EDITOR'S NOTE
Welcome to The Guide 2015
W
elcome to the third annual installment of Birmingham Parent’s THE GUIDE. This issue replaces our regular January issue of Birmingham Parent and will be available as a companion to our monthly issues all year long. It’s become increasingly popular in the two years since we started it – so much so that others are copying our idea! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… right?” There may be others, but we think you will find Birmingham Parent’s THE GUIDE to be the most comprehensive book of lists for the parent in Central Alabama that you can keep and use all year long. You’ll find this a useful resource when you need a phone number, need to know what time your library closes, how to locate the local driver’s license office (did I mention this is great for newcomers?) and much more, all here at your fingertips. Be sure to thank the sponsors and advertisers who make this issue possible by doing business with them, and telling them you read about them in THE GUIDE. Please let us know, too, what you want to see in in the next issue of THE GUIDE 2016!
Have a great 2015! Carol Muse Evans, Publisher/Editor carol@birminghamparent.com

editorial We’ve worked hard to double check times, addresses, phone numbers and websites. Many thanks to office assistant Bethany Adams for her tireless and thorough work to do so. But please know that things do change in a year, so double check times, addresses, and phone numbers, etc. when you can. And this is just the beginning of a 12th great year of Birmingham Parent! We’ll have our camp issue in February, and our long-running Camp Expo 2015 on Feb. 14, 2015, back at Colonial Brookwood Village. Then the special needs issue in March, along with the Special Needs Expo on March 14, 2015, at United Cerebral Palsy’s LINCPoint. And there’s so much more going forward, from Family Favorites Awards to our birthday party Issue, College & Career Planning Guide and The Baby Book. Thanks for continuing to read our publication. Many thanks to our sponsors and advertisers who make it all possible. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for our great Monday giveways, fun facts and much more, and be sure to check out our website at www.birminghamparent.com.

COVENANT CLASSICAL SCHOOLS & DAYCARE ®
Covenant Classical Schools is passionate about four things: Christianity, Children, Character, and Classical Education. These passions are the pillars upon which CCS has been built; they are the foundation for our vision and mission as well as our philosophy and methodology. Christ: We are a Christ-centered non-denominational school. This is reflected in the daily Bible lessons which are taught by each
campus Director. Children: At CCS we strive to enhance the early years of wonder and amazement by purposefully creating an environment where each child is built up emotionally, challenged academically, poured into spiritually, encouraged developmentally, and most of all, loved daily. Character: As Christian parents and teachers, we realize that instilling good (biblical) character
traits in our children while they are young is vital in preparing them for life. Classical Education: At CCS, our desire is to maximize this eagerness to learn by providing structured classrooms and using a curriculum that paves the way for a lifetime of learning. We recognize the importance of the first six years of every child’s life and strive to unlock the remarkable potential in every child

ODYSSEY EARLY SCHOOLS Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age-appropriate curriculum,

MEET OUR BACK COVER SPONSORS CHILDREN'S DANCE FOUNDATION Gazing through Children’s Dance Foundation’s two-way studio mirrors as children twirl and sing, parents witness the appreciation for the arts that develops in the dance studio. CDF also has extensive outreach programs that go far beyond their studios in Downtown Homewood. CDF’s Community Partnership Program has served children at dozens of social service agencies, child care
centers and schools throughout Birmingham since 1975. The curriculum designed by CDF helps the children to explore their imagination, improve balance and strength, and enhance coordination through music, dance, stories, games and tactile objects. CDF’s School Touring Program presents the academically-linked dance performances, “Math in Motion” and “The Magic Circle” at schools all over the
state. Using a curious collection of props and diverse music, four professional dancers present math concepts through dance and include audience participation throughout the show. CDF provides opportunities for students of all ages and abilities to learn through the power of dance and the arts. Discover how you want to be involved and take a virtual tour of CDF’s studios and theatre at www.childrensdancefoundation.org.

ELIZABETH PERRY RUSHTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER The Elizabeth Perry Rushton Child Development Center was founded in 1995 by First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham as a mission to the community and to support families working in the downtown area. Today, the Rushton Center is a separate nonprofit organization that serves children ages six weeks through four years. The goal of the Rushton Center is to provide quality childcare in a loving, nurturing environment for children
whose parents work in or near downtown Birmingham. At the core of the Rushton Center’s philosophy is the belief that children learn by experiencing their environment and the things and people in it. We feel that experiences are best accomplished through play or “learning by doing.” The teacher’s role is to provide a challenging and stimulating environment in which children can freely explore their surroundings so that the
total development of each child is enhanced. Children grow and develop physically, socially, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. Our state-of-the-art facility, active learning approach to curriculum and qualified staff create the type of environment that will give children developmentally appropriate choices and critical thinking skills while promoting growth in each of these areas. 2118 4th Ave N. We can help your child succeed in the areas of speech/language development, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, sensory processing, attention/concen-
tration, feeding concerns, and academic delays. Last spring, we introduced our highly successful intensive treatment program for ADD/ADHD, Focal Point. Our brightly colored, beautiful facility consists of 8000 square feet of state of the art space designed just for kids! It includes 2 sensory motor gyms, kid-friendly and adult waiting areas, feeding therapy room, multi-purpose toddler/preschool room, numerous private therapy rooms, and a

space just for teens and preteens. Parents are welcome to participate in therapy. However, they are also able to view and listen to their child’s session from the waiting areas on special tablets via webcam technology. Our special programming includes Orton Gillingham reading therapy, the “SOS” approach to feeding therapy, Handwriting Without Tears, Interactive Metronome, and Integrated Listening.

APPLAUSE DANCEWEAR Applause Dancewear, a retail dancewear store has just celebrated its 34th year in business, located in the same place it opened in 1981, and still family owned and operated since the first day. They carry everything a dancer could possibly want for any kind of dancing. Applause also carries liturgical wear for church groups, amazing gymnastics leotards for every age, and batons, boots and rhinestones for dancelines and majorettes.
The store was originally opened by Buddy and Cindy Wade when Cindy was the choreographer of The Star Spangled Girls at Homewood High School. After managing the store while receiving her marketing degree at UAB, their daughter Katie set her sights on owning Applause and building the business. With her parents’ permission, Katie took over the store in 1992. She has continued to staff the store with dancers, knowing that
having employees who have practical application in the items they are selling and the experience to back the products will always make a customer more comfortable and secure when purchasing specialty items. She knows as a mom, how overwhelming it can be to purchase items for your children that you may not have had your own experience with. 1629 Oxmoor Road Homewood, AL 35209 www.applausedancewear.net

JOSEPH BRUNO MONTESSORI SCHOOL Our educational practices are built around the belief that children are born with the strong need to discover and learn. We treat their curiosity and creativity with great care, allowing them to explore their interests from an early age. We provide lessons, even the most challenging ones, that make learning exciting and stimulate the desire to know more. Lessons are given to small groups and individually, so that they can understand the concepts
presented. Our students are our first priority, and we take time to listen and help them find answers. Older students learn through seminars, laboratory experiments, and hands-on projects. Reading, research, and discussion are important parts of our curriculum. At Bruno Montessori Academy, students are encouraged to develop independence, responsibility, resourcefulness, and organizational skills. In the Lower Elementary, students use
individual work plans listing their goals for the week. Visitors will see our students working individually and cooperatively to get their work done, enjoying the total learning experience. The enthusiasm must be seen to be believed. Children learn the importance of respect for one another and for their classroom environment. We have high expectations for our students, and they learn to set higher and higher standards for themselves.

favorite kids' docs of 2014 There’s nothing better than a personal recommendation when it comes to a doctor for you or your child. Imagine a big notebook full of those for all types of local doctors from friends who have “been there, done that.” Now you have it. This is the idea behind Birmingham Parent’s Favorite Kids’ Docs campaign – the opportunity to have this special list and give honor and credit to the faithful, caring and professional doctors and medical professionals who serve our children every day in our community. The process is totally reader driven – we call for nominations, and moms and dads, uncles, grandparents and other caregivers go online and nominate a favorite kid’s doctor and tell us why. There’s no prize reward for nominating – just the opportunity to tell people why you love your child’s doctor. Now in its fourth year, we honor those special pediatricians, specialists, optometrists, dentist and other health professionals and offer you the reader a little parent-toparent advice. And know when you see our little logo in the doctor’s office; your doctor is a “Birmingham Parent Favorite Kids’ Doc!”
Watch for another chance to nominate your favorites in 2015!

At Covenant Classical Schools®, our vision is not just to accommodate for a day to day service—it is much more intentional. We want to serve alongside families and communities to build relationships that impact the lives of the children that walk through our doors. Our goal is to accomplish this with a structured environment paired with a focus on Christ-like character. Ultimately, at the end of the day, we know that the difference truly is in the details of life—it’s the little things that speak volumes. And at CCS, those little things make all the difference. NOT ONE MORE: Raising Awareness about Suicide E
very 13.3 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies by suicide, according to the most recent report by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans, and for young people, the numbers are even more startling. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that suicide is actually the third leading cause of death for youth between the ages of 10 and 24 and results in approximately 4,600 young lives lost each year. A nationwide CDC survey of youth in grades 9 through 12 showed that 16 percent of students reported seriously considering suicide, with 13 percent of those creating a plan and 8 percent trying to take their own life. In the small, tight-knit community of Mountain Brook, this topic hits a little too close to home. The city experienced a wave of more than a dozen suicides by youth in the last two years – including four suicides since Thanksgiving 2013 – prompting many in the community to action. “My son had lost three good friends over the span of about a year and a half,” says Sandy Lanter. “We knew we had to do something. I can’t imagine the grief the families have faced but fully know the sadness and stress we have faced. It’s time to wake up and help each other. Silence is no longer golden in our town. People are dying.” After discussion with another Mountain Brook mother, Lanter created a Facebook Group called Aware. The goal is to raise awareness within the community about mental illness, substance abuse, depression and suicide. Within two months, the group had nearly 1,000 members. “Aware is our way to de-stigmatize these topics and educate people so that we don’t lose one more person,” says Kat Lawson, a Mountain Brook resident who is on the group’s planning committee. “No one needs to suffer alone, and the stigma of mental illness and substance abuse and suicide is a lot of times why people suffer alone because they don’t want people to know they are hurting. We must try to encourage people to hurt out loud so they can get the help they need. There is help.”
48 | birminghamparent | the guide 2015
Aware’s planning committee, comprised of a variety of Mountain Brook residents, has been working to organize and host various community outreach events called Aware Town Talks. Each Town Talk focuses on a variety of topics related to suicide prevention and brings in speakers who have been touched by the topic as well as professionals who can provide educational information. “Parents need to know what to look for and what to do,” says Julie White, another planning committee member. “We must start the conversation to reduce the stigma and get this out in the open so people can talk about it.” Many members of the group’s planning committee have stories of their own to share that they believe can help others. Lawson has faced mental illness and attempted suicide. “I had some issues going on, plus I had lost my sister and I was in pain,” Lawson says. “I was so afraid to tell anyone how bad it was. “Luckily, my attempt didn’t work and I was able to get the help I needed. It has been 11 years since my attempt and I’m so glad I’m still alive. I have a wonderful life and I know I don’t want to die. That realization really brought out the drive in me to fight for my own mental health. Sometimes people just need to be encouraged to fight.” Lulu Null, another committee member, also knows too well the reality of depression and suicide. “What helped me was finally realizing how important my life was to my family,” Null says. “And that’s a hard bridge to cross when you’re in a dark place. Getting better takes baby steps. You can’t do it all overnight. You have to do it one step at a time, one day at a time, one hour at a time and some days even one minute at a time. And that’s okay.” The group’s planning committee is hoping that stories of survival like this, along with other speakers and educational tools, will not only encourage someone struggling with depression and thoughts of suicide to speak up but also let parents know what to look for with their children. “Having conversations and having people present their own experiences and letting people ask questions will hopefully help others who have never been there
By Paige Townley
understand how alienating and isolating depression can be,” says Sue Martin, a suicide survivor and committee member. “Families need to have honest and open conversations. We must remove the taboo and the shame and start talking about it. If young people can sit around the dinner table with their parents and have conversations about a myriad of other medical conditions, then this can be discussed,” Martin says. “When that happens, I think young people and all of us really can begin to understand that it might happen. It might happen in this family. It might happen to someone sitting around that dinner table. As long as there is life, there is hope. But you have to stay alive and ask for help.” Paige Townley is a local freelance writer.
The following are some potential risk factors for suicide, according to the CDC: History of previous suicide attempts Family history of suicide History of depression or other mental illness Alcohol or drug abuse Stressful life event or loss Easy access to lethal methods Exposure to the suicidal behavior of others Incarceration

Finding a Forever Home
WITH HEART GALLERY ALABAMA
By Lori Chandler Pruitt
F
oster parents Karen and Timothy Pridgen of Enterprise have opened their home to many children since 2010. All along, though, they watched the Heart Gallery Alabama website for photos and videos of children who were eligible for adoption . “We were open to adopt a child of any age,” Karen says. “Then some foster teens came to our home to live with us for a while, and we enjoyed it. We already knew that by the time a foster child is 11 to 12 years old, they are taught to stop hoping for adoption.” They kept coming back to the videos of two sisters, in foster care for at least seven years, who wanted to stay together. After going through the adoption process, in September 2013 they became mom and dad to Kimberly, 16, and Brittany, 15.
50 | birminghamparent | the guide 2015
“The Heart Gallery is great because you can watch the videos and see photos of the children who are eligible for adoption, and get to know them,” Karen says. “They become real kids. So many people are scared to adopt older children because they think they are more broken. But no, kids are kids and they need rules, a home and a family. We found it was easier to adopt older children because they’ve been through the system, they’ve had counseling and they have worked through the issues that got them here. They are ready for a family.” About 5,000 children are currently in foster care in Alabama, and about a fourth of them will not be able to return to their biological families, nor be adopted by their foster families. According to Heart Gallery Alabama (HGA), more than 500 children statewide are legally available for adoption, and the organization’s job is to help as many of them find their “forever family” as possible. Since 2005, the non-profit HGA has photographed close to 900 children, and 70 percent of those children have been placed in permanent, loving families. HGA recruits professional photographers to take meaningful portraits that capture the unique spirit of each child, along with a video interview. These portraits are shown on the website and in gallery exhibits across the state where prospective adoptive parents can learn more about them. “The kids we feature have to be willing to put themselves out there, and all they want is a safe, loving family,” says Michelle Bearman-Wolnek, executive director. “They’re not looking for palaces; they’re looking for a stable, quiet home and not have to move again. Many of these children are age 8 and up, and as they get older, it is harder for them to be adopted.” The website is full of fresh-faced, smiling children in photographs, with descriptions and videos that give prospective parents a peek into their personality. “Our goal is that families who are interested in adoption can get all the support they need in the adoption process and they won’t feel rushed,” says Joycelyn Haywood , HGA communications and marketing manager. “The videos and photos help them get a better idea of the best match.” A family who is interested in adoption first goes through training and home studies. HGA partners with other agencies in the adoption process, Haywood says. All families, foster or adoptive, go through 30 hours of training that prepares them for bringing a child into their home. Home studies also are conducted that are free to families who are interested in adopting a child eight or older. “The home studies make sure the child will have a permanent space in the home, that it’s safe and provides a good environment,” Haywood says. “We also do background and health checks on parents. We’re not looking for perfect people, but we do want to make sure that there is a good situation and that someone will be able to take care of the child.” During the studies, the families also are asked what age child would best fit their needs. After the family has completed all classes and studies, they can then consider the children who are available for adoption.
TAKE CONTROL OF ADD/ADHD
A customized treatment program for children with ADD/ADHD Uses current technologies of Interactive Metronome and Integrated Listening Systems to build neurological pathways that enhance overall functional abilities.
“There’s a right child out there for the right family,” Haywood says. “And for many families, they realize they are going to make a difference in the life of a child.” After a child is placed in the home, there is a three- to sixmonth waiting period to ensure that the child and family is a good match. Children who are not adopted “age out” of the foster care system at the age of 21, and without the support of a family, their outlook is grim. Nearly 3,000 Alabama children age out of the foster care system each year. According to HGA, a fourth will not receive a high school diploma or GED; fewer than 3 percent will earn a college degree, although 70 percent want to attend college; one in four will be incarcerated within the first two years after leaving the system and one in five will become homeless.
“I just ask that people who want to adopt consider an older child. These kids need a family who will love them and give them a future.” As for the Pridgens, who are still foster parents to other children, their daughters are doing well in school, active in church, have friends and enjoy their new home. “Kids are in foster care through no fault of their own,” Karen says. “I just ask that people who want to adopt consider an older child. These kids need a family who will love them and give them a future.” Bearman-Wolnek agrees. “The need for a home doesn’t go away.” For more information or to find a Heart Gallery of Alabama exhibit, go to www.HeartGalleryAlabama.com.

hile it may seem awfully early to be thinking about this, in the world of camps and summer programs, it’s never too early to be exploring the possibilities, asking questions and getting your child enrolled in the summer program he or she most desires before they fill up. This year, we’ve brought back our very popular Birmingham Parent’s Camp Expo, now back at Brookwood Village, on Feb. 14, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. Current sponsors are 106. 9 FM the Eagle and ABC 33/40. It’s a great opportunity to meet with camp counselors face to face and ask questions, pick up brochures, explore the possibilities and the costs, enter drawings and enjoy local entertainment. We’ll help you answer that question, “What does my child want to do this summer?” Whether your child is a toddler, a graduating senior, or somewhere in between, you can find a summer opportunity at Camp Expo. And we’ll have day camps, away camps, adventure travel camps and much more. If you are a camp, church, or summer program interested in exhibiting, please contact us asap at info@birminghamparent. com or call 205-987-7700. It’s going to be a great expo – and a great summer!
