for large groups.” Most impressive of all, Catherine turned the job around in only six weeks—just in time to capture the last days of summer and the beginning of Auburn’s football season. “To find what we needed quickly, we sourced a lot of the pieces in Birmingham,” Catherine says. “It was great to be able to select furnishings locally.” The living spaces and main bedroom comprise the first floor, and upstairs, there’s an abundance of beds and baths 64 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2

for the kids and guests. “We like to be able to host more than one family at a time,” says the homeowner. “And, with two young kids, we wanted space for them to be able to invite guests as well.” Settled in for just over a year now now, the family finds themselves at the lake almost every weekend. “It’s nice to have a place to enjoy in all the seasons,” says the homeowner. “In the summers, we’re boating, biking, and enjoying the pool. During the fall and winter, it’s our home base for Auburn games.” birminghamhomeandgarden.com

Hidden behind paneled doors in the living room (on the right side of the fireplace), the main bedroom enjoys seclusion and privacy. A soaring ceiling offers an airy, spacious feel. For simple housekeeping, the owner specified that all of the beds in the house would be king or twin size. “That way, we don’t have to worry about mixing up a lot of sheets in varying sizes,” she says. Her less-is-more philosophy applied to throw pillows as well. “I didn’t want them to end up all over the floor.”

THE BAHAMAS Why go? You can get there quickly! Only a two-hour, nonstop flight from Atlanta, the Bahamas is great for travel any time of year. You can escape the cold in the winter, and it’s not too hot in the summer.

Where to stay? For couples: Four Seasons Ocean Club For special occasions: Rosewood Baha Mar For families: Grand Hyatt Baha Mar or Atlantis. There’s a brand new water park at Baha Mar, and the resort’s three hotels (SLS, Rosewood, and Grand Hyatt) share a lot of amenities, including a casino. Atlantis offers a water park with several hotel options and loads of celebrity-owned restaurants.

What to do? In addition to visiting the water parks, restaurants, and casinos, you can swim with the dolphins and turtles, go on a fishing excursion, or take a snorkeling tour.

Take it from Lisa and Matt Costanzo: “We stayed at the Four Seasons Ocean Club in the Bahamas for our 20th anniversary this past fall. The resort was fabulous—very quiet and peaceful. Opening our patio doors in the mornings and looking out at the ocean beyond was a wonderful way to start each day. We spent most of our time by the pool, where we also had a spectacular view of the Caribbean.” —Lisa Costanzo

ITALY Why go? A trip to Italy is ideal for families, friend trips, and couples. The people are incredibly friendly and very welcoming to tourists. Destination highlights include Rome, Venice, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast.

When to travel? Italy is great any time, but summer is the peak of tourist season. Spring break and fall are also good times to visit, especially if you want to avoid larger crowds.

What to do? Take a gelato bicycle tour or a pasta-making class. Don’t miss the Colosseum and the Forum in Rome. The city of Pisa is also a fantastic spot. In northern Italy, it’s fun to charter a boat for the day on Lake Como.

Take it from the Brown Family: “Kathryn planned our upcoming spring break trip to Italy. My husband, Matt, and I are traveling with our three children (ages 8, 11, 13) to Rome, Florence, and Venice. Kathryn has thought out a very kid-friendly way for us to appreciate all the beauty and history of these three Italian cities. I am most excited about the gondola ride through Venice and cycling through the wine country in Chianti.” —Taylor Brown

UTAH’S NATIONAL PARKS Why go? Utah is life-changing with a landscape that seems otherworldly. A trip here involves a good bit of car time, but it’s a fun reminder of the old days when we packed up and hit the road as families.

When to travel: Summer is tourist season. It’s busy and hot, but it is definitely the best time to go.

What to do? In Zion, you must hike through The Narrows with a guide. Think wet boots, waist-high water, and poles for stability. For the brave, hike Angels Landing. In Moab, go rafting, ride horses, and take a jeep tour. Touring Utah is a great, active family vacation.

How to see it all: Divide your time between Moab (Arches National Park) and Zion National Park. Schedule stops in Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef.

Where to stay? There are lodges in the national parks, but if you’re looking for a real adventure, try Under Canvas. It’s great for glamping. For a splurge, check out Amangiri, an upscale resort near Lake Powell.

Take it from Sam and Trent Scofield: “Last July, Kathryn helped us plan a very special trip for my son Sam (a high school sophomore) and me. We hiked The Narrows with a guide and learned and saw more than we ever could have just using a travel book. In Canyonlands and Moab, Kathryn set up guided, off-the-beaten-path adventures. The views were breathtaking.” —Trent Scofield

Q&A

TRAVEL WITH KATHRYN BURNS

Why do I need a travel agent? Can’t I just book everything myself online? The perks of a travel agent handling your reservation way outweigh the cost of the service. Most agents only ask for a small fee for expertise and planning, but the benefits to the traveler are enormous. At Brownell, we are part of the Virtuoso consortia. Virtuoso has partnerships with top hotels and tour companies and provides perks like upgrades on arrival, complimentary breakfast, and hotel credits for spa and dining. Additionally, agents have relationships with hoteliers and can open seemingly closed doors. There’s always someone to call (my work phone is my personal cell phone) if you hit a snag with the room or flight. Also good to know: An agent can help bypass long hold times for hotels and airlines. How have things changed since COVID? Does this make travelers need you even more? Yes! COVID has ultimately worked in the favor of the travel agent (though we’ve definitely paid our dues in canceling and rebooking since 2020). COVID has caused travelers that have never used an agent to reach out for the first time due to things such as testing logistics. Many people have figured out that it’s worth it to have someone serving as your advocate when embarking on a special journey. Aside from planning, what else do you do to help ensure a trip is successful? I start by scheduling an initial conversation so I can learn about what kind of trip you are seeking. Then I can offer insights you may not have thought about. I also meet with groups such as high school seniors who are traveling internationally to talk about risks. In addition, I have access to special tours, room amenities, and upgrades. And I have some sweet baseball hats that say “Kathryn Burns Travel” that I hand out pretty liberally.

A LITTLE ABOUT YOU: How did you get the travel bug? Prior to travel, I was in the wine business and worked for Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (champagne and cognac) and E&J Gallo. I traveled extensively to the wine regions of France, Italy, Napa, Australia, and New Zealand, among others. Eventually, I realized my love for travel matched my love for wine. I started with All Seasons in Mountain Brook Village, and then set up my own LLC as Kathryn Burns Travel. Now, I’m under the Brownell umbrella. Brownell is one of oldest and most prestigious agencies in the country. I wanted to work for the best. Most favorite trip ever? That’s hard to narrow down! Iove the mountains, anywhere out west, Italy, Austrailia, and New Zealand. I especially loved my time with my family in Costa Rica last summer (pictured above with husband Steven and daughter Katie in front of Arenal Volcano). On your bucket list? I have so many places I want to go! Alaska, Canada, Greece, and Antartica are at the top of my list right now. There are so many amazing destinations! My list changes all the time. Amanda Davis Ray & Poynor’s Managing Broker Amanda Davis helps both agents and clients succeed in buying and selling goals. What is your new role? After 24 years as a residential real estate agent, I have transitioned to Managing Broker at Ray & Poynor Properties. What does a Managing Broker do? I work with and manage Ray & Poynor agents, helping them connect sellers and buyers of homes. Why use Ray & Poynor? Our agents have unparalled knowledge about the market in the Birmingham area. And they provide top-notch service to each individual client. Buying or selling a home is most of our client’s number one priority, and Ray & Poynor agents treat and respect every client as if they were their only one. Our goal isn’t to achieve a certain number of homes listed or sold—it’s to serve our clients as a resource beyond a single transaction. Our success is measured by the relationships we build. Most asked questions? • From new agents: How long will it take to get started? • From seasoned agents: How can I make my business more successful? • From all agents: How can I help my client to compete and win in a multiple-offer situation? Considerations for becoming an agent? Being a successful real estate agent is a full-time profession, it’s not a part-time job. It is imperative that you learn the ins and outs of the market and the processes involved. Most importantly, you need to listen so you can understand your client’s needs.

ASK THE EXPERTS AT WILLOW HOMES Q: Should I remodel my current home or sell it? A: There are several key factors to consider when evaluating whether your current home is suitable for a remodel, such as age and structural integrity of your home, topography of the lot if you are adding on, and your remodeling goals and budget. Reach out and let's talk through both options. We are happy to come visit your home and assess the scope of the remodel to help guide your decision. If you decide selling and buying a different home is a better route, our experienced Real Estate partner, Art House, can provide you with a Home Valuation for selling your current house and then help you find a new home.

Q: Do I need to furnish my own set of house plans? A: Willow Homes is a Design-Build firm with the ability, experience, and creative skills necessary to help you design your new home or remodel project. Over the years, we’ve also worked with many architects around the city and can assist you in determining which one might be the right fit for you. If you’ve already taken the steps to have plans created, it’s time to have our in-house estimating team expertly price your job. Q: What does it cost to build new or remodel a home today? A: Pricing a custom home or remodeling project considers many aspects including but not limited to the condition of your current home, client design preferences, and architectural style. We are often asked to quote a basic price per square foot to add on or build new, but it can often be misleading to throw out a number sight unseen. The best next step, if you are considering remodeling or building new, is to schedule a site visit with our design and estimating team. During this initial visit, we will discuss a more detailed scope and cost for your project to help you determine if moving forward is right for you. And the best part? This initial visit is complimentary! Q: Okay! I’m ready to remodel! What is my next step? A: With over ten years of building and hundreds of custom projects on our resume, Willow Homes has the experience and tenured team to give your new home or remodel the creative energy it deserves. See our extensive portfolio of projects at GoWillowHomes.com for ideas and inspiration. While you’re there, drop us a line, tell us a little bit about your project, and we’ll be in touch! Can’t wait? Gill Johnson Appraisal What sets you apart?

Can a real estate agent help?

How long will it take?

Can an initial appraisal change?

We provide appraisals for residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Our family has been in the appraisal business for almost 50 years. We are a smaller company so we can give more personal attention to our clients. We allow ourselves five to seven business days for residential appraisals and up to four weeks for most commercial and industrial appraisals.

What is involved?

1025 Montgomery Highway Suite 107 Birmingham, AL 35216 205-979-0164 gilljohnsonapp@yahoo.com

First, we inspect the property. We inspect only what we can see, but we also consider data about the property. In-depth inspections are provided by home inspectors (residential properties) and specialty inspectors (commercial and industrial properties). We research comparable homes to estimate market value. For commercial and industrial properties, we consider potential income and cost information.

Find an agent who is familiar with the area and understands the process. Agents can access data, compare listings, and offer other insights. They can help with paperwork and negotiations, as well as refer you to mortgage companies, home inspectors and contractors. We may receive a reconsideration of value request if sales in the area do not support a value, the appraisal is not where the owner thinks the value should be, or when a value is less than the contract sale price.

When should I get an appraisal? It’s important to get an appraisal prior to closing to determine if the market supports the price. Sometimes sellers ask for an appraisal before listing, but clients should consult with their agent first. We can help if a home is for sale by owner. If we do appraise a house before it is sold, it cannot be used to secure a loan due to current industry policies and procedures.

Kathryn Dorlon Ray & Poynor real estate agent Kathryn Dorlon brings a passion for people to her work—and she really listens. What is your best asset as a realtor? I pride myself on getting to know my clients’ needs and wishes! I use a tailored approach with a unique plan to ensure that they have the best experience possible. You can learn a lot about what a client needs and wants by taking the time to listen. It is in this space that you learn how to make their dream come true. I am able to create vision for each of my clients, and in doing that it helps them better understand their dreams. How can you help someone with a transitional move? All moves are transitional, but some people might need specific services. As a member of the Transitional Move Experts Team, I hold a Seniors Real Estate Specialist designation. I am able to offer a menu of services to help clients who are downsizing or moving to assisted living, skilled care, or independent living. Why list with an agent? An agent has the ability to reach a larger market for the property, and that will help generate the best possible sales price. Listings require more time, knowledge, and expertise than most people realize. A transaction is complex with many financial and legal pitfalls, and an experienced agent can help you navigate all of these things. Ready to list your house? Call your realtor! A realtor can offer a fresh set of eyes on your home and provide smart ideas to prepare it for market. As I tell my sellers, a home could easily sell the first day it’s listed, so it is good to have a plan in place. If you are thinking about starting to look for a new home, now is the time to prepare your current home. About Ray & Poyner Ray & Poynor is a trusted real estate firm serving the Birmingham metro area since 2010. Ready to sell? The Birmingham real estate market remains hot, but the inventory of listings remains tight which makes it a great time to sell. Before listing, is important to get your home in tip-top shape. Declutter and depersonalize your rooms so prospective buyers can imagine their things in it. When painting, stick to neutral colors and wall decor. Maximize the home’s curb appeal. Buyers may not even come through the door of a home with faded paint, dirty windows, and an overgrown yard. Putting in the work up front will pay off in the long run!

Statewide Title One of the oldest title companies in Birmingham, Statewide Title strives to provide the best service possible while making customers their number one priority. About Statewide Title: Statewide Title was founded in 1991 and recently celebrated 30 years in business. At Statewide Title, we cover not only the Birmingham area, but the entire State of Alabama for Commercial and Residential Title Insurance and Closings, which sets us apart from all of our competition. Why do I need title insurance? Every property has a history, and that history can affect your right to own and enjoy your home. Title insurance provides protection from financial loss due to defects in title, such as a previous owner’s debt, unpaid judgments/liens, unpaid taxes, and assessments, etc.

Do I need title insurance for new construction? Newly constructed properties still require a thorough search, as the land has likely changed hands many times, and there is no guarantee that subcontractors or suppliers have not placed liens on the property. Who orders title insurance? Title insurance is ordered from the lender/loan officer or real estate agent involved in the sale of the property. Only a licensed title agent can provide title insurance for a property transaction. How long does it take to get title insurance? At Statewide Title, we generally produce a title commitment in about 2-3 days.

Our job is to show up with solutions that take the stress out of buying and selling and ultimately make it an enjoyable experience.” —Roxanne Hale, owner/broker, Art House

Art House “At Art House, our agents are problem solvers,” says owner/broker Roxanne Hale. “Our team of agents and associate brokers prioritizes the human side of real estate. Many times, Clients are looking for homes in the midst of some other big life event.” Because the real estate process is always shifting and evolving, Roxanne’s team also insists on thinking creatively to meet their Clients’ needs, even in a tough market. Art House Sales Manager Savannah Johnson says, “Every year brings a new challenge to the market, and it’s our goal to find useful strategies that enable our Clients to buy or sell their home successfully no matter the market difficulties. If you are looking to buy or sell in the market today, we hope you’ll let us put our skills and experience to work for you.”

Best place to buy? Nearly every area of Birmingham and each segment of residential housing is doing fantastic. However should we experience a dip in housing demand, we encourage home shoppers to focus on areas that work for their lives and also have a solid sales history. Are we in a buyer’s or seller’s market? Statistically, it’s a seller’s market. But, it’s also a great time to buy. Inventory is tight and prices are going up, but right now, low-interest rates are the stars of the housing market. Indicators suggest that rates will go up into 2023, and that can do far more damage to a buyer’s purchasing power than rising home prices ever could. Even a 1% increase in interest rates could knock many buyers out of homeownership. Borrowing money today is cheap. Next year may not be the case. Buying considerations: After a buyer has narrowed their search down to an area, price point, and size, their focus should be finding a home that will bring them joy. Consider the floor plan, lot, yard, and overall

Roxanne Hale Broker and Owner of Art House 205-352-7742 soldbyarthouse.com

well-being of the house. Has it been cared for? Would it do well in an inspection? Are there water issues? Is the roof, mechanicals, and structure in good shape? Should I pass on inspection? If you don’t have a cash reserve, as well as the time, interest, or the skills for home maintenance, it’s best to get an inspection. You’ll want to know exactly what you’re buying before you close. In today’s competitive market, that might mean missing out to another buyer on a particular listing. However, missing out is better than risking your peace of mind.

I love the ease of a small vacation rental or second home. Whether you are one step from

the laundry room or two steps from the pantry, it’s all there at an arm’s reach. Life just seems simpler. The recipes in this issue are perfect for that kind of living. You probably already have most of the ingredients on hand (such as flour or vegetable oil), and there is little cleanup required. I was amazed at how easily the Shrimpand-Corn Chowder came together in one pot in well under an hour. You can make the West Indies Salad ahead (it needs to marinate for at least 8 hours), and serve it in individual jars for a quick lunch or sunset appetizer. Easy Peasy Crab Cakes—well, the name says it all. You can assemble and sauté them in no time. For the BBQ Shrimp Bake, all you need is one baking dish. And guess what? It serves as the centerpiece too! This spring, let’s simplify the prep work and enjoy more time with friends and family. Here’s to daylight savings time, sandals, and easy living!

Sprinkle the flour over the top of the onion mixture, stirring constantly for about 1 minute. Slowly add milk, whisking constantly. Add the fresh corn, cream-style corn, and cayenne. Bring to a boil, and let bubble until thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in shrimp, and cook until shrimp turn pink, about 3 more minutes. Turn heat to low, and stir in half-and-half. Garnish with crumbled, cooked bacon and green onion tops. Add a dash of hot sauce, if desired. Serve immediately.

Easy Peasy Crab Cakes SERVES 4 TO 6

1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat ¹⁄³ cup mayonnaise ¾ cup panko breadcrumbs 1 large egg, beaten 2 to 3 tablespoons freshly chopped 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard parsley 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Vegetable or canola oil for frying ½ teaspoon hot sauce Remoulade Sauce (see recipe below) Salt and freshly ground black pepper Lemon wedges to taste In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, egg, Dijon, Worcestershire, and hot sauce; season with salt and pepper. Set aside. In a medium bowl, stir together crabmeat, panko, and parsley. Fold into mayonnaise mixture, and then form into 8 patties. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add oil, rotating pan to coat evenly, and heat until shimmering. Add crab cakes, and cook, in batches, until golden and crispy, about 3 to 5 minutes per side. Serve with Remoulade Sauce and lemon wedges.

Remoulade Sauce MAKES 1 ½ CUPS

1¼ cups mayonnaise ¼ cup Creole mustard 1 tablespoon paprika 1 teaspoon Creole or Cajun seasoning 2 teaspoons prepared horseradish 2 teaspoons dill pickle juice 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1 large garlic clove, minced Mix all the ingredients in a medium bowl. Chill for several hours in the refrigerator before serving.

Learn from Leslie: I like to chill the formed patties on a baking sheet in the refrigerator for an hour or two before cooking. It makes them hold their shape nicely. They also can be made up to 24 hours in advance of sautéing.

IN THE SHOP... with

TROY RHONE

Garden designer Troy Rhone has long had an affinity for garden antiquities. Now he’s expanded his business to a new shop in Mountain Brook Village—and his black lab Lily is right by his side. Text by LY D I A S O M E R V I L L E Photography by M A R Y F E H R

or gardeners who gravitate toward old-world style, Troy Rhone’s new store in Mountain Brook Village offers one-stop shopping for the planted garden, along with the accents that bring it to life. In Troy’s garden designs, containers have always played a big role, from ones large enough to hold trees to smaller vessels that perfectly grace tabletops. His current inventory includes planters by Willy Guhl, a Swiss industrial designer. Customers will also find an antique miniature greenhouse from Belgium filled with seasonal plants and ornaments, bamboo chairs from the 1950s, and an 18th-century console from Avignon, France. In addition, the shop showcases statuary in the forms of putti and animals. These are the sorts of garden ornaments that create impact in a garden, each a unique memento from a moment in garden history. Troy also displays oversized charcoal botanicals by California artist Emily Farish, made exclusively for his shop. With the store’s constantly evolving inventory, there’s always something new to behold—or to bring home to your own garden. “Each one-of-a-kind garden antique is handselected and representative of elements I use in my own home. The shop is a space to share my design aesthetic and to provide a source for these inheritable keepsakes.” 90 BH&G | m a rc h . a p r i l 2 0 2 2
