editor’s note

Thanks for Picking Up the Guide 2017 This is our fifth annual issue of the yearly GUIDE, and it’s our largest yet! We hope it will be informative and helpful to you, the readers, as a “parent handbook” all year of things in the Birmingham area that may be important to you. In fact, you can pick it up in select locations all year. It replaces our regular January issue, and we printed more copies so that we may include it as a complement to our monthly issues throughout 2017. We hope you enjoy it. For the parent, grandparent or caregiver, this GUIDE offers easy access to all sorts of important names, numbers, addresses and website in our area all year. It’s in print and online at www. birminghamparent.com for you. Just like in years past, we’ve worked hard to double check times, addresses, phone numbers and websites until press time, but please remember any of these items are subject to change. In fact, we did not include library hours this year for that very reason, as some libraries have seasonal hours. Many thanks go to Associate Editor Lori Chandler Pruitt and Office Assistant Bethany Hunley for their hard work, fact-checking, and last-minute editing in what is a very tedious job. Please be sure to thank our sponsors and advertisers for this issue, and making it possible for us to bring it to you all year. And please email us and let us know what you’d like to see in the 2018 issue of the GUIDE at info@birminghamparent.com. This year also marks the beginning of Birmingham Parent’s 14th year in publication. Don’t miss our upcoming events, too: Camp Expo on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at the Riverchase Galleria; the Special Needs Expo on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Pelham Civic Complex and our Happy Healthy Kids Fair on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, at the Riverchase Galleria (tax-free shopping day in Alabama). Don’t forget our online birthday party giveaways monthly (http://birminghamparent.com/ content/birmingham-parents-birthday-kids.html), and follow us on Facebook (www.facebook. com/BirminghamParent) and Twitter (www.twitter.com/bhamparent) for great information, conversation and fantastic giveaways. And yes, people really do win! Thanks for reading, and have a terrific 2017! We are so grateful to all of you for another year in Birmingham. Carol Muse Evans, Publisher/Editor carol@birminghamparent.com

Meet Our Front Cover Sponsors ODYSSEY EARLY SCHOOLS Odyssey was created by educators who dreamed of opening an early learning center where children could be nurtured and taught by a highly trained and loving staff. That dream was realized when our Inverness school opened in 1995, and then again in 2001, with the opening of our second school in Trace Crossings. Odyssey’s goal is to create a life-long love of learning. We have developed our own age-appropriate curriculum, specifically designed

to introduce each age grouping to language, reading, math, science and more, so that your child will possess a strong foundation for Kindergarten and beyond. Additionally, we guarantee teachers with four-year education degrees in all preschool classrooms and offer exceptional child-to-teacher ratios. At our schools, you can watch your child’s entire day in live, streaming, HD video over the Internet, through an individual, secure connection linked directly to your child’s class-

room. We want our parents to know what happens during their child’s day, and Odyssey is the only Overthe-Mountain daycare to offer this service. Our team works tirelessly to earn its reputation as the best childcare option for Birmingham parents, and we invite you to visit today to witness for yourself what so many other families have known since 1995! Alabama’s 529

OFFERS SAVINGS OPPORTUNITIES AND EVEN SCHOLARSHIPS By Carol Muse Evans

You likely have already heard of Alabama’s CollegeCounts 529 College Savings Fund, a popular savings account that replaced the PACT fund in Alabama and offering more flexibility. In fact, the 529 College Savings Fund is also available in many other states. But did you know there are also scholarships available through the plan? CollegeCounts is offering more than $1 million in scholarships to eligible recipients pursing higher education in institutions in Alabama. The online application is available now through March 1, 2017, at www.CollegeCountsAlabama.com. It is designed to provide funding assistance to students who demonstrate a financial need and a desire to make a difference in their future, says Young Boozer, treasurer for the State of Alabama and board chair of College Counts. Eligible applicants must be high school seniors or first-time college freshmen in fall 2017 and have a minimum GPA of 2.75 with an ACT score of 26 or below, along with financial need. Range of scholarships per student is $2,000-$4,000. THE COLLEGECOUNTS ALABAMA 529 SAVINGS PLAN But the CollegeCounts 529 savings plan itself is NOT just limited to schools in Alabama. It can be used for in-state college, out-of-state college, public, private, technical schools, non-profit and for profit, Boozer explains. It can even be used at overseas schools in certain instances. 12 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2017

“This is the best way to save for a college education for a child or grandchild, bar none,” Boozer adds. “It offers terrific investment options and administration of the plan. “The 529 Plan offers a great structure and benefit for the student, what I like to call the three T’s,” Boozer says. “There are significant tax advantages associated with the account, both tax deductions and savings, it covers tuition, as well as fees, supplies, room and board, and timing can be from the day a child is born to offer the most value and a way to give gifts to the child throughout their growing up…the more you save, the less you may have to borrow.” Unlike its predecessor, the Alabama PACT plan, which closed in 2008, it allows much more flexibility, Boozer says. It is your account, and you own it. You don’t have to use it just in Alabama schools, and if a child decides not to go to school, it can even be used for a parent returning to school or getting an advanced degree, Boozer explains. Today, the CollegeCounts 529 Plan has more than $1.4 billion in investment savings and more than 81,000 accounts all over the country. While it is available in most states, Boozer says to look at your own state first, as you will likely receive the most tax deductions by purchasing in the state in which you live. For more information about College Counts, Alabama’s 529 Fund and how to open an account, visit www.CollegeCounts529.com. Carol Muse Evans is publisher of Birmingham parent.

Meet Our Back Cover Sponsors PEDIATRICS NEPHROLOGY OF ALABAMA The doctors and staff of Pediatric Nephrology of Alabama seek to provide the best care available in the most compassionate and efficient way possible. When children have kidney disease it is sometimes scary and stressful. We provide you and your child with prompt care and a consistent team of providers who know you, your child and their illness. We will spend whatever time necessary to help you understand their kidney problems and treat-

ment. Our highest priority is to provide care in a compassionate, personalized, family oriented way that is convenient for your child, family, and referring physicians with offices in Birmingham, Huntsville, and Montgomery. Dr. Benfield worked at UAB/Children’s Hospital for 20 years, eventually becoming the Director of Pediatric Nephrology. Under his direction the division developed programs in dialysis, transplantation, chronic kid-

ney disease and general nephrology that garnered national recognition being named as one of the top 25 programs in the country. In 2010 he opened Pediatric Nephrology of Alabama. He brought the same energy and pursuit of excellence to the private practice and has received national and local recognition being named to Best Doctors in America, Birmingham Best Doctors, Birmingham Super Doctors, and Parents’ Choice Award.

Dr. Stephanie Whitehead has been creating beautiful smiles for over 25 years. She is a mother of four, and knows how to meet the needs of her patients in a caring, and nurturing enviroment. At that time, she can check the growth and development of the teeth, and surrounding bone. Her

office is conveniently located in the heart of Hoover on Stadium Trace Parkway, near several schools and neighborhoods. Each patient’s care is carefully costumized to achieve a beautiful smile they can be proud of. She also offers a variety of payment options to accomodate anyone’s needs. Come smile with us! Meet Our Back Cover Sponsors APPLAUSE DANCEWEAR Applause Dancewear, a retail dancewear store has just celebrated its 36th year in business, located in the same place it opened in 1981, and still family owned and operated since the first day. They carry everything a dancer could possibly want for any kind of dancing. Applause also carries liturgical wear for church groups, amazing gymnastics leotards for every age, and batons, boots and rhinestones for dancelines and majorettes.

The store was originally opened by Buddy and Cindy Wade when Cindy was the choreographer of The Star Spangled Girls at Homewood High School. After managing the store while receiving her marketing degree at UAB, their daughter Katie set her sights on owning Applause and building the business. With her parents’ permission, Katie took over the store in 1992. She has continued to staff the store with dancers, knowing that

having employees who have practical application in the items they are selling and the experience to back the products will always make a customer more comfortable and secure when purchasing specialty items. She knows as a mom, how overwhelming it can be to purchase items for your children that you may not have had your own experience with. 1629 Oxmoor Road Homewood, AL 35209

The Trouble with Toys From early childhood, toys are a central fixture in most

kids’ lives. Playthings are the first thing children turn their

thoughts to upon waking, the items that demand their attention throughout the day, and often the objects of comfort that join them in bed as they fall asleep. But like any constant companion, toys can also have their moments when they become vexing. Toys get lost, sometimes they break, they collect underfoot (see: Lego TM) making us unhappy for a little while. The following titles touch on both the moments when toy frustration peaks as well as solutions that bring our beloved toys back into the fold.

Finding Monkey Moon

By Elizabeth Pulford, Illustrated by Kate Wilkinson (Candlewick) Michael’s bedtime is on approach but his constant companion Monkey Moon is missing. As he and his dad turn the house upside down searching, Michael’s worries for this lost friend begin to amplify. Father and son retrace their steps through a darkening park on their mission to find Monkey Moon. The park at night reveals new sights, but no sighting of Michael’s missing friend. When the discouraged pair turn toward home the last bit of light glints upon something hidden in the bushes, something that could be a sight for sore eyes. A testament to teamwork and tenacity when an important friend goes missing, Finding Monkey Moon is a hopeful and uplifting journey from lost to found.

Stuck

By Oliver Jeffers (Philomel / Penguin) Floyd’s simple plan to fly his kite barely gets off the ground when his kite gets stuck in a tree. Throwing his favorite shoe at the stranded kite doesn’t knock it down, but instead it gets stuck with the kite in the branches. His second favorite shoe soon joins the group aloft. Maddened with frustration, Floyd begins launching anything he can find up into the tree to get his kite unstuck. A ladder, a can of paint, a cat, the milkman, and an orangutan join an increasingly more ridiculous progression of things – all hurled into the tree to knock the previous (now stuck) items from the high branches. But when Floyd approaches the tree with one final thing – it may be just the ticket to getting his kite released. Readers will appreciate Jeffers’ sublimely absurd illustration of a boy’s escalating mission to retrieve his special kite. 20 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2017

Too Many Toys

By Heidi Deedman (Candlewick) Lulu was gifted with a very special toy when she was just a baby, her one-and-only teddy bear Jupiter, whom she loved very much. But as more birthdays and holidays arrived, so did more toys. By the time Lulu is five years old, toys are overflowing her shelves, crowding her at bath time and making it impossible to actually play with every one of them. After discarding several creative ideas, Lulu crafts a plan that will relocate her toys and give her more time with her one-and-only, Jupiter. One solution solves the problems of both a child with a surplus of toys and a host of children who may have a deficit of playthings. A delightful exploration of generosity from both ends, Too Many Toys highlights the importance of balance between too much and just enough.

How to Make Time for Family Dinner By Sarah Lyons

BENEFITS OF FAMILY DINNER Kids are more open to trying new foods, even veggies Portion control Opens communication Improved family dynamics

Families are faced with the challenge of balancing school and homework, careers, chores, errands and multiple extracurricular activities. The busier we become, the more difficult it becomes to make time for traditional family dinner. Many families fall into the habit of eating dinner on the go, leaving little time for the family to sit down together and catch up on each other’s day. As family dinner becomes less of a priority, families are missing out on the many benefits. Families who eat together enjoy quality time together, eat healthier meals overall, and even save a few dollars as compared to dining out. How do families make dinners a priority? Here are some tips. SET A TIME Review everyone’s scheduled activities and set a specific time for dinner each evening. Deanna King, mother of two, says “Family dinner time at the table is very important to me. I will communicate with my husband about what time he will be home to make sure dinner is ready for us to sit down together.” When everyone in the family understand that dinner 22 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2017

time together is a priority and the set time is communicated, it is easier for everyone to make sure that time is available for the family. WATCH THE SCHEDULE Be careful not to overschedule your children with activities in the afternoon and evening. Try not to schedule late afternoon meetings or activities during dinner. Family dinner, even if only a few times a week, is equally as important as sports and enrichment for kids. PLAN AHEAD AND SIMPLIFY MEALS Families are not only trying to work around busy schedules, but the simple question of what to serve at dinner can be a challenge. Keep dinners simple on busy weeknights so that family dinners can be a success. Follow a set meal plan and prep as much in advance as possible to make the evening run smoothly. Slow cooker meals or pre-made casseroles are a good solution. Keep in mind that meals do not have to be complicated. Serving something quick like cold sandwiches or leftovers still creates the opportunity for your family to sit down together and visit.

Saves money Kids are more likely to have higher self-esteem, lower risk of depression, and less likely to develop eating disorders (www.thefamilydinnerproject.org)

PUT DOWN THE PHONE Turn off digital distractions during dinner. Put down the smartphones and turn off the TV. Make the most of the time together, even if it is only for a few minutes a day. DO YOUR BEST Family dinner every night may not be realistic for all families. Start by incorporating one family dinner per week. Over time, increase the frequency to several times per week. Do your best to make family dinner a priority and you will see the lasting benefits for each family member over time. Sarah Lyons is a stay at home mom to six children.

Is Your Child Ready to Stay Home Alone? By Sarah Lyons

Giving kids the responsibility to stay home alone can be a positive and confidence building experience, a rite of passage. Every parent will reach the point where they are faced with the decision whether their child is ready to stay home alone. How do you know they are ready? Children must have the skills and maturity to handle being on their own safely. There is no magical age that determines a child is ready to be home alone but kids who are ready show the following signs: • Desires to stay home alone and is not fearful being alone in the home • Exhibits good decision making • Shows that he is aware of others and his surroundings • Proves herself to be responsible and trustworthy • Knows home address and phone number as well as how to get in touch with parents • Can make a snack for themselves • Knows how to use a phone, call a neighbor for help, and dial 911 • Follows simple rules and instructions • Knows basic first aid

Leaving kids home alone for the first time is a big step. Even if kids are not planning to babysit, consider enrolling them in a babysitting class because the skills taught there can be very useful for kids who are beginning to stay home alone. If you believe your child is ready, how can parents prepare them for success? Go over the rules. Are friends allowed to come over? Is the child allowed to leave the house? Are there cable channels the child is not permitted to watch? Go over these and any other family rules and make it clear that your child understands. Discuss possible situations. If someone comes to the door, what is the child to do? If the phone rings is the child to answer? How will they respond if someone asks to speak to the parent? “She is busy right now. Can I take a message?” is a good response. Kitchen safety. Make sure the child knows how to use kitchen appliances and tools and discuss what they are allowed to make in the kitchen. Only cold snacks? Can they use the microwave? Emergency preparedness. Does your child know what to do in case of smoke or a fire? What should he do if there are severe storms? Does she know basic first aid? Post emergency phone numbers and contact information so your child has it in case of an emergency. Discuss who to contact if parents are unreachable (a neighbor, family member or friend). Create a list of “Dos” and “Don’ts.” Don’t play with matches or lighters. Don’t let anyone in the house. Don’t leave the house, except an emergency situation. Do call and check in when you get home from school. Do work on homework and chores. Each family is different and will have their own list of what is expected. Role play. Act out different scenarios that may arise. Pretend that the child needs to reach you, what will they do? How would they call 911? What would they do in case of a fire? Pretend the phone rings, how will they answer? By walking through different situations kids will be better prepared if the unexpected happens. Start slow. Begin by leaving the child for a short 15-30 minutes at a time and slowly increase. Talk about any questions or problems that may have arose. Ask your child about their feelings when home alone. If the child is fearful, they may not be ready to be on their own. The Greatest Show on Earth

HITS THE ICE IN BIRMINGHAM By Carol Muse Evans

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s circus has been around for many years, but in 2017, it takes a big step – onto the ice. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey’s XTREME will come to Birmingham’s Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Jan. 19-22, 2017, in several performances, and the entire circus has been revamped around an ice and an intergalactic theme sure to amaze and entertain all ages. Gone are the elephants, but ice skaters will ramp up the excitement with more dynamic, unique talent, according to Johnathan Lee Iverson, the 18-year-veteran ringmaster of the show. “We’ve never used ice before, but we have some extraordinary skaters….and many of the regular staff have learned to skate,” Iverson says. “The ice is exciting, and has increased the pace of the show,” says Birmingham native and orchestra conductor Wages Argott, who has 40 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2017

been with the circus for 11 years. “It is a fascinating, huge new element and all acts are involved with the ice except for the very center ring, mostly for animal acts.” The Intergalactic Circus Odyssey takes patrons to fictitious planets in different parts of the galaxy when some of the circus acts have been abducted. Each planetary stop means adventure as the ringmaster goes to find the abducted acts, and we see each planet, the act, and so much more – on ice. The video screen and projection onto the ice is fantastic, Argott adds. “And this is our most successful theming of music for a show – it is big, cinematic and epic.” Back are the flying trapeze artists, the globe of steel, Clown Alley, and the greatest menagerie of lions, tigers, horses, mini donkeys, alpacas, goats and rescue dogs, Iverson adds. “We also have ice skaters from all over the world, Argott says. “With the combination of ice, the circus, and the music, this is the best line of entertainment value for a family,” he says. Visitors can see high-wire wizards, powerful strongmen, BMX trick riders, trampoline daredevils, inconceivable contortionists, a high-flying human cannonball, a bungee aerial skydiving display and an international assembly of more than 300 cast and crew for

2½ hours of thrilling entertainment. The circus animal walk the day before is gone, but there is an animal open house 90 minutes before each show, where visitors can learn about the care and training of the animals, talk with trainers and see some acrobats, Iverson adds. This usually takes place outside the arena, near the stables. Try on custom costumes, learn circus skills – like juggling – from the famous Ringling Bros. Clown Alley. Together with the show, your family receives more than three hours of

family fun with your ticket purchase. “The circus isn’t for everybody, but the circus welcomes everyone,” Iverson adds. Tickets start at $15 for the show, and all seats are reserved. Tickets are available at the BJCC box office and at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, visit www. Ringling.com. Carol Muse Evans is publisher and editor of Birmingham Parent.

Coloring With Your Child – Or Alone? THE POPULARITY OF ADULT COLORING BOOKS GROWS By Bethany Adams Hunley

Do you color with your child? Do you find you really enjoy it, beyond the fun of sharing the activity with your child? Have you colored alone? One of the top selling books on Amazon.com is Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Coloring Book. What makes this notable? Secret Garden is a coloring book for adults. Over the past three years, Johanna Basford, a Scottish artist and illustrator, has sold more than two million copies of her detailed black and white coloring books. The idea of adults coloring may sound strange, but psychological research backs up the appeal. According to Medical Daily, doctors and therapists cite lowered stress and greater concentration after patients participate in coloring sessions. Art therapy and coloring areas have been set up within libraries, as well as in some coffee houses. In fact, The Birmingham Public Library has hosted adult coloring workshops in the past. According to The New Yorker, adult coloring books have created a new industry category that is worth millions. “I think that coloring books are a good way for certain people to manage anxiety,” says Dr. Vivian Friedman Ph.D., a child and family psychologist at UAB, Department of Psychiatry. “It is calming and diverts upsetting thoughts” However, Friedman warns that people should not worry about the task of choosing colors and staying in the lines. The idea is to de-stress. Of course, there will always be a market for children’s coloring books. Coloring is a simple way for a child to explore their creativity and create their own works of art. According to Color Psychology, coloring promotes many positive

COLOR ME! traits in young children, such as improved focus and hand-toeye coordination, color awareness and recognition, and better handwriting skills. Allowing children to color is also believed to help children relax, focus, and express any pent-up emotions that they may be feeling. Many reputable sources, including CNN and Scholastic, praise coloring books and recommend encouraging your child to express themselves through art. “Coloring is a pre-writing skill that teaches eye-hand coordination,” Friedman adds. “Teachers have used coloring outlines in the lower elementary school grades for decades.” The Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Coloring Book, popular with adults, has several follow ups: Enchanted Forest, Lost Ocean, and Magical Jungle, which rival the success of the original. Many different styles and themes are now on the market depending on a person’s particular interests. There are coloring books tailored to everyone from animal lovers to zombie fans. And they make great holiday gifts. Adult coloring books are typically made of high quality paper and contain only front sides. The price point definitely reflects this as most adult coloring books cost between less than $10, to $15 and up. These books have so much detail and extraordinary design that a traditional box of crayons simply is not enough. Most avid fans use fine-point colored pencils or gel pens. The variation of colors and variety of effects provided by gel pens in particular make them ideal for elaborate projects. There are matte finishes, glitter, and neon to name a few, the idea being that no pictures need ever look the same. One of the biggest trends in gift giving is to gift an adult coloring book with a nice set of coloring pens or pencils. A gift idea that has been traditionally geared towards preschool and elementary students is now aimed towards nurses, accountants and many other professionals. College art classes have started using the idea of designing adult coloring books as heavy weighted graded assignments. The Secret Garden, Enchanted Forest and many other adult coloring books can be purchased everywhere from arts and crafts stores to high-end women’s boutiques. Be assured that women are not the only ones picking up colored pencils. There are many coloring books geared towards men’s interests as well. Everything from hunting and fishing to car and tractor coloring books can be found. It is quite fascinating that adults are still so charmed by one of the first activities we did as children. The ability to let go and zone out is rare in today’s multi-tasking focused world. The chance to turn off and just create for our own pleasure seems to have really hit a chord with stressed out Americans. When every news story that comes on causes tension and fear it is nice to know that adults have an activity that can easily carry them back to a time before mortgages and terrorism clouded their minds. Bethany Adams Hunley is a Birmingham based writer and mother.

Have a Happy Birthday (Without the Party): BUDGET-FRIENDLY BIRTHDAY IDEAS THAT MAKE YOUR CHILD FEEL SPECIAL By Sarah Lyons

The day your child was born is a day to celebrate and make them feel special. Birthday parties are fun, but they can be a lot of work and the costs can quickly add up. If you decide to skip the birthday party, it doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate big. Here are some ideas to make sure your child’s birthday is special. CREATE ANTICIPATION As the birthday approaches, build anticipation by talking about it and planning what the day will hold. You can create a special countdown by making a paper chain and tearing off one chain per day or even just counting down the number of days on a chalkboard in your home. Explain that although there will not be a big birthday party this year, there will still be a lot of fun things planned. MAKE THE CAKE A great way to save money on a birthday celebration is to make the cake yourself. Choose flavors and colors or themes your child loves and get siblings involved in the preparation. Kids typically don’t care about whether the cake is perfectly decorated, they are happy with a cake that is made just for them. BALLOON AVALANCHE When your child goes to sleep the night before their birthday, decorate the house with balloons or birthday decor. Try taping a disposable tablecloth to the outside of the door jamb and fill the space between with balloons. When your child opens the door, they 46 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2017

will be greeted with a balloon avalanche that is sure to put a big smile on their face. KIDS CHOICE When you are planning the day, consider your child’s favorites. Plan the day’s meals around your child’s favorite foods. Choose things that you typically do not serve to make the day more special. If you will go on an outing or if you will be dining out, let the child choose the location. DOCUMENT THE DAY Create a list of questions to ask your child on their birthday such as “Who is your best friend?” or list TV shows, songs, foods, etc. Record the answers in a safe place and repeat each year. It’s fun to look back and see how your child has changed and matured over the years. TELL THEIR STORY Kids love to hear stories about the day they were born, the cute things they did as a baby, or how you prepared for their arrival. Spend part of the day telling favorite stories about your child, they are sure to love it. HAVE OTHERS REACH OUT Ask friends and family to wish your child a happy birthday with calls, texts, messages, or cards. Consider talking to family members via Skype. This will help your child know that others are celebrating them even if you aren’t hosting a big birthday party this year.

MORE BIG WAYS TO CELEBRATE WITHOUT A PARTY Go to the movies Visit an amusement park Have dinner out at a favorite spot Go bowling Take a day trip to a neighboring town Attend a sporting event Be a tourist for the day in your hometown, visiting the zoo or other local attractions Let your child pick a place they would like to visit

As parents, we often feel like we have to spend a lot to make our child’s birthday special when this is truly not the case. With a little extra planning, your child’s day can be just as special as any expensive party. Sarah Lyons is a stay at home mom to six children. Some years her kids celebrate their birthday with a party, and other years they choose to celebrate in other ways.

Caring for the Caretaker:

HOW TO SUPPORT PARENTS OF SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN By Christa Melnyk Hines

When Tracy Glock’s 13-month-old daughter Kira was hospitalized with acute myeloid leukemia, she was touched by the outpouring of support she and her husband received. During those eight difficult months, the community rallied around the family. Friends and acquaintances babysat Kira in the hospital while her mom and dad worked, and many others helped by delivering meals and even mowing the family’s lawn. “Words cannot express the gratitude you feel when someone you barely know does so much for you,” Glock says, who was also pregnant at the time with Kira’s sister Allina. Although Kira, now seven, has recovered from the frightening ordeal, she still faces many daily challenges. As a child with Down syndrome and autism, learning and development takes longer and requires more patience compared to the typically developing child. Like many parents who have children with special needs, Glock says finding time for herself is difficult. While many of us know how to help a family in crisis, how do we support parents who often put their own needs last as they focus on the daily challenges of caring for special needs youngsters?

OFFER TO BABYSIT Finding trustworthy, alternate caretakers is a huge relief for parents who regularly juggle doctor’s appointments, school issues and therapy, not to mention jobs and other children. “Every special needs parent’s needs are different, but most just love a little rest,” Glock says. Because special needs children require more attention from their parents, healthcare providers and therapists, other youngsters in the family may feel slighted. “Children always struggle and this is the case whether they’re special needs or not,” says Nancy Masannat, mom to two children, including Emy, 16, and Kyle, 14, who is on the autism spectrum. “There’s going to be sibling jealousies.” When her children were younger, Masannat would often schedule her son’s appointments during times when her daughter was in preschool. “In my daughter’s mind, it wasn’t fair that someone was coming to the house and playing with her brother and not her.” Having access to a qualified babysitter you can trust with your special needs child can give you an opportunity to spend much-needed, one-on-one time with your other children too. LISTEN Ask your friend how she’s doing and then simply listen. Avoid offering platitudes or suggestions to help her fix problems. “We all just like to be heard. Everybody likes to vent,” Masannat says. “Just listen to what the issues are without judgment. That’s

48 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2017

a huge help for everybody, but primarily when you’re dealing with something that someone else might not understand.” Educate yourself. Get to know your friend’s child, including her disability, her personality quirks and her individual needs. And ask your friend about her specific parenting challenges. “It shows that you care and will help you provide more effective support,” says Heather Trammell, mom to two special needs children, including Beth, 14, who has Down syndrome and Marie, 11, who has high-functioning autism. Both girls also have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. SUGGEST RESOURCES Support groups help parents feel less alone and provide valuable resources for assistance in childcare, school issues and navigating healthcare. “The biggest thing for me was to know that I wasn’t in this by myself – that I wasn’t the only person who had a child who didn’t sleep well; that I wasn’t the only one with a child who was now three and not talking,” Masannat says. To find support groups in your area, consult with the therapists and teachers your child already works with, your library, your church and online. For example, www.autismspeaks.org, which includes resources for families or the National Down Syndrome Society, www. ndss.org. Also check out Facebook and MeetUp.com for local support groups.

OTHER IDEAS TO BRIGHTEN YOUR FRIEND’S DAY: ✱ Purchase a gift certificate for a massage or manicure ✱ If you plan to have the family over, ask your friend if you should be aware of any food sensitivities or specific ground rules to ensure a successful visit ✱ Offer to babysit and/or help with siblings ✱ Help with getting kids to practices ✱ Deliver a meal ✱ Mow their lawn ✱ Send a bouquet of cheerful flowers ✱ Arrange for a house cleaning crew ✱ Ask if you can pick up anything while running errands ✱ Mail an encouraging card
