Each year, our Birmingham Parent Family Favorites awards are more and more popular. We have more participation, more votes, and add more categories. Now in our 11th year, our awards are often emulated by other publications, but as the original local Favorites Awards, we remain true to our process – you, the reader, are in charge of the nominations and the votes – and YOU choose all the winners. This has happened in a big way this year – with the largest number of votes EVER! For shoppers, a personal referral to a business can’t be beat – and that’s a big part of what the Family Favorites Awards are all about. Some winners this year have never won before, and some are repeat winners. If a business received an Honorable Mention, it’s no consolation prize – it means the voting was very close! That’s why you only see a few Honorable Mention awards – not every category was that close. There is a great honor in being named an Honorable Mention in our awards. Just like last year, we’ve organized the categories again to make the announcements more reader friendly. And you can reference it all year long in the digital edition at www.birminghamparent.com. And for the first time ever, check out our Preschool Little Learners guide , starting on page 32. It’s a guide to keep all year long, when you may need to find a preschool, mother’s day out program, etc. Don’t miss our Destination Guide’s patriotic visit to Washington, D.C. It’s a trip you can make ANY time of year, too. Be sure to save the date for our Happy Healthy Kids Fair, coinciding with our August Back-toSchool issue, on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, at the Riverchase Galleria. Admission is FREE. Great giveaways and local entertainment with WDJC Radio. Vendor booths and sponsorships are still available for this popular event.

Parenting with Dr. Friedman

Q:

My 12-year-old daughter recently underwent surgery for a brain tumor. We are grateful that she did not have fatal cancer, but a benign tumor still had to be

removed. She is now very different from the child we had before. She is like a young child in her demands and in her inability to do for herself. I find it very hard to connect the child she was before with the child she is now. Do you have any advice on how to get her back to her former behavior? After months or sometimes years of symptoms, it is often a relief to have a tangible medical diagnosis. A diagnosis seems to imply a plan of action. Most people are more comfortable if they have something they can do to solve a problem. It is easier than being a passive victim of circumstance. The acute stage of the illness typically brings the support of friends, neighbors and fellow church members. There are gifts, visits and cards, but after a while all these go away or lessen in frequency. In the end, the family is left with the illness and its aftermath. A diagnosis comes with a certain level of understanding of the problem. The physician explains the treatment plan and the immediately expected problems related to the interventions. Yet the problem list seems to grow as time passes. The relief at the diagnosis and treatment gives way to a realization that life and child will never be as it was before. You are beginning this phase now. Most children do continue to regain function for a period of time after brain surgery. The extent of your daughter›s deficits and recovery may not be clear for up to two years. Sometimes physical or occupational therapy or cognitive interventions can speed improvement. Some things just take time. While it is important to maintain hope, it is also important to understand that some things will never again be as they were before. Although your daughter is still alive, she is not the same person she was. You may need to mourn the loss of that child and get to know and accept the child she is now. Even with your best effort and that of her doctors, she may not improve to the level of independence, maturity and abstract thought that she had attained before her surgery. Brain changes change not only function but also personality.

Accept this acute phase of your daughter's recovery as a time to regroup. Think about options for an altered lifestyle for both you and your daughter. Let go of some of the hopes and dreams you had for her and begin to create new ones on a different scale. Not every child can grow up to be a president or a sports star. Many children bring joy just because they love you. Brain changes can cause regression and your daughter may not be independent for some time, if ever. Decide if you can be her caretaker, or if you need residential or in-home help with her care. At the very least, you will need some respite help so that you have some time for yourself. Once you have come to an understanding of your child's new capacities, you can begin to shape those behaviors that are within her control. Behavior that is reinforced is repeated. Reward those behaviors that you want to see again. Vivian K. Friedman Ph. D. is a child and family psychologist at UAB, Department of Psychiatry. American Academy of Pediatric Recommends No Fruit Juice Before Age 1 Children under one year of age should not drink fruit juice because it can lead to too much weight gain and tooth decay, among other health problems, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In an updated policy statement published May 22, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends: • No juice before age 1 • For toddlers ages 1-3, up to half a cup per day (4 oz.) • For children ages 4-6, up to three-quarters cup per day (6 oz.) • For children and teens ages 7-18, up to 1 cup per day (8 oz.) • Do not put juice in a sippy cup or bottle that the child carries around • After age 1, offer your child whole fruit, which has both the vitamins and fiber that children need.

Safeguard Your Summer Sizzle with these Grill Tips It’s tough to beat a burger hot off the grill in your own backyard. But are you ready? Grills, hibachis, and barbecues can increase your risk of having a fire, according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA). Every year, grill fires cause about $37 million in property damage. Grills should only be used outdoors where there is plenty of space around them. Place the grill away from your home, at least three feet from siding, railings, or anything else that can burn. Follow these USFA safety tips to keep your backyard sizzling but safe: • Stay close to your grill whenever it is lit. • Keep children and pets at least three feet away. The grill exterior gets very hot and stays hot enough to burn skin after the fire is out. • Clean the grill often to remove grease and burned food. • If you cook with charcoal, put the cooled coals into a metal can with a lid. Store the can at least three feet from your home and anything that can burn. • If you use a gas grill, check the gas tank and hose for leaks before using it the first time each year. Put a soap and water mixture on the hose and connection. If there are leaks, you will see little bubbles. If you see bubbles, turn off the gas and grill. Have your grill checked by a professional. When you use your gas grill, remember the following tips: • Open the gas grill lid before you light it. • Don’t use a grill or gas tank that isn’t working properly. For more home fire safety information, visit USFA online at usfa.fema.gov/prevention/. Follow USFA on Twitter at @USfire and on Facebook at facebook. com/usfire. 8 | birminghamparent | july 2017

Youths’ Use of Technology Poses Safety Risk More than a third of children ages 12-17 own smartphones, and their preoccupation with technology puts them at risk while walking, bicycling and driving. A new UAB study underscores the need to keep working toward developing policies and interventions to reduce distracted behaviors, according to a new UAB study. Transportation-related injuries are the leading cause of fatalities among children 5-24, and according to a team from UAB’s Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, these statistics are what make this a particularly pressing issue, and one worth careful evaluation to discover potential solutions. The researchers’ analysis investigated 41 studies: 35 studies looking at distracted driving in youth up to age 25, five studies on distracted walking among youth pedestrians, and one study on distracted bicycling in youth ages 16-25. They found that distractions exerted a small to medium detrimental effect on children’s crash risk as pedestrians or drivers. The study on bicycling found that riders use compensatory strategies, such as slowing down or stopping, when using mobile technology. That study did not examine crash risk. The team found that texting, which takes the eyes and mind off the road, was particularly dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers. In several of the studies they analyzed, texting significantly slowed driver and pedestrian response times. Research on driving speeds had more varied results; three studies found that speeds were significantly slower when drivers were engaged in visually demanding tasks, while two studies noted short increases in speed during visual phone interactions. For both youth drivers and pedestrians, interacting with phones created a larger threat to safety than talking on the phone.

YOU DESERVE YOUR BEST SKIN. Arby’s Gives Back: Free Meals for Kids in Need The Arby’s Foundation is helping at-risk children in Birmingham receive free summer meals through its successful “School’s Out, Food’s In” program. As part of this initiative, Birmingham City Schools children who rely on meal assistance during the school year received meal cards in May for 10 free Arby’s kids meals throughout the summer. The 15,000 cards equates to 150,000 redeemable Arby’s meals to children in need. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), while more than 22 million school children in America receive free or reduced-price school lunches during the school year, only nearly four million of those kids receive a free summer meal when school is out. Last year, the Arby’s Foundation provided access to more than 1.6 million meals to children in need across the country. The foundation was founded more than 30 years ago and has donated more than $80 million to various youth-related causes. It has focused on childhood hunger since 2011.

N.E. Miles Jewish Day School Students Win First Place in McWane Science Center’s Celebrate Science Competition The N.E. Miles Jewish Day School in Birmingham was one of 11 local schools to participate in the McWane Science Center’s Celebrate Science Competition, and the students’ “Brilliant Buoyancy” exhibit prototype earned first place. Their prototype will be on display at the McWane Center, and the school earned $1,500 in prize money. Fourth and fifth grade students visited McWane early in the year to learn what makes a successful exhibit. After their visit, students began to brainstorm their own exhibit concepts. As a class, students came up with three different ideas: buoyancy, sound vibrations, and lightning. Students then created display boards for each concept. Elizabeth Gargus, a McWane education specialist, visited the school to hear about the three ideas. In her feedback, she emphasized the teamwork aspect of scientific research. Students narrowed in on “Brilliant Buoyancy” and began constructing their final prototype, where they used recycled materials found around the school and worked together to create the ideal design.

ANNOUNCING THE BIRMINGHAM PARENT 2017

FamilyFavorites AWARD WINNERS

Compiled by Lori Pruitt & Bethany Adams Hunley

What Are Your Family Favorites? Who Does Your Family Like the Most? Sometimes as a parent we rely on friends and family to tell us what is the best of the best. Many times you are introduced to a favorite by word of mouth. Or you see an ad for a spot, go there, and then share with everyone else how great it is. All of us have opinions on what the “best” really is – whether it is your favorite beach destination, your favorite place for frozen yogurt, the best family dentist or place to have a baby, we all have favorites. This is what the Birmingham Parent Family Favorites Awards is all about. The longest running contest of its sort in the Birmingham area, we do it totally with you and for you. You nominate and choose the winners. This year we’ve added a few new categories, too! It’s an open forum – we didn’t give you the choices, you made them yourselves. We’ve tallied the numbers and here are the results. In cases where voting was close, we also chose an “honorable mention” or two. That’s why not every category HAS an Honorable Mention winner. Our Honorable Mention means voting was close, and it’s not a “consolation” prize! Like last year, we’ve grouped the winners into easy categories for you. We hope you will keep this article all year as a reference to things to do and places to go in Birmingham, and if you have a favorite that didn’t make it this year, be sure to vote for them in 2018. This article will always be available at www.birminghamparent.com as an easy reference, and our winners’ websites are hot-linked for easy use. And be sure you tell the winners that you read about them in Birmingham Parent! And congratulations to our random prize winner, Tara Ward of Gardendale, who won a terrific trip for 4 to the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Florida, our travel sponsor.

ODYSSEY EARLY SCHOOLS

Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age-appropriate curriculum, specifically

designed to introduce each age grouping to language, reading, math, science and more, so that your child will possess a strong foundation for Kindergarten and beyond. Additionally, we guarantee teachers with four-year education degrees in all preschool classrooms and offer exceptional child-to-teacher ratios. At our schools, you can watch your child’s entire day in live, streaming, HD video over the Internet, through an individual, secure connection linked directly

to your child’s classroom. We want our parents to know what happens during their child’s day, and Odyssey is the only Overthe-Mountain daycare to offer this service. Our team works tirelessly to earn its reputation as the best childcare option for Birmingham parents, and we invite you to visit today to witness for yourself what so many other families have known since 1995! LITTLE LEARNERS

STARTING PRESCHOOL: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW By Paige Townley

The first day of preschool is a big step in the life of a young child. While certainly exciting, the milestone can be a stressful one for children (and even many parents) as oftentimes it’s the first time a child will be away from mom or dad for a prolonged period of time. But there are many things parents can do to greatly help their child in making a happy and healthy transition. By taking the time to prepare themselves and their child, parents can make the transition as easy as A-B-C. 32 | birminghamparent | july 2017

Be Excited While starting preschool may be a somewhat sad change for parents, it’s important that parents show a lot of excitement. “Even if mom is holding back tears, she needs to be excited in front of her child,” says Amanda Bentley, director of Odyssey Early School’s Trace Crossings Campus. “Parents need to show excitement about school. A child will get excited about it if mom and dad are showing excitement.” Tracy LaBreche, program director at Covenant Classical School, echoes the importance of building excitement before the child starts school. By creating excitement and talking about what they will experience at school, it will make the transition easier and less stressful. “Over the summer, parents can create excitement and really build the child’s interest to make it fun and something to look forward to instead of something to dread,” she says. “Creating something for the child to look forward to and talking through what school is like will help the child know what to expect and make it an easier transition for them to handle.” Being excited about school also helps a

child be more comfortable with the teacher and the idea of learning new ideas, adds Palmer Kennedy, headmaster of Advent Episcopal School. “It’s important for parents to instill in their child that learning is something to be excited about, not something to fear,” he says. “If the child can be comfortable with the school and know that they are going to be loved and cared for by their teacher, a child can really be ahead of the game.”

Establish a Routine For children who struggle separating from mom or dad, it’s important to establish a consistent routine for drop off and pick up from school, Bentley adds. “Kids can struggle if the time changes dramatically every day, especially if they are picked up early one day and very late the next,” she says. “Some kids can handle flexible schedules, but some can’t. So for those that can’t, consistency is definitely a good thing.” Communicate with the Teacher No one knows a child better than mom or dad. Parents should take the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the teacher before

school starts to discuss any potential issues or helpful information that could assist the teacher in relating to and teaching their child. “If it’s beneficial for the teacher to know a specific aspect about the child physically, developmentally, emotionally, or socially, parents can help prep the teacher so that he or she can know how to best relate to and teach the child from the very start,” says LaBreche. “Many programs are open to having a mini-orientation or some sort of time when parents can sit down with the teacher. A greater level of success can be achieved for both the teacher and the child if the communication between parents and a teacher is honest and open from the very beginning.”

Read, Read, Read Reading plays a big part in school, and while children don’t know how to read quite yet in preschool, having a love of reading is important. Parents should spend lots of time before school starts instilling a love for reading. “Develop that love for reading by sitting and reading books with your child,” says LaBreche. “That also helps develop a child’s vocabulary.”

Work on the Basics While most preschools don’t require that a child be potty trained or know how to do many tasks, it’s always beneficial if a child possesses some independent skills, such as washing their hands and being able to put on their coat. Being able to do some small tasks will instill a much-needed quality in a child: confidence. “Confidence is an important factor,” says Rebecca Little, head of Joseph Bruno Montessori Academy. “Confident children are more independent and are more likely to be able to adapt and handle situations that are new to them. Children should practice things such as hanging up their own jacket and washing their own hands. Developing fine motor skills is also important. Provide your child with opportunities to thread beads on a pipe cleaner, button and fasten clothes, etc. Many fine motor activities relate to practical life applications.” Other skills like having the ability to express their feelings verbally and playing and sharing with other children can also help a child learning to adapt to a classroom full of other children. “Social skills are important

in the classroom setting as well as at home,” Little adds. “Arrange play dates to encourage the development of these social skills prior to entering preschool. Or, look for activities in your community that will give your child the opportunity to engage with other children.”

Don’t Over Prepare While it’s always helpful when children come to preschool already equipped with social skills and some learning knowledge, parents need not worry about stressing over making sure their child already knows how to do much, such as writing their name, reciting information, or knowing all their numbers. “No preschooler is expected to come into school already knowing how to do all these things,” says Margaret O’Bryant, franchise owner of Primrose School at Liberty Park. “Every child develops and learns at their own pace. A preschool program will hone in on these tasks and help a child develop and learn.”

WHEN TODDLERS SAY

NO! by Christa Melnyk Hines

The moment your child utters her first word, you’ll probably want to announce it to the world while quickly marking the occasion in her baby book. You probably won’t be so thrilled, however, when her word of choice evolves into the very opinionated word “no.” Jen Mann-Li, a mother of two, describes her daughter Sadie, 3, as a “pro” at using the word no. “She was a late talker, didn’t really talk until she was almost 2 years old, and no was a favorite right away,” Mann-Li says. Mann-Li says that Sadie refuses to be distracted from what she wants. “She’s very stubborn and will not budge (sometimes literally),” she says. “We have a saying that Sadie will ‘die on that hill’ and she does daily over these ‘silly’ things.” Why do they say no? Laura Murphy is a certified parent coach and president of Real Families, Inc., which helps families work through parenting, marriage and financial issues. She says that the chief 36 | birminghamparent | july 2017

child-rearing complaint she hears from parents concerns children refusing to do what the parents want them to do. Not only is the word “no” an easy word for toddlers to say, but “The biggest reason they say it so much is because they hear it so much from everyone else.” The good news is this phase is completely normal and healthy. “The number one job of a 2-year-old is to test every physical limit. Pushing physical limits to find out what the adults will do is a natural approach for a toddler. They need to learn those limits,” Murphy says. Need a few proactive strategies to reduce the use of the word in your home and forge a path of less resistance? Change your approach. Challenge yourself to see if you can say no without really saying the word no. For example, if your child asks for a cookie instead of saying “no, not before dinner” say “sure, after dinner.” This exercise will also make you more aware of just how often

you say no. “Once we change our approach, we usually notice a change in our children,” Murphy says. Also, talk to your spouse and childcare providers about using other words besides no all the time. But that doesn’t mean you should ban the word entirely. “Say yes as often as possible, and when you say no, mean it,” Murphy advises. Having a sense of humor doesn’t hurt either. Ingrid Brown has two daughters, 4 and 2, who both went through the “no” phase at around 20 months. “I tried to make a game out of it,” Brown says. “If they said no to everything, I would counter back in a funny voice repeating ‘nooooOOOooo’ right back at them and give them a little tickle.” Offer two choices. Resistance often begins long before a child utters his first word. “When they’re old enough to start flinging food at you from their high chair, they’re old enough to start choices,” Murphy says.

Barring a dangerous situation like your child refusing to move in a busy street, provide your child with two choices that you like and can live with. “Small choices for the kids, but the adults make the big decisions,” Murphy says. For example, a parent decides on bedtime, but a child chooses between the blue pajamas or red pajamas. By giving away small decisions to your toddler, she will have a sense of control over her life which will likely reduce negative behaviors such as not listening, running away, resistance, and temper tantrums. If a child refuses to make a decision in 10 seconds, the parent should make it for her, following up with empathy. Show empathy not anger. Murphy stresses that empathy is an important component of providing choices to your child. When you replace anger with empathy, she says, you’ll notice a huge shift. For example, when your child doesn’t get something that she wants, say something along the lines of: “I know. It’s a bummer.” Avoid “parenting on the fly.” Stay calm in the heat of the moment and decide ahead of time on what things to definitely say no to and what you can say yes to. Also, try making a list of the small choices you can offer your child during those more troublesome times of the day. Need help? For more parenting tips and resources, check out Murphy’s website Real-families.com, Loveandlogic.com, Kidsareworthit.com and the book Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours by Kevin Leman. If your tactics don’t seem effective, seek out an expert like a family counselor to assess the situation. Although a tweak in parenting skills may be all that is needed, an expert can help determine if something more serious is going on with your child. LITTLE LEARNERS

1. Start Early! Finding the right child care option for your family can take time. 2. Contact Childcare Resources for a FREE customized listing of child care options: By Phone: Call 205-945-0018 or 800-822-2734, ext. 317 to speak with a consultant that will ask your specific questions about your unique child care needs and complete your search which you can receive by mail, email or fax. By Internet: Visit www.ccr-bhm.org and click on “Online Child Care Search” to complete your own child care search 3. Visit child care programs and ask questions about: • Teacher to child ratio – How many children are attended by each teacher? The fewer the number of children per teacher the better attention your child will receive. • Group or classroom size – How many children will be in your child’s group? Smaller groups tend to be calmer and safer environments. • Caregiver education and turnover – Ask about the teachers’ training and education. Do teachers attend classes and workshops? How long have the teachers been teaching in the classroom? Young children do better when they have a knowledgeable consistent teacher for at least a year. • Health and Safety – Is the program licensed or exempt from licensure? Why or why not? What is the discipline policy? Is the environment clean and organized? • Family Involvement – Are parents welcome to participate and share ideas with the program? How will the teacher share information with you about your child’s day? • Accreditation - Nationally accredited programs are measured by standards of quality that have been established by national child care organizations.

5 STEPS TO CHOOSING CHILDCARE One of the most important decisions parents can make is choosing a child care program. Enrolling your child in a quality program means your child is receiving care from a nurturing, trained child care provider in a safe, healthy, and stimulating learning environment. Your child’s experience in child care is the foundation for becoming a lifelong learner! Childcare Resources’ Resource and Referral is a free service that guides families through the process of selecting a quality child care program. Finding such care can be difficult in central Alabama, where there are more than 700 child care programs. We help parents and caregivers narrow down their choices based on their specific needs, location, kind of care, etc., and provide educational materials to help families recognize quality child care when they visit potential providers. 38 | birminghamparent | july 2017

4. Make an informed choice. Visit and tour several programs before making a decision. 5. Stay involved! You and your child care provider are partners. Participate in your child’s program regularly. Visit www.ccr-bhm.org or call and request a copy of our “Guide to Choosing Child Care.” The guide will help you choose the best child care option for your family and provide you with information about child care licensing in Alabama, financial assistance, quality indicators and much more.

* Please be advised that the list of child care providers offered by Childcare Resources is only intended as a resource. Childcare Resources does not warrant the information concerning any provider nor do we license, endorse, rate or recommend any particular providers. Only you can determine whether the quality of care is appropriate for your child. Publisher Carol Muse Evans serves on the Childcare Resources Board of Directors.

Pregnancy: A Real Pain in the Back By Dr. Maurine Batson

In addition to heartburn, swollen ankles, morning sickness, fatigue, mood swings and weight gain, another not-so-pleasant consequence of pregnancy that many women experience is back pain. Back pain and pregnancy go hand-in-hand. While fairly common, back pain should not be accepted as part of the journey to motherhood. It’s critical that your back pain be addressed in order to keep you comfortable during your pregnancy and to facilitate an easier delivery. CAUSES OF BACK PAIN Probably the largest contributor to back pain during pregnancy is weight gain. As your belly gets bigger throughout pregnancy, your back takes on the support of this additional weight. In addition, your back support is affected by your increase in hormone releases which relax ligaments in the pelvic area and make the joints looser in preparation for the birth. The bad news is that back pain may not be completely prevented; however, women can reduce its severity or frequency by: • Following a regular exercise regimen to strengthen muscles and increase flexibility. Women have found that, with their doctor’s approval, swimming, walking, or riding a stationary bicycle can help with the pain. • Wearing low-heeled shoes with a good arch support. • Sitting with feet slightly elevated in a chair that provides back support. • Getting plenty of rest and sleeping on the side with one or both knees

40 | birminghamparent | july 2017

bent. Placing a pillow between the knees and under the abdomen also may help. • Putting one foot on a stool or box when standing for a long period. • Not bending from the waist to pick up something. Instead, squat down and lift with the legs. Ask for help if the object is too heavy. • Applying heat or ice to the painful area. This is also a great time for an excuse to get a massage! • Taking medications as approved by a health care provider to relieve pain, such as acetaminophen. Do not take aspirin or ibuprofen unless prescribed by your doctor. Back pain usually starts in mid-pregnancy due to strain on back muscles caused by the growing uterus. Because of the resulting shift in the center of gravity, many women start to lean backward. This can make the back muscles work harder, resulting in general pain in the lower back and occasional shooting pain in the buttocks or upper legs. Pain can worsen when lying on the back, sitting upright in a chair, getting out of bed, or rolling over at night. Back pain usually is not a reason to see the doctor. However, women who experience pain for more than two weeks, severe pain, rhythmic cramping or sudden pain should contact their health care provider.

Fairy Tale Ball A Magical Evening for All Ages By Emily Reed

42 | birminghamparent | july 2017

Childcare Resources’ 11th annual Fairy Tale Ball will be held Aug. 26 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Birmingham Marriott Grandview. The event is presented by both the Board and Junior Board of directors for Childcare Resources, and features an evening of family fun including favorite fairy tale characters, and entertainers. “The event is unique because it allows families to attend something together,” says Joan Wright, Childcare Resources executive director. “A lot of times parents attend an event and leave their children at home with a babysitter, but this is a time where the children are included and can come along and have a wonderful time. It truly is a magical evening.” Characters such as Cinderella, Belle,

Spiderman, and Batman are frequent gala favorites, and this year Moana will make her debut appearance at the event. The evening also includes hors d’ oeuvres, adult and children’s beverages, a candy bar, and music provided by a DJ that Wright describes as “engaging and entertaining.” There also will be costumed stilt walkers, magicians, jugglers, and other entertainers, as well as fairy land activities and a silent auction featuring locally donated items, services, sports tickets and vacation packages. Childcare Resources is a non-profit 501c3 partner agency of United Way of Central Alabama, which was established in 1984. The agency’s mission is to make quality care and education of children happen by providing information, education, and assistance to families, providers of child care and the community, according to the agency’s website. The Fairy Tale Ball is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers each year, and

serves as a way to bring awareness to the mission of Childcare Resources. Heidi Ramey has attended the Fairy Tale Ball for the last five years, and has been actively involved in planning the event for the last three. “The event is unique in the sense that it is geared toward families and truly offers a night of fun for all,” Ramey says. “The characters and activities are top notch and offer non-stop entertainment all night long. I love to watch parents try to keep up with their children as they run from one activity to another with excitement on their faces.” Ramey is currently the vice president of the Junior Board and the co-chairman of this year’s ball. While parents often dress in typical evening wear attire, Wright says children are encouraged to wear costumes to the event. The idea for a Fairy Tale Ball originated when event organizers wanted something that would engage children as well as adults. “Childcare Resources is all about children and benefiting the children in our community,” Wright says. “The notion of a Fairy Tale Ball had not been done in the community yet, and that is how things came together. The first event sold out, and I have heard stories that people were calling in tears because they weren’t able to purchase tickets.” The event generally draws about 700 to 800 individuals each year. A family ticket is $200, adult tickets are $90, and a child ticket for ages 12 and under is $20. Children two and under are admitted free. Wright says it is best to purchase tickets in advance, and space is limited. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit http://www.cvent. com/events. Photo courtesy of CCR

Summer is also a great time to add color to your plate by taking advantage of the many wonderful fruits and vegetables that are in season. The American Heart Association encourages Americans to add color to every meal and snack, as adding even one serving of color in the form of fruits and vegetables each day is a great way to build a healthier lifestyle. This is especially important for young people, as about one in three American kids and teens are overweight or obese, which can lead to a broad range of health problems. Because fruits and vegetables are loaded with nutrients and fiber and typically low in calories

and sodium, the American Heart Association recommends four servings of fruit and five serving of vegetables per day. All forms of fruits and veggies – fresh, frozen, canned and dried – and all colors count, but be sure to read and compare food labels. A good rule of thumb is to eat as many different colors as possible every day. The AHA offers these daily tips to help your family take a step-by-step approach to eating healthy. Make it fun for kids to try new fruits and vegetables. Let them pick out a new fruit or vegetable in the grocery store each week, and figure out together how to cook or prepare it in a healthy way. Whole grains are a good option. Choose whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread, rye

bread, brown rice, popcorn, oatmeal and whole-grain cereal. Chicken, fish and beans are good choices for protein. Remove skin and visible fat from poultry. If you do eat red meat, limit it to once in a while, keep portion size small and choose the leanest cuts. Read food nutrition labels. Pick healthy foods that provide nutrients like vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber, but limit sodium, added sugars, saturated fat and trans fat. A small handful of nuts or seeds can be a satisfying and healthy snack. Look for unsalted or lightly salted nuts. Almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts are all good choices.

Package your own healthy snacks. Put cut-up veggies and fruits in portion-sized containers for easy, healthy snacking on the go, without the added sugars and sodium. Try sparkling water, unsweetened tea or sugar-free beverages instead of sugar-sweetened soda or tea. Add lemon, lime or berries to beverages for extra flavor. Enjoy fruit for dessert most days and limit traditional desserts to special occasions. Try a delicious smoothie or a mixed berry and yogurt parfait. Get your kids involved. Grow fruits and veggies in your own garden. Get your kids in the kitchen to help prepare meals and schedule time each week to plan.

7 Ways to Celebrate July 4th in the Heart of American Democracy:

WASHINGTON, DC (or anytime!) By Jennifer Greene

Few things can be more patriotic than celebrating America’s birthday in the beating heart of American democracy, Washington DC. Our nation’s capital goes all in on July 4th, with a day full of family activities. Here are our seven of our favorite ways to celebrate the Fourth in DC.

1. Visit the National Zoo Start your day at the National Zoo. It’s one of DC’s many Smithsonian museums, so admission is free. The zoo offers programs from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Help feed the fish, explore a rainforest habitat, or meet a zookeeper. 2. Take in the parade What is Fourth of July without a parade? Line up along Constitution Avenue with tens of thousands of other Americans and watch the National Independence Day Parade. Expect to see everything from fife and drum corps to military servicemen and women and elaborate floats. The parade begins at 11:45 a.m. and struts its stuff along Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th streets. 3. Join a local neighborhood celebration The Palisades neighborhood, just northwest of Georgetown, offers an idyllic small town celebration. Locals line up along the Whitehaven Parkway at 11 a.m. for the parade, which has been running since 1966 and concludes with a free picnic at the Palisades Rec Center. Go there for a hometown neighborhood celebration with hot dogs, watermelon, pony rides and moon bounces. 46 | birminghamparent | july 2017

Storey Park in the NoMa neighborhood is just blocks from Union Station. Its annual community celebration includes a moon bounce, live bands, food trucks and street performers all day on the Fourth.

4. Visit the National Archives The Declaration of Independence, which was approved by Congress 241 years ago on July 4, 1776, is on display at the National Archives. After seeing the document, you can meet the Founding Fathers who helped establish the birth of a nation with costumed actors in Revolutionary-era attire. This is our favorite place to visit during any visit to Washington. Arrive early in the day as it gets very crowded and you could wait in long lines outside. It’s free, so even if you can’t stay long, it’s worth stopping by. 5. Watch the fireworks from the waterfront in Georgetown The riverfront restaurants in the Georgetown waterfront plaza provide convenient access to a viewing spot. Make your reservations EARLY if you want to enjoy waterfront dining before

the show. After dinner and fireworks, be sure to visit Georgetown Cupcakes for dessert.

6. Take in A Capital Fourth Why watch the show on PBS when you can watch it live? Grab a spot on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol for A Capitol Fourth, which begins at 8 p.m. The concert features a star-studded lineup of musicians and a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra during the grand finale of the fireworks over the National Mall. Gates open at 3 p.m.; get there as early as possible. 7. Watch the Fireworks from the National Mall Pack a picnic lunch and take some lawn games to spend the day at the National Mall while you wait for the nighttime fireworks. The mall gets very full on July 4, so arrive early and plan to stay all day. If you don’t want to spend the entire day camped out at the National Mall, or you dislike crowds, there are plenty of other places to watch the fireworks. Look for a spot along the Potomac River, or even across the river in Virginia.

the

TRAVEL

WHERE TO STAY

If you plan to stay the night, be sure to book a hotel as soon as you can. Many of the hotels around the National Mall (site of the fireworks) sell out up to one year in advance. But there always are last-minute cancelations, so it’s worth a try to see if you can find a room for the Fourth. Aim for the Watergate or the W Hotel, both of which have rooftop decks for viewing the fireworks. Wherever you stay, DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE into DC on the Fourth of July! If you have a hotel, park the car and walk or take the wonderful DC public transit to wherever you plan to go. If you can’t get a room in DC, stay outside the city limits and take the safe, clean and convenient Metro train into DC for the day. You can plan your trip and the routes you need to take online before your visit. A final note: The Fourth of July is a hot time in Washington DC, literally and figuratively. Expect toasty temperatures, high humidity and large crowds. But don’t let any of those things dissuade you from the trip. Every American should visit to celebrate America’s birth at least once. THE WORLD OF RV-ING WITH KIDS: Another Way to Fun Family Travel

By Carol Muse Evans

It’s an interesting proposition – not as rustic as tent camping, but sometimes a bit less luxurious than a hotel. It’s “RVing,” and more and more families with kids are trying it out and loving it, according to Go RVing. “My husband and I grew up camping with our families and knew we wanted to share those experiences with our children,” says Nicole Yarbrough of Gardendale, mother of three young children. “We felt like they reached the age that it was possible to start camping, so we took the leap! Camping gives us the opportunity to get outside and away from the busyness that life with three young children can bring. We can just slow down, relax for a few days, and enjoy God’s creation. Watching them explore and have fun is worth everything that goes into planning and prepping for a trip.” Brandy Sims of Florence, formerly of Birmingham, says they purchased their camper in able to travel more extensively and affordably. “The pros of camping are definitely affordability, more family/quality time and educational experiences,” Sims says, who is married with two children, ages 48 | birminghamparent | july 2017

20 and 10. The Sims keep their food costs to a minimum because of the camper, they use minimal electronics and no TV when they camp, and they spend a lot of time reconnecting, Sims explains. If you’re interested in the proposition, try a starter visit to www.gorving.com, and consider renting one to try it out. RV rentals can range from less than $100 per night to up to more than $300 per night, depending on the season, rental location and the type and size of the RV, according to the folks at Go RVing. For example, a family of four rents a 25-foot motorhome with full kitchen for seven nights in June in Delray Beach, Florida, and spends $1,000 for the week. Another family may rent an RV with a fully outfitted kitchen in Phoenix, Arizona, and spend $1500. The average price to buy an RV varies. Pop-up campers start at $8,000, according to Go RVing, and nicely equipped travel trailers start at about $20,000 and go up, depending on size, age and amenities. Starting prices on a large motorhome can be as much as $80,000, though others can easily go up

to $500,000 or more and may even have full sized appliances, king sized beds, more than one bath, washer and dryer and more, according to Go RVing. Apparently there’s a price point and RV for just about everyone – it all depends on what you want and your budget. Need pet friendly so you can travel with your dog or cat? There’s an RV that’s perfect for that. Unlike a hotel, you can take your pet just about anywhere with you when you control/own your “motor home.” And there are campgrounds just about anywhere, at all types of price points and with many different amenities. And you can easily travel to multiple locations in one trip more easily, because you take your “home away from home” with you. “Having an RV gives us a good “home base” to recharge, cool down, and rest before heading back out,” Yarbrough says. “My two oldest boys love sleeping in the bunk beds, and I love having a small kitchen to fix meals in. Of course with dirty sweaty kids, the bathtub is a MUST! My daughter sleeps in a play pen in the living room area, which works out perfectly…. I was worried about

how everyone would sleep, since they all sleep in separate rooms at home, but it has worked fine so far!” Sims says the cons of RVing are “definitely cramped quarters and parts of the vacation becomes work…there’s hauling, parking, setting up, leveling, hooking up utilities, then hauling out and setting up all our gear.” Then she has cooking and clean up, so it’s “definitely a trade off,” Sims adds. “But experience is the greatest teacher, and camping allows me to give my family amazing experiences.” Prices to rent spaces at camp grounds can vary greatly. Rent at Fort Wilderness in Disney World with full hookups for water, sewer and cable, and you’ll spend approximately $121 per night in the summer. In Arizona, a KOA campground with full hook ups in summer will run around $53 a night, and some state parks will allow you to camp for free, while others charge a nominal fee. However, some of these may have no amenities except for their beauty and seclusion. As for recommendations from the seasoned campers, Yarbrough says she would absolutely recommend a camper with at least one slide out. “We knew we wanted that going in, and it was well worth it! It really gives a lot of space in the living room/eating area. If you are even considering getting a camper, DO IT! My husband and I are so thankful we did. We were coming home from our last trip and planning our next one! We will never get this sweet time back with our babies, so we have to make the most of it!” Carol Muse Evans is publisher of Birmingham Parent.

CAMPER? NO CAMPER? Try Camp Gulf at Miramar Beach By Carol Muse Evans

I recently had the opportunity to “camp” at Camp Gulf at Miramar Beach, in the heart of Sandestin, Florida, and what a treat! I cannot wait to return. This campground/RV park has been here for more than 70 years – long before a great deal of Destin and the growth around the park was ever even thought of. The O’Neills have managed the campground since 1995 and have kept a comfortable, up-to-date and very clean camp ground right on the beach with full beach access for all ages to enjoy. I’m not a camper, but this trip sold me! I guess you would say I am a “luxury camper,” while certainly I didn’t rough it. You don’t have to at Camp Gulf. We stayed in one of Camp Gulf ’s “Cabins on the Beach,” each with a living room, kitchen, bedroom, full bath and a sleep loft. The kitchen was fully equipped with full-size fridge, a stove and even a dishwasher. Televisions were in the loft, living area and bedroom. The sleeping loft included sleeping mats, and all linens are provided. The private deck/porch was a great place for beach toys, chairs, towels and such, and each came equipped with its own picnic table, wagon for the beach and a little charcoal grill. Parking was right out front! Though it was a cabin and stationary, we were staying in another type of mobile home – beach front! This amazing camp ground is not only super nice, beautiful and well located, but it is also gated, making visitors feel a little extra degree of security while staying there. We saw families, couples, elderly campers, etc. walking at night, many with their pets or small children, and the well-lit area is just a few steps from the wonderful beach front. Two pools (one is heated and covered during the winter), hot tubs, a large water slide at one of the pools, a well-equipped and updated bathhouse, and activity building round out a great place for families to stay, whether they have their own RV or tent, or choose to rent one of the cabins, as we did. There are even planned activities and games to help keep children entertained during your stay, as well as fun rental items. Rentals include: golf carts, beach carts, segways, yolo boards, wagons and pedal carts. Pets are welcome, and a few of the rentable cabins allow pets. Be sure to ask ahead of time for pet-friendly accommodations. And, you are right in the middle of Sandestin – but secluded in your own campground. You are steps or a short drive from the Tanger Outlet Center, specialty shopping, other entertainment, great restaurants, markets and much more. How to Transition Your Skin Care Routine for Summer By Dr. Corey Hartman

What should you focus your skin care routine on during the warmer months? Changing seasons bring different weather conditions, which have an impact on your skin. Once the colder temperatures give way to warmer air, more intense sun and higher humidity, it’s important to consider how these changes interact with your skin care routine. The focus should be less on moisturization and more on sun protection and oil control.

Warmer temperatures cause our skin to produce more oil and more sweat. The increase in humidity brings about more oil retention and the possibility for increased clogged pores, which can lead to acne breakouts. Moisturizers should be light, non-comedogenic and contain a higher concentration of water. Gone are the old-school witch hazel or alcohol-based astringents, but toners containing hydroxy-acids such as salicylic acid or glycolic acid can keep oil production to a healthy minimum and ward off blemishes and blackheads. Cleansing the skin is also a good idea for those who suffer from more oily skin.

What products should you swap out for summer? Once the dry air of winter is gone and we turn off the heaters, it’s time to forget the heavy moisturizers. Oil-free or serum-based moisturizers are more beneficial during the heat of the summer.

What products should you add to your routine? Some may argue that acne and oil control are not problems for them – and this may be true! In that case, a toner may not be necessary. One thing is for certain, however…everyone should be using a moisturizer with sunscreen of SPF 30-50 every day of the year, but especially in

the spring and summer. The benefits are numerous: prevention of skin cancer and precancers, protecting against the production of free radicals caused by the sun that contribute to wrinkles and premature aging and controlling melasma and the development of sunspots and other pigment problems to name just a few. Are there any ingredients/products that people should be more careful with during the summer months? While there are many different chemical peel options that consist of many different active ingredients, one should take caution with deeper chemical peels. While more superficial peels are fine to be used during the summer, it is advised that deeper peels be avoided during periods of intense sun exposure because they can make a person more vulnerable to the effects of the sun during the peeling period.
