My wife favors our 10-year-old son over our 14-yearold daughter. To even things out, I find myself spending more time with our daughter than our son.

My wife excuses all of our son’s behavior problems and takes his side whether he is right or wrong. As a result, he is immature for his age. He cries if he doesn’t get his way, even when his friends are present. My wife showers him with clothes and toys, and he has few responsibilities at home. My wife will cook anything he wants to eat, while my daughter has to eat what is served to the family. What do you think about this situation?

This sounds like a marital problem that started with the birth of the children. Of course, the psychological issues that led to the marital problem began long before the marriage or the births. Instead of the attachment and alliance being between the adult marital partners, the children have become the source of companionship for the adults. There are strong parent/child ties and weak husband/wife ties. Mom is getting her emotional fulfillment from her relationship with her son, while dad has bonded to his daughter to fill the void left by the emotionally absent wife. When this happens, the children are thrown into roles for which they are developmentally ill prepared. A parent who is trying to buy the affections of her child cannot set realistic rules for responsibility and behavior. Thus your son is left without guidance. He has too much power over your wife, as he can demand anything from her with the veiled threat of withdrawing his love if she doesn’t meet his desires. It is quite common for a boy between the ages of three and six to say some version of “Mommy, I want to marry you.” In a healthy family, the dad steps in to be with his wife and the child returns to the role of the son. The son then learns to become like the father so that he can win the affection of girls his own age later in life. When the dad doesn’t step in or when the mom rejects her husband in favor of the son, the child is left to fill shoes that are too big for him. He remains attached to his mom and is unable to move on in development to leave the family into which he was born, to start

a family of his own. Thus, the mom’s attachment to her son stifles his growth and therefore is a selfish love that is not in the son’s best interest. The brother/sister relationship is in trouble as well. There is little that fuels sibling rivalry more forcefully than parental favoritism. The mother’s open favoritism will create anger in the less favored child, but even the favored child loses. He realizes that if mom can be unfair to his sister, then mom’s love for him might not be unconditional either, and he too might lose mom if he doesn’t do her bidding. In some ways, your daughter is the luckier child. Her mom seems to be able to set appropriate parental limits for her, while your son is being led to believe that he is the center of the universe. Peers, teachers, and, in the future, a wife will not see him in this way. He will struggle with rejections lifelong unless he can bear his share of the load. You daughter might hurt from her mother’s rejection, but she might gain from the autonomy she gets from mom’s inattention.

Solar Power Installed at The Altamont School Eagle Solar & Light of Birmingham announces its latest solar installation at The Altamont School. The company recently completed the 14.7 kW ground-mounted Solar System with the final electrical interconnect to the 3 Phase, 208V utility service. “The new solar arrays will not only help us reduce our monthly consumption of power, they will also provide many outstanding educational opportunities for our students,” says Sarah Whiteside, head of school. “Altamont’s global initiative theme for this academic year is ‘Energy Resources and Climate Change.’ The solar arrays are one more way we can express that theme and incorporate environmental stewardship into the culture, and practices, of our school.” Sam Yates, president of Eagle Solar and Light, estimates the solar array will generate 22,110 kilowatt-hours a year, saving thousands on power bills. The solar array will provide approximately one-fifth of the school’s daytime energy consumption needs.

John Carroll Dance Teams Win Top National and State Titles John Carroll Catholic’s varsity, junior varsity and middle school dance teams received top honors in the 2017 UDA (Universal Dance Association) National and State Dance Team Championships! The John Carroll Middle School dance team won first place in the Junior High Hip Hop category at the championships, held at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando. They also earned the same title in 2014, and have been nationally ranked in the top 5 every year since. John Carroll is the only school that holds a UDA national title in the state of Alabama. ASFA Students named Presidential Scholars

The John Carroll Middle School dance team won first place in the Junior

Two students at the Alabama School of Fine Arts have been notified that they are U.S. Presidential Scholar candidates. Lindsey Waggoner, a senior in the music department, and Emily Amin, a senior in the creative writing department were selected by the U.S. Department of Education for this honor. All high school seniors in the U.S. who took either the ACT or the SAT are automatically considered for participation in the U.S. Presidential Scholar program. The U.S. Department of Education then choses the top 20 male examinees and top 20 female examinees from each state to be candidates. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

In addition, these talented young girls also won the 2017 UDA Alabama Dance Team Championship in hip hop and jazz categories this year, and took home the best costume award for their hip hop routine at the state competition, which was held at Spain Park High School at the end of January. More honors were awarded John Carroll during the national competition when the junior varsity dance team won third place in hip hop and fourth place in jazz. During their state competition, they also won first place in hip hop and were awarded second place in the jazz category. The varsity team placed 11th in the extremely tough Small Varsity Hip Hop division at the national competition this year, but not before winning the Alabama state title by placing first in hip hop and first in jazz. They also won best choreography for jazz dance during the Alabama competition.

Battling Croup in Children Courtesy of Children’s of Alabama Croup, while a common illness, can be a scary situation for children and their parents. It’s caused by a virus, says Peily Soong, M.D., a pediatrician at Pediatrics East. “The most common virus is one that’s called parainfluenza, but other viruses can cause it like the common cold or flu,” he says. The symptoms of croup are relatively unmistakable and include a distinct cough that is described as sounding like a seal’s bark. It’s often worse at nighttime. Other symptoms that may accompany croup include cold-like symptoms such as a fever and runny nose, as well as a raspy voice. “One thing about this illness is that it affects the throat area,” Soong explains. “It can cause swelling in the throat, which can cause something called stridor, a real wheezy sound that they can have while breathing. And that’s something to worry about.” Parents should act quickly when their child demonstrates the symptoms of croup and particularly stridor, but often the symptoms can be handled at home. The key is helping the child breathe in moist air. Soong offers these tips for treating croup: • Turn on a hot shower, allow the child to breathe in the steam. • If it’s cold outside, take the child outside to breathe in cool air. • If it’s warm, open the freezer door and have them breathe the cold air from the freezer. In many cases, these actions can help alleviate the immediate symptoms of croup, however, it’s still a good idea to visit the pediatrician the next morning so that a steroid can be prescribed to reduce throat swelling.

There are times when croup becomes an emergency situation. Get immediate care if: • Child has trouble breathing with no relief. • Has stridor that is getting worse. • Difficulty swallowing. • Drooling. • Shows signs of a “hot mouth” • Is pale or bluish around the mouth The good news is that in most cases, children can recover quickly from croup with no lasting problems. With proper attention and recommended treatment, parents and their child can rest easier.

Never open or forward any emails from persons you do not know. Even if you receive an email from a known friend, it may contain a virus. Email accounts are often hacked. There are viruses that will send an email from your computer to everyone in your address book on your computer to spread the virus. You should have current virus protection software installed on your computer that checks all your incoming and outgoing emails. In addition, you should routinely change your passwords for your computer, email and other login accounts to protect your identity. Ways to Identify & Prevent Choking in Children By Emily Reed

When Lani Meek signed up for a CPR training class before the birth of her first son, she had no idea the tips covered in the class would eventually save her child’s life. “I, like any first-time parent, wanted to make sure I was prepared for everything,” Meek says. “I am a teacher, and I had students who had different medical needs, so I knew the importance of knowing first aid. “I realized when I got pregnant with my first child that I was not totally prepared in terms of knowing how to perform CPR. I saw an advertisement 10 | birminghamparent | april 2017

in our church bulletin one day of a CPR class being offered, so I decided to take it with my husband,” she explains. Meek took the class, and placed a pamphlet about ways to handle choking on the inside of her kitchen pantry in case there was ever a need. “I think with any parent you always think it will never happen to you,” Meek says. “Learning CPR is something that you are thankful you know, but you think in the back of your mind that you won’t ever really need to put it into practice.” Shortly after her son turned a year old, Meek let him have a miniature vanilla

wafer to eat as he sat roughly two feet away from her while she washed dishes in the family’s kitchen. “I noticed shortly after I had given him the wafer that he was not making any noise,” Meek says. “I looked over at him and noticed he was looking at me with panic in his face. He was not blue, but he was definitely getting there. I flipped him over and immediately did the Heimlich maneuver. I really just went into instinct mode. I told my husband to call 911, which we he did, but after three times of performing the Heimlich we were able to get the wafer dislodged, and everything

was fine. I think because we took the CPR class we were able to stay really calm, and focus on getting the piece of food dislodged from our son’s throat,” she adds. Meek is just one of many parents opting to learn infant and children CPR, as children commonly choke on toys, food, or small objects they place in their mouths. “We have a lot of new moms that hear about things that can happen where a child can be in distress, and they do not want to be caught unaware,” says Debbie Moss, a CPR instructor with the American Heart Association. “It is something that you really don’t want to be ill-equipped in knowing because the chances of a child choking are really common, and it can happen so easily.” Moss offers free CPR classes at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. “The training we offer is if a situation comes up where the infant’s heart stops, or they get choked, the parents will then know what to do,” Moss explains. “The classes oftentimes have a lot of new parents, but we also have parents who are looking for a refresher if they are having another child, babysitters, grandparents, or anyone who is in the position of taking care of a child.” Moss says the class she offers is not a certification course, but most parents do not need to be certified, they just need to be knowledgeable about what to do. “If it is your child, you will do whatever you can to make sure they are OK,” Moss adds. “I obviously hope with each class I teach that the information I am going over will never be needed on a child, but after each class session wraps up we always pray that we will be able to recall everything we have learned in the class if the need comes up.”

A free CPR class available at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church will be April 26 from 6-7 p.m. Anyone interested in attending the course should call the church at 871-7324 to make a reservation. In a video distributed by Children’s of Alabama on choking, Debbie Coshatt, a nurse educator in the patient’s health and safety department at the hospital, identified ways to determine if a child is choking. Those signs include: • A child is turning blue or pale. • A child opens his mouth and cannot breathe, talk or cough. • Showing the universal sign for choking, which is when a child holds the neck with one or both hands.

Coshatt demonstrates in the video that, for anyone suspected of choking over the age of 1, to place hands above their belly button, make a fist, and do inward and upward motions. “You are coughing for that person,” Coshatt explains in the video. “You keep doing that until the object comes out. A lot of parents are oftentimes too gentle when doing this, but it is better to be firm and potentially break a rib, because you are saving a life.” Tips to help avoid a child choking include making sure kids eat while seated, and avoid laughing or talking when eating. Also, do not give children under 5 hard candy or nuts, and when feeding children foods such as hot dogs, carrots or grapes, cut them lengthwise and crosswise. (continued on following page)

Barrie Woods, CPR coordinator for the city of Hoover, says people never know when they will need to perform CPR. “It can be on a child, or even an adult,” Woods says. “You could be at a store and find someone in need of CPR, and have to act in an instant. The skills you learn are not just for your family, they can be used on anyone.” Woods helps teach classes offered through Hoover Fire Department to members of the community as well as health care providers. “We have found time and time again that people are able to help save lives after they learn how to properly administer CPR,” Woods adds. The Hoover Fire Department offers American Heart Association CPR 12 | birminghamparent | april 2017

certification classes for the general public during the first, second and third Saturdays of each month. The classes are held at Hoover Fire Station No. 7, located at 100 Inverness Parkway, off of Valleydale Road near Highway 280. There is a $15 registration fee, and class size is limited to 20 individuals each session. “We have babysitters, coaches, teachers, fitness instructors, scout leaders and parents take the course,” Woods says. “The classes are always well-attended.” For more information about the class, call 444-7683 or email woodsb@ ci.hoover.al.us. “When my second child was born, I took a CPR class again because I wanted

to brush up on the things I learned when I had my first child,” Meeks says. “If it is not something you are doing every day, you have a tendency to put it in the back of your mind, but it is such an important thing to know. Mastering the Art of

There’s always flak over breast feeding in public. Some moms are bold; others are nervous and shy. Experts agree that breastfeeding supports the healthy development of your baby, your overall wellbeing and establishes a lasting bond with your little one. And breastfeeding is also conveniently portable. But if you’re like many new moms, embarrassment and a fear of judgment may make you nervous about nursing in public. “Feeding baby on the go is very doable and takes just a little know-how and practice to get the hang of it,” says lactation consultant Marji Stark, BAEd, IBCLC. Here’s how:

Start slow. Give yourself time to adjust to new motherhood and your baby’s feeding habits. Plan to keep your outings short, nurse your infant before you leave home and again before you get out of the car. “Practice at home in front of the mirror,” says Kelly Josephine, RN, IBCLC. For the first few outings, choose a low-stress environment, such as a park. Plan ahead. As you get more comfortable with breastfeeding and predicting when your baby will want to eat, you’ll feel less anxiety when you head out. Wear clothing that makes nursing easy. Many moms opt for nursing tops or tanks with an overshirt. Light scarves or blankets can also provide coverage. Pack an extra shirt in case of leaks or spills. “There are many breastfeeding covers that vary in complexity from the type of fabric, slings and other customizations. Find one that works for you,” adds Josephine, who recommends the website www.babywearinginternational.com. Know where to go. Ask other nursing moms

where they breastfeed when they’re out and about. Patronize area businesses and family attractions friendly toward nursing mothers. Look for quiet spots to feed your baby, like clean dressing rooms in department stores and booths or corner tables in restaurants that offer some privacy. Avoid bathrooms, Stark says. “Babies should not have to eat in a restroom – adults never do.” You can also seek shelter in your car or ask a friend or family member to help “shield” you while you breastfeed, Josephine says.

Reach out for support. “New mothers need to be

around new mothers,” Stark says. Most area hospitals offer weekly educational meet-ups for nursing mothers where they can find encouragement and support from other moms. “Mothers who attend a breastfeeding support group gain confidence, are more comfortable nursing in public and tend to nurse longer than mothers who do not,” she adds. To find additional support, check out your local La Leche League, Facebook groups like

A smile and a thumbs up to a mother nursing on a park bench or at the table next to you goes a long way,” Stark says.

Know the law. When you know your rights, you’ll feel more confident with your choices. Forty-nine states, Washington D.C. and the Virgin Islands allow moms to breastfeed in any public or private location. (Other than exempting nursing moms from jury duty, Idaho is the only state with no laws that protect moms from nursing in public). “Help me!” How many of us would hesitate to respond to the desperate plea of a child in harm’s way? Surely not most of us. If we heard the call for help, if we were aware of the danger, if we were able, we would not refuse to aid a child in distress. And yet, every day, children are abused, neglected and sadly to say, even die because their silent cries are not heard and therefore not heeded. In the early 1980s, the beginnings of a National Child Abuse Prevention Month formed. Today, April is recognized as that month where focus and awareness is on how children can be better protected from the effects of abuse, maltreatment, and neglect. In 1989, a grandmother tied a blue ribbon to her car antenna as she mourned the death of her three-year-old grandson who died as the result of abuse at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend. The Blue Ribbon Campaign has grown over the years to serve 24 | birminghamparent | april 2017

as a symbol of children’s lives lost due to abuse and neglect. Awareness can help save the life of a child. Awareness can help prevent child abuse and neglect. Awareness can help us hear the cries for help when no words are being spoken.

What is child abuse?

At what point is action required? Exactly what should we do when we suspect a child is being harmed, at risk or being neglected? Who is required to contact the authorities and exactly what authorities should be contacted? The Child Abuse and Prevention Treatment Act defines child abuse and neglect or child maltreatment as: “Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.”

How can I be certain that a child has been abused or neglected?

While reporting a possible child abuse situation should never be taken lightly, the child’s well-being must be the weightier of matters. According to the Alabama Department of Human Resources, “certainty is not required. In most instances, the only way you could be absolutely certain that a child had been abused or neglected would be if the parent or other person admitted it. All that is required is a reasonable suspicion that a child is a victim of abuse or neglect. After investigating the report, the department determines whether abuse and/or neglect occurred.” There are mandatory reporters of child abuse and neglect such as teachers, doctors, etc. However, anyone can and should report the suspicion of a child being maltreated. In that case, you can contact your local sheriff’s office or police station and they will contact DHR, or you can contact DHR directly yourself:

Some of the children I fostered are now grown with families of their own. Some have been able to forgive, but by in large family relations are so dysfunctional that even when they try to leave the hurt behind, the hurt hangs on to their hearts. Recently I spoke with a former foster daughter and she and I discussed one of her greatest fears, which was turning out like her birth mom. Although we fostered and loved her and her adoptive family has loved her and helped her, she can’t stop trying to figure out how her birth mother could do the things she did. I told her she won’t be able to understand because it wasn’t understandable. But there are steps she can take to make sure she doesn’t fall into the same pit such as counseling and asking for help when feeling overwhelmed.

Now that we know how to recognize it and how to report it, what steps can we take to prevent child abuse? Statistics show there are certain factors that make a family more at risk for child abuse like a history of abuse, violence or even poverty. A child who was abused as a child is more likely to abuse as a parent. But there are preventive measures. We can help promote awareness by something as simple as a blue ribbon. We can attend events, we can donate to services for families at risk and we can refuse to look away when the signs of abuse are evident.

IT TAKES TWO TO TANGO:

Fun Games for your Couples Baby Shower Baby showers are traditionally for women only. If you see a man (or two) at the shower, they are usually headed out to watch the game in the bar. That leaves the women to have lunch, ooh and ahh over baby items and listen to every mother at the table tell the story of her own pregnancies and labor horrors. Been there, done that. Just like when you were in high school, a party is more fun if you invite the boys. If you don’t want to risk losing them to the TV in the other room, give them a beer and bring out their competitive side. Here’s a few games to do that:

Where’s my mom and dad? This is a great icebreaker game for a group that doesn’t know each other well. Write the name of celebrity parents on a sticker and put it on the backs of all the female guests. For the male guests, their stickers will have the child’s name. The object is to go around the room, asking yes or no questions to figure out who you are and find your parent or child. Conjoined diaper changers. Parenting is a

two-person job so this game shows how well

you work together. Gather a baby doll, baby clothes and a disposable diaper and put them on a table. Two people stand together facing the table with their arms behind each other’s back, leaving only their outer hand free. Working as a team, diaper and dress the baby (treating it as if it is a real baby). Let the mom-to-be judge who is the best dressed baby.

Who can finish their bottle first? Purchase cheap baby bottles with larger-sided holes in the nipples. Fill the bottle with beer or apple juice and race to see who can finish their bottle first. It’s a lot harder than it looks! Bobbing for Pacifiers. A baby shower twist on the classic bobbing for apples game. Fill a large tub with water and add 10 pacifiers. Let every bobber get three turns to see if he can pick up a pacifier the right way in his mouth. Feed the baby. Have a couple sit across from

each other in chairs. Put a bib on the baby and give the parent a jar of baby food and a baby spoon. Racing against the other teams,

the object is to feed your baby the whole jar as quickly as possible, but there is a catch. Both the parent and the baby will be blindfolded.

How does she do it? Create an empathy belly by filling a large backpack with potatoes to equal between 20 and 30 pounds. Put several of the potatoes in the front zipper of the back pack and leave it open. Adjust the straps so the backpack hangs lower and strap on the backpack on their chest to simulate a pregnant belly. Now, ask the guest to get up from a seated position on the floor, walk 10 feet, sit down to tie their shoes and then walk over to pick up three small items from the floor (like a Lego or coin) – all without dropping their potatoes.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS are a Fun Addition at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo By Carol Muse Evans

If you’re headed to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach or somewhere nearby this spring and summer, don’t forget to plan a trip to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, where you can experience some terrific, up close and personal animal encounters. My daughter and I recently visited on her birthday because she wanted to meet the sloths. She adores sloths, and we were able to pay a small extra fee to pet Sid and Sylvia, an experience she will never forget. She was able to touch then, pet them, and learn about what they eat, their habitat, native home, etc. It’s a great learning experience as well as fun. There are also kangaroo, lemur, tamandua and reptile encounters available. The cost for the sloths was $10 each, in addition to regular zoo admission. Most require a parent to go along, and photos are welcomed. However, it is important to follow the directions of the zookeeper for your safety and the safety of the animals. It is a good idea to call ahead to make sure the animals are available for an encounter on the day you want to visit. Register for your encounter as you enter the zoo so your time can be scheduled.
