PAR E N TI N G
Parenting with Dr. Friedman
Q:
My sister was born with fetal alcohol syndrome and has learning disabilities along
with emotional issues. My parents suffer immense guilt and have placed her needs before anyone else’s in the family. My sister has learned to manipulate this situation. I have been exposed to years of her faking, passing out in public places and other miscellaneous drama. I have been exposed to so much of this bad behavior for so many years that I want nothing to do with her. I constantly receive phone calls and email from my sister and it is driving me nuts. She calls several times a day with demands, questions or irrelevant information. She lets the phone ring and ring until I answer, or keep calling back until I do. She will leave the same lengthy voice mail on my work and home phone (with irrelevant repetitive information). I am very short with her and anyone normal would know that I am not interested in these communications. The general consensus with my friends and family on my setting boundaries with my sister is, “Why bother? She is not going to follow them. You just need to learn to be more patient.” I cannot control what she does, but I can control how I react to it. I have had enough. I need your help in learning to establish some boundaries with my learning disabled sister.
Even though it may not feel this way, you really do have insight into and control over the situation. You just seem to need some support in acting on what you already know and believe. You are absolutely right when you say that you cannot control what she does, but you can control how you react to it. I suspect that it is very hard for you when your parents act generously with her while expecting you to earn your own way. I would guess that they have two completely different sets of expectations for you and for your sister. If you can change the way you think about and react to this, you might feel less incensed. When your parents are less helpful to you than they are to your sister, you might see this as their way of admiring your skills and expressing confidence in your competence and ability to be independent. They help your sister because they think she is defective and unable. Would you want them to think of and treat you this way? As far as your sister is concerned, you do not have to interact with her at all unless you are living in the same house. Do not feel guilty at removing yourself from her presence. Her behavior leads to this. You might be the only one in the family who is able to set limits for her. Your parents appear to be enablers. Parents do not do their child a favor when they accept and reinforce
Braces with a mom’s touch
behaviors that are offensive to others outside the home. It leads to social rejection. Your sister’s disability does not cause her rudeness. The family members who reinforce negative behavior do. There are many lovely, pleasant disabled people. Don’t reinforce her telephone persistence by answering. That is what caller ID and blocking is for. Set up a weekly time for her to call you and stick to it. Remove the block only at the designated time. You are only a victim of her aggressive and asocial behavior if you let yourself be. It is a choice you can make.

Alabama Splash Adventure Introduces New Water Attraction for 2018 After recently being named one of the five friendliest parks in the world, Alabama Splash Adventure is pleased to announce the addition of a new kids slide complex and interactive play structure for the 2018 season. The new attraction will debut in May 2018 and will feature five colorful slides, each offering a unique experience. While some slides offer gentle, yet exciting hills, others offer twists and turns. The slides all empty into shallow water ensuring a safe experience for riders. The interactive play structure will offer various water features that will spray in all directions and provide a fun place for kids to cool off. The play area will feature “zero-depth” water to maximize the safety of guests. “Our guests have been requesting a new water attraction and we are listening to our guests,” says Dan Koch, president of Alabama Splash Adventure. “This new attraction will be perfect for the children and families that visit Alabama Splash Adventure, and will help us increase our waterpark capacity as we continue to expand.” In addition, the park will add additional seating and new cabanas around the attraction so guests can stay cool. The slides are being developed by Proslide Technology Inc. and the play area is being developed by Vortex Aquatic Structures, both industry leading water amusement manufacturers. The park will hold a naming contest for the new attraction, and the winning entry will receive four complimentary season passes for the 2018 season. Go to www.AlabamaSplash.com to enter! SHERIFF’S CORNER: Practice Situational Awareness
By Sheriff Mike Hale
As we enter into the holiday season, I would remind everyone that thieves are actively looking for ways to separate you from your valuables. Here are some suggestions to help you stay safe and reduce the change of theft. When possible, shop with a friend. There is safety in numbers. Try to park in lighted areas and never leave packages in plain sight. Lock your gifts in the trunk of your car. When exiting the place you are shopping, be aware of your surroundings. Stop and take a quick scan of the area and know where your car is parked. Keep your car keys in your hand as you return to your vehicle. Get into your car as quickly as possible and lock the doors. Our goal at the Sheriff’s Office is to keep you safe and protect your property. If you see anything suspicious, call 205-325-1450 immediately. Have a safe holiday and visit our web site at www.jeffcosheriff.net or see us on Facebook for more information.

OPENING JANUARY 2018
Pilot Educational Program Receives a Grant to Expand Thousands of young children in two Birmingham communities are getting a boost in education through the successful “Vocabby’s World” arts and science-based program. The PNC Foundation recently awarded a $200,000 grant to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center and McWane Science Center to extend a pilot program for preschool children in the Woodlawn and Norwood communities. Now beginning its third year, “Vocabby’s World” helps preschoolers grow language skills by introducing new words each month, through science projects with McWane and through visual arts and movement with the Alys Stephens Center. “When PNC launched this experiment two years ago, we tapped into UAB and McWane’s knowledge and outreach experience to help bring quality early learning to life for children in our underserved communities,” says Brian Bucher, PNC regional president, Alabama. “With ‘Vocabby’s World,’ we’re now successfully engaging thousands of young students and empowering them to build critical skills that will help them in school and life.” In year three, focus will also be on expanding the program through curriculum development that can be implemented in new communities. A new video series in development featuring the program’s mascot, Vocabby, will give families an opportunity to learn new vocabulary lessons at home or on the go. In 2014, the PNC Foundation awarded an initial $500,000 grant to the two partners to start the pilot vocabulary initiative now known as Vocabby’s World. Birmingham is one of 10 cities PNC selected from across the nation as part of the $10 million pilot, which engages community organizations to build young children’s vocabularies.

Get Curious with Curious George at the Gulf Coast Exploreum! The Gulf Coast Exploreum in Mobile has a new exhibit! Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! highlights the insatiable curiosity of Curious George, the little monkey who has captured the imagination and hearts of millions of children and adults for 65 years. Based on the familiar characters in H.A. and Margret Rey’s classic stories, and inspired by the animated television series on PBS KIDS, the exhibit inspires young children’s natural curiosity as they explore early science, math and engineering through hands-on interactive play. This immersive exhibit environment takes place in the neighborhood where Curious George lives with his friend The Man with the Yellow Hat. Visitors can operate wheels to help George climb a building, sort and weigh fruits and vegetables at the produce stand, use science skills to putt a hole of mini golf, climb the rocket from George’s space adventure, build a whirligig in the country, and visit the museum within the museum.
The American Collegiate Testing (ACT) organization of Iowa City, IA, has again selected GradePower Learning to present to the more than 1,200 teachers and administrators from across Alabama who will attend the ACT State Organization Annual Conference. The conference will be hosted by the University of Alabama at the Bryant Conference Center on December 7. Recent data shows that student achievement in Alabama, as measured by the ACT, remains near the bottom of national rankings and is not improving. Further, less than 34 percent of kids in grades 3-12 are performing at or above their current grade level in math and reading. Paradoxically, nearly all parents surveyed (90 percent) believe their kids are performing at or above grade level. GradePower’s presentation is titled, “Cultivating ‘Straight A’s’: Accountability, adaptability, agility, active mindedness and achievement.” GradePower will share its approach to integrating cognitive development strategies into academic skill instruction.

N.E. Miles Jewish Day School Students Participate in StudentRun Library Pilot Program N.E. Miles Jewish Day School fifth graders embarked on a unique leadership journey. The students are librarians in a student-run school library pilot program. This group was selected to take on this important responsibility because of their leadership and teamwork skills (and, of course, their love for books!) Students have been charged with running and growing the school library throughout the year. Students hosted a “Library Launch” celebration in September, decorating the library with book displays and vocabulary words, and developing an incentive system. During the launch, students delivered a speech confidently to the entire school. Then each fifth grader gave a class a tour of the library, pointing out key features like the book return and circulation desk. Since September, students have been setting goals, collecting, analyzing, and graphing data, and working weekly shifts as librarians. Students also have been reading books published in the last year so they can recommend new additions for the library. Students wrote persuasive pieces to decide how to allocate the monthly library budget. Students also are learning about community resources as part of this leadership program. Students met with a local librarian from Avondale Library and visited Emmet O’Neal Library to take “field notes” about library services and programming.

Her goal was to educate her local community about this issue by sewing “sensory mats” for local seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s. These mats have been shown to lift spirits, relieve caregivers, and stimulate the senses and memory, as well as exercising the fingers and hands. “Several members of my family have been afflicted with Alzheimer’s or dementia, so helping those with these diseases has always been something I’ve been drawn to do,” Reynolds says. “My mother always talked about how her grandmother loved to sit and fold washcloths for hours on end after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, so I immediately thought of her, and how sensory mats could help seniors, as well.” Reynolds raised awareness by creating a Facebook page, pamphlets, and a tutorial on making the sensory mats. She also hosted a volunteer day to teach others how to sew sensory mats and about the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s. Volunteers created 61 mats in one afternoon. For the sustainability portion of the Gold Award, Reynolds passed the project along to a local crafting group, who has agreed to help get local Girl Scouts troops involved. “By earning the Girl Scout Gold Award,” said Karen Peterlin, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama, “Reynolds has become a community leader. Her accomplishments reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart.”

great gift ideas for
YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER By Bethany Hunley
Raise your hand if you have ever gifted a teacher with an apple or a Christmas mug saying something along the lines of “Number 1 Teacher.” You raised your hand, didn’t you? As a society that is constantly evolving and changing, why have our holiday gifts for teachers remained so stagnant for so long? Not that apples and being called “The World’s Best Teacher” aren’t appreciated, but why not let our gift buying for teachers evolve too? As a mother of two with a certification in Elementary Education (and who now spends most of her time in a high school), I am constantly surrounded by teachers. I have spent the last several weeks asking teachers from each grade level to list some of the best Christmas gifts they have ever received from their students. With this insider information in hand, here are some of the gifts they suggested to me. In a world filled with Pinterest, the internet is brimming with ideas on how to personalize everything. “Personalizing” something is now synonymous with sticking your monogram on everything from hair bows to mail boxes. While teachers most likely would not appreciate a monogrammed hair bow for a Christmas gift, they would appreciate and be able to effectively use personalized items. Whether you choose to simply purchase a set of vinyl stickers of either a teacher’s name or monogram or would rather buy a specific personalized item (stapler, pencil holder, door hanger, file holder, etc.), teachers can always appreciate having a clear way to determine what is theirs and what belongs to another teacher or student. One of the most commonly named gifts from teachers is an insulated tumbler. Perfect for keeping cold beverages cold and hot beverages hot, these insulated tumblers are the perfect gift for someone who needs to stay caffeinated but has little access to a kitchen area with ice or a microwave. As another plus, vinyl stickers can be added to the outside of these tumblers with playful designs or even the teacher’s monogram. 20 | birminghamparent | december 2017
Jason Johnsey, a teacher at Helena High School, says, “I really appreciate gift cards, because they provide opportunities to do things that I enjoy while I’m away from the classroom without spending extra money so close to Christmas.”
The most popular Christmas gift mentioned among both elementary and secondary teachers is gift cards. Some people view gift cards as the lazy person’s gift. While that may be true in some cases, gifting teachers with gift cards actually makes a good deal of sense. What better way to show a teacher appreciation than providing them with a way to spend their time while they are away from the classroom and living their day-to-day life? “I really appreciate gift cards, because they provide opportunities to do things that I enjoy while I’m away from the classroom without spending extra money so close to Christmas,”
says Jason Johnsey, a teacher at Helena High School. Perhaps the teacher you are buying for loves coffee? A Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts gift card would be a gift they are sure to enjoy. You don’t get the impression that your child’s teacher has the chance to get out much? A gift card to a nice restaurant would be a thoughtful gift that they are sure to appreciate. If you are more practical in your thinking and would like to give classroom related Christmas gifts, a gift card to Amazon would be the perfect way to add to your child’s classroom, while also saving the teacher some
of their own money. Gift cards to local arts and crafts and book stores would also benefit both the classroom and the teacher’s personal finances. Particularly among elementary teachers, another favorite Christmas gift is handmade items. Sweet cards and pictures that your little one took the time to make themselves are keepsakes that all teachers cherish. Lindsey Rigdon, a teacher at Helena High School, says, “I love to keep and reread sweet notes from my students and their parents. They are the perfect pick-me-up when I am having a rough day.” Perhaps more geared towards female teachers than male teachers, scented candles, body lotions and hand sanitizers were also mentioned. These are also the perfect gifts for thrifty buyers, as stores like Bath and Body Works and Yankee Candle typically offer holiday deals on their products when bought in
bulk. While a male teacher may not appreciate gingerbread scented hand lotion, candles now come in a variety of more masculine scents. Sweet treats are a timeless favorite among teachers. Fresh baked breads, decadent brownies, and succulent cookies are almost always going to be a hit. Do not think that you have to bake these yourselves. While the added effort is sure to be appreciated, save yourself some time and grab these treats while at the grocery store. They will be eaten and enjoyed just the same. As a precaution, you may want to double check on any food allergies or dietary restrictions before purchasing anything. One of the biggest tips regarding purchasing teacher Christmas gifts is to ask your child what their teacher likes. Perhaps they have mentioned a favorite restaurant, store, hobby, or sports team to their students during class. Ask your child to look around their classroom and see if there are any objects that indicate something that their teacher enjoys. This is one of the best ways to gather ideas for the perfect gift for your child’s teacher this holiday season. If you are an overachiever and wish to spread a little more holiday cheer around your child’s school, be sure to remember the other faculty members who interact with your child each day. These include but are not limited to art teachers, music teachers, receptionists, nurses, cafeteria staff, custodians and principals. If your child is involved in a sport or after-school activity, be sure to remember their coach or activity’s sponsor when doing your holiday shopping as well.
Perfect for keeping cold beverages cold and hot beverages hot, these insulated tumblers are the perfect gift for someone who needs to stay caffeinated but has little access to a kitchen area with ice or a microwave.

challenges of calling kids in from the rain, pulling them away from the museum fountain, and convincing them it’s time to get out of the pool. From bathtubs and beaches to soapy sinks and mud puddles, the tactile exploration of water draws on kids’ imaginations like the pull of the tides. The following titles celebrate the joys of soggy moments, wet weather and the wonders of water through the eyes of children.
Worm Weather
By Jean Taft, Illustrated by Matt Hunt (Grossett & Dunlap / Penguin Random House)
Rain
Closer to the ground than most adults, our observant children are often the ones who draw our eyes back to the earth when they first spy worms emerging from the ground after a soaking rain. Using very simple pre-reader words, this title follows a boy and girl as they experience a soggy day from its drizzly beginnings, through the deluge, to the tapering close of a rainstorm. Equipped with boots and ponchos, the young pair fearlessly embrace and explore the precipitation. Throughout the watery journey, worms are peeking out from the soil at the kids’ feet. Echoing the limited viewing of the emerging worms, the adults are likewise viewed only in part as their hands reach out to rush kids out of the rain or to pull them from puddles. When the rain ends and the worms retreat, the reader’s view expands to encompass a wider vision of a refreshed world (with friends underground and waiting for the next Worm Weather).
By Sam Usher (Templar / Candlewick) Waking up to a rainstorm instead of a rising sun puts a young boy’s outside plans on hold. While he insists he likes to play in the rain, his Granddad counsels waiting until the worst precipitation has passed. Trapped inside and impatient to venture out, the boy extols the various watery marvels that he’d like to encounter. Subtle references to underwater beasts, canals and watercraft abound indoors while the boy and his Granddad wait out the deluge. As the rain ends and the duo prepare to explore its remnants, the boy’s earlier imaginings of adventure begin to emerge in watery reflections. Celebrating both the comfort of a stormy day indoors, as well as the pleasure of emerging later into a freshly washed world, Rain is perfect for rainy day reading. 26 | birminghamparent | december 2017
Wet
By Carey Sookocheff (Godwin Books / Henry Holt & Co.) Making time to really think about all the moments he gets wet every day, a young boy takes a deeper dive into the waters that touch his daily life. With brief language, he notes his wet footprints on the deck of a pool. He recognizes the variety of ways he enters the water, sometimes inch-by-inch, other times with an exuberant cannonball. His tears are wet, as is his father’s shoulder as they embrace. From the bottom of the playground slide to his dog’s tongue, the boy’s keen observations highlight all the ways he can experience the watery parts of his day. Whether it flows as a trickle or a splash, Wet is a peaceful paean to the water that wends through our lives.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infections By Joseph Jolly, MD It’s hard enough for a parent to see their child sick in any way, but when the non-stop coughing, constant sneezing and incessant runny nose of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, strike, an adult can feel overwhelmed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RSV is the most common cause of pneumonia and bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) in children under 12 months of age in the United States. Almost all children will have had an RSV infection by the time they turn two, and in most cases the virus causes only minor cold-like symptoms. But some children, and even a few adults, may develop more severe infections that require hospitalization. RSV is spread through infectious respiratory secretions, such as droplets from coughing or sneezing that are inhaled or passed to others through direct contact. The virus also can live for hours on objects such as toys and door handles. This spread of infection can be reduced by washing hands frequently, avoiding exposure to others who are sick, keeping things clean, not sharing drinking glasses or eating utensils with others, not smoking around infants, and washing toys regularly. The peak RSV season starts in the fall and ends in the spring, or around November through April. Signs of RSV usually appear about four to six days after being exposed to the virus. Adults and healthy, older children typically have symptoms that mimic the common cold, starting with a runny nose and decrease in appetite. Coughing, sneezing and a low-grade fever may then develop one to three days later. The only signs of RSV in very young infants could be irritability, decreased activity, and problems with breathing. Full recovery from the virus takes about one to two weeks. Severe cases of RSV can lead to lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Hospitalization may be necessary for infants who require intravenous fluids, supplemental oxygen, suctioning of mucus from the airways, or a breathing machine to ease breathing. Antibiotics may be administered for bacterial complications, such as a middle ear infection or bacterial pneumonia, but are ineffective against the virus itself.
28 | birminghamparent | december 2017
Bronchiolitis, as a result of RSV infection, is caused by inflammation and congestion of the small airways (bronchioles) of the lungs. This can manifest as wheezing, rapid breathing, and use of accessory muscles to assist breathing, resulting in pulling-in of the rib cage an abdomen. Babies can tire quickly from this extra effort and may require urgent medical attention. Some high risk children, such as babies born extremely prematurely, or with underlying heart or lung disease, may need to receive monthly injections of RSV immune globulin during the height of the season. This is protective and can help these children fight off the infection, but it is not universally recommended for everyone. Your pediatrician will know if your child is eligible. People at increased risk for developing severe cases of RSV include: • Infants under six months old • Babies less than one year old who were born prematurely or have congenital heart or lung disease • Children with weakened immune systems due to a medical condition or treatment • Adults 65 and older, and those with congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or immunodeficiency such as HIV/AIDS There is no specific treatment or vaccine for RSV. However, symptoms can be relieved by creating moist air to breathe, sitting in an upright position, drinking fluids, avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke, and using saline nasal drops or over-thecounter pain relievers to reduce fever and relieve a sore throat. For more information about RSV, talk with your doctor.

4 Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin During Your Workouts By Dr. Corey Hartman
Paying attention to your skin during a workout is important but often goes overlooked. Truth is, the gym is a place crawling with moisture and warm, wet places for bacteria to breed. If you don’t take care of your skin immediately after working out, you could be prone to acne, staph infection, and other unwanted skin problems. Here are a few ways you can ensure your skin looks just as good as your body feels after a good exercise session. 1. Take off makeup and tie hair back before working out Makeup + sweat on your face can actually cause breakouts. This is due to excess oil building up in your pores. Your skin breathes naturally, but makeup can block its ability to do so. Try bringing wet wipes or cleansing towelettes for your face to clean it before your workout. Your
hair can also accumulate a lot of grease, so do your skin a favor by pulling it away from your face during your workout. • Neutrogena® Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes 2. Wipe off exercise equipment Make sure you bring a small towel to place over the machines before using them. The bacteria from other users can make its way from the machines onto your skin and cause a host of skin issues. It’s also a good idea to have antibacterial wipes on hand to help keep yourself free from contact with other people’s sweat and grime. • Fullbore Fitness Towel 3. Dry off and wash your face immediately following your workout As soon as you finish working out, change out of your sweaty clothes and wash your face, hands, arms, and other exposed areas before heading home. Acne can start to form if you let bacteria build up in your pores. To avoid excess sweating,
try dri-fit or moisture-wicking clothing. These are specifically made to wick moisture away from the body, while being light and airy. They also help to protect against chafing and sores due to sweaty material rubbing your skin. • Skin Wellness Clarifying Pads are an easy, on the go solution to cleanse. 4. Stay moisturized In your effort to maintain healthy skin, don’t forget to keep your skin moisturized postworkout. Try a natural substance such as virgin coconut oil, applied all over your body after a bath. This will ensure your skin locks in necessary moisture while also staying radiant. • SkinCeuticals Daily Moisture Complete wellness ultimately begins on the inside. Remembering the above tips as you exercise will ensure that your skin is as clean as possible, every day.

Each child in attendance received a bandana and cowboy hat (pink for girls and black for boys). Floating above the ground were various barnyard animal balloons that managed to walk (yes, walk) around the floor of the pavilion. Several of these walking barnyard animals were also taken home as party favors, as they were certainly a hit among the children. As the party began, the crew from Wishes & Wonders quietly snuck away, and as the party began to end, they snuck back in to begin take down. It was all perfect. When providing services of this caliber, a good bit of time can be required for set up. Be sure to keep this in mind when choosing a venue, as set up and take down can take upwards of two hours. Ask plenty of questions of all involved. There’s a great deal of planning that goes on between booking and the actual party. Everyone who was in attendance at the party, as well as everyone who has since seen photos of the décor, has been amazed at the
PARTY PLANNING MAKES
Turning Two a Barnyard Blast By Bethany Adams Hunley As I began planning for my twin daughters’ second birthday, I became afraid of another hilarious and relatable “Pinterest Fail.” We’ve all seen them on social media, and I didn’t want our party to be one. So I found a venue and turned the planning over to a local party planning service, Wishes & Wonders, to create my vision of a pretty, pink barnyard-themed birthday celebration. Already familiar with some of their work, I knew that I wouldn’t be disappointed. What I didn’t realize is that the party they were planning for my daughters would far exceed any of my highest expectations. Wishes and Wonders consists of five women with full-time careers ranging from art teacher to production manager and offers top-notch services from highly qualified individuals who all extend their personal expertise to provide the best possible experience for their customers. While party planning is not their sole profession, Wishes & Wonders dedicates as much time as needed, and then some, to presenting an unbelievable finished product. Our chosen venue was Griffin Farms in Helena, Alabama. Family owned and operated, this farm extends party packages of its own, so I knew that they would already have the framework laid on which to create our pink barnyard theme. The morning of my girls’ birthday party, I was not sure what to expect. I knew that it would be over-the-top and beautiful, but there was still a small part of my mind that struggled with giving control over to others. Upon arrival at the venue, the women from Wishes & Wonders, along with a crew of about 10 others, were already working to transform the wooden pavilion into the cutest pink barnyard I could have ever imagined. Pink, white and cow print balloons created an enormous archway through the party space. Smaller balloons, in coordinating colors, were manipulated to create a precious balloon flower arrangement for each table. As if this added touch wasn’t enough, they also made sure that each balloon flower arrangement had a different color pattern. The food tables (I supplied the food) were transformed with pink tulle and burlap runners. There was an assortment of Western and rustic styled serving dishes and doodads decorating these tables as well. Popcorn was placed into plastic containers that resembled corn on the cob, and they even brought in a hot pink wheel barrow filled with straw. Oh, and did I mention the enormous and absolutely adorable barnyard doors that they custom painted with my shade of pink as the backdrop for this already precious scene? 32 | birminghamparent | december 2017
attention to detail and sheer talent that was on display. As a Type-A perfectionist, things do not typically exceed my expectations. The experience I had working with Wishes & Wonders and the final product they produced for my daughters exceeded every expectation and hope I could have imagined. Wishes & Wonders offers party packages ranging from $650 to $1,500 and can create the party of your dreams using a variety of unique services. Whether you desire water rides, ferris wheel, trackless train or carousel, Wishes & Wonders can make it happen. Dunwoody
DELIVERS FAMILY FUN By Carol Muse Evans
Dunwoody is a little bit new, a little bit old, a little bit metropolitan and a little bit family-focused. Photos courtesy of Dunwoody CVB
Chances are you may not even know where Dunwoody is, but you may have seen a sign or two when traveling through Atlanta. It’s time you followed the signs, and exit to Dunwoody, a place that really delivers family fun. After a recent trip to Dunwoody, Georgia, I am certain it should become a family destination. Whether you plan it along with a trip to see the sites in Atlanta (Dunwoody is a suburb) or as a standalone, Dunwoody offers fun for the whole family in some unique ways. Located just minutes north of Atlanta, Dunwoody is a little bit new, a little bit old, a little bit metropolitan and a little bit family-focused. You may feel like you are in a small town, though you are right outside one of the largest cities in the south. Love to shop? Dunwoody is home to the second largest mall in the Southeast, Perimeter Mall (www.perimetermall.com), so you won’t have trouble finding the store you want, or even the local specialty gift. Love to eat? Dunwoody is loaded with great chain restaurants, local flavors and the specialty eateries that families are going to love like Village Burger (www.villageburger.com), Vintage Pizzeria (www. vintagepizzeria.com/dunwoody), Da Vinci’s Donuts (www.davincisdonuts.com), Cafe Intermezzo (www.cafeintermezzo.com) and more. Love the outdoors? Dunwoody has it, from the Dunwoody Nature Center (www.dunwoodynature.com) where you can take a self-guided tour, go hiking on the trails, visit Wildcat Creek and a playground in the woods. They’ve got a great Native American teepee, and be sure to at least try out the hammock garden. There’s a birds of prey show and even a petting zoo. If you’re a little more adventurous, try out Treetop Quest (www.treetopquest.com). This series of rope courses and zip line run has courses available for children as young as ages 4-6 with the Kiddie Quest course, several levels of obstacle difficulty for the beginner to the experienced zip liner, and those in between. This is a seasonal option, so check ahead and make a reservation. (continued on page 36) 34 | birminghamparent | december 2017

D E ST IN AT ION G U ID E Want to teach the kids about things that matter? Visit The Packaged Good in Dunwoody (www.thepackagedgood.org). “Empowering kids to do good while inspiring the next generation of giving,” The Packaged Good, a non-profit, is a storefront where kids and families can come in and put together personalized care packages for various packages and learn about “doing good.” Founder Sally Mundell created The Packaged Good after reflecting with her late husband at the end of his life about what matters. She wanted to do something in his memory that would live on, while instilling in their daughters how to help others. How about your creative side? For a taste of great local art, visit the Spruill Center (www.spruillarts.org), right in the center of all the Dunwoody action, where you’ll see their big, famous mural right outside, “Everything Will Be Ok.” The Gallery offers great exhibits with emerging artists, items for purchase and one of the best locally-made artist gift shops in metro Atlanta. But if you can, you must take an art class at the neighboring Spruill Center for the Arts. The Spruill Center offers more than 800 visual arts classes to more than 5,000 students of all ages and skill levels every year, and not every student is local. On my visit I did glass blowing, and it was such fun. There are classes in ceramics, decorative arts, drawing, jewelry, blacksmithing and even welding. Classes should be booked in advance, and be sure to pack closed-toe shoes. For more information, visit www.CVBDunwoody.com. Carol Muse Evans is publisher of Birmingham Parent, and visited Dunwoody for the first time in late July.

WHO LIKES POEMS ABOUT SNOW? YOU DO? ME TOO!
By Charles Ghigna
IT’S SNOW WONDER! It’s snow wonder that we cheer Snowflakes when they fall each year. It’s snow wonder snowmen grow From our garden made of snow. It’s snow wonder that we skate Across the lake a figure eight. It’s snow wonder that we slide Sleds across the countryside. It’s snow wonder that we play Winter games each snowy day. It’s snow wonder that we sleep Snuggled warm in blankets deep. — © Charles Ghigna
