The Benefits of Artistic Pursuits

THE ARTS IMPROVE CHILDREN’S SOCIAL SKILLS, EDUCATION, AND CREATIVITY By Alexandra Ditoro Growing up, dance was always part of my life. From ages 3 to 19, I was dancing. Dance gave me an outlet for my energy and emotions. It also taught me discipline, patience, and more things about myself than I could ever list. It led me to study dance in college and to pursue a professional career. All forms of art influence children and help shape them as they grow. As a dancer, journalist, and researcher, I recently reached out to professionals in education to gain more insight into how this artistic journey affects children as they develop. SOCIAL SKILLS One of the many benefits of being involved in the arts is improved social interactions. According to Francie Gardner, theatre teacher at Chelsea High School, students involving themselves in something like theatre provides a stronger sense of self. “Students…want to be themselves and discover who they are, but they don’t want to alienate themselves from their peer group,” she 12 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2018

says. “Finding a niche where they can safely express themselves is so important.” Participating in the arts allows children to develop a stronger sense of self and understanding of what they are capable of. “Students who participate in dance develop skills in multiple areas beyond physical domains,” says Amy Wilkinson, senior lecturer of dance at Loyola University Chicago. “Students develop self-knowledge, resilience, an incredible work ethic, a sense of community, and empathy among many other things. These attributes can be applied powerfully in all kinds of life situations outside the studio/stage.” Other important skills that can be developed by participation in the arts are public speaking and adjusting to being in front of an audience. During dance or musical performances, children often lose the fear of being in front of a group of people at an early age, which can make presenting to a conference room full of coworkers easier when they are adults. In theatre, strong public speaking skills are gained.

“Public speaking and personal communication skills are critical to the success of any individual in the workforce and arguably in life,” Gardner says. “Developing confidence in performance, clarity in speech, and improvisation skills are practical and can be fun. It helps them feel comfortable around others, and a lot of times with art, you have to work with other people.” EDUCATION Tami Moran, special education program specialist for Shelby County Schools, finds that art can also be used to teach. “Students use art to build fine motor skills, from starting with larger objects such as play dough and things they can manipulate and doing a lot of hand over hand activities to help guide and show them how to build and use those fine motor skills, up to physical therapy and adaptive PE,” she explains. “You can use art to teach and also to maintain a certain sensory because then you start thinking, ‘OK is my classroom too noisy, is

it too loud, is it too busy on the walls?’ We build in brain breaks, where it might be that you spin and do a dance on a brain break or that you listen to music or you sing a song.” The arts can carry students outside the studio or band room, and translate to the classroom. For example, Jon Bubbett, band director at Thompson High School, and 2015 Bandmaster of the Year from the Rho chapter of the Phi Beta Mu international bandmasters fraternity, finds that engaging in music can contribute to students’ success in the classroom. Music and other art programs can help improve learning skills and grades. “I like to tell parents who are concerned about their children’s grades that they need to get their kids in band to improve their grades,” Bubbett says. “Music programs have the highest number of students with the highest GPAs in the school. Who do you want your children to be around? I would want my child around others who have the highest GPAs and can still be involved in activities that are going to shape and mold their lives for years to come.” Bubbett sees music eventually leading students to and helping them succeed in a university setting. “It defines you. It has given many, many students the opportunity to go to college on scholarship or on partial scholarships. By the time students get to be seniors, they are pretty much set in terms of their high school career and ready to move on to college!” Students can receive scholarships because of their involvement in the arts but can also pursue a career in the art that they are interested in. Wilkinson describes college as a transition time, where students “really begin to hone their aesthetic as much as technique, and if they aren’t getting nourished by what they’ve been fed in the past, they have the freedom to make new choices.”

CREATIVITY & EXPRESSION The arts also serve as an outlet for self-expression. Bubbett recognizes this in his students. “It has opened their eyes to new ways of creativity and expression to themselves and to others,” he says. “It gives them a chance to be a part of something that is bigger than they are as individuals.” For example, in Bubbett’s classroom, songs may be assigned, but students can also choose and play music that speaks to them and reflects their feelings and emotions. Art is also, for the most part, a uniquely human trait. As Bubbett explains, “Art creates! Art gives us a way to express how we feel and to touch others in ways that can’t happen otherwise. It gives us a way of expressing our sense of being and our place in the world. Art needs no justification more than we exist….and so does art. It is who we are.” HOW TO INSPIRE YOUR CHILD Encouraging and inspiring children to experiment in the arts can begin as early as birth, even though they may not remember those first experiences. Making footprint pictures, listening to music, and watching dance or theatrical performances are all ways that infants and young children can participate in the arts. As they get older, they may gravitate toward one art type or another. Parents’

continued encouragement can help them adopt a life-long ability or hobby and develop social skills, further their education and stimulate creativity.

PB&J SANDWICHES: Small Kindnesses Matter By Stephanie Rodda Simple kindness is on the verge of becoming a lost art in our society and yet, there are still those who remind us what a big difference a small kindness can make. Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed by all that needs doing in the world and become paralyzed, doing nothing instead of doing what we can and making a real difference. When Charla Brown was first contacted about the need for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, she could hardly have imagined the long-lasting impact such a seemingly small kindness would have. The coach that year at Woodlawn High School recognized a need and that need was brought to Brown’s attention. She began to do what she could and what she could do was to see that 80 or more PB&J sandwiches were faithfully delivered to the athletes each day that sports practices were in session so they could participate without hunger pangs. 42 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2018

The coach that year at Woodlawn High School recognized a need and that need was brought to Brown’s attention. She began to do what she could and what she could do was to see that 80 or more PB&J sandwiches were faithfully delivered to the athletes each day that sports practices were in session so they could participate without hunger pangs. This outreach has now continued for more than five years and tens of thousands of sandwiches have been prepared and provided. But Brown is quick to point out that she could have never accomplished such a task on her own. As word spread over time, a wide variety of groups, families and individuals have participated. Girl Scout troops have volunteered. Small groups from Brown’s church, Church of the Highlands, as well as other

local congregations such as Trinity Methodist, have participated. And sometimes, individual families will join in and be a part of spreading the peanut butter onto a slice of bread and a little kindness into a heart. Woodlawn High School is the only city school in Birmingham without a sports field and they also do not have a booster club. Without a doubt, this leaves the student athletes at a disadvantage. and graduated from Woodlawn herself, and realizes that for many of these students, exceling at sports will encourage them to stay in school and possibly lead them to opportunities for higher education. Although sports practices at WHS are the primary focus of this community outreach, there are times when the WHS Band has received sandwiches and also, the student athletes at Hayes K-8 School. One thing is for sure, a small kindness can make a big difference and this is a good example of that. Brown recalls when one of the participating groups included inspirational quotes and scriptures with the sandwiches on small note papers. Many of the students taped them onto their gym lockers so they would continue to see them daily. It is moments like these that remind those who are involved, why they are involved. One of my favorite quotes by Mother Teresa, one of the greatest humanitarians of our time, is, “Do small things with great love.” She herself was small at under five feet tall and less than 100 pounds. But her impact was enormous. As I’m sure you have, so many times, I have seen the smallest of gestures make a real difference in the lives of people. Most of us have witnessed it and many of us have experienced it. During our years as foster parents, 44 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2018

we had the opportunity to witness the impact that kindness can have. Children who felt overlooked were convinced that they were finally noticed when their Santa list was noticed. That gift under the tree was worth far more than the money that was spent on it. I recently read about a group that passes out small white cards about the size of a business card. There are only two simple words printed in bold black ink upon the white card stock. YOU MATTER is all it says and yet it is having a big impact. The goal for the organization behind the cards is to pass out 1,000,000 cards in 2017. Why? Because the people these cards are given to are so touched by such a simple kindness, sometimes even to the point of tears. Whether it is a senior in a nursing home, a child in foster care, or a stranger in line behind you in the drive-thru, small kindnesses truly do matter. Sometimes we make mistakenly think that unless our contribution is large, it isn’t significant. It was Aesop who said, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” I believe that. It may not always be appreciated, but it is never wasted. Brenda Braxton, an RN who serves on the Mercy Ship as a medical missionary, shared two needs she was aware of with a group of friends. And now, dozens of the simplest pillowcase dresses are ready to accompany

her to serve as hospital gowns for the children being treated. Others handcrafted the small crocheted or knitted bears that each child receives once they are admitted. Alone, you or I could never meet the need, together, small kindnesses can meet a great need. All around the world other people are contributing the dressing gowns and cuddly bears. A child will be greatly comforted because of a small kindness. The holiday season is an ideal time to reach out to others with random acts of kindness. I recall one shopping day when all of my seven children were small. The store was crowded and maneuvering the buggies and my crew was quite a challenge. A young couple walked by and they held fragrant cups of coffee that I commented on. I just said, “That smells so good.” In the parking lot, they approached me as we were loading up and gave me a $5 gift card to a local coffee house. Their small kindness brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face. I enjoyed that treat as I drove home with a van full of children. ADOPTION: A Redemption Story “It’s a scary thing being pregnant, but nobody gets pregnant by mistake,” says Gina.* “God has a plan for every child. He knows every hair on their head. And so adoption came into it when I found out what a beautiful gift adoption is. It was a choice that was the most beautiful gift you could give anybody.” Gina is one of the many birth mothers who placed her child for adoption through Lifeline Children’s Services. Lifeline walks side by side with birth mothers as they make the decision on adoption and select the family they want for their baby. “It’s a huge privilege for us to walk alongside these mothers,” says Christy Harmon, Lifeline’s pregnancy counseling clinical coordinator. “It’s an emotional journey with many highs and many lows. It’s a huge privilege to watch the sacrifice these women make. I feel like I’m sitting in the front seat of a miracle every single day watching these women selflessly make a plan that’s beautiful for their child.” According to the National Council for Adoption’s most recent data, there were approximately 110,000 adoptions in the United States in 2014. In years past, most adoptions were done as closed adoptions, which meant there was no identifying information exchanged or communication between the birth parent and the adoptive parents before or after the adoption was finalized. Oftentimes, closed adoptions were the case because of the stigma surrounding adoption. “That shame surrounding adoption 46 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2018

grieves us because a birth mother gave the gift of their child,” Harmon says. “They should feel like a superhero, not shameful.” Slowly, over the past 10 years or so, that viewpoint has shifted. Today, more and more adoptions are actually open adoptions, and at Lifeline, almost every adoption facilitated today is an open adoption or a semi-open adoption. An open adoption means that there is correspondence exchanged between the birth mother and the adoptive parents through a mutually agreed upon plan. A semi-open adoption means that the agency facilitates the communication so, for example, the adoptive parents send the birth mother photos and letters through the agency and the birth mother will not know the adoptive parents last name or address. Both open and semi-open adoptions oftentimes include visits between the adoptive parents and child and the birth mother. “More and more people have started to see the benefit of open adoptions to all parties in the adoption triad, which is the child, the adoptive parents, and the birth parent,” says Christie Mac Segars, Lifeline’s vice president of domestic services. “The birth mother can be affirmed in the decision she made after seeing that her child is growing up in a stable family. The child can feel that he or she wasn’t abandoned and that being placed for adoption was a loving plan by their birth mother. And for the adoptive parents, they are able to better understand their child by knowing the birth mother.”

By Paige Townley With most open adoptions, Lifeline recommends birth mothers and adoptive parents to start out with a semi-open adoption, mainly to allow both time to adjust. “The birth mother needs some space and time to heal,” Harmon explains. “Everyone needs time to adjust when an adoption takes place. We don’t want it to be too much all at once for anyone involved. Starting off as a semi-open adoption helps build trust in the relationship on both sides, and that typically leads to more openness in most cases.” Oftentimes, building the relationship slowly between the birth mother and the adoptive parents can lead to a very close, open relationship. That is the case for Mark and Shannon,* who turned to Lifeline in 2014 hoping to adopt after struggling with infertility issues. Mark and Shannon’s contact with their child’s birth mother started early on – they were even able to go to an ultrasound appointment with her – and the relationship quickly grew. “The nature of our relationship changed over time,” Shannon says. “Initially, we exchanged emails back and forth, then those changed to phone conversations. Now, we see each other in person, and texting is much more fluid. For example, when our daughter first started walking, my first thought other than telling my husband is that I wanted to call her birth mom to share.” Sometimes, however, a closer relationship can actually reveal the need for less communication between the two parties. “We have one birth mother who actually goes and visits the

redemption.” — Christy Harmon

adoptive parents and the child once a month or so, even going on family vacations with them sometimes,” Harmon says. “But then sometimes with a very open relationship the birth mother can actually see that she needs to pull back and have less communication and more boundaries because it’s too painful. It is definitely different case by case, so that’s why we recommend starting off with minimal communication and try to let it grow organically.” That growth in openness and communication can typically happen organically when everyone involved stays focused on the child’s best interests, Harmon adds. “That’s what everyone is really working toward,” she says. “That’s why the birth mother made the adoption plan, because she loves the child dearly and wants a stable family for the child. And that’s why the adoptive parents are adopting, because they want to be able to care for and provide a stable home for the child. So when both parties are looking at the child’s best interest, it’s easy to come to an agreement. And while the child needs to know their adoptive parents as mom and dad, it’s good for them to know their birth parents and to have that connection. That’s a huge piece of their identity.” The child understanding that he or she was adopted also allows the child to see adoption as a positive factor. “There are a lot of children that didn’t find out they were adopted until they were older, and that’s hard news to find out that the parents who raised you aren’t your biological parents,” Harmon says. “When adoption is celebrated as part of the child’s story from the time they were born, they can see adoption as a place of joy and celebration.” Harmon understands the significance and need for openness than perhaps most others. She was adopted as a newborn, and her parents celebrated it with her from the start. “I’m so thankful my parents are incredible people and never wanted to keep the adoption a secret from me,” she says. “They always called me their darling adopted child. They were intentional in telling me how thankful they were that my birth parents chose them.” While Harmon’s adoption was originally closed, her parents understood the benefit to finding her birth mother, which they eventually did. Today, she has a positive relationship with both her birth parents. “When I think of adoption, I think of the word ‘redemption,’” Harmon says. “For the family struggling with infertility, for the birth mom who feels alone and is scared, and for the child – it’s a redemption story for them all. How to Find Your Homeschool Tribe By Kerrie McLoughlin

WANTED: Group of local or online home-

schoolers to form a tribe where we all feel relaxed and comfortable. Must just naturally hit it off, and if our kids get along, that’s even better. Must share ideas, field trips, encouragement, tears, laughs, rides, curriculum, coffee, playdates and frustrations. Future possibilities include starting a small learning co-op, holiday parties, book clubs for different ages, sports and more. Sound too good to be true? It can be your awesome reality! If you are new to homeschooling and haven’t yet found your tribe, taking the leap could lead you (and your kids!) to Homeschool Zen. Everybody talks about homeschool socialization for your kids, but what about for you? And why can’t you have both at the same time? Homeschooling mom Angie Pemberton says, “My tribe is our little group with all kids about the same age. I think it gets a little harder to homeschool as kids get older and they start 48 | birminghamparent | THE GUIDE 2018

feeling like they are missing out on some of the school stuff. This group helps us get the good stuff without the drama. We have our own little summer co-op and field trip group and love the support we get from each other.” So where can you find – or how can you start – your own homeschooling tribe? Lots of places!

Online

To me, this is the easiest way to find and maintain your tribe. Start with Yahoo Groups, Meetup and Facebook. If you Google “homeschool groups [your city]” you will also find some great options. You can start your own group online, as well, if you aren’t finding what you want or if you just want to do your own thing. Invite tribe potentials and then they can invite friends they like. Your group might be full of homeschoolers from all over the country (or world!) or maybe you connect with a handful with whom you can meet locally.

Locally: Join an existing group

Of course, it’s a great help to find a local tribe as well. Most states have a list of homeschool groups, so check that out. Start with some large support group meetings to see if it’s a good fit for both you and your children. You may find you gel with a few moms, and you can then branch off into your own weekly meetup and bring others in as you make connections. Also, during school hours go to places where homeschoolers hang out – libraries, parks, indoor play areas, zoos, children’s museums, indoor trampoline parks. Some libraries have homeschooler lunch bunch, and you can also Google for local coops and classes. Maybe you meet someone at the library who you think would fit into your group very well, and you invite him or her to your next park date or book club meetup. Unless you are a total social butterfly, heading into a group of homeschooling

parents might seem a little scary. Take a deep breath and do it anyway – it’s for you and for your kids, after all, and you deserve to find that special supportive set of people.

Locally: Start your own group

Host a book club, art show, nature hike or field trip and invite a bunch of different people you’ve collected from using the methods above. People will start showing up and you’ll get to know them. Some will never come, some will come religiously, but soon enough you’ll start to figure out who your tribe is. My experience has always been that the kids will follow your lead and, if you get a large enough group going, they will find at least one person they also connect with. Don’t forget you can have more than one tribe! I put together a great tribe of hippie-ish unschooling friends (moms and dads) that met at a coffeehouse/gym combo for a long time, but then I also found a fantastic group of structured homeschooling women when my family started at a co-op. You can, conversely, have one tribe that’s entirely online and one that only meets for field trips! The sky’s the limit where your tribes are concerned! What about disagreements and problems? It’s true that there are going to be

disagreements in any group. Sometimes you just need a break after a sticky situation with another mom or between the kids; sometimes there needs to be a full-on break-up with the entire group. Sometimes you just change and maybe outgrow the tribe and slowly and politely make your exit with no hard feelings. People in your tribe will move away, stop homeschooling altogether, have drama over things non-homeschool related and more. Your tribe will grow, shrink and change. Be open to the tribe concept and I promise it will enrich the homeschooling experience for both you and your kids! Keep an open mind and collect your wonderful homeschool

friends wherever you can find them. Then nurture those relationships, because you’re going to need the support on your homeschooling journey!
