7 Tips
for New Year Nutrition
(Or New Year New-trition) By Paige Townley
Helping your child create healthier eating habits is a recipe for long-term success
A
nother new year usually means new resolutions, and for many parents, included on that list is a resolution to help their children make healthier food choices. The task can be rather difficult – and daunting – especially if not-so-good eating habits have already been established. But don’t fret; positive changes can occur if the right steps are taken. Children’s of Alabama’s Clinical Nutritionist Janelle Schirmer gives us seven tips to help parents set the stage for healthy eating habits. Take the Lead. One of the very first steps for parents in starting a new, healthier course of eating is understanding their responsibility with feeding. It’s about taking the lead role and establishing what a meal time will include and when it will be served. It also goes for snack times, too. “It is easy to let it be skewed so that the child runs the show in deciding when they are hungry and what they want to eat,” Schirmer says. “But parents need to remember they are in charge and a child’s responsibility is deciding if they are going to eat the meal and how much.” Set Specific Times. Part of taking on the responsibility means setting a schedule and keeping to it as much as possible to prevent falling into the easy trap of allowing the child to graze on various foods all day long. “It’s an easy trap to fall in to, but setting specific times can help a child’s appetite when it comes to mealtime,” Schirmer adds. “That can also help them be more accepting of what they are being served because they have more internal regulation with their hunger cues.” Don’t Cater to Preferences. At mealtimes it’s easy to focus exclusively on foods that you know your child likes, but it’s important to be mindful of introducing new, healthy foods too. A good rule of thumb Schirmer shares is when introducing a new food, include at least two other familiar foods the child likes on
8 | Birmingham Parent | THE FAMILY GUIDEOOK JANUARY 2022
the plate too so it’s not overwhelming or intimidating. “They may be more willing to try a bite or two of the new food item if they know they like the other foods on the plate,” she says. Be the Role Model. It’s hard to convince anyone to try something new if you aren’t trying it yourself, so it’s even more important for a child to see the parent eating healthy as well. “Parents have to be the role models,” Schirmer says. “If you aren’t willing to eat the fruits or vegetables, your child will mimic that behavior and they won’t even have the exposure to the food.”
Be the Role Model Be Persistent. Chances are there won’t be tremendous success the first time a healthy food is introduced. But that’s normal, so parents shouldn’t give up. It’s important for parents to continue with the same healthy behaviors by eating the new food and continuing to expose the child to healthy eating. “It could also be that you just need to try preparing the food differently to change the texture,” Schirmer says. “A child may like carrots but prefer them raw instead of cooked or vice versa. Play around with the preparation to find a way that might be more appealing.” Limit Junk Food. It almost goes without saying that parents should severely limit empty calorie foods in order to get in food with more nutrients. Children, especially younger children,
Where We Know Your Child By Name
Involve Them in the Process. Any food can feel more fun to a child if they had a hand in the process. Simple things such as letting a child help create the dinner menu, letting them select a particular fruit or vegetable at the grocery store, or helping prep or cook the food in the kitchen can turn a food they would typically turn down into one of their favorites on the plate. “Simple things like this might not sound like a big deal, but they really can make a difference,” Schirmer says. “When kids are involved, they feel a sense of ownership and are much more likely to want to try it. Another potential option is starting an at-home garden that allows them to even grow some of the produce that they will eventually see on their plate.”

ODYSSEY EARLY SCHOOLS Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age appropriate curriculum, specifically designed to introduce each age grouping to lan-
guage, reading, math, science and more, so that your child will possess a strong foundation for Kindergarten and beyond. Additionally, we guarantee teachers with four-year education degrees in all preschool classrooms and offer exceptional child-to-teacher ratios. At our schools, you can watch your child’s entire day in live, streaming, HD video over the Internet, through an individual, secure connection linked directly to your child’s classroom. We want our parents to know what happens during
their child’s day, and Odyssey is the only Over-the-Mountain daycare to offer this service. Our team works tirelessly to earn its reputation as the best childcare option for Birmingham parents, and we invite you to visit today to witness for yourself what so many other families have known since 1995! Alabama Family Central
Providing Alabama families the help they need, when they need it There are a variety of organizations throughout Alabama aimed at helping families in a variety of situations – but finding the help when it’s needed is not always easy. Making it as easy as possible for families to get the organizations they need when they need it is the goal of Alabama Family Central. Alabama Family Central is a collaboration of state agencies and partners that exist to support parents, families, and caregivers in Alabama with a variety of resources and services to support the health and well-being of children. It does so through a comprehensive, easyto-use website that essentially serves as an all-in-one resource for the services Alabama families may need on everything in the categories of childcare, education, family services, and health services. After the Department of Children’s Affairs was created in 2001, Alabama Family Central had since been a goal. The website was announced in September of last year by Gov. Kay Ivey. “Alabama Family Central was created with Alabama families at the very heart,” says Malissa Valdes-Hubert, Alabama Department of Mental Health public information officer. “There was no centralized database to search critical community, regional, or state resources for the needs of a family. This free, comprehensive source is an open door to essential services. The Alabama Family Central website came online just as the pandemic began and what an opportune time! We were so thankful to share important resources during a time when individuals and families needed them most.”
26 | Birmingham Parent | THE FAMILY GUIDEOOK JANUARY 2022
The Alabama Family Central website features a comprehensive compilation of resources around the state in a directory-style format so that parents and families can easily find the particular support they may need. There are more than 350 services and programs listed, and the resources are broken down into the four categories – childcare, education, family services, and health services – and can easily be navigated directly from the site. And best of all, the website is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week so that parents and families can seek out help any time of day they may need it.
https://alabamafamilycentral.org The website also houses the latest new information parents, families, and caregivers need to know in order to best protect their children – everything from COVID-19 updates and guidance and information about the how to get the flu vaccine to the state’s COVID-19 School K-12 dashboard and how to apply for childcare grants. The Alabama Partnership for Children, a statewide public/private partnership that seeks to develop and strength systems, strategies, and public awareness for early childhood programs in the state, heads the Alabama Family Central Project, and there are a variety of state agencies included in the partnership. Those include Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education, Alabama Department of Education, Alabama Department of Human Resources, Alabama Department of Mental Health, Alabama Department of Public. Health, Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, Alabama Medicaid, A+ Education Partnership and the State of Alabama Office of Information Technology. THE FAMILY HOME By Cheryl Maguire
The Joy of Decluttering “Does this spark joy?” I asked myself. Cradling an apple spice candle in my hand, I sniffed the top of it. The scent is gone probably from sitting in the attic for 15 years, I thought. It definitely isn’t sparking any joy. I tossed it in the overflowing trash pile. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, a book by Marie Kondo, had been a best seller for 86 weeks when I first discovered it. That discovery prompted a month-long marathon decluttering of my house. I emptied every drawer, closet and bin which resulted in eleven bags for donation and ten for the garbage. I consider myself a “neat freak,” yet if I wrote a book how I “clean up,” it would end up in the clearance bin. My three children get annoyed with my “neat freak” ways. When they’re eating a meal, I’m right there wiping away the crumbs. Labeled bins hold their toys, clothes, or sports gear. If they don’t put their things in the proper place, they going to deal with my wrath. When I first heard of this book, I couldn’t figure out how she sold so many copies of a book about the least exciting topic I can think of. But as I read her book, I hung on every word. It was more captivating than the psychological thrillers I usually read. The deeper I delved, the clearer the central theme of the book became – to have the reader analyze their relationship to material items. 28 | Birmingham Parent | THE FAMILY GUIDEOOK JANUARY 2022
In the book Kondo states, “Putting things away creates the illusion that the clutter problem has been solved.” Even though everything I own is neatly stacked or stored in a bin, I rarely get rid of things. Like Kondo says, I was under the delusion I was living a clutter-free life. “You will never use spare buttons,” Kondo states. She’s right – I’ve never sewed a button on a shirt in my life, so why did I have a pile of buttons in my drawer? I could no longer ignore the clutter. “If you see an (electrical or cable) cord and wonder what on earth it’s for, chances are you’ll never use it again,” Kondo states. When I looked at the bag of unidentified cords I owned, I realized I had not used any of cords since I created the collection. The book got me to think about how I acquired each object I owned and why I held on to it. I realized that there was a pattern to why I kept items. I worried I might need it in the future or felt guilty about never using it. It was time for me to initiate step one in her book: “start discarding, all at once, intensely and completely.” This process should focus on “what we want to keep, not what we want to get rid of.” She suggests you do this by holding each item you own and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” At first this question seemed ridiculous to me, but I tried it despite my misgivings. “If you only keep the items which spark joy, then you surround yourself with things that make you happy,” Kondo says. This reorganization of your material things can lead to a transformation in your life and perception. For me, the biggest transformation came through discarding my unused items and unworn clothing. Kondo refers to this as “the magic
THE FAMILY HOME
effect of tidying.” She recommends saying to yourself, “Thank you for teaching me what doesn’t suit me.” This simple reframing thought process helped me to take my unworn red shirt with the tags on it and place it in the donation pile. Kondo says when you are done tidying, “You can see quite clearly what you need in your life and what don’t, and what you should and shouldn’t do.” She says it will increase your confidence since the process involves making decisions about whether to keep items. You are also forced to confront decisions you made in selecting your possessions and to hopefully learn from poor decisions. When I finished tidying, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Opening a drawer and finding a pen without any useless buttons, gave me pride in my ability to get rid of unnecessary things. I experienced a life transformation as well. In the fourth grade I wrote my first book which my teacher typed using a typewriter and a cloth to create a cover. I found this book while cleaning. It was a reminder of my love for writing which I had dabbled in throughout the years.

Travel Tips for
Family Trips By Sarah Lyons
Whether you take a two-hour plane trip or a 14-hour car ride, traveling with kids can be stressful. While a family vacation is a great way to spend time together, relax, and make memories, you must make the journey there first. Here are some tips for making traveling with kids a little more enjoyable. Fight hunger. Hunger can affect kids’ behavior and attitude. During travel, pack easy snacks for the car like grapes, smoothies, and crackers. This is a great time to purchase those individually wrapped snacks you usually don’t. They are easy for the adults in the car and seem like a treat for the kids. Stephanie Pratt, mother of two, suggests planning lunch stops that allow kids to burn off energy, like a restaurant with a play area or a picnic for the park. “Much like you need to stretch your legs, kids need to move,” she says. Timing. Timing is everything when you are traveling with little ones. Try to plan travel around normal naptimes or bedtimes so that kids will rest during most of the drive. Plan enough breaks and recognize that a trip with kids is going to take longer. Leave extra time in your travel schedule for impromptu stops, as well as planned ones. Websites like www.roadtripradar.com can help you find attractions and hidden gems along the way. Get the kids involved. Cut road trip boredom by getting the kids involved. Use games like license plate bingo or car color bingo. Encourage kids to keep a trip journal. Have them write down or draw favorite memories from each stop and add stickers and ticket stubs. “Make a checklist of cities you will drive through with a fun fact about each or what you will do there. It helps cut down on the ‘Are we there yet?’ questions” says Kara Thomas, a Colorado Springs mom. Surprises. It is always nice to have a few surprises up your sleeve
32 | Birmingham Parent | THE FAMILY GUIDEOOK JANUARY 2022
to break up the trip. Try packing up the kids’ backpacks and have them waiting in the car. When they get bored, pull out a few surprise items – new magazines or books, crayons and a new coloring book, special snacks, small activities, and maybe some new movies to watch. Websites like Pinterest are full of ideas for traveling with kids. “Paint a cookie sheet with chalkboard paint and give the kids magnets to play with,” suggests Darcy King, Kansas mom of two. She also suggests gluing magnets to the back of puzzle pieces to use with the magnetic cookie sheet. Electronics. For most families, the go-to solution for road trip boredom is electronics. DVD’s and video games are a great way to kill time in the car. “Loosen electronics time while traveling, but when you get there, restrict time more than usual. Without a gadget in their hands, they will get more out of your vacation time.”” Thomas says. Summer vacations teach kids to explore what is outside their hometown, the importance of family time, and to make downtime a priority. Best of all you will create memories that last a lifetime. Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer and mom of six kids.

Tips for
Efficient
Family Packing By Sarah Lyons
Family vacations are a great way to enjoy time away from the daily routine and create lasting memories. But if you are anything like me, packing for a family trip can be overwhelming, especially if you have multiple kids to pack for. As a mom of six, I’ve learned the hard way how to make our vacation packing more efficient. Start by making a master list. If you don’t have a list, you are bound to forget things. I have a list on my computer that I can copy, paste, edit, and print each time we are going out of town. I have additional lists for the type of trip. For example, we would need to bring different items if we are camping versus staying in a hotel. If you edit this list after each trip, it will become perfectly tuned to your family. Once you have a list, begin to delegate. My older kids receive a copy of their list and are told to pack their own bag. “Everyone gets a master checklist of items for the trip. We go over the bag they pack together to make sure they have everything.” says Jenny McKeever, mom of two. “This gives kids choices selecting items along with becoming responsible for packing, with just a little guidance from you.” This helps to reduce the amount of packing the parent has to do. For the most efficient packing, items can be packed by outfit. One option is to place a shirt, pants, underwear, and socks together and place in a zip top bag and seal. When you arrive at your destination, kids can grab a bag for the day. Dirty clothes can be placed back into the bag as well. “I am a roller.” says Holly Searles, mom of four. “I take an outfit, pants, shirt, underwear, and socks and then tightly roll. I often use a hair tie to secure the girls outfits.” Whatever method you choose, remember to place the outfits needed first on top. Another way to make packing more efficient is to bring fewer items. Make sure you only bring what you absolutely need, or you may find that the family vehicle is bursting at the seams. “I do not bring a lot of 34 | Birmingham Parent | THE FAMILY GUIDEOOK JANUARY 2022
stuff for the car ride. My kids do very well with a small toy, coloring book, small activity book, reading book, and the DVD player going.” says Sarah Imbierowiz, mother of seven. Remember that most items that are forgotten can be bought, borrowed, or gone without for a short time while you enjoy your vacation. The most important thing to remember is to plan ahead of time. If you have a complete list and you start working on packing well in advance, it should go smoothly, and you will be able to enjoy your vacation without dreading the packing that goes along with it. Sarah Lyons is a freelance writer and mother of six children.
Four Tips for Today’s Fashion at an Affordable Price By Kimberly Blaker
We Have You
Kids grow quickly, and before you know it, they need new clothes. Because fashion is often an integral part of a child’s self-image, a new wardrobe often comes at a high cost. But with advance planning, your kids can still wear the latest trends at a price that fits your wallet.
O
ut with the old? To keep costs down, make the most of your kid’s current wardrobe. Eliminate outgrown or outdated articles and save basic or classic pieces that still fit. Inspect these items and replace missing buttons, mend seams, patch tears, and remove stains. If shoes still fit, increase their life by replacing worn heels, broken eyelets, and dirty shoelaces. Then freshen them with a good shoe cleaner and brightener or polish. For clothing that has lost its vibrancy, or if your kid just no longer likes the color, try dyeing to a new color. Powdered Rit dye is inexpensive. Style is important to kids. Create new fashionable outfits by pairing an old basic shirt with a new pair of jeans and a stylish belt. Or mix a pair of old but still good jeans with a shirt in one of fall’s new colors. Finally, determine what garments have something to match and which are incomplete, then carry a list of needs when you shop.
S
et your budget. Before you shop, go over your list and explain the budget to your kids. If designer label battles start, offer your kids the option to pay the difference above what has been budgeted for that item.

SHOP TILL YOU DROP
Clothing Kids for Less:
SHOP TILL YOU DROP
Avoid buying clothing sets. Instead, select versatile pieces. Look online or in the weekend edition of your metropolitan area newspaper for sales and coupons. Then compare store prices before heading out to make sure it’s the best deal.
S
econdhand savvy. Today, families in all income brackets are reaping the benefits of secondhand shopping. Depending on your child’s age and personality, you may need to alleviate any fears and objections. Assure your child or adolescent that no one will know the clothes are secondhand unless they choose to disclose it. Also, point out the savings could result in a larger, and possibly better, wardrobe. When you shop secondhand, inspect clothing thoroughly for stains, tears, broken zippers and snaps, frayed pant cuffs, and other damage. Check for body odor and mildew smells that may be difficult to wash out. And try on clothes before taking it home since it may not be returnable. Secondhand clothes can be found at garage sales, thrift stores, consignment and resale shops, and even online. Prices vary, so explore all the options in your area. Kids’ shirts typically range between $2 and $10 and jeans between $4 and $15 depending on size, condition, label, and the store. A no-cost option is to form a clothing swap with family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Each person should label the boxes of clothing according to gender and size. Then get together for the exchange and watch your child’s new wardrobe grow.
C
lothes that last. Make your kid’s new wardrobe last by following washing instructions, especially for teen girls’ clothing. Some fabrics will shrink beyond recognition if not laundered correctly. Boys are especially hard on pants knees. Give pants extra wear by sewing a fun patch on each knee (after making sure your child is okay with it). Unless shopping for the less-choosy younger set, have your kids approve all purchases. Otherwise, the duds will hang in the back of their closet. While regularly worn shoes should fit properly, purchase articles such as rain gear or dress shoes that’ll seldom be worn one-half to a full size larger to get through an extra season. When selecting rain gear in this manner, choose a style that will not cause your child to trip or obstruct her view. Kimberly Blaker is a freelance parenting and lifestyle writer.
