Line Gad Christiansen
is a PhD Fellow at Design for Play, Design school Kolding (Denmark). With a background as an (playful) interaction designer and her work with children and young people both with and without special prerequisites, her focus is now play and learning, and how to understand and evoke playful behaviour for young people through design, and the possible benefits hereof.
Play has for some decades and in many circles been shelved as outside of learning spheres and only meant for children until a certain age. What can be observed now is a revival of the phenomenal characteristics and potentials found in strong play experiences across life-long learning target groups and applied situations as well as broadly in the product, service and experience industry. The effect play can have on participants and surroundings can be extremely effective. This book provides operational design guidelines on how to find strong balances in the making of specific playbased designs as well as how to involve users and stakeholders in the process of play design making. Furthermore, it provides frameworks and theories at a more operational level, that can guide those interested in designing for particular play experiences at a hands-on level.
Framing Play Design
Mathias Poulsen is the founder of the international play festival CounterPlay and co-founder of the national Danish Play think tank. These initiatives have inspired him to do proper research, leading him to a position as research assistant at Design for play, Design School Kolding (Denmark), where he aims to pursue a PhD study. His primary research interest is situated in the intersection between play, design and democracy, as he studies how designing for play might cultivate a new kind of playful citizenship.

Tilde Bekker
Ben Schouten
graduated from the Rietveld Art Academy in 1983 and worked as a professional artist for 20 years. In 2001 he received his PhD on content based image retrieval and interfaces that allow browsing & searching for images in an intuitive way, according to human perception. Currently, Ben Schouten is Full Professor Playful Interactions in Smart Environments at Eindhoven University of Technology. His group focuses on play and design for social innovations, citizen empowerment and culture.
Linda de Valk
studied Industrial Design at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), The Netherlands. In 2008 she graduated with a project called ‘Loneliness in the care home’, which was nominated for the thesis award ‘Innovations in Health Care 2009’. During her PhD at TU/e, in 2012, she won a Best Paper award for one of her scientific publications. She finished her PhD work on ‘Designing for open-ended play’ in 2015. Linda currently works as Senior Usability Engineer at Philips Healthcare.

A hands-on Guide for Designers, Learners & Innovators
is a Professor of Digital Technologies for Playfulness and Motivation (Systemic Change group) at the department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology. Since December 2017, she is an Honorary Professor at Design School Kolding (Denmark). She leads and participates in design research projects on designing for playful interactions and playful learning. Her main research interests are designing for playful interactions between multiple people and multiple objects or systems, design for persuasion and designing products for children and older adults.

Hanne Hede Jørgensen. Associate Professor in Pedagogy at VIA University College since 2007 and PhD fellow, Design for Play, at Design School Kolding since 2019. She has for many years been occupied with child culture, narratives and language both as a teacher and a researcher. Her main research areas today are Design for Play in Pedagogical and Educational Settings e.g. Schools, ECEC’s, Leisure Time Clubs.
Kolding (Denmark). He is lead of several research projects investigating how play and game based design methods can be used to support innovation activities and organizational development. His research interest is in play and game based design methods that supports reframing and imagination of better design, innovation and learning processes in the industry.
Helle Marie Skovbjerg is a Professor in Design for Play at Design School Kolding (Denmark). Helle Marie leads and participate in research projects about designing for play in domains like schools, education and health. Her main research contribution is the development of the mood perspective on play, aiming at creating a language of play, and then development of strategies of how to design for and with moods of play.
Framing Play Design
Jesper Falck Legaard is Assistant Professor at Design for Play, Design School Kolding (Denmark). He is research lead of projects investigating how different forms of play activities can be supported through particular design attributes. His research interest is mainly rooted in industrial design, focusing on designing products for play- and/or playful experiences. His research spans between toys, tools and corporate culture, not only focusing on products for play, but also on how aesthetic design principles can elicit playfulness through non-play objects and environments. Karen Feder is an Assistant Professor in child-centred design for play at Design for Play, Design School Kolding (Denmark). She is the head of the MA programme in Design for Play that educates play designers as international ambassadors for play. Her research interest is how the designer can experience the perspective of children when designing for play to the benefit of more relevant play experiences.
Antonia C. Södergren holds a Master of Arts in Design Management

and is currently employed as Ph.D. student at Design for Play, Design School Kolding (Denmark). Since she is experienced as consultant, teacher and project manager, she is right now occupied with research that playfully bridges design processes to and with pre-schoolers aged 3-6, so that they, rather than adults, become protagonists.
Jess Uhre Rahbek is a trained play designer and a PhD Fellow at Design for Play, Design School Kolding (Denmark). Since 2010, he has worked in the field of play and games both as a professional practitioner and as a researcher. His main research interest is in play design theory and how to translate theory into design tools and methods that can elevate the practice of play design.
