WELCOME TO THE PARTY! This month, Birmingham Parent celebrates parties, especially birthday parties for kids! However, many of the ideas in this issue could be great for family celebrations of other types like reunions, team parties, scouts, church or camps and much more! We hope you’ll enjoy this issue and keep it all year for a party idea ANY time of year! And remember you can always access back issues of Birmingham Parent at www.birminghamparent.com. We haven’t forgotten Dad this month. June is special also because of Father’s Day, so be sure to check out our story by Pam Molnar, “Ten Things We Didn’t Know about Fatherhood” on page 34. It’s a cool read. And on a very serious note, be sure to read Stephanie Rodda’s “Childhood Trauma Triggers” on page 22. For anyone who has been through trauma as a child themselves, or has a child who has, this is an informative piece you won’t want to miss. It’s all true – every time I smell certain smells, I think of my mom, my grandma, a friend, and those are good memories for me. But for some, those smells and other reminders are triggers for things that aren’t so pleasant to recall. This story explains this phenomena and ways to cope. Don’t miss our July issue of Birmingham Parent when we’ll announce all the winners of our annual Family Favorites Awards, one of the longest running contests of this type in the Birmingham area. You don’t want to miss it! We’ll also include our second annual Childcare and Preschool Guide, another “don’t miss” for those with little ones!

PAR E N TI N G

Parenting with Dr. Friedman

Q:

My son and a few of his friends papered a yard and used weed killer to write the name of a family on their lawn in our neighborhood. The family was irate

and reported it to the police. This has cost us money in legal fees and has divided the neighborhood into “for and against” cliques. Will you tell people that kids are just kids and that it would have been better to just come and talk to us rather than going to the law enforcement folks? We would have made the boys repair the lawn but now we are on their side, against them. While you do have a point that the situation might have been handled between neighbors, you do need to be careful not to take your son’s side so strongly that he feels supported in his illegal and harmful actions. If you reinforce his behavior as correct, and blame the victim, he is likely to do it again. The “kids are just kids” comment doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. The vast majority of teenagers do not vandalize property. It sounds like your neighbor responded in anger and called the police. While vandalism is a criminal offense and he was within his rights to do so, the old-fashioned way – and maybe still the best way – is to speak to a neighbor and work out the conflict. I say this on the assumption that your son and his friends have not done this before. If this is a repeated pattern of behavior, your neighbor was correct in what he did. Either way, calling the police was one of the options available to him. Your child needs to know this. It might curb his doing it again.

Despite your anger at your neighbor, you still need to be clear with your son that vandalism is both a crime and an assault on the victim. You need to teach him to look for win-win situations in interpersonal relationships, rather than getting his kicks from exerting power over a victim. If you allow and encourage your son to engage in nasty and aggressive actions, he will not attract friends or a spouse who is kind and thoughtful. How your son behaves will determine the kind of people who surround him. When parents teach the golden rule, they give their child a gift for life. If they make excuses for inappropriate behavior, they teach their child that he is above the law. This will result in his having trouble holding a job and keeping friends and spouse. In the long run, it will make him miserable. Be clear that he owns this problem. When you take responsibility for your own behavior you are powerful. You can change a situation

that is not going well, by behaving differently. If you don’t own responsibility for your actions, you are powerless. You cannot change others, only yourself. After you get your anger under control, you might want to approach your neighbor and offer to repair the lawn. I would not suggest that you tie this to his dropping the charges. I believe that if you make restitution in good faith he might do this on his own. You and your son need to take the first step whether or not the neighbor responds. Your behavior should not be determined by your neighbor’s response. You are not doing this primarily for your neighbor. You are doing it to teach your son how to behave. Your son should bear responsibility for the repair either financially or through his own labor. This is the consequence for making a bad choice. If you pay for the damage you will be missing a valuable opportunity to parent effectively.

S H O RT STU FF Bicycle Safety: Know Before You Go In 2015, there were more than 467,000 bicycle-related injuries and more than 1,000 deaths in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So before you ride, make sure you, your bicycle and your knowledge of the road are ready. “Bicyclists should be predictable, visible and aware,” says David Schwebel, Ph.D., professor at the UAB College of Arts and Sciences. “By taking precautions before you ride and while you are riding, you can significantly decrease the risk of injury or death.” Almost 74 percent of fatal bicycle crashes involve head injury, according to the Cochrane Reviews, so it is crucial to wear a helmet that fits snugly with the strap on. Make sure the helmet is ANSI or SNELL approved by the federal government. Wear clothes that are bright or easily seen and fits tightly. In warmer weather, consider wearing knee and elbow pads. Make sure your bike is ready for the road. Check for appropriate air in the tires, if you are riding the proper bike size, adjust the seat, put reflectors on the front and back, check all parts and grease chains if needed. Know the rules of the road. Bicyclists are held to the same laws as motorists. They are considered vehicles when ridden in the street. Rules of the road include:

SHERIFF’S CORNER: Keep Your Family Safe Around the Pool

• Never ride against the flow of traffic

By JEFFCO Sheriff Mike Hale

• Obey all traffic laws

Tragically, more than 200 children drown each year in swimming pool accidents. Here are a few suggestions to make your summer swimming safe:

• Know pedestrians always have the right of way if riding on the sidewalk • Use hand signals. Signal a left turn by extending the left hand out. Signal a right turn by extending the left arm out from the body, pointing the forearm and hand up in a right angle. • Look both ways before crossing the street “No matter where children are riding bicycles, it is important for parents to educate them on bicycle safety and provide supervision,” Schwebel says. Parents should supervise children bicycling just as they would children walking on the road. Stay close, help with busy traffic areas, and monitor safety closely.

• Whenever a pool or hot tub is not in use, cover it. This will keep curious children from entering when adults are not present. • Keep first aid supplies and pool safety equipment near the pool for fast access. • Limit pool access by installing a fence. It can be either permanent or temporary. Whichever you choose, it should be at least 4 feet high. • Install a pool entry alarm. This will sound an alarm if a child sneaks out and gets into the pool. These are relatively inexpensive and well worth the cost. • Never leave a child unattended in or near a pool. Tragedies can happen quickly. • Give a child swimming lessons. This is one of the best remedies for ensuring a safe and fun-filled summer.

GEAR UP Grant is Helping with College Readiness In its fourth year, a seven-year initiative to increase college and career readiness for 10,808 high school students in Alabama’s Black Belt is providing much-needed resources and guidance to prepare them for their first year of college. There have been many milestones since work on the $60.2 million Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness of Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant was awarded in 2014 to the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education, $24.5 million of which is from the U.S. Department of Education and $35.7 million matched by donations from partners and in-kind support. The cohort of students in the program represents 43 high schools in 17 counties. “The first three years were spent creating a foundation for students,” said Tonya Perry, Ph.D., principal investigator. “Now that they are all in ninth and 10th grades, we are building on that earlier infrastructure, providing additional opportunities for students, such as dual enrollment, strategic camp experiences, ongoing ACT review, and mentoring and advising sessions to prepare them for college and careers.” In 2015, the Alabama Community College System entered into a partnership with GEAR UP Alabama to provide full tuition waivers to students in the classes of 2020 and 2021 who meet specified criteria for admission to attend any public community or technical college in the state. The ACCS also committed to providing tuition assistance to parents of GEAR UP Alabama students who qualify for admission. Currently, more than 30 parents have taken advantage of the opportunity to go back to school. —Courtesy of UAB

Alabama State Treasurer Young Boozer recently announced the passage of Act 2018-280 introduced by Rep. Ken Johnson and Sen. Dick Brewbaker, which gives guardians full financial capabilities when opening and managing an Enable Savings Plan Alabama account for qualified persons with disabilities. “Alabama’s recent guardianship decision will serve to benefit many individuals and their families throughout the state, providing greater access to an important resource, the Enable Program,” Boozer says. “Giving guardians this power simplifies matters for individuals with disabilities by allowing guardians to open, invest in, and manage an Enable account.” Enable Savings Plan Alabama is a financial program that allows individuals with disabilities to open tax-exempt savings accounts to save for disability-related expenses without impacting resource-based benefits. The program permits individuals with disabilities to save more than a total of $2,000 in assets (cash, savings, etc.) in their name in an Enable account. Alabama High Schools in Top 5 in Personal Finance Education

Alabama ranks among the top five states in the nation in terms of high school personal finance education, according to the Champlain College Center for Financial Literacy. Alabama earned an A on the center’s recent report card, ranking second after Utah, which earned an A+. John Pelletier, director of the Champlain center, says Alabama’s A grade is because all students in the state must take a year-long career preparedness course that includes the equivalent of a semester course in personal finance. This course began with last year’s graduating class. Pelletier says the report card is one of several efforts made by the center to advocate for improved personal finance education, noting that financial literacy among Americans is linked to positive outcomes like wealth accumulation, stock market participation, retirement planning, and avoiding high-cost alternative financial services like payday lending and auto title loans. To view the list, visit www.champlain.edu.

ULTIMATE BIRTHDAY

PARTY GUIDE

STRESS LESS & PARTY MORE: 40 Birthday Fun Zones Away From Home

One simple strategy will minimize birthday party preparation, clean up, and cost – having your birthday party somewhere else besides home. Any birthday party can get expensive, and you might think having a party away from home doubles the cost. But believe it or not, the amount you spend often goes down when you have the party away from home. Consider the full package deal offered by the venue before you lift a finger to help. Once you factor in all the food, favors, and serving items you won't have to buy, you just might save yourself a bundle of time, energy and headaches. Get the details on exactly what will be provided in advance, so you don't duplicate any efforts in filling in the gaps. Heather Holmes, owner of Pump It Up Pelham, says they love to help take care of the details and let you enjoy the special day. “Parents like the convenience of a party with us. Parents love to have someone look out for their needs, and have no mess to deal with,” Holmes says. If the venue does not cover every detail, 14 | birminghamparent | june 2018

this can work fine. Bring the cake? No problem. Order a few pizzas? Easy. Bring some goody bags? If that's all you have to do for this party, you are going to love it. Some of your favorite birthday party memories may end coming from the party where you did the least work. You send the invites, show up, and watch everyone go home with big smiles on their faces. No smile will be as big as the one you have on your face when you return to your nice, clean home. Here is a full run-down of birthday party venues that often host parties away from home. Before you write off any candidates, be sure to search online and call to double check. Birthday parties are big business, and businesses often add birthday party hosting after opening day, once services are established. So, go ahead, ask your friends and neighbors for ideas, but remember, nothing beats being the first family on the block to discover a cool new party zone no other family has tried yet. Ready, set, party! Locations are listed here from youngest appropriate age to oldest:

ULTIMATE BIRTHDAY

PARTY GUIDE

A FESTIVE MESS!

17 Creative Birthday Activities For An Unforgettable Party

I don't mean to brag, but my husband and I have thrown quite a few awesome birthday parties over the years. However, when reflecting back over all the parties we've thrown, it's clear to me that the most memorable parties were not the most elaborate or even the most expensive. They were simply the messiest. Messy and birthday parties go together better than you might imagine. After all, what could be more festive than a little bit of parent-approved pandemonium? In that spirit, here is a list of 17 indoor and outdoor ideas that won't break the bank. 16 | birminghamparent | june 2018

1. TAKE AIM, COLOR. Mark off a square play arena outdoors with five-feet-tall bamboo garden stakes and blue painters’ masking tape. Fill squirt guns or squirt bottles with non-toxic watercolor paints, don a pair of clear swim goggles, and let the kids decorate each other dressed in white t-shirts and leggings or sweats. The only rule is no one leaves the field until the paint is all spent. 2. TAKE A WHACK AT IT. Fill a store-bought piñata two-thirds of the way full with cooked, well-drained spaghetti. Add small plastic toys, foil-wrapped granola bars, and plastic wrapped candies. To extend the fun, hang the piñata on a pull cord threaded through an eyehook so you can pull it up and down as kids swing at it with a bat or broom handle. Secure a tarp underneath with duct tape (indoors) or camping stakes (outdoors) for easy cleanup.

3. EGGCENTRIC ART. Break the tops off real eggs and pour the yolks and whites into plastic storage containers to make quiche or a soufflé later. Keeping empty shells in the carton, fill each with acrylic paints of various colors. Outside or in the garage or basement, hang a large canvas against a sturdy wall or fence and let the kids take aim and fire until they make a masterpiece. Use plastic drop cloths to catch the splatters as needed. 4. FRANKEN-BEAUTY. Make natural facial masks out of banana, avocado or cocoa. Sit guests around a large table in pairs to take turns applying masks to each other's faces. Be sure to have some hand mirrors handy so everyone can see what all the squeals are about. 5. CONSTRUCTION JUNCTION. Supply lots of sheets, blankets and pillows for fort

VO TED #1 PA RTY construction. If you can mount a few hula hoops strategically around the room, they come in handy. You might also supply bandanas and bungee cords. Be sure to inspect the results for hazards. Keep food and drinks strictly separate. 6. REACH FOR THE FOAM. Play messy Twister in the yard by mixing foam shaving cream and food coloring. Wear clothing that can get stained. If stains aren’t desired, simply use white shaving cream for the same effect. 7. PUDDING SLIDE. Make about a gallon of chocolate pudding. Drop large spoonfuls of pudding onto a Slip & Slide. Have guests take a running start down a low-grade slope. To make the slide more slippery, have guests sprinkle it with water from a sprinkler can or set the hose sprayer to mist. Add more pudding or water, as needed. 8. SLIME BALL. Find an online recipe to make nontoxic slime and let guests prepare it. Then play a game of hide the bouncy ball in the slime. Use a blindfold and a timer to see who can find their party favors the fastest. Enjoy the groans. 9. PICASSO FOOTSIE. Roll out a long sheet of paper and pour puddles of acrylic paint at one end. Have each guest step in one color per foot and walk across the paper. Switch to the other side of the paper to balance out the look. Hang art on a fence or wall to dry. 10. MUSICAL SILLY STRING. Put half the group in the middle on a plastic tarp. Encircle guests with the other half of the group. Turn on the music. Have the inside group move in one direction and the outside group move in the other direction, while spraying the inside group with silly string. When the music is turned off, switch groups. 11. PASTA FLING. Cook one box of spaghetti per party guest. Fill some five-gallon buckets two-thirds of the way with water. Add enough flour to thicken the water, then add spaghetti. The only rules are: use your own spaghetti, no bucket-dumping, and no touching – just throwing. Put them in the square play arena and get the heck out of the way. 12. MUD PUDDLE FUN. On a sturdy table at playing height, fill a small kiddie pool with dirt and just enough water to make mud. Add digging and pouring toys for an hour of industry for young guests. 13. DUCK-DUCK-DUMP. Have kids sit in circle for a game of Duck-Duck-Goose. But first, hand them a cup of water and a half-cup of flour to pour over each goose's head. 14. THE OPPOSITE OF TINY BUBBLES. Make bubble mix with ten cups of regular Dawn Dish soap and five gallons of water. Let it sit overnight. Do not agitate the solution as you pour it into a small wading pool slightly larger than a Hula Hoop in diameter. Have guest don a pair of clear goggles and stand in the middle of the pool without splashing. Let two party guests lower a Hula Hoop over the guest and then pull it straight up into a giant bubble.

15. THREE-LEGGED COLOR RUN. Set up a start and finish line for a short jaunt. Tie the legs of two guests together and have them wear clear swim goggles and white play clothing. Have other guests stand on the sidelines and throw color from bags of nontoxic Holi colors (the type used for Color Runs, available online). The winners take on the next pair of challengers until everyone has run. The most colorful pair wins. 16. SLOPPY VOLLEY. Divide guests into two groups. Put a line across the center or your play arena like a tennis court. Everyone has to stay on their own team and wear swim googles. Place a table of supplies within reach of the backcourt. On the table, supply large bowls of chilled mashed potatoes, Jello, pudding, and cooked oatmeal. Tint food with food coloring if clothing can be stained. On your mark, get set, food fight! 17. “TRASHION” RUNWAY. For a couple of months before the party, don't discard your reusable recyclables. Spread them out evenly in tarps with plenty of clear tape, masking tape, painter's tape and duct tape. Pair guests up into design teams. Give a time limit like one hour. The assignment is to design a runway-worthy fashion for each team out of only the trash that's been supplied. Have a runway show afterwards to display the results.

Messy and birthday parties go together better than you might imagine. After all, what could be more festive than a little bit of parent-approved pandemonium?

MAKING MESSY WORK FOR YOU Remember, the key to throwing an unforgettable party isn't about choosing the trendiest theme or the hottest destination or decorating your guts out with the latest Pinspirations. The key is simply to let kids make a mess and have fun doing it. These tips will save you some sanity. • If you can't go outside, consider using a well-ventilated garage, shed, or basement. • Check out the painting supply section of your local store for inexpensive items to protect your party space. • Have a designated photographer who may not be slimed, spaghettied or painted. • If you only have one messy activity planned, save the best for last. • If you go with a totally messy party, go with messy food, too, buffet style or make-your-own. • If you don't want kids to get stained or dirty, you can still make a mess. Just use smocks, shower caps, and bandanas to cover up.

Like most parents, Christina Katz' first instinct is not necessarily to throw the messiest party. But she's learned that sometimes it's fun to throw tidiness out the window for the sake of big birthday fun. 18 | birminghamparent | june 2018

• The sky's the limit when it comes to making messes. Use your imagination; then consider safety precautions, as needed.

CHILDHOOD

TRAUMA

TRIGGERS By Stephanie Rodda

Have you ever smelled a particular scent, tasted a certain food or heard a special song and instantaneously been reminded of an important event from your childhood? It is commonly understood that there are triggers that connect us to memories. I was very close to my maternal grandmother and although she has been gone many years, I can still smell the fragrance of a certain hand lotion and feel comforted as I think of her. It isn’t the aroma that holds such magical powers; it is the association that it holds for me to my grandma. My memories of her are sweet and they are precious to me. But what if the memories are not so dear? What about the triggers for trauma that may have been experienced during childhood? Melinda (name changed), who is now a mother, RN and grandmother, was once a frightened child, wondering when her next abuse would come. She shared with me some of her personal experiences of childhood trauma. “Often, I didn’t understand what I had done wrong.” The pain is still clearly real as she recounts the abuse, which was physical, sexual and emotional, that she faced as a young girl. Although she is now emotionally healthy, physically safe and professionally successful, the impact of those traumatic times is still present. Anxiety over making a wrong decision or of failing her own children are two examples as well as major trust issues that had to be overcome. Melinda’s faith has allowed her to recover and heal from those dark days and yet, there are still triggers. “To this day if I hear the song that was playing during the first episode of sexual abuse, I feel really sick and my eyes water and I have an overwhelming urge to run. Fortunately, it’s a really old song that doesn’t get played much.” Rachel Ashcraft, an occupational therapist with Child Play Therapy in Birmingham, specializes in childhood trauma triggers. She explains that triggers can also lead to emotional responses rather than a flashback. Perhaps, hearing a heated argument between adults might cause feelings of anxiety. Maybe feeling anxious triggers an impulse to run and hide. Overwhelming guilt or sadness from feeling happy can occur. Ashcraft and her husband are foster parents and actively advocate for children in foster care. Her non-profit organization, Foster the Future, provides an annual trauma informed continuing education day along with free occupational therapy screenings for children in foster care. Find more information at www.fosterthefuturealabama.org or on their Facebook page. Although not limited to fostered and adopted children, childhood trauma, to some degree, is certain to have been experienced by them and the results can go a long way in sabotaging the efforts of foster and adoptive parents. Unfortunately, removing children from existing trauma does not automatically remove the pain of the trauma that has already been experienced. Even into adulthood, trauma triggers can cause the person to relive the original event or emotions attached to that event. I interviewed Ashcraft and her words, as a professional and a parent, can help us all better understand the issue of trauma triggers:

• What criteria qualifies an event to be considered a trauma? The best way to understand what qualifies as trauma is to look at the ACE study by Anda and Felitti. ACE, or Adverse Childhood Experiences, include different types of trauma that can impact childhood. Complex or developmental trauma is when trauma repeatedly occurs throughout childhood. Trauma increases when a child’s internal and external resilience and resilience factors are inadequate to cope with the external threat. (Van der Kolk, 1989). You can see the questions here and find your own ACE score: https://acestoohigh.com/got-your-ace-score/. • It is my understanding that a trigger could be anything that causes the person to relive the pain of the original trauma. Can you expound? Yes, a trigger can cause the person to relive the pain of the original trauma or even just trigger a stress (fight, flight, freeze) response. Often people think of a trigger as being a very direct correlation where the person is in a very similar situation to the environment of the original trauma. But, a trigger can also be anything that taps into a fear response. It may appear to others to be a reaction that is overly intense for the situation but it is because a different neurobiological response has been triggered for that child or person. Bruce Perry has done extensive work on this and you can learn more at http://childtrauma.org/nmt-model/. continued on page 24

“Believe the best about your child and follow your instincts. Pray, pray, pray not only for your child but for wisdom for yourself. I know it’s almost impossible sometimes to tell if the root of a problem is medical, mental, emotional, or spiritual, or just a child being a child. But don’t rule anything out. Be careful of your own reactions so that your child is not afraid to talk to you.”

• How certain is childhood trauma found in a foster and/or adoptive child? Being in foster care or adopted inherently includes trauma, regardless of the age of the child at the time of adoption. One of the 10 questions on the ACE study quiz is “Before your 18th birthday, was a biological parent ever lost to you through divorce, abandonment, or other reason?” Every child who is adopted or in foster care would answer yes to this question. Depending on the child’s situation, foster and adopted children may have experienced more trauma than the loss of their biological family as well. But, it is crucial for adoptive families and professionals working with children to understand that the loss of biological family is a type of trauma and should not be minimized.

HERE WE

GROW! expands to new cities

• What are some tips for recognizing trauma triggers? If a child’s response does not seem to “fit” the situation, it could be a trauma trigger. Absolutely resist the urge to assume that a child is “being bad” or just “acting out” because labeling behavior that is triggered by trauma as bad will not help the child or change their behavior. Instead, this is the time to begin investigating the need being expressed behind the behavior. Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) is a great approach to better understand how to see the needs expressed behind the behavior. • What are some basic interventions that a parent or caregiver might start with? The first intervention as a parent or caregiver is really to equip yourself with good professionals and good training. I highly recommend anything provided by the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. Seek out a good counselor for yourself as well as a trauma informed counselor for your child. A trauma informed occupational therapist can help a great deal with sensory processing, regulation, social skills, and skill building for school, home, and community environments. • What words of encouragement would you share with a discouraged parent? Secondary trauma is a very real thing that foster and adoptive parents experience where they become weighed down and traumatized themselves as a result of trying to help their child who experienced trauma. Being a parent to a child who has experienced trauma is an amazing experience, but you must equip yourself to stay healthy for you and your family. I highly encourage parents to find a good counselor for themselves and their family. Seeking out good resources and finding people in your community

who are also fostering and adoptive parents will help build a community of support and keep you from feeling isolated during difficult seasons. Build in down time to your family so that you have the time and emotional capacity to implement the strategies you will learn from trauma informed training. Melinda also shared her thoughts for parents and caregivers, from the viewpoint of an abused child. Be careful of your own reactions so that your child is not afraid to talk to you.” As a foster parent of dozens of children for 15 years and now an adoptive parent of seven children who are now all teens and young adults, I wish I had been better prepared. I didn’t understand about trauma triggers or secondary trauma. I would often feel I had failed when children I cared for continued to struggle even though I was trying so hard to provide stability and give them the care they needed. If I had known better, if I had understood better, I would have fostered and parented better. Thankfully, it is not too late to do better as parents, grandparents and teachers. We can grow and learn and change. It isn’t too late for us or our children.

5 Things to Know About

Parents of Children with Special Needs By Rachael Moshman

My husband and I adopted our daughter when she was nine years old. She has a long list of mental health diagnoses. We quickly discovered that parenting a special needs child results in the whole family having a special set of needs. As I’ve interacted with other parents of children with special needs, I’ve noticed that regardless of the diagnosis, there are some factors that most of us have in common:

1.

We’re tired. Really, really tired. Exhausted, actually. This isn’t an occasional thing for us. We don’t miss out on a full night of sleep once in a while. It’s all of the time. My daughter suffers with insomnia and nocturnal panic attacks. It is not uncommon for her to be awake for most of the night. Even if we do get enough sleep, we’re still run down from all of the energy it takes to manage our child’s condition. Our schedules are packed with various doctor, therapy and psychiatric appointments, IEP meetings and trips to the pharmacy. On top of it all, we still have to go to work and keep up with general household duties.

2.

Our brains are constantly busy. We’re always considering possible triggers in every situation, wondering how to explain our child’s unique needs to others and worrying about the future. My daughter suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and seemingly innocent encounters can send her into a meltdown. I spend hours analyzing every one, looking for the trigger and making plans to help her process it and get through it better next time.

3.

We know more about our child’s condition than most doctors. I’ve read piles of books on mental health and my daughter’s specific diagnosis. I keep up with the latest research online. Her pediatrician, psychiatrist, therapist and other professionals have commented I know more than many of their colleagues. I had to become the expert for my child.

4.

We’re lonely. Our friends and family often have stepped away because our child’s needs made them uncomfortable. Or perhaps we had to step away from them because they refused to respect our boundaries and parenting decisions. Most special needs children don’t respond well to traditional parenting methods. Our brains may explode if we hear one more time that all our child needs is more discipline. Discipline isn’t the issue. Our child’s condition is – and that isn’t their fault or ours. My husband’s mother even cut off contact because she found our situation to be too stressful to be part of.

5.

We’re fragile. We feel judged all the time. We want what’s best for our child like any other parent and worry if we’re doing enough for them. We often don’t have enough time or energy left to take care of ourselves. So what can you do to help parents of children with special needs? Understand that we’re overwhelmed and near the edge. Bring us coffee and a muffin “just because.” Tell us we’re doing a great job. Be gentle and kind with us. We’re doing the best we can.

Alabama Splash Adventure’s New Season Brings Great New Things By Carol Muse Evans

Alabama Splash Adventure opened for the summer season on May 19 with the largest expansion in park history. What does this mean for park goers? There are six new amusement attractions, a new Pirate High Dive Show, big improvements and additions to the water park and many more enhancements to make this park more fun all summer. Alabama Splash combines rides and activities with the waterpark to make it a great attraction, all together for families, for one simple price. Whether you want to try a new ride or the historic Rampage Wooden Roller Coaster, there’s something for every member of the family. In the waterpark section, there’s a cool new area for younger children called Splash Island, complete with kids’ slides and a play area, and numerous lounge chairs and even shade for those seeking it. The waterpark is also the home to the new high dive show. New rides at Alabama Splash include the Scrambler, a nostalgic, yesteryear ride with tons of fun for today; Yo-Yo, a swing ride that spins and offers the experience of flight; The Rocking Tug, rocking and spinning motions in a “ship;” and Royal Express, a gentle train ride off the rails throughout the park.

There’s a newly-renovated Island Café Restaurant with a new Pepsi Oasis, where you still get FREE drinks, every day. There is more seating, more lockers in the water park, more shaded structures, more dining tables, more premium cabanas for rent, more food choices including gluten free items and the newly-renovated Pepsi Amphitheater. Also, you can now book parties/birthday parties at Alabama Splash, and remember those private cabanas are also available for rent throughout the season. And what’s so special about Alabama Splash? Owners Dan Koch and his mom Pat, “the general” have more than 60 years of experience in the amusement and waterpark industry. You’ll find Alabama Splash to be one of the cleanest, friendliest, safest parks around. When they purchased the park five years ago they did major restoration to the park, the roller coaster and brought free parking, free unlimited Pepsi drinks, free sunscreen and free inner tubes and even free Wi-Fi to the park. As a result, the honors have been streaming in. In 2017, it was chosen as one of the top five friendliest parks in the world by readers of Amusement Today. It was named one of the best theme park values in the USA by MSN News. And, the Rampage Roller Coasters ranked one of the top 25 wooden coasters in the world. “We build upon these honors. We are definitely moving in the right direction. Thank you guests, team members and the great state of Alabama,” Dan Koch says. This season, guests will see that season pricing has been lowered, and if you buy online or bring a Pepsi product, you can receive $5 off or $10 bonus cash. In addition, there is a “sunshine” guarantee at Alabama Splash. While they cannot guarantee every day will be sunny when you visit, if the rides and slides are closed one hour or more due to lightning on your visit, you’ll be able to come another day! For more information about the season, hours, ticket pricing and more, visit www.alabamasplash.com. Or call 205-481-4750, and visit them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. 30 | birminghamparent | june 2018

Celebrating Dads: 10 Things We Didn’t Know about Fatherhood By Pam Molnar

We’ve all seen the professional athlete, who after spending thousands of hours of practice as a kid in the backyard with his dad, say “Hi Mom!” to the camera while being interviewed on TV. For years, our fathers have taken a backseat to their female partners, giving her the special recognition in place of his own. It wasn’t until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day – a full 50 years after mothers received such a recognition. It took another six years before President Richard Nixon signed it into permanent law. This year, we will celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 18. But what do we really know about these men in the shadows? While most of us think very highly of our own fathers, you might be surprised to know how great fathers are in general:

1.

There are an estimated 70.1 million fathers in the United States, according to the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse. The average age of a first-time father is 27.4. First time mothers, in comparison, are three years younger.

2.

A father’s traditional role as the main breadwinner has changed drastically since 1970. Then, about half of the families relied on income from the father only. Today, that number has been reduced to 25 percent of households where the father is the only income and 66 percent of families have dual income earners.

3.

Speaking of bringing home the bacon, an estimated 52 percent of fathers are the primary grocery shopper in the family – up 10 percent since 1995. Studies show 75 percent of dads think they are more involved with their children than their fathers were. Today 14 percent of men get some paid paternity leave. Yes, that is still a low number, but paternity leave was unheard of just a generation ago.

4.

In 2010, stay-at-home fathers reached the all-time high of 2.2 million men. While high unemployment rates contributed to this number, 21 percent of men reported that they are home primarily as caregivers. This number has increased from just 5 percent of stay-athome fathers in 1989, according to a study by Pew Research.

5.

It is estimated that 8 percent of children in the United States live in households headed by single fathers. That number is up from just 1 percent in 1960. Reportedly, single fathers have higher incomes, making them less likely than single mothers to live at or below the poverty level. According to a study on custodial parents, custodial fathers receive $2 billion in child support as compared to $19.5 billion received by custodial mothers.

6.

We all know that fathers determine the sex of their offspring by either passing on an X or Y chromosome. A Newcastle University study in 2008 shows that men inherit the tendency to have sons or daughters from their parents. Those with many brothers are more likely to have sons and those with several sisters are more likely to have daughters. 34 | birminghamparent | june 2018

FATHER’S DAY IS SUNDAY, JUNE 17!

7.

While not recognized as a real syndrome by some medical professionals, Couvade Syndrome is experienced by a few men during their partner’s pregnancy. These reported sympathetic pregnancy symptoms include weight gain, morning sickness and altered hormone levels. Extreme cases include labor pains and postpartum depression.

8.

We can find some pretty amazing fathers in nature, too. Male seahorses get pregnant when their female counterpart deposits her eggs into his brood. The average seahorse has 100-200 babies. Hardhead catfish males carry their fertilized eggs in their mouth for 60 days, which keeps them from taking in any nourishment for two months. Male emperor penguins keep their eggs balanced on their feet and covered by their belly in order to protect them from the artic temperatures. They cannot hunt for food for 60-100 days until the eggs hatch and the females return.

9.

It is reported that in 2014, $12.5 billion was spent on Father’s Day. The average person spends $114 on their dad. While 52 percent of us are shopping for our fathers and stepfathers, 28 percent buy for their husbands, 9 percent for their sons and 4 percent for their grandfathers. The most popular gifts are cards, taking dad on a special outing, clothes and gift cards.

10.

Father’s Day is now celebrated by several countries around the world. Many countries like our neighbor, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Argentina and the Netherlands have followed the United States’ tradition of celebrating on the third Sunday in June. Portugal, Belgium and Spain celebrate their fathers on St. Joseph’s Day (March 19), while Australia, New Zealand and Sweden have chosen the first Sunday in September. Regardless of the day, we all want to give our fathers the recognition they deserve.

Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. She is in constant awe of the father that raised her and the father who is helping her to raise their children.

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a joint research project between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Alabama Department of Public Health. Its purpose is to determine why some babies are born healthy and others are not in order to aid in the development and assessment of programs designed to identify high-risk pregnancies and reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes. New mothers are randomly chosen from the state birth registry to participate in PRAMS. Surveys may be returned by mail or completed over the phone. Let your voice be heard!

“Happy to be part of this survey.”

“Thank you for checking on us!”

Georgia’s Barnsley Resort IS A HAVEN FOR FAMILY FUN By Becky J. Beall

Barnsley Resort has roots dating back two centuries to a time when a young man fancied to build a dream castle for his beloved bride. That young man was Godfrey Barnsley and today, the resort offers more than he would have ever thought possible. A short 2½-hour drive from Birmingham, Barnsley Resort is located on 3,000 sprawling acres in Adairsville. This grand Southern estate offers a unique setting in north Georgia with a strong outdoor appeal as well as fabulous culinary creations, cottages, a new boutique inn, a spa and so much more! Perfect for couples looking to unplug and reconnect, Barnsley Resort also has all the makings of the perfect family getaway. Accommodations Countryside cottages in a variety of sizes and floor plans line the walkways of the village offering 90 rooms and suites. Each one is fully 36 | birminghamparent | june 2018

appointed with thoughtful amenities, spacious rooms and easy access to resort features. Just steps from the cottages, there are fire pits for s’mores (ingredients available inside the inn lobby), lawn games, restaurants, gift shops, a swimming pool and so much more! The newest lodging option is the threestory Inn at Barnsley Resort, designed to complement the English-inspired village and provide additional room choices for guests. With 55 spacious rooms and suites, the Inn offers luxury accommodations with upscale amenities, gorgeous views and innovative touches. The Inn itself has a stately presence with a grand staircase and beautiful exposed beams. The lobby invites guests with a lovely fireplace, hardwood floors and swanky furnishings. The craftsmanship is outstanding in this place, making everyone feel so incredibly welcome.

Resort Features Vacationers at Barnsley Resort have so many niceties at their disposal. From restaurants to activities to meeting space and more, there’s always something to do! Restaurants include Woodlands Grill, Rice House and the Beer Garden. All have an individual ambiance that adds to the culinary experience of exceptional food and service. The Fitness Center allows folks to stay on track with their health and fitness routine while away from home. Other folks find that walking or hiking daily on the property is good exercise within itself. Guests can walk down to the Barnsley Barnyard area and visit the pigs, goats, chickens and other animals – kids LOVE this area! One of the most exciting ways to see the property is on horseback. Book a guided wilderness ride, a resort ride or let the kiddos participate in horse painting, which is totally

safe (it feels like a massage to the horse). This is a wonderful way for children to learn more about these four-legged friends, all the while gaining confidence to ride. Take home boutique-style gifts and clothing from the gift shop, and find unique gems, souvenirs and snacks at the Outpost General Store. Outpost is also the place to arrange trips to shoot sporting clays or tour SpringBank Plantation, a sister location that offers 1,800 acres for wing shooting (quail, pheasant or duck) along with a clubhouse. Other fantastic amenities include The Spa at Barnsley Resort, where pampering is paramount; the pool with an amazing view of the championship 18-hole golf course; and golf lessons along with the course itself. Be sure and carve out some time to meander through the Manor House Ruins – the place where it all began – and the relaxing gardens. Rent a bike and go exploring or spend time on the water in various activities like fly fishing for more outdoor fun!

Best Time to Visit Summertime is obviously perfect for outdoor activities, but don’t ignore the shoulder seasons of spring and fall when Georgia temperatures are slightly cooler than summer. Keep in mind, this resort is perfectly equipped for couples, families or gal pal trips no matter what the season. If you need a family getaway not too far from home, then now is the best time to visit. For more information on Barnsley Resort, please visit the website at https://www.barnsleyresort.com/ and be sure to check the PACKAGES AND OFFERS tab.

ALL PHOTOS COURTESY THE HENDERSON

FAMILIES Can Enjoy a Relaxing Beach Getaway at the Henderson By Lori C. Pruitt

The Henderson, a Salamander® Beach & Spa Resort in Destin is everything you want in a beach vacation – a luxurious, comfortable place to stay with gorgeous views, a beautiful private white sand beach, delicious food, a first-class spa and lots of things to do. Touted as one of the finest luxury resorts to open along Florida’s Gulf Coast in a generation, it is next to 200 acres of beautiful preserve and just steps from the Gulf’s beautiful beaches. In fact, it’s a great destination for not only couples, but friend getaways and families, too. My husband and I went for the weekend, and because of everything that is offered, did not have to leave the resort at all. The Henderson is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, so you don’t have the endless traffic passing up and down the road. It has only been open for a couple of years, but the seasoned, friendly and helpful staff make you feel at home. 38 | birminghamparent | june 2018

The resort itself is simply beautiful. It is designed like traditional coastal architecture with shingles and steep gable rooflines. The resort has 170 spacious, luxury guest rooms and eight guest suites. There are 12 sets of connecting rooms, and six dog-friendly rooms (first-come, first-serve). There are two pools – a heated pool for guests age 18-up and a family pool with a lazy river and a splash pad; and a full schedule of several family-friendly recreational programs and activities. The grounds are spectacular and are carefully tended. A nice touch is the 465 pieces of original artwork by 13 local artists displayed throughout the hotel. Also, the Henderson’s newest family-friendly accommodation that opened earlier this year, The Lofts, offers 36 one and two-bedroom condos, also on the grounds. Guests enjoy all the amenities of the resort. Speaking of amenities, the daily complimentary perks are great. Those include private beach access, access to beach snacks and

beverage service just steps away from the beach, on-demand transportation to nearby Destin events and activities such as the Silver Sands Premium Outlet, Destin Harbor and Henderson Beach State Park, a daily family pass to the park, and a choice of two hours each day of a beach bike (one per room; additional bikes for a fee) or a fitness class. The fitness center itself is available for guests. There are traditional outdoor games for families on the immaculately maintained grounds, including badminton; and special event nights as well. You can rent a beach cabana for the day, which comes with water, fresh fruit and towels, and rent equipment for paddle boarding, kayaks and kick boards on the beach. You also can rent wooden chairs and umbrellas, along with towels. If you want to leave the resort for other activities, The Henderson is a short distance from all the fun of Destin’s attractions and nightlife. The resort has an activities program

Other restaurants on site include the Sea Level Poolside Bar and Grill, Sprinkles, an ice cream shop; and the Beach Club Grill, located on the beachside, so it is very easy to find great food wherever you are on the property. PO ET RY PARTY

road trip

The joyous month June! Flowers in full bloom! Jump and Shout! School is Out! Vacation time is here! ROAD TRIP!

I LIKE ROADS! I like roads that set me free, Winding roads and wild roads As far as I can see. I like roads that weave and trail, Backwoods roads, dirt black roads Where daydreams rise and sail. I like roads lined with trees, Shadow roads, creekside roads, Roads with lots of leaves. I like roads out in the sun, Highway roads, byway roads, Roads where rivers run. I like roads along the shore, Country roads, mountain roads, City roads and more. I like roads that never end, Roads that linger, Roads that bend. I like roads that let me roam. I like roads that Take me home. —©Charles Ghigna
