Our 2015 Family Favorites Award Winners Revealed Each year, our Family Favorites Awards get more and more popular, and this year we recorded a record number of votes in the process. Now in our ninth year, our awards are often emulated, but as the original Favorites Awards, we’ve stayed true to our original process – you, the reader, are in charge of the nominations and the votes – and you ultimately choose our winners. Nothing is quite as good as a personal referral, and that’s what our readers have given each other here with these awards, by telling us what their favorites are, then we’ve tallied the results and presented them here for all of you. Some winners are new; some winners are repeats of years past. Some categories are even new. And there’s nothing shabby about being an honorable mention – our honorable mentions are chosen when voting is extremely close – it’s definitely an honor worth touting, too! We’ve given it a new look this year, moved the awards from June to July, and we think you’ll enjoy how we’ve organized the categories, making it easier than ever to find information and access it all year long, whether it’s in the print issue, or on our website at www.birminghamparent.com. We didn’t forget a prize for the best readers in town! We have randomly chosen a family from among the voters to win the coveted trip to Wilderness in the Smokies (SEE PAGE 28). Along with our Family Favorites Awards, we’ve got some great stories in this issue on area organizations like The Dance Foundation (formerly Children’s Dance Foundation), Hikes for Tykes – part of Fresh Air Family, and Alabama Splash Adventure. Don’t miss our calendar of events – July is chock full of great family activities. And be sure to save the date: August 8, 2015 is our 2nd annual Happy Healthy Kids Fair at the Riverchase Galleria, a great back-to-school event during tax-free shopping weekend, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t miss it! Have a great July 4th!

parenting

Parenting with Dr. Friedman

Q:

A few years ago a teenager shot and killed three police officers in a manner that the boy allegedly learned from an explicit and violent video game. A lawsuit was filed against the manufacturer and several distributors of the game. Do video games teach children to be violent? Should this teenager be excused from blame for the murders because he was taught to do it? Are the publisher and distributors responsible? What about the parents? There is little question that children learn from what they see. Albert Bandura’s research in the 1960’s showed that children, when left to play in a room full of toys chose all the toys about equally. However, after observing an adult punching an inflated knock-down figure, they were much more likely to choose the punching bag toy over any other toy after the demonstration. That is, after observing aggressive play, the previously docile children chose to be aggressive. Children learn from what they are told. Video games are promoted by their manufacturers through advertisements, and once widely distributed, their merits are spread by the peers who play them and tell their friends that the games are fun. Once there is acceptance of the violence and aggression by peers and parents, the child no longer feels uncomfortable with his aggressive pleasure. Children learn from their parent’s attitude. The absence of restraint on

violence is heard by the teenager as approval and permission. If a parent allows a violent game to be played in the home, the teen assumes it has his parents’ stamp of approval. The teen might even see a parent playing the same game, which he might interpret as the parent’s condoning violent play. Not only is this child learning from what he plays, he is failing to learn positive values. Most school-age children spend most of their day at school. When the student’s limited leisure time is occupied with violent computer games, he is not engaged in team sports where he might learn to cooperate and take turns. He is not “hanging out” with his well-behaved peers where he might learn to behave in such a manner as to be accepted socially by others. Parents should know the content of the games their child is playing and should set limits on what is allowed in the home. However, parental responsibility goes deeper. It is the troubled

child who seeks out violent games in the first place. The emotionally deprived child is often an angry child. By raising children with love, time, attention, and appropriate limits you prevent them from developing the rage that leads to fascination with violent games. Regardless of the outside influence, this teenage murderer is responsible for his choice to do wrong. The video game might have given him ideas and skills, but he alone made the choice to do harm. There are millions of children playing violent video games. There are fortunately only a few who carry out violent acts in reality. The publisher and distributors were links in the chain that led to the deaths of the policemen. They need to reexamine their choices. There are many ways to design an entertaining and profitable game. Violence need not be a part of it.

Alabama Garden Trail Brochure released

Postal Service Issues Limited Edition Missing Children Stamps There were nearly half a million reports of missing children last year. To heighten awareness of this critical issue, Postmaster General Megan Brennan dedicated the Limited Edition Missing Children Forever stamps at the National Postal Forum in Anaheim, CA, earlier this summer. The educational stamp sheet provides information on National Missing Children’s Day and how to aid in the search for missing children. “Today, the United States Postal Service affirms its longstanding commitment to help find missing children and bring them home by issuing a new stamp to make people more aware,” says Brennan. “Speaking for the men and women of the United States Postal Service, we are deeply committed to this noble and urgent cause.” The phrase “Forget-Me Not” is inscribed across the top of the stamp and “Help Find Missing Children” is featured at the bottom. If you think you have seen a missing child, contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at (1-800-843-5678) or visit www.missingkids.org.

Seven botanical gardens across the state are featured in the new “Alabama Garden Trail” brochure and on the companion website www. alabamagardentrail.com. The colorful 15-page brochure produced by the Alabama Tourism Department includes the Huntsville Botanical Garden, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Aldridge Gardens in Hoover, Jasmine Hill Gardens in Wetumpka, Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, Mobile Botanical Gardens and Bellingrath Gardens and Home in Theodore. The www.alabamagardentrail. com website features “don’t miss” highlights for each of the gardens, upcoming events and a collection of road trip guides to nearby attractions. The brochure is available at the eight state welcome centers, the garden trail site locations, local tourism bureaus and online at www.alabama.travel.

This year’s theme is “Science Then! Science Now!” which will trace how science concepts have changed over the centuries and how those changes affect our society and the world. This program is free to all ages and allows youngsters to get involved in kid-friendly, scientifically based, hands-on activities. The event will feature knowledgeable and fun presenters. Parents are encouraged to remain with their children. “We love to see our children learn and get involved. Nothing is more exciting than seeing the human mind enjoy learning,” according to retired educators and organizers of the event, Winfield and Elinor Burks. Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. The grants will also support the Society’s Road To Recovery® program, which provides transportation to and from treatment for people with cancer who do not have a ride or are unable to drive themselves. Nearly a fourth of people with cancer will exhaust all savings as a result of treatment costs, even with insurance; and as a result, 11 percent also cannot afford food and basic necessities. Joe Lee Griffin Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others.

Dance Foundation Celebrates 40 Years Our circle is big and welcoming, with a strong foundation.

10 | birminghamparent | july 2015

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of Birmingham’s greatest creative forces – Children’s Dance Foundation, located in downtown Homewood, and now known simply as “The Dance Foundation” as of July 1. “As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we have taken time to reflect, listen to our supporters, and consider how we can strengthen our programs to best serve students of all ages,” says Shellie Chambers, artist director-upper school and marketing director of TDF. “The Dance Foundation better communicates who we are and who we serve. Our circle is big and welcoming, with a strong foundation.” A non-profit organization since 1975, TDF has nearly 30 dance artists and musicians who fulfill the founding mission daily, dancing with Birmingham children at several locations in the area, including The Bell Center, the YWCA and United Cerebral Palsy. Forty years ago, dancer Jennie Webb Robertson, along with actor Virginia Samford Donovan and musician Mary Conyers Cooper implemented a new approach to teaching dance to very young children and those with special needs. With keyboard in tow, they went directly to the places where children were gathered – at daycares and in homeless shelters. Today, the organization’s professional teaching artists continue to ignite the creative spirit and talent of children across Birmingham at more than a dozen partner sites. Directors and teachers testify that TDF’s classes provide a physical and creative outlet for their students and enrich their learning. This outreach is largely funded by TDF’s studio program, where more than 500 students study creative movement, ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap and acting. TDF is launching new programming for the

upcoming school year. The new Dance Artist Program will provide third through 12th grade students an opportunity to study dance technique hand in hand with artistry for an all-encompassing dance education. Artistic Director Heidi Stoeckley, a former Martha Graham dancer, has been with the organization for 14 months after spending seven years teaching dance in Singapore. Her vision for the students at TDF goes far beyond dance. “We encourage our students to learn the art of dance and the art of life, to explore their imaginations, to become self-aware, to engage in creative problem solving and to enjoy learning,” she says. TDF’s teaching artists, who work with local professional companies such as Sanspointe and Arova Contemporary Ballet, teach the elements of dance that make it an art, not simply a craft. TDF students learn why they move, just as much as they learn how to move. TDF is a place where students of all ages and abilities get a solid foundation for dance as well as life. TDF parent Mollie Erickson says she loves the diversity of dancers who participate. “I love the commitment to combining movement with confidence,” Erickson says. “And I love the community outreach – taking dance beyond the studio into schools and daycares and preschools because really and truly, you can dance anywhere.” Classes are offered September through May and during the summer for infants to adults, and there is something for everyone. Contemporary dance classes and baby-wearing ballet are offered on a drop-in basis for adults this summer as well as a new class for infants and their favorite grown-up. A schedule of weekly summer and fall classes and summer camps can be found online at thedancefoundation.org.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAMILY FAVORITES?

Announcing the Birmingham Parent 2015 Family Favorites Award Winners Compiled by Bethany Adams Hunley

We’re all about favorites, especially our kids. Whether it’s a favorite color, sports team, ice cream place, place to have a birthday party or buy new shoes, every kid and parent knows just what they like and why. Sometimes as a parent we rely on friends and family to tell us what is the best of the best. Many times you are introduced to a favorite by word of mouth. Or you see an ad for a spot, go there, and then share with everyone else how great it is. This is what the Birmingham Parent Family Favorites Awards is all about. The longest running contest of its sort in the Birmingham area, we do it totally with you and for you. You nominate and choose the winners. It’s an open forum – we didn’t give you the choices, you made them yourselves. We’ve tallied the numbers and here are the results. In cases where voting was close, we also chose an “honorable mention” or two. Know they were close in the running to get this honor – it’s no consolation prize! And this year, we’ve grouped the winners into easy categories for you. We hope you will keep this article all year as a reference to things to do and places to go in Birmingham, and if you have a favorite that didn’t make it this year, be sure to vote for them in 2016. This article will always be available at www.birminghamparent.com as an easy reference, and our winners’ websites are hot-linked for easy use. And be sure you tell the winners that you read about them in Birmingham Parent! A N D TH E W I N N E R S A R E … . 12 | birminghamparent | july 2015

ODYSSEY EARLY SCHOOLS

Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age-appropriate curriculum, specifically designed to

28 | birminghamparent | july 2015

introduce each age grouping to language, reading, math, science and more, so that your child will possess a strong foundation for Kindergarten and beyond. Additionally, we guarantee teachers with fouryear education degrees in all preschool classrooms and offer exceptional child-to-teacher ratios. At our schools, you can watch your child’s entire day in live, streaming, HD video over the Internet, through an individual, secure connection linked directly to your child’s

classroom. We want our parents to know what happens during their child’s day, and Odyssey is the only Over-the-Mountain daycare to offer this service. Our team works tirelessly to earn its reputation as the best childcare option for Birmingham parents, and we invite you to visit today to witness for yourself what so many other families have known since 1995! By Carol Muse Evans

What you may not realize is this is “The General,” aka Pat Koch (pronounced “cook”) and one of the new owners of Alabama Splash Adventure. She’s a hands-on owner, just like the rest of the Koch family. With more than 60 years of experience in running a theme park, she knows what she is doing. The Koch family, who has been in the amusement park business for more than 45 years, is famous for their family-friendly, hands-on approach to running a park. Pat and her son Dan and daughter Natalie bought the former Alabama Adventure in early 2014. But they have a history that goes back to the 1960s and 1970s in Santa Claus, Indiana, where the family, led by the late Jim Koch, started, ran and grew Holiday World. Today Holiday World (www.holidayworld.com) is owned and managed by the daughter-inlaw of Jim and Pat since their oldest son Will passed away. The Koch family has been known for running a world-class family park in Indiana, and both Dan and Pat say Birmingham will be the same. They have brought “value” pricing to the park – free parking, free soft drinks, free sunscreen, free life jacket use and even free Wi-Fi are now available at Alabama Splash Adventure. There’s also free float rental for the lazy river and the slides.

About the only “extra” you pay for is a locker, wheelchair or stroller rental now. And their “one low price” gets you into the whole park – or both sides, if you will – the water park and the rides side of the park. Even the laser challenge game on Main Street is free with admission. Dan says you’ll also find better quality food this season, and bringing in a can of Pepsi or other Buffalo Rock product – their drink sponsor – will get you $5 off your ticket or $10 off food or merchandise in the park. And that price of admission is $29.95, while a season pass is $79.75. Don’t miss the giant funnel cake – it’s enough for four people or more! And now it’s a Splash Adventure specialty. (And yes, you can still get a single serving size.) You’ll also notice a cleaner, safer park, the Kochs say, and happier employees, which translate into happier visitors to the park. Lifeguards are given rigorous training, multiple security guards are on site at all times, as are two EMT’s for additional safety. Water quality is much improved and has state-of-the art monitoring now. The keyless locker system makes it easier to keep up with your locker information, and it will hold the belongings of up to 4 people easily. And Main Street is virtually spotless, along with the other walkways, restrooms and eateries at Splash Adventure.

“It’s time for Birmingham to get over the perception of ‘what was’ at this Alabama theme park,” Dan says. “A new ‘General’ is in town, and there’s a new and improved park for Birmingham and the state to finally enjoy.” Everything here has been repaired, painted, scrubbed, cleaned and improved. If you’ve been to this park in the past, you’ll definitely notice the positive changes. The Kochs say they are “here to stay,” and they will do things in stages, making sure to get everything right and do the things they have well first before adding on. “We are focusing on the theme park and the water park, doing what we do best – food, service and hospitality.” “We knew the South really needed a ‘holiday world’,” Pat and Dan both say. And while Six Flags over Georgia and other parks do exist within a day’s drive of the city, “Alabama Splash Adventure is a family park with thrilling rides, but not a thrill park…we want families to enjoy coming here,” Pat adds. Part of that family-friendly atmosphere is clothing and shoes must be worn outside of the water park area, no smoking, except in designated areas and no alcohol sold or allowed on property. Walking through the park, Dan greets some of his “regulars” by name, talks to the kids and shakes hands with the parents. The Kochs’ reputation is important to them, and they want visitors to enjoy the park and have the best experience possible, Dan says. You’ll still find the favorites at the water park – Neptune’s Plunge, Kahuna Bay, Salamander Bay, the Warrior River (lazy river), and the newer Wipeout Adventure Course. On the “rides” side of the park is the famous Rampage roller coaster, repaired, upgraded and improved, along with four children’s rides and three “hybrids” (the whole family can ride). There’s a family coaster, the “Centispeed,” named by Pat, the Rio Grande Train and the Jump around Frog ride. The park is far from being “just” a water park now. It’s time for Birmingham to get over the perception of “what was” at this Alabama theme park, Dan says. A new “General” is in town, and there’s a new and improved park for Birmingham and the state to finally enjoy. Hikes For Tykes Bring Preschoolers Closer to Nature

COURTESY OF HIKES FOR TYKES/FRESH AIR FAMILY

By Leah Ingram Eagle

32 | birminghamparent | july 2015

Every Saturday from the end of March through November, families with preschoolers can participate in a fun, educational free event at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens designed to help the children interact with nature. Verna Gates, the founder and executive director of Fresh Air Family, started “Hikes for Tykes” eight years ago as a partnership between the Botanical Gardens and Fresh Air Family. Gates says the 1½-hour program is designed for preschoolers and their families, and encourages hands-on learning. “We want them to enjoy it, to have a good time and to learn things,” Gates says. “It’s all about learning and enjoying, and self-exploration isn’t a bad thing. This isn’t school – it’s enrichment.” Fresh Air Family, which offers more than 400 outdoor activities to an outreach of more than 10,000 people, does the programming for Hikes for Tykes two weekends, and the Gardens takes the other two weekends. On a warm Saturday morning in May, Gates led a group of children on a “fairy and dragon” tour of the gardens. Gates began by telling the story of a fairy who doesn’t believe in children, instead of the other way around. After introductions, the hike begins with plant touching and inspecting before heading to the tadpole pond, where hikers can see thousands of tiny tadpoles before they turn into frogs. When Gates comes across a large leaf, she borrows some water from one of the participants to demonstrate how the plant can be used for drinking, and a few even give it a taste. The treetop trail is one of the favorites of the young hikers. It’s a row of tree trunks, just the right size for walking or jumping across. Next to it is the woodpecker tree, in which the kids can touch the thousands of holes the birds have made in the bark. The coolest spot of the Gardens is the fern garden, a shady, hilly area and one of the largest collections in the Gardens. The hike winds down below a bridge where the kids climb into a large tree trunk that’s been carved out to resemble a canoe. The kids are all eager to jump in, and Gates pretends they are on a ship and lets them use their imaginations to tell a story. The most hands-on part of the hike comes near the end, when it’s time to build the fairy houses. Gates takes the kids into an area off the trail with all sorts of branches, leaves, pine straw and other items they use to make their own houses. As the hike comes to an end, Gates gets the kids to race to the fountain to get rid of any extra energy. Our motto is “tired, dirty children,” Gates says. Even though it may seem the children aren’t interested or paying attention to what Gates is describing, she says that it’s amazing to her what they take away from the hike. “They’re so smart. It’s amazing what they pick up. I’m an ethnobotanist, which is the cultural study of plants, and I like to tell stories,” she says. “I like to have a reason for children to look inside the bloom. And I teach observation skills and identify the plant and also incorporate math by counting the petals.” Gates said that in the 1800s, people lived off plants for their food and medicine and she tries to communicate that knowledge. Most of her stories have a relationship with plants.

Taylor Steele, the volunteer education coordinator at the Gardens, says Hikes for Tykes is about connecting communities and families. “We have aligned missions and goals with Fresh Air Family, and this is something in which we can partner together to focus on family activities to get children and parents out in nature,” Steele says. Steele says activities entertain, inform and engage children on the awareness of nature around them. “As we do the hike, depending on what time of year, we have different themes,” he says. Some of the themes for the hikes include Forest Fairy Houses, Wings and Things of Spring (birds, butterflies, etc.), What Would a Dr. Seuss Garden Look Like?, I Spy (kids have to remember things and look for things in nature), and Hikes Inspired By Dinosaurs. “On one hand we’re engaging kids and the other we are engaging parents,” he says. “This is the best field trip I have ever been on,” says Nancy Crowley, a retired school principal and grandmother who brought kids to a hike. “The kids loved it.” For information on Hikes for Tykes and other Fresh Air Family programs, visit www.freshairfamily.org.

ask the specialist

Pregnancy Dos and Don’ts By James Brock, MD

I

f you just found out that you’re pregnant, you probably have a lot of questions. Should you eat shellfish? What about drinking a cup of coffee, soft drink or glass of wine? Here are a few tips to help you and your baby stay healthy for the next nine months.

DO see your doctor for regular prenatal checkups. Ask about stopping any medications you are currently taking and starting any new ones. Make sure health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure are treated and kept under control.

James Brock, MD, is an OB/GYN with Brookwood Women’s Care.

DO eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, grains, calcium-rich foods and lean meats. It’s okay to have up to 12 ounces of fish per week, but avoid fish such as swordfish, mackerel or tilefish that are high in mercury and can cause serious nervous system damage for your baby. Instead, opt for canned light tuna, shrimp, salmon or catfish. Also stay away from unpasteurized milk and soft cheeses, because they may contain listeria, a bacterium linked to miscarriage, premature birth, stillbirth or fetal illness. Remember to drink plenty of water every day to prevent constipation. DO get at least 400 mcg of folic acid every day to lower the risk of birth defects. It’s also a good idea to take folic acid before you become pregnant. Also be sure to get enough iron to prevent anemia and reduce the chances of preterm birth and a low-birth weight baby. Your doctor may prescribe prenatal vitamins during your pregnancy.

34 | birminghamparent | july 2015

DON’T smoke, which can raise the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth and infant death; don’t drink alcohol, which can cause irreversible birth defects; or use illegal drugs, which are dangerous for you and your baby. Avoid exposure to toxic substances and chemicals, such as cleaning solvents, certain insecticides and paint. DON’T gain too much weight. Excess body weight can increase the chances of developing gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, stillbirth and preterm birth. In general, a woman who is normal weight should gain about 25 pounds during her pregnancy. DON’T change or clean out your cat’s litter box and avoid contact with pet rodents, such as guinea pigs and hamsters. DON’T take very hot baths or use a hot tub or sauna, which can be harmful to the fetus. Also avoid douching or using scented feminine hygiene products, which can increase the risk of infection. In short, stay healthy and get at least seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Reduce your stress levels and make sure to see your doctor for routine checkups.

Should I Pay My Child?

ALL ABOUT ALLOWANCES By Kerrie McLoughlin

Ask a few of your friends about whether or not kids should get an allowance, and you’ll hear all sorts of different answers. “As for allowance, no, we don’t pay it,” says Michele Shimp. “We decided that there are things the kids just have to do as members of the family: dishes, trash, laundry, feeding pets, cleaning room, mowing the lawn in the summer, the basics. However, they do have opportunities for money chores, those out of the norm like cleaning the fridge, vacuuming the van, cleaning a closet, etc.” Some parents pay an amount per chore for tasks such as emptying the dishwasher and cleaning the bathroom. Daniel Waters Minton breaks it down specifically. “Max gets one cent per minute, or 10 cents for 10 minutes, or $6/ hour. I break it down because sometimes he’s only got 25 minutes in him. He can earn it by doing chores outside of his normal expected stuff, or by babysitting his little brother.” Joanna Nesbit says: “We give our kids allowance. We don’t pay for chores, but we give a predictable set amount each week, and then we require the kids to pay for things like clothes (my 15-year-old), meals with friends, movies, toys, anything they want that is considered extra.” And Deanna Butler says she gives an allowance to her kids in lieu of buying them little extras such as gum, etc. at the checkout line. “They each get $10 a month (even the near teen) and from that $2 goes into savings. Everything else they earn is via their own entrepreneurial spirit.” David McCurrach of KidsMoney.org says the purpose of an allowance is to give your children the opportunity to learn how to manage money through their own successes and failures and the input of their parents. Also weighing in is counselor Andrea Ramsay Speers, MA. Her suggestions:

✱ Don’t link allowance to chores. Expect kids to

pitch in with chores because they are a part of the family, not because they’re getting paid.

✱ Teach them how to save by turning over a few

regular expenses to them, and build it into how much their allowance is. For example, instead of you giving them money each week for their church offering, or for a snack at the arena, give them enough money in their allowance to cover those costs, and let them know that they are expected to remember their money and budget in order to have enough for what they need.

✱ Teach them not to “buy on credit” (“Mom, can you give me an advance on my allowance?”) and instead to save their money and only buy what they can pay cash for.

✱ Don’t base an allowance amount on age. Base

it on need and maturity level. Decide with your kids individually what each of them can handle based on experience, and go from there.

✱ Don’t forget that your kids are watching!

Make sure that you’re modeling responsible finances by not overspending, buying things you can’t afford, or putting too much emphasis on material goods.

A MICKEY MOUSE

SAFARI PARTY Helps One Toddler Celebrate “One”

36 | birminghamparent | july 2015

We’ve all seen or been to a Mickey-themed party. Everyone loves Mickey Mouse! So when the thought of planning another Mickey themed party came up, the challenge was on to give the common theme a new twist. Thus came the theme “Mickey Heads to the Safari,” a theme that was fun for adults and children alike. Guests were greeted with large 3-foot cutouts of animals from the safari, and each guest was given a safari hat adorned with Mickey ears! The safari elements didn’t stop there. Bamboo chairs, bright yellow highboys topped with beautiful flowers, and an array of custom desserts that were almost too pretty to eat made it extra special. “Guests are still raving about not just how pretty the desserts were set up, but how good everything tasted,” party host Andrea Meade says. “I loved seeing all the custom desserts come together and it really set the tone for our safari setting.”

While the desserts and decor were a big hit, the surprise performance by an African dance group really left guests speechless! The dance troupe performed a vibrant and upbeat piece that was followed by a piece that included crowd participation. And to top it off, Mickey Mouse even joined in on the fun and took part in the last dance number. “When I completed the walkthrough of my clients’ home and noticed that they had a dance room in their basement, I immediately began to think of ways that we could utilize this space,” Brittany Sharp of Sharp Soirées says. “The African dance troupe was definitely a crowd pleaser.” This party was a prime example of how home parties can be just as fabulous as parties at a particular venue. Utilizing various spaces in the home keeps the party from being congested. For example, the kids table and dessert display were set up in the basement, and then a more adult-friendly area was set up on the main floor. Guests were able to walk around freely amidst a space that was open and inviting. The goal is to create a setting that everyone could enjoy. That goal was definitely achieved as guests left the safari adventure with a new outlook on just how cool Mickey Mouse is.

poetry party

by Charles Ghigna

Haiku

The Haiku is a 3-line poem that describes a little scene in nature. • The first line has 5 syllables. • The second line has 7 syllables. • The third line has 5 syllables. Here are 12 haiku, one for each of the months of the year.

January

A sleeping doe stirs beneath her blanket of dawn, a new year rising.

February

The sea lion roars across the far horizon, storm clouds stalk the shore.

March

A field full of pale parachutes, dandelions adrift in the wind.

April

Ivory butterflies perch on black branches, the dogwood blossoms.

May

The cherry blossom wakes, stretches, opens herself to the morning sun.

June

The cricket calls to the meadow, each evening he hears his echo sing.

July

Beyond fields of rice shadows sway to moonlight’s breeze, lithe bamboo dancers.

August ILLUSTRATION BY CHIPGHIGNA.COM

Listen, the forest waits for summer’s final song, the whippoorwill sings.

September

Shadows bow to the setting sun, pray to the sky for blessings of light.

October

Artist autumn comes, paints her blush across each tree, drops palette, and leaves.

NOW YOU TRY IT!

You might want to begin by writing a haiku about a scene that represents the month of your birthday!

For more poetry activities, visit the Father Goose website at FatherGoose.com. Want to submit YOUR poems for publication? Parents, here are some magazines that publish poems written by children: http://www.ckmagazine.org • http://www.magicdragonmagazine.com, http://www. cricketmag.com

November

Geese fly south pulling over the mountaintops a stone curtain of sky.

December

The last lullaby, an owl cries out through the pines, the north wind answers.
