Proom. Kids make messes and they grow and change quickly, so the room has to be amenable to each stage of a child’s life. To some, that may mean disposable furniture and lots of plastic, but designer Virginia McCary has a di erent opinion. In this girl’s room, she proves that practical can also be pretty.

To create a space that will evolve, Virginia designed a daybed that can easily be converted into a pair of twin headboards. She also chose fabric in a color that could work well in other spaces. “ e green Cowtan & Tout ticking stripe would also suit a playroom, a boy’s room, or a guest room,” she says.

With green as her base color, Virginia selected coordinating hues, prints, and nishes for other design elements. Pillows and drapery in a oral pattern by Leah O’Connell lend a feminine touch. Multiple coats of high-gloss paint in a terracotta hue bring a sheen to the ceiling and trim. Underfoot, an indoor/outdoor rug from Hiltz-Lauber shrugs o spills. e antique secretary, a nd from Henhouse Antiques, is an instant heirloom. “It’s a place for homework and crafts now but can serve many other purposes in di erent spaces down the road,” Virginia says.
